This is the WORST post office. I don't know how they manage to keep it open and any of their "retail" staff employed. It's beyond rude, it's incompetent. This review is for my PHONE CALL to this branch office to check the status of a registered, insured package they were supposedly holding. My advice -- call early!! Don't wait until late in the day. If you do, you'll likely encounter a phone that just rings ad infinitum, (no voicemail roll over) making you wonder if the number is correct. I spoke with a very helpful woman who took my information and called me back within 5 minutes to confirm that yes, the package was there waiting for me. She also offered to connect me to the supervisor of the postal carrier who neglected to attempt to deliver my package -- he/she simply stuck the pickup notice in my box. Frustrating. Anyway, 5 stars for strong customer service -- not something I usually associate with the post office. :) read more

I really love the post office in Oakland. I especially love the clerk named Robin. I have been lucky enough to have him help me every time I have been there. He is very patient and has a good sense of humor. He has also helped me with good mailing advice. I am happy this will be my main branch. read more

Yes, I would describe the staff as a little aggressive or borderline gruff. However, I called about a concern with my temporary mail forwarding and am quite satisfied with the experience. The women that helped me contacted the carrier on my route and then called me back in 10 minutes. She said the carrier was only seeing a few letters a week, she also informed me that the USPS now sends forwarded mail to Sacramento before sending it to the new address which can add a couple days to standard delivery time. That sucks, but at least they took the mystery out of it all and did so very quickly. read more

Looking for parking around the facility can get tough. But once you get inside, the postal employees are friendly, professional, and efficient. The line can get very long at times. I went there one day and it happens that the service area was closed but one of the employee came out and got my mail and helped me with stamps. had to deal w/ this post office when a USPS packages showed up as "delivered" online, but never arrived at my apartment. in summary: 0 stars for convenience. 5 stars for the helpful guy that i finally got a hold of. first - if you are following up on a lost package "investigation", the correct number to call is 510-622-7406. you will find this out after multiple iterations of calling the USPS 800 number and yelling "customer service" into the phone (or you can trust me). civic center PO called me at 11 AM to follow up on my lost package claim. i called back a few minutes later and the phone just rang...and rang...and rang. eventually left a voicemail that was never returned. i called again the next day. this time they told me to call anytime before 9 AM (when the postmaster goes out on their route). makes sense. i called again, the following day, at 7:30 am...and they told me to call back at 8:15. finally got a hold of a gentleman who was able to find my package and re-deliver to my address. however, the reason given for it getting lost was that i had filed a "change of address" (which i did not). they actually asked me "are you sure you haven't moved?". yes, i am pretty damn sure i have not moved to a new house. "well, are you sure you didn't fill out paperwork to move?". really?? 0 stars for you, USPS. the man who eventually solved the case of the missing package was helpful, patient, and very responsive. so basically - call them between 8:15 - 9:00 am, and hope you get him on the line! read more

I agree with John H. I have gone to this postal location on many occasions. I used to live just a block or so away on Jackson in fact. The lines are usually not as long here as at other post offices so this is my preferred in-person location when I have to do some postal business for work. Parking is usually not a challenge either although you do need to bring change for the meters. read more

I'm not sure why this post office has such low reviews. The people who work here have always been really nice and patient, and flexible when I've come in to pick up packages without a packing slip. It's also a very beautiful building. read more

I do have to compliment the nice people in Consumer Affairs and the Postmaster's Office for really trying and lighting a fire under their asses, and they are not happy about the circumstances surrounding the non-delivered and MIA packages. The first time I went there to ship a package, one of the worker was friendly and told me what to do and how to do it and then the other two, after I went back in the line, they were complete b****!! This place takes forever 20 to 30 min to back up a package!!!!!! There's one guy who's working here and he does and amazing job he's always so nice no matter how rude and loud people are to him. Package was out for deliver since 9:05 am January 5. I got home from work around 6 pm waited outside with a friend for a hour or two. I sing the body electric! I'm with you folks! Beautiful, stately government building.. Lovely marble and fixtures.. But most of the time, when I send a package through this place.. MY PACKAGE NEVER GETS TO WHERE ITS SUPPOSED TO GO!! To say the customer service is horrible, is pretty much telling the truth.. Its not an understatement, nor is it an overstatement.. Its spot on! There is this one older Asian man who works there, and he must think he earned himself a doctorate in postal distribution services, because he looks at everyone like they're beneath him and as if he's bothered by the customers who he's supposed to be serving with a warm smile and casual "how do you do". The one aspect that stops this Post Office from being efficient is it's lack of community. Everyone comes to work in their individual silos but feel free about stopping business for any conversation, about Starbucks or pay raises or whatever. Then respond like you shouldn't have attitude for making sure you adhere to their hours but they could care less about the time they waste. read more

