This review is specifically about the pickup window. Other people who say the building is charming, even magnificent, are correct. Knowing that the pickup window experience is always stupidly time-consuming -- I got there a few minutes before 8:00 on a Saturday morning. Three other people had already done the same thing, so I was fourth in line. The pickup window opened fairly punctually at 8am. After 20 minutes or so, one person had been served successfully and the second was still waiting for his package to be found, and I was starting to feel screwed. About then, the 3rd person in line gave up, so I became next. Keep in mind I am here for a perfectly ordinary package pickup -- a DVD sent express mail from Canada that wouldn't fit in my mailbox. The second person walks away empty-handed and now I am at the window. My pickup slip is taken. The search for my package begins. After five or 10 minutes, a second employee is brought in to assist. At 8:30, I am asked to stand away from the window. The second employee keeps searching, bless her heart, while the first employee helps the next person in line. There are now about 10 people behind me. At 8:38, my DVD is found, I sign for it, and walk away, resolved to write a 1-star review. What's the problem?!? This nonsense happens to virtually every pickup customer, every time. Apparently they have an utterly broken package filing system, and every person that arrives with a slip means a new search through the hundreds or thousands of packages waiting to be picked up. This post office could hardly be doing a better job of putting USPS out of business as a package delivery service. I dread the place, and I go out of my way to have my packages delivered by any other carrier. I hope this review somehow contributes to some constructive action. After a similarly bad previous visit, I already gave feedback through the USPS customer service system. Obviously it had no effect. I guess I should be happy they don't lose the packages, although come to think of it, I am expecting one other that I should have gotten a slip for by now.... read more

So, I wrote that last review while I was actually in the hellish line to pick up a package. When I got to the front of the line they said that they couldn't find my package and that they probably just didn't have it. But then a few days later they called me to say that they found it and that I should come in again. I came in the next time I was able to make it before 5pm the following week and when I got to the front of the line that time they told me that they'd returned my package to the sender. read more

One is often compelled to write a review of a post office as a result of receiving bad service, which is most likely why this USPO is underrated. The service rendered depends on who is behind the glass. In my case, I was lucky to get one of the good ones. They even have free tape, whereas most post offices make you buy it for $3. Stamps and supplies were well-stocked. The building is beautiful, and the long corridor has that echo chamber quality that makes you want to whistle and tap dance. After all, finally getting that package or letter sent off is cause for merriment. There is something ceremonious about this place. Every time I order a package I specifically ask for them to ship no signature required and to write on the package if not home please leave on the front porch! However every time I come home there is a notice in my box that says delivery confirmation even though that is not so! So then I have to take time off work because they are only open during the hours I work. So then I spend 15 minutes looking for parking and then on average an hour waiting for my package. Honestly for the hour of work taking off, it would have been more cost effective just to pay ups or fedex for next day delivery. I just don't get their logic, why would pay for delivery just to turn around and go pick up my packages? I really did want to support my local post office, but they refuse to honor my wishes and I just can't afford to do business with them anymore. read more

Once I showed up w a shot glass I wanted to send and the lady rummaged around in the back to grab a bunch of tape and packaging for me like newspaper and bags all for free instead of making me pay for that bubble wrap. Don't let the grand size of this governmental building fool you. I went here on a Saturday 3 weeks before Christmas and only 3 windows were open. I just needed stamps so I wandered the vast halls looking for stamp machine rather than waiting in the long lines. No stamp machine. Continuing to wander the vast halls looking to ask any postal worker for advice about getting stamps, I entered an office. The lights were off and there was no sign of a human. I entered the neighboring office. No lights no humans. Continuing to the last office and beginning to feel I shouldn't be there, I found the exit. As I opened the door leading back out in to the main hallway, I saw a green light begin to flash above the doorway and the sound of an alarm began to sound. Despite setting off the alarm, STILL, no humans. I think this facility exists for mail processing and post office boxes rather than providing direct service to the public. Don't waste your time in this vast empty museum. Go to a REAL post office. read more

