Shenaz Restaurant - Curry sauce

I really love The Shenaz and thankfully one of my friends loves the place as much as I do. The pre…read moretheatre menu has a great selection of starters, mains and tea/coffee/ice cream for £13.50 and is available 4pm until 6:30pm every day apart from Saturday. It's great value for money. The staff are always friendly and very attentive, no matter how busy the place is. I had vegetable pakora to start which was crispy and very tasty. Oh, and their spiced onions are the best I have ever tasted! My main of Chicken Tikki Chasni was delicious and so creamy. But the real star of the show was the Peshwari Naan which was easily the best I have ever tasted: so sweet and coconutty (that's now a word!). Overall, the meal was just jam packed with delciious-ness! We both ordered vanilla ice cream and how on earth the waiter managed to memorise all the different sauce toppings is beyond me - THERE ARE SO MANY TO CHOOSE FROM! Seriously, I was impressed with the selection, even though I opted for raspberry. We were tempted to order MORE ice cream to try different sauce toppings but I'm pretty sure ordering two desserts each is well...not the done thing, haha! I highly recommend a visit to The Shenaz if you've not yet been!

Came back again last night and all I could remember that it was behind the Mitchell library. Great food...good service and spotlessly clean. I had meat samosas, fish karahi and garlic naan. Everything was fresh and tasty and spicy. If I'm back up in Glasgow again I would be happy to go back.

Well it got to dinner time and curry seemed like a good idea so off we set. There is a wide selection on the menu but I really fancied paneer so that was an obvious starter choice. Then I opted for the chicken jaipuiri with a nan. Oh and a mint lassi which was delicious! Quick service and by the end we were stuffed. Only slight gripe was the difficulty we had in getting the bill at the end but other than that everything was tasty and enjoyable. It was busy when we were in but the food was quick to the table. Just as well as I was starving! I'll add this to the list of good curry venues in Glasgow, and I'll definitely have to get off the bus again to come back!

They do a number of speciality dishes but I opted for the chicken tikka hallumi, very nice and reasonably priced, the good thing is they also have a desk for takeaway food if your just looking to get a carry out. A note though is that they don't serve alcohol in here so don't do what I did and go expecting to have a pint with your dinner - this is the only reason I'll give it 4 stars as it won't cater to everyone, but in terms of the food I can't fault it.

Secondly, it is extremely overstaffed. Whilst we ate there was a host, 3-4 wait staff knocking about and someone else who brought the food to your table. This did become a bit odd. There were too many staff on so they congregated around the bar, which was next to where we were eating, and as there were so few customers you started to feel a bit conspicuous. The staff were insanely efficient, as they had so little to do! However aside from there being more staff than customers at times Ashoka is exactly how you expect. Great food with polite and efficient service. Would I walk to this one over Ashton Lane? If they have another deal on you bet your Pakora I would!

I was quite enthusiastic about trying this restaurant, as I've heard many a remark complimenting the fantastic food and superb service. The deal entitled us to a Chef's Platter to start, a main each with rice and naan bread to share - there were options to upgrade to the Tandoori Platter, or upgrade the rice and naan for extra pennies, but that really wasn't necessary. There was a lot of food! When we turned up for our reservation, we were kindly shown to our seats quickly and our drinks orders were taken. While we waited for the food, we were given a wee taster of something made of potato I think, which was really nice. I just wish I could remember what it was called! The Chef's Platter contained, among other things, chicken chaat, chicken pakora, veg pakora, mushroom pakora, onion bhaji, and the most enormous samosa you've ever seen! Our mains hadn't come out yet and already we were filling up! Tasty, tasty! For our mains, we'd both chosen the chicken bhuna (instead of being clever and choosing two different dishes and sharing - hindsight is 20:20), which was super duper tasty! There was plenty of rice and a large, lovely, warm, buttery naan to go with it, so I dread to think what state of stuffed we'd have been in had we upgraded. It was all very yum. Worth every penny. Drop on by, oh spice-loving lovelies.

We ate from the a la carte menu but what we wanted the server kept on recommending something else and we all ended up with food that we did not even want plus three cans of cider. We had poppadom's with spiced onions. the poppadom's had an after taste as if they where made some time ago and the spiced onions had a texture as if they where part boiled & very soft, when onions taste like this you know they are on the turn and they where. We all had the chefs platter that consisted of all things deep fried the only thing missing was the mars bar, several of the items where questionable and had a unhealthy glow that was not natural, overall the contents of the platter was tasteless and bland, would have actually rather had the deep fried mars bar. The mains where ok, nothing to get excited about but the nan bread had an unhealthy glow to it as if it had been painted with a neon emulsion spray paint, and l sadly forgot my sunglasses. When you are dining with guests, the last thing you want is a server hovering over your table talking from start to finish telling you about all their problems. Meal for three people was a hefty £70

But for me, it just wasn't an experience that brought the rating above 'A-OK'. I mean, there are some pretty cool wee features. Like a flipping fountain in the middle of the dining area. A bloody big one too, must have cost a bomb at Dobbies! In addition, the decor is cool if a little dated, however if I'm being honest, it detracts not one bit from the experience. Food wise, the grub was good, if not 'waaaaahaaaayyyy'! Price wise, it was a tad on the steep side, coming in at just over 50 notes for three folks. Maybe it's just me, but that seemed a tad on the high side. Overall, it's a three, but a solid three none the less. Will I be back? Not sure really. I liked it, but as I said, it neither stood out food wise, or made me feel like i got what i paid for. Sorry folks.

It's clear that the focus of the restaurant is that it should still be a fun pub atmosphere that just happens to serve Indian food. So, looking in from the outside, you wouldn't know that it was an Indian restaurant. But when you walk in and smell it, you'll know. Portions were a little small so expect that you'd need to get a few things to get a full meal out of it. But they are appropriately priced for the portion size. They serve food here tapas-style and I believe you are still meant to share them so the idea is that you get a lot of dishes and eat as you drink copious amounts of beer. The one thing that made this place stand out was their service. It was amazing! During my meal, their card machines broke down and, as a result, I didn't have a way to pay for my food. The manager then comes up to me and says, "It's our fault. Don't worry about it." To be clear, this is only something I'd see in small-town America but never in a major city. So I was surprised that in Scotland's largest city, they were so trusting. (Really earning their reputation as the friendliest city in the UK). I was so touched that I promised I'd return to pay for my meal. I even kept my receipt so they'd know what to charge me. I came back the next morning, paid my bill, and, even though it's not required at all in the UK, I left a big tip as a thank you for trusting me and being so accommodating. When I come back to Glasgow, I will definitely come back.