Monday morning: drove around black twice to secure a spot. Inside there's a line of about 10 people; one cashier only!! No medium sized priority flat rate boxes on the floor. I stand in line for over 15 minutes and ask for the box I need when I get to the counter. Idiot cashier tells me to look on the floor as if I didn't already. He says there might not be anymore and looks around the back and says there are no more of the boxes that I need. The worst customer service experience. I managed a service company and I will never hire this creature in a million year. On Thursday, Feb 15th, I went to inquire my package in Window 12 area. Whoever is the creature who was working between 11am - 12pm needs to get back to training or get fired. First of, this creature, a female if you can call it that, was very rude and very condescending. She doesn't seem to comprehend proper customer etiquette and how to find solution to a problem. Instead, after inputting the tracking number twice, she blamed me for not providing the correct USPS tracking number even though it was the correct tracking number. She deflected her bad attitude and started pointing out that I was arguing with her when I was merely trying to understand the situation on my lost package. She then cut off our conversation and tries to help another customer in line. Is this the kind of service USPS provide for their customers? It's pretty pathetic and very poor standard to have this creature as an employee. She's disgustingly rude, uneducated, and have no clue on how to provide standard customer support. Her pathetic negative attitude reflected the kind of company USPS provides to its customers. She needs to be taught some proper lessons. But then again, she probably came from a poor background with no high standard growing up. read more

This is usually my go- to post office because it's so close to where I live and it's also open on Saturdays however yesterday I was very disappointed with the service. This particular window clerk seemed new and had no idea what she was doing. I used my bank card to purchase two money orders, like I do every month but for some reason she said that it declined. She didn't seem to know how to work the credit card machine properly and seemed to have some type of issue with every customer that came to her window. read more

UPDATE: 12/23/2011- Civic Center Oakland PO... STILL has NOT found my package...Called number recommended below. Most everyone has been nice-ONCE someone can answer the phone. I am being told " it is being worked on". A Priority Mail package with Delivery Confirmation arrived on sent from NYC on December 5 arrived on December 8 at this facility and the recipient has received nothing- not a notice or anything. I understand everyone is busy and especially the USPS (what is left of it) but this is a mystery.I sent this package long before the Xmas rush and am STILL having all these problems . And it does not make it better that I am not alone. Apparently, despite many nice people working here and a beautiful facility, the problems at CCO are seemingly many and consistent. Besides the review stated on this site, I have spoken to people in Oakland and heard their experience's as well. It is sad to see a government agency like USPS move forward with closings due to changing times and fiscal problems. Working people losing their jobs is a tragedy. While I will stay hopeful that my package will be found and sent to the recipient, I will use FEDEX if I mail anything to Oakland via the Civic Civil Center Post Office. Stay tuned.. This is the second time in two weeks where tracking says a package was "delivered" to me when it actually wasn't. I called the first time and the post office said that they mark packages "delivered" just for convenience' sake and that they get delivered later. The first package did get delivered later but it is almost 6pm and nothing has been delivered, even now, although the carriers have obviously told the post office they delivered the package. I am tired of this behavior. I want my package delivered at least on the same day that the carriers say it was delivered. What is the deal? Why lie and create false records of delivery when packages haven't been delivered? What do I have to do? read more

I sell books on Ebay and I ship Media Mail. The packages I send are sitting for 10 days and counting. No scan and no delivery.

