Fire Island LightHouse

If you haven't been to Fire Island's landmark lighthouse, have you REALLY been to Long Island??…read more Well, I grew up on LI and truthfully never made it over here til I started having out of town visitors. Lately though, as a semi-landlocked refugee from Ohioooooooooo, I make it a point (ha!) to get over (and up!) here every chance I get!! The beach is beautiful, (any/every season) the boardwalk hike (from Parking Lot 5) is VERY easy and scenic (look for deer!!) and the view from the top of this historic lighthouse is priceless!! There's a lighthouse museum next door to the lighthouse itself, which is worth a visit (very friendly/informative info/volunteers) but if you're in a rush (esp. toward the end of the day/sunset) head right over the lighthouse itself and get tickets for that climb/money shot!! If I'm able to do the climb with only minimal huffing and puffing (!!) you should be able to as well, and the AMAZING 365 degree view you'll find will be more than worth the "struggle!!" DO IT, L.I.!!!

There are no cars on the island, taking the ferry is a great way to visit. If you want a quiet, relaxed visit definitely visit during the off season, which is before Memorial Day weekend. The actual lighthouse was closed for my visit but there was ship wreckage on display. In addition to skull of baby whale that washed ashore. The current Fire Island Lighthouse was completed in 1858, with a state-of-the-art revolving first order Fresnel lens produced in France by the Henry-Lepaute company. It was equipped with a first order hydraulic lamp, with 5 concentric wicks, and used Colza oil or whale oil. The 16-foot-tall, beehive-shaped glass and brass apparatus was rotated by means of a clockwork mechanism with flying pendulum. It emitted a 5-second flash once every minute. With a focal plane of 166 feet above sea level, this light could be seen from ships at least 21-23 nautical miles at sea. This original first order Fresnel lens served as a beacon to mariners from the top of the Fire Island Lighthouse from 1858 through 1932. In 1933, it was taken out of service and displayed at the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia until 2000. For history buff's I am providing information on the Savannah ship wreckage below: The sea brings us many gifts. One that recently arrived at Fire Island Lighthouse is a 13' x 13' piece of wreckage, possibly a remnant of the last voyage of the ship Savannah. This was no ordinary ship that came to grief on our shores. The Savannah was the first steam-powered ship to cross the Atlantic Ocean. On May 22, 1819, she left Savannah Harbor and sailed across the Atlantic Twenty-nine days later she arrived at Liverpool to the cheers of thousands who came to see the smoke and sparks bursting from her single stack. Under steam for about 80 hoursof her voyage, her notoriety caused quite a sensation in Europe, where she visited many ports, including Stockholm, St. Petersburg, and Copenhagen.Returning to Savannah in November 1819, she failed to attract passengers and cargo because steam technology was still considered dangerous and unreliable. She was sold and converted to full sail, then carrying cargo between Savannah and New York.On November 5, 1821, during a terrible storm, she missed New York Harbor and wrecked off the shore of Fire Island where she remained buried for more than 200 years.Tropical Storm Ian uncovered the piece of her wreckage that began its journey westward with the tides, where it was pulled from the beach east of Robert Moses Field 5.On November 17th, 2022, National Park Service staff delivered the wreckage to the Lighthouse. Currently, N. P. S. staff is conducting research to positively identify the wreckage, including evident construction particulars and other anecdotal evidence of size, circumstance, and location of the wreck. The historic impact of the transatlantic voyage of Savannah will never be overlooked. Memorialized by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1933, he designated the day that the Savannah began its historic transatlantic voyage, May 22nd, as National Maritime Day.The sea has presented us with an extraordinary gift, delivered right to our doorstep: a remarkable piece of Maritime Heritage, now on view at the Fire Island Lighthouse for all visitors to appreciate.Angela ReichAuthorShipwreck of Hopes