This is the worst post office I have ever had to deal with. Over the last two years, they have lost four of my packages with no apology or explanation. Most recently, they claimed that a package of mine was delivered on a Tuesday at 3:24pm, though it was not received (I have my packages delivered to my work address, so there most definitely would have been someone there to receive it at 3:24pm). They said there was nothing they could do. If the carrier said she delivered it, then they would go by what she said. Then mysteriously, a week and a half later, the package was delivered. Seriously shady. Unfortunately, this is the local post office for both my home and work address, so I am stuck dealing with them. Grrrrr.... One good thing? The building is beautiful. I'm pretty sure a weekend in hell would be more enjoyable than this awful, awful place. The line for pickups LITERALLY will take you an hour. I doesn't matter what time you go either because someone else in the area will more than likely have the same idea. They recently lost a package of mine and the entire process was probably worse than extracting half of my teeth without being medicated. I don't get how something was unable to fit in my mailbox, and then miraculously 5 minutes later it's marked as delivered...but not really there. I wish I could give it a zero. I returned an Amazon textbook rental on Dec 19, 2013 with a post mark stamp. Today's January 12th, 2014 and Amazon DID NOT RECEIVE IT. I used the tracking number from the shipping label to check it's location, however it says that the tracking number DOES NOT EXIST. So I assumed the lady didn't care to scan or post mark it for me at all. Are you serious?? You can't simply scan the package before you put it under the table? I'm still frustrated because I paid $32 for a rental book, and now i have to pay for a full retail price ($96) to avoid overpaying with the extension fee ($15 for 2 extra weeks). I visit this post office at least 4 days per week as I have rented a box here for the last 5 years. First off, the building is beautiful. It is filled with marble and amazing art deco accents throughout. The place should be made available for private events where they could in-turn use the extra funds to hire an additional service rep to occupy available checkout stands. The guy at the package pickup window #12 is the nicest guy on this planet! The guy who handles the box payments is very kind as well. I have become familiar with most staff members and find that if you are polite to them, they will be overly polite to you. Con 1 - The lines are unacceptable at certain times and its unfair that they do not have additional staff to help paying customers as there are plenty of counter space. Con 2 - Management must do something about the "regulars" who stand at both entryways smoking, spitting, swearing, fighting, and begging for money. When will one of them take out their aggression on a customer or someone simply walking on the sidewalk before someone at the Post Office takes action? read more

This is also about a phone call. Like someone else said, call early! I tried calling a few times and ~4 pm and just got a ringing phone. I didn't have any luck wit the phone number listed on yelp, but I did with the number listed on the USPS site: (510) 251-3373. I called the post office with little hope of getting any help: I was supposed to have 2 packages redelivered, but only one showed up. I thought someone had stolen the second package, but I wanted to check with the post office just in case. I spoke with a really helpful person, David, who said he would go look for the package and call me back. About 30 minutes later, he called back to say he had found my package and that I could come pick it up. I was so happy! In short, my mail carrier evidently sucks, but the people at the post office seem to be helpful. read more

this place is so BEYOND horrible it's actually unbelievable. after my friend tried to reschedule delivery a bunch of times for her package, they just held it here. she had to go 7 hours away for college and ended up not being able to get it in time, so she asked me to. when i went to pick it up, the lady told me that i needed a video of my friend holding her ID saying my name and that she wants me to pick up her package. she seemed nice so we did exactly that. i come back with the video, along with tons of photos of my friend holding her ID to a different woman who tells me that she can't accept that, despite it being a super clear video of my friend SAYING SHE WANTS ME TO PICK IT UP and that's literally what the other lady told me to do. however she said she'll look around for the package. she located it but told me she can't give it to me because i don't have a note. already frustrated, i go home, look at the usps website for directions of alternate pick up, and it says that this would be valid, "on plain paper (simply a note on paper saying that "a name" has permission to pick up mail for "my name", and then it needs to be signed) from the addressee." so, we make this note, get a picture of my friends ID on this note, and i come back. same lady that told me the video wasn't valid was there and told me the package wasn't here anymore. read more

