I'd love to know why there's a phone number if nobody answers it? My package has been just sitting in their facility for 2 days now and the status has been saying "in transit". Merrifield is 20 minutes away, throw in the other delivery routes and it still should not take 2 days. My package passed through here en route to California. Apparently, this place is the Bermuda Triangle. My package magically diappeared. Multiple calls to USPS, Consumer Affairs, USPS supervisors have been an utter waste of time. It's a wonder how an organization like this can stay in business.. Oh wait, it's the government, and normal things that other businesses do every day ARE NOT applicable to the USPS. According to a recent article, USPS just lost $2 Billion in 3 months. That amount of negative cashflow is an artform in itself. You can't do that organically, you have to work carefully to do that. read more

The reason I am giving a post office a 5-star rating is because this is the only office that does not require an appointment to get a passport (that I know of). Other offices I've called did not have an open appointment until the following month. Not only was i able to register for my passport within the same day, my passport arrived in the mail within 2 1/2 weeks! It wasn't priority either. I may just be lucky but that's pretty damn efficient. As for the wait in line, it was bearable. What do you expect from a government facility anyways? read more

I agree that merrifield needs to be sweeped for packages that have not left the distribution center. I have several that were logged into Merrifield 2.5 weeks ago and no tracking activity after that. Apparently a package I sent to my friend in VA has arrived here and gotten lost in some void. It's "departed" this facility twice and has yet to get to its destination which is maybe 45 mins from this post office. This post office was hands down the worst one I've ever been to because of the staff. They were incredibly rude and unfriendly. I felt as though the man was talking down to me the entire time and was impolite with his explanations. I ended up leaving and going to a UPS store on George Mason Blvd. The people at the George Mason store were so much nicer and even apologized for the post office staff. Funny though it may seem to be impressed by a post office but this particular location simply flored me. It's not that the building is particularly new or sparkly & shiny. It's not that their staff are particularly friendly--although they were helpful in shortening the line by offering on-the-spot assistance for issues that do not need a teller. Instead, what really got me hooked is tat the branch is open until 8 pm weekdays. However, what impressed me most is that this place is open later--until 5 pm--on Saturdays (not the 2 pm that most other branches keep) aaaaand it is open until 5 pm on Sunday. No, really! What a crappy post office- employees are slow and rude! Avoid if you can. Huge waste of time- I'll use FedEx or UPS next time.

This Post Office is always busy and is a pretty large location. They have long and accessible hours and staff usually walking around to assist people using the self-service machines and other things to make sure people are in the right line, purchasing the right items, etc. Counter staff are kind of dry but not mind-blowingly rude. The only minor inconvenience we've ever had were when using the Passport Office. Nothing on their website suggests an appointment is needed, but we entered and were yelled at by the lady to go stand in line to get an appointment. (No way to do it over the phone or online, she added.) After waiting in the regular line for about 15 minutes, one of those aforementioned staff who walked around told us we needed to go to a separate counter to make a passport appointment. There were none for two weeks. Luckily, we had just enough time before our trip to make this happen. When we went back to the passport office *with an appointment*, everything went smoothly, even if a bit unfriendly. It's the neighborhood post office, what else is there to say? It's larger and offers more services than the one in Dunn Loring, so I'd probably choose this one over DL. read more

I have to say I've been coming here for a couple of months now to ship my packages. I love that it is open til 8pm during the weekdays which really accommodates my busy schedule. Annual Christmas procrastination found me once more in line on a Sunday at the Merrifield Post Office where the staff was their usual cheery and efficient self, keeping people's spirits up and the line moving. Having someone out front to answer questions and triage the line certainly helped things. I've wandered through these doors due to my poor planning often enough that I'm sure some friends must think I've moved with all the Merrifield postmarks on birthday cards and such. I'm sorry they've had to cut back their hours due to the financial plight of the USPS in general, but the extended hours they do still have (and the fact their open on Sundays) still gives them high marks in my book. read more