I used Morgan shipping last month to ship my personal items from my second apartment in Oxford, UK…read moreto my New York apartment. I called for an estimate and spoke with Jerry who was very helpful in explaining to me all the different options available and pricing for each of them. The price was reasonable, and this was a company paid move, so I opted to go with the full service package, which includes the packing, loading, shipping door-to-door, paperwork at customs, and delivery to my apartment in the city. I have to say that this was all relatively new to me, but it worked really well. MORGAN SHIPPING did a good job, and I am grateful. They gave me a lot of helpful information on how to pack some of my personal items and the crew arrived early and started packing my TV and big items. Then the big truck with the container arrived on my street in Oxford. We had to block the street to be able to get it as close as we did, so we left one guy to watch the traffic. The landlord was not happy with the big truck blocking the street, but these guys were mindful of not scuffing the walls while moving the big stuff, so he was happy with that. Mike, the head crew was the best. He was very patient with me and very efficient with the guys. They worked the entire time without taking a break. My friend was there to help. She enjoyed watching these guys packing so organized. Jerry from the office was checking to make sure everything was fine and that I was up-to-date with the required documentation for exports, etc. After they left, Jerry sent me an email with the arrival of approximately 30 days. When the container arrived in the US, Surina from the customs office was very nice and helpful in explaining the taxes and everything. She got the container delivered the following day with no problems. I have so much stuff that it did not fit into my small New York apartment so I asked them to store a few items for me. In the end, the overall shipping processes door-to-door was about 27 days. I was a little nervous with the process and the move. Moving companies do not carry a good reputation in general and there seems to always be negative experiences no matter whom you speak with. This, I can honestly say, is not one of those instances. I go back and forth between Oxford and New York work constantly for work, and I'll continue to use Morgan Shipping when I need to move my belongings.

You are going to be SO happy you chose this company. This afternoon I was dismayed when my old sofa couldn't fit on the elevator of my 8th floor building. Luckily I called Robert and within an hour he had booked two guys to come by later in the evening. From chatting with him to texting photos to working with his team, everything was professional and respectful. The guys even stayed to help assemble my new sofa! Not a single scratch on the walls - they carried the sofa as if it were a feather. I am so relieved to have this all taken care of. Thank you Robert and Top Hat Movers! Highly recommend! A++++++++

With a 4-5 man crew, I was amazed at how fast and efficiently they were able to work. After an almost 2-hour move out (stairs and a stoop) they moved my stuff into my new apartment in 1 hour! Working with Robert always includes personal attention to your concerns, needs and special items. And he's always thorough with close attention to detail. And the crew is friendly and just cool to work with. He also has bins available to rent and always has additional supplies, boxes, tape, bubble wrap etc. I would hire Top Hat every time honestly, and it's a great feeling to support a local Brooklyn business that's been around for three decades.

Moreover, my bed frame is a 17th century antique and difficult to assemble and dissemble. So when they left the first time, l discovered my headboard was loose, which surprised me as there was no such issue in my previous residence. So l informed Allen and within a week the fellows returned to Bloomfield, New Jersey all the way from Brooklyn and attempted to tighten the headboard with unfortunately less than great success, despite much effort. It didn't occur to me until they'd left that the rails must have been reversed so yet again the gentleman returned and spent at least 45 minutes to reverse the rails with much better results. Therefore, on a scale of 1-10, a la Spinal Tap, l rate them an 11 and will not only never use another company but will sing their praises until the day l die!

However, the service and experience provided was the total opposite. It was unacceptable and negligent. The movers carelessly handled our belongings. From the moment they stepped in the door, one of the movers made a snide remark. We always expect courteous and respectful conduct. And that was not the case. They broke the blinds, damaged/chipped the wood on our furniture, lost our sofa pillows, they stuffed our belongings carelessly in a bag, our clothes were on the floor and they did not care to pick them up until I brought it to their attention. They discarded the tape rolls around the apartment as if it was a waste disposal basket. They put our sofas back as a toddler would put a toy back together. And honestly a toddler would had done a better job. The movers were negligent and extremely unprofessional. They took cigarette breaks lengthening the moving process and transferring the smell inside the space and around our belongings. One of the crew members was extremely rude and arrogant. He took our tree and banged it against the door when moving it out. Slammed the roll of black bags on the floor. He could have care less for the job he was performing. Because we paid for professional, white-glove service, we expect items to be handled with extreme care. The carelessness of the staff has resulted in leaving us with a very sour experience and it was totally the opposite of what was denoted to us in our initial conversation and in the reviews. I will never recommend their services to anyone, not even to my worse enemy. To anyone thinking of hiring this company do not go by the reviews as we did. Do your research! Be warned!
