You'll wait on a long line, while the guy three people ahead of you engages the teller in a lengthy transaction for some reason you really can't fathom. I mean really, here's my package (ahem), take it, send it, how much? That's really all that needs to be done. But I digress, this place has some low reviews, but it's really no different from any other post office. The tellers operate behind a bullet-proof glass wall. They aren't super speedy, but they are responsive and know what they're doing. So really, chill out. It's the nature of the business. If I could give 0 stars I would. I walked in with a package that already had postage, but I was shipping priority mail and wanted to get a tracking number. I have come to this location before and had no problem doing the same thing, however the woman behind the counter told me I could not ship out my package and refused to give me a tracking number. I refused to leave the counter since I waited already for over 40 minutes, when one of her coworkers in the next window said I could ship my package with the postage already on it, and gave her a tracking sticker. With a roll of her eyes, a flip of her braids, she slammed the sticker onto my package and it got mailed out. Geez. Talk about horrible customer service... WORST customer service ever. The attendants are rude, don't even make eye contact with you to acknowledge you, they'll make you wait even longer in line as they finish their side conversations. Great customer service is about going above and beyond for your customers and they haven't had a lesson in that. There is one gentleman here who is polite and works efficiently. Came early trying to mail out important documents, no one was in line. This lady at the reception has her hand on her chin not wanting to help. And I finally got her attention, she was giving spotty info as to my options to mail out my documents in voice I can't hear through the thick plastic pane. I asked her to please repeat again and she started yelling and screaming like as if I'm inconveniencing her to do her job and help the customer. I end up going into this post office all the time to pick up packages, and I now budget an extra 20 minutes for the line. It seems to be a bit of a senior citizen crowd dominating the line, so I often have to let someone go ahead of me, and more often than not, I regret it. It cannot take 25 minutes to pick out a stamp, can it? BUT, there is one small ray of hope in this location, despite the shortage of staff and lengthy waits. There is a lovely lady who goes through the line, one person at a time, and checks what each person is doing to see if she can help expedite the process. She is polite and helpful. THANK YOU! For what it's worth, this is a good post office. I've run into some issues with missing mail, priority mail shipments that went missing, and delivery problems, and the Gilbert has always either called me, or addressed the problem with me in person when I showed up. A few weeks ago the APC machine started swallowing stamps that people purchased, but a friendly employee helped me find mine after they closed at 5PM. However, nothing is perfect. There are some "problem employees" who have no idea what they're doing and don't care. Sure, sometimes there's a 40 minute wait with a line out the door (see photos) just to get to the counter and parking isn't easy. This tends to happen around the Christmas holiday. However, I frequently patronize this post office because it's close to me, and more often than not, someone who is capable steps in to assist. Look, if you don't like how things are going with the USPS, complain to your congressperson. That's your duty as a citizen. Some thugs in Washington are hell bent on privatizing the Postal Service and making a quick buck at the same time. Now a line develops (there was only one other person before). I continue to stand there and wait like a dummy thinking these ppl are going to help me. Another clerk comes in and asks to take who's next. I go and explain I need my to turn in my passport app. This new rude girl refuses, says "it's a staffing issue" and then YELLS AT ME. Full on yelling. Like I had to repeatedly say "stop yelling at me." Because I calmly and politely am asking to turn in my passport application? I paid $208 total to have my passport expedited for my trip to Paris in 2 weeks, after waiting in line for 45 minutes, while some woman occasionally poked her head out of a small opening window in the top of a door as if the man behind the curtain in the wizard of oz to stare at all of us in line, then shut it, offering no help. After making an appointment, and waiting in line for 30 minutes, the woman behind the counter told me I could not be helped because I did not have an appointment. She left the customers she was helping to check if I did have an appointment and finding I did, she refused to help the very people she was in the middle of assisting since they maybe didn't have an appointment. I just wanted to send a certified letter. The teller quickly told me my envelope was too small and that I needed to fill out something. I responded telling her it's never been a problem before there. She