This review is based on a disturbing experience that I had with a package carrier based from this postal location. I like to add that this one-star rating is not due to any business interactions within this location. On March 19th, 2018 an African American, female postal worker knocked on my door (later you will learn my reason for racial identification in this review). She told me that she had a big package and paused as if she were waiting for verification from me. I responed "Yes, I am expecting a big package today." This postal carrier proceeds to tell me that the package was quite heavy and then asked me to come out with her to help carry this package to my doorstep. I told her that due to my back injury I will not be able to do such a thing. She then quips about how I should knock on one of my neighbors doors and get them to help her. At this point, I can't believe what is transpiring before me but I continued to remain calm and polite (although I felt like I had just opened my door to the twilight zone). My response to her rudely remarked request was the question of whether she had a hand trolley in her truck? Simple question with resolve, I thought--but, boy was I wrong (if this postal worker was to be the judge)! She tells me that she was just filling in for another worker and that it was not her job to be lifting packages. In attempt to work with her, I tell her that if she could use the trolley to get my package to the bottom of my 3 steps, I would handle the rest. She then tells me that she "didn't feel like going through the truck to look for the trolley." At this point I simply had to ask "Is it your job to deliver packages? And to use a trolley when necessary?" To my disbelief, all of sudden this woman flies off the handle by hurling words of insult and threats my way! She tells me 'the problem with black folks like me is their attitude... that I was just another disrespectful black person...' She then proceeds to tell me that she 'will just have to drag my package up the driveway...' When I asked her not to do that because I didn't want her to damage my headboard, she threatened to take off without delivering my package at all! I began to notice that this woman was out of my reach in regards to reasoning with. However, I remained calm and polite, even while she continued with her accusations about my "being difficult" due to me being black--mind you that this postal worker is an African American woman herself. So, I had asked for her name twice. Her name begins with an "E" and ends with an "e". Then I asked if she could call her supervisor so I could speak with them. She calls a supervisor and gives a loud performance on the curb in front of my building. She is shouting all kinds of lies about my conduct over the phone to her supervisor. Her display was bringing on an audience of my neighbors and it was quite embarrassing. So, I calmly asked if she could place her supervisor on speaker phone so I can speak with them. All I was able to say was it I wasn't creating an issue, I just wanted my package--she snatches the phone away from face, interrupting me, so she could yell some more into her phone. Fortunately, her supervisor instructed her to deliver my package. The postal worker finally rolls my 37 pound package to my steps without struggle, but all the while yelling about my 'being a disrespectful black person that refused to help another black person out... And how in all her 19 years of working for the post office, it was always black customers who gave her hard times.' At this point, I had enough of her display and I kept my final words to her brief: I told her that I will definitely be in contact with her supervisor because her behavior was unacceptable and not necessary. I'd filed a written complaint with that post office and was able speak with someone in the Post Master's office as well. The Post Master (office) was provided with a copy of my written complaint. The USPS needs to be aware about how this particular employee behavior could become a financial liability to their business. Someone threatens to drag or violently handle merchandise should not be trusted to deliver packages. Also, a person who irrationally insults people based on race, should not have a job in which they are in contact with the public. The way she continued to insult me, it was as if she had had a hard day and she wanted to use me, a stranger, as a punching bag--never mind that I had paid for USPS services. Also, never mind the fact that USPS employed her to deliver packages to customers doorsteps and that USPS doesn't pay customers to labor their own packages out of USPS vehicles. I guess I should also ignore the strong probability that this postal worker job requires her to be able to lift a certain amount of weight and not act as if 37 pounds is an 800 pound piano. read more

Our mail delivery is absolutely HORRIBLE! If we're lucky, we get our mail delivered maybe once a week. Amazon packages sent via USPS are often delayed or delivered to the wrong address. The regular carrier Derrick (truck 31) is scared of dogs (all of which are secured) and refuses to deliver our mail, so he makes his supervisor (or other carriers) deliver mail after they're done their routes. Derrick is often seen at the top of our hill sleeping in his truck. Several of our neighbors have had problems with him for years. When asked about the shoddy delivery service, he claims that there's a high turnover because new hires are too lazy to work. We have complained to customer service and the district office, and nothing ever gets resolved. Once, a mail carrier even dumped the entire block's mail on our front porch! Some of our mail is time-sensitive and we don't get it until weeks or months later. We've tried contacting Teresa at the local post office and she is never available (either in person or by phone). We are on the verge of petitioning to demand that Derrick be fired or reassigned to another route. Please give us a mail carrier who can do the job! read more

Dogs NOT ALLOWED here now. Ugh. Walked my dog, we walked in to the post office, am told he's not allowed in. Now I can't buy any postage. I do not ever like to leave my dog unattended and not visible, tied up outside. It's just not responsible. I will only ever do this to run in to a food place to pick up something to go really quick (like literally 2 minutes) since dogs aren't allowed inside places where they serve food generally, and even then I am constantly looking at him out the window. My dog never does anything, just stands or sits next to me and waits, wags his tail and smiles when he knows people are smiling at him, and that's it. He does not bark. He has three legs. He lets toddlers pull his ears and tail. And the stupid parking outside the post office costs too much considering how damn long it always takes to wait in line here, that's why I park farther away and walk over! God what a pain, stupid post office. Why won't you just let pick up my packages at the 7th street one instead? They are faster and they have easy free parking! read more

I shipped three Xbox 360's to Florida. when asked if I wanted ins. or delivery, I said no to ins. because they were broke xbox's but yes to delivery confirmation. what happened? well they took the package and my money but the package never moved after the counter. thats right, it didnt get processed or shipped. since I didnt have insurance I am screwed. I guess not paying for ins. is their free pass to steal it.