I made an online reservation for passport service. They were super friendly and very efficient! They even offer a passport photo service, which helped me avoid the several back and forth trips to Walgreens that I made last time I was applying for kids passports. This place gets 2 stars because it's in a cool building and parking isn't so much a nightmare if you come at the right time. Unfortunately I won't be back...I reserved a PO Box online through USPS's website. Then came TWICE to this location to show my ID and get my box number. Both times their "system" was down. I left pretty uneasy about their capabilities and found it better for me to spend the extra money at a place like Postal Plus in Glenview for a mailbox. You also get way more personable service at a place like that. I thought I'd save a little money by getting the PO Box but was met with nothing but dumb stares and was told "come back in 5 mins to see if it works" two days in a row...No wonder USPS is going down the tank! I went in to collect a package, they had lost it. They said they'd contact the carrier and call me back, but never did. I went in again, they didn't know what I was talking about, still couldn't find the package. Told me to come in another time and ask for the carrier or a manager myself, who are only available in the mornings. Since I have to work in the mornings, I asked if there was a phone number I could call. I was given two, they both just ring a while and then fail. The building itself is really big.. The post office part isn't that big, but usually it doesn't take too long when you're in line. The postal workers behind the counter have always been super friendly at this location. Picking up your packages here usually doesn't take a long time either. It's off from the regular postal services so it's nice that there's a designated person in the window who only handles package pick-ups. The long hallway inside the building is really nice and open. One time a humming bird was trapped inside and was frantically flying around trying to get back out... poor thing... read more

This review is for the passport application process. Amazingly fast! I had to submit two applications for my toddler (2yrs old) and my newborn. I was in and out in just less than 20 minutes! I even had their photos taken there! The gentleman who took the photos was extremely nice and did an excellent job (we are talking about taking photos for a restless toddler and a newborn who still needs neck support)! Now I did have morning appointments (9:15 and 9:30) but I think the most important thing is to have all your required documents ready to go. Also make sure you bring your checkbook! They only accept personal check or money order for the passport application. You can pay their processing fees and photo service with debit/credit card. I was there this morning and saw the homeless guy that is always sitting on the stairs. He is always talking to himself. Some lady to the window and started yelling at the people working there to call security because he was harassing her. The lady who served me at the window was not so friendly. The worst experience ever. The mailmen do not even bother ringing the door bel, they just automatically leave a "we missed you notice". I request TWICE for a re-delivery and they completely ignore and never come again. I call usps 800 number and they told me I can have an authorized person pick these up. So I have my roommate go to the post office to do so, and they tell her no!!! And now going to try and re-deliver again. So now more time wasted. I opened up 3 complaint cases, got a generic apology response from the supervisor (Tammy Wareand) basically told me to pick up the packages and didn't address any of my complaints. Came in to send legal documents (trying to serve someone is small claims court), sent it priority and certified and they lost it!!! Still standing at the window in the post office (40 minutes waiting for their supervisor) spent an hour here on Saturday. Still no answers! This is ridiculous for a government office. The location Yelp has for this joint is incorrect. It's on 13th between Jackson and Alice. It pains me to give 1 star to the USPS. Especially because the building is absolutely gorgeous. I'm a huge architecture guy, and I really love frequenting structures as classic as this Post Office. That being said, this place SUCKS. I've used post offices in NYC, NJ, Philly, DC, Boston, SF. The people that work here typify the stereotype of know nothing, do nothing post office workers. A package that was sent to me was lost at this location. The guy at the front desk was courteous but had no idea what happened to the package and told me I would have to talk to his supervisor. It was about 3:30pm and the supervisor had already left for the day, so I wasn't able to speak to her. I did get her phone number, and so I call and left her a voicemail the next day...and the day after that...and the day after that. I never received any sort of response, nothing...nada. So I had to wait in line with about 20 people ahead of me and only 2 windows were opened which is ridiculous. This is the post office not the DMV. This is one of the nicest post offices in all of Oakland, it is very well constructed, and very clean inside and out, but does have some issues in the areas of customer service and productivity. More often than not, there is a line out the door of customers waiting for service; even after the business has been open for more than 30 minutes. I understand that they may get busy during peak hours, but opening is the one time where workers should be ready to work, not ready to stand around and B.S. about last night's Game of Thrones episode while sipping coffee. If management would step in and light a fire under the employees' A****, this place could be worth 5 stars, until then; they will be so-so. read more

This review is for my PHONE CALL to this branch office to check the status of a registered, insured package they were supposedly holding. My advice -- call early!! Don't wait until late in the day. If you do, you'll likely encounter a phone that just rings ad infinitum, (no voicemail roll over) making you wonder if the number is correct. I spoke with a very helpful woman who took my information and called me back within 5 minutes to confirm that yes, the package was there waiting for me. She also offered to connect me to the supervisor of the postal carrier who neglected to attempt to deliver my package -- he/she simply stuck the pickup notice in my box. Frustrating. Anyway, 5 stars for strong customer service -- not something I usually associate with the post office. :) read more

He is very patient and has a good sense of humor. He has also helped me with good mailing advice. I am happy this will be my main branch. read more