quickly responded with even more tude saying the other tellers did it wrong and tried sending me to the back of the long line. An african american lady named Cheryl made this visit a total nightmare. This gentleman was next in line, he had several packages and was writing something in his personal planner. Before he could step up to her window Cheryl yelled "I'll have the next person who is NOT writing!" he went to the second window instead, which had a very nice lady. Cheryl also yelled at a customer to turn his phone off. He was getting text messages and had a small ping noise. It wasn't disruptive or loud, it was repetitive, but that was extremely rude and unprofessional of her to yell like that. Then she loudly pronounce "Ooh six o'clock is too far away. I am tired if this joint!" When it was my turn I put my AT&T U-verse receiver, remote, and modem in the turning thing, U-Verse pays for the USPS to box and ship these items. I have done it before! She gave me a look like 'what do you think you are doing' and asks "do you have a question" I told her no, that I was sending these back. When I tried to show her the paperwork she said "No it has to be in a box. I ain't never seen it look like that. you have to buy a box and pack it. They told you the wrong thing. I can't take that." Sorry lady you are totally wrong. AT&T pays USPS to do this service. Giving this PO one star is even generous enough. Waiting 15 minutes for them to open this morning, and as far as I'm concerned, they probably still have not opened while I am typing this. Granted, there are workers (clerks managing the customer service windows) who do a good job, even for some who actually open early every once in a while. But the workers who cannot open after repeated attempts of bettering the door to get someone's attention to ***ing open the goddamned place is futile. They can be highly irresponsible, inconsiderate and just all out sucky. It's a catch 22 to have them close: We need this post office as it's useful and conveniently located and all, yet with their crappy service to customers (let alone giving people wrong times who need passports and having them wait even longer) is probably idea that this place should close. This review is regarding passport applications at this location: First, I checked the website from the US Dept of State, the usps website, AND I called this post office before coming in to file a passport application for my baby (which incidentally requires two parents and the baby to attend in person). All three sources indicated that this location accepted applications 10am to 3pm. We arrived at 2:25 pm. The lady at the passport counter tried to claim that they were only open until 2pm, but "since you have your baby here I'll process it for you." I informed her of my diligent attempt to determine the opening hours, and she denied that anyone on the phone would say they were open until 3pm. She said the website says 2pm (it does not). Then she told me that "I'm supposed to be out of here at 3pm, and it's so much work to file the applications, as we have to mail them out." Um, excuse me, but isn't that your job, since you work at the POST OFFICE!?!?!?! I literally had steam coming out of my ears. It took her about 5 minutes to fill in the 6 lines of the form that were here responsibility, staple the pages together, etc. Then she informed me that my photograph would be rejected as the background color was wrong. I asked if we could take a photo there as the website said they have photos on site. Wrong! Apparently their camera is broken. All in all it was a terrible experience. After the forms were processed, I asked for the phone number, and it matched the number I had called earlier in the day. She still denied that anyone there would say that passport service ran until 3pm. I suggested that she tell her boss, or bring it up in a team meeting. Ugh. Incompetence. read more

Without a doubt, this is the worst run government office I have ever been in. The USPS is always complaining that they don't have enough money... well one suggestion would be to fire everyone working at this branch and hire friendly people so that customers may actually want to pay for its services. There is one woman who works here who is an absolute bitch (pretty sure it's the woman that was commented on in other reviews) and the rest are a mixture of rude and incompetent. There is a senior center a couple blocks away and I constantly see the employees harassing the elderly customers here for completely unnecessary reasons. If you want to be belittled, spoken to like a criminal, have to bring all your packing supplies including pens (yes, they won't lend you pens), waste an hour of your day, and not have any confidence that your package will actually arrive at it's destination then you should definitely employ the services of this post office branch. read more

I have been traveling a lot lately and have scheduled Mail Holds with pick-ups at the post office. Except for one time, this office has delivered my mail to my mailbox every single time, regardless. One time, I came home to find my mailbox overflowing with mail. I went to the post office anyway just in case there was more mail for me, since I had requested a pick-up. The postal rep said there was nothing waiting for me. Then - I rec'd a notice that there was mail waiting for me for pick-up! I went back and, lo and behold, there was more mail for me at the post office. This office can't properly execute a mail hold and has difficulty locating held mail. So far, to the best of my knowledge, they have not lost anything, but every time I go out of town and place a mail hold, I worry about my delivery every time. The passport hour is noon to 2pm as of Sep 2, 2014. Payment has to be by debit card (extra $1.25 for money order fee), money order or personal check. Make a copy of your ID at home otherwise they will charge you .50. Also there is $25 processing fee on top of the passport fee listed on US passport & intl travel website. If you are using DS3053, information on your ID should be filled at notary. I highly recommend to go to the recreational sport center at UC Berkeley instead. They are open from 9am to 7pm on weekdays, 10am to 3pm on Saturday, very fast and there's no rude staff like at the post office. Hope this will help and you don't have to make 4 trips like I did. read more

The folks working here are friendly, the woman helping me (Margaret I believe) gave me good advice about the cheapest options, and she's working incredibly quickly to type in all 45 of the addresses I'm mailing to (I didn't realize she would have to do this and I feel terrible.) This post office is a torture chamber by design. The neighborhood includes wealthy Piedmont and the staff goes out of their way to be slow, inefficient and rather unfriendly. The fact that most appear to be Chinese with communist attitude of " I'm an important government employee and your are entirely at my mercy" just reminds you how insignificant you are to those ladies. I only go when I get registered mail, sometimes there's no way to get help, maybe it's because the particular employee is on a mandatory federal break. The counter is ALWAYS understaffed on Saturdays, always. I also tried to get a passport renewal taken care of here, and although the website says you can walk in, the nasties will tell you that you must have an appointment. My advice is to avoid this office if you can. Waiting in line for a precious Saturday hour feels like a day, especially after that cake gets sprinkled with a federal employee attitude to top it all off. This post office is great! They have a self-service machine where you can mail packages and buy stamps without standing in line, they have a parking lot, and I find the people very helpful. They're also the only office in town that answers their phone. I called to get a passport appointment, and not only did she make one, she suggested other locations with walk-in hours and even called one of them for me to confirm the information! The mis-management of this station is inexcusable, and has often been a wretched patron experience for the past 25 years I've used it. Tuesday, 1/7/20 : no mail at P. O. box outlet 4192 Piedmont Ave -- the whole day - I checked 3x. I was waiting for a legal mailing: the box was empty all day. Next day, today, Wed 1/8/20: staff confirmed: no mail was brought over the previous day at all. She was sorting 2 days' worth of mail this morning, telling me to come back in about an hour. No apologies. No concept that patrons may not work around the corner, and coming back in an hour is not possible. Missing my expected legal mailing (b/c it didn't turn up Monday, so Tues was the last day) caused me a critical delay in a legal matter. PLUS: Customers stopping at the P. O. Box outlet at 4192 Piedmont Ave on Saturday mornings, long after the posted opening time, frequently find it locked up. Whoever is in charge of opening it up Sat mornings is totally unreliable. There've been complaints for years: no change. PLUS: I frequently miss expected mail, which turns up with postmarks 3 weeks earlier: probably put in the wrong box originally. Seems like reading numbers would be a required skill set for sorting mail. PLUS: Once, I was out of town a few days and returned to find no mail: when I inquired, they handed me a plastic bag, heavy from the weight of wet, soggy mail -- I didn't ask. At least it didn't smell like urine. This morning when I visited the station at 195 - 41st St. to speak to the Manager about not delivering mail on 1/7/20, a postal employee told me: "The Manager's on vacation." Then I announced I would go downtown to Alice St. to speak to the Postmaster General and she said: "He's on vacation, too". Then I asked to speak to a station Supvr. Her response: "They're too busy to come talk with you". Then I asked her to go ask, anyway. She cooperated. She returned with: "All three supervisors are out of the building". I had to ask her to repeat it to make sure I was understanding correctly: Yes, there were three supervisors and all of them were not in the building at 10:30am this morning. I'm submitting a Complaint to the Postmaster General of Oakland (201 - 13th Street, Room 213, Oakland, CA 94612), and if I get time, also to the head of the USPS at L'Enfant Plaza, DC (USPSOIG.gov).