Used the self help. Easy in and out. Big fans haven't tried the normal mailing by the self help section was great. No line and easy to use. However, the chute got stuck for a second but with a firm push it was all fine. Didn't even need to interact with the staff. The line for the normal section seemed to be very long. Though I'm not sure how that was. Overall it was a great experience and would highly recommend. read more

Imagine our "shock and awe" when we stopped by the post office on a Sunday, just to pop an envelope in a mailbox, and discovered it was OPEN ON SUNDAY with FULL COUNTER SERVICE. Very disappointing service. I wanted to send a LETTER, but the clerk charges me for an LARGE ENVELOPE. Is this how they are trained by management? To charge the customer the highest amount they possibly can and not the best and cheapest option? I didn't want tracking and was mailing a letter size... not an envelope! I even checked the usps website and qualify fir a letter mail under the measurements and weight and oh my I feel robbed. That's not a good way of running business. Very unsatisfying experience for me. How can I trust the service? I'm even concerned my LETTER would be categorized wrong in their little machines because they charged me for a large envelope. Getting a passport is similar to a dentist appt, necessary, wanted, but a bit tough to get through. Best advice -- Be prepared. 1) single side application; 2) black ink only; 3) arrive early; 4) photos on-site, but we brought our own just in case the equipment went down; 5) a state issued birth certificate which they retain; 6) photo ID; 7) cash/debit card/cashier's check, not credit card; 8) chair; 9) blanket; and, 10) if you need a bathroom, buy something from the gas station as a thank you because they have a very nice bathroom though single stall, unisex. As the post office personnel advised: The line starts outside the passport door, not inside the post office, and snakes down and around toward the gas station. I have a photo that I hope to post even though it only shows half the line. We arrived at 6am for the Sat 9am open. Were 1st in line, immediately followed by others. As 9am approached, many family members joined their line holder. Once the door opens, every applicant needs to take a number. After your number is called, if your paperwork is not in order, they tell you that you will lose your place in line and will need to get another number. Today that would have meant come back another day. The three in our group were on our way by 930am. Some of the post office workers are a lot nicer than the others. Customer services here was super!! Office hours here in Merrifield was same as any others place. However, passport office does not need any appointment, walk in is available. Making sure checking office hour on time, and prepare the required documents, everything will be promptly done in a timely manner. Staffs here are very nice and helpful. They are always help answering any questions about postal services. I did stop by today, and wonder if my mails need to be registered? Guess what, the staffs helped me out, and even explained the different between registered mail and certified mail. Location itself is in the center of Merrifield area, lot of customers in this area. Even, the long line, but they worked fast. Huge parking lot available. Easy to access. read more

I was on line for passport processing when a baby need to be pictured and all the 3 post office attendants are all focused on this baby while that baby # 7 while the waiting # are increasing so I commented - there's goes all the employee attention on the baby . When my turn # comes the attendant S. Butler was very rude as I told her I just following the other day attendant to bring my document and snappily she ask the processing of the paper was outside I don't have to be on that line so I said where do I pay for money oh here .. keep saying I have to process it outside so rudely .. and Unprofessional . This is used to be my primary post office, but I recently moved. I would come here to box items and send them out. Whenever I needed assistance, the employees always guided me in the right direction and provided excellent feedback. They politely said bye every time I left. As well, they have a passport office. I had very good experiences with this location of USPO services before when stopped by, although it's truly crowded and always long line. I was impressed by their courtesies and professional manners when they tried to speed up the sevices by having additional nice personnel to maintain the order of the long line. However the reason I gave 3 *** s here is, my home address' mail box was always stuffed by mis-carried mails almost in a daily base for a horrible few years! Can you image it my dear fellow country men or women ? Then I addressed it nicely, gently and friendly to my local postal offices' supervisors, by both calls and walk-in s (quite a few times), they rushed me (due to busy) to the main office of this location (Merrifield, VA 22116 or 22082) with its phone number, to address my concerns. However when I called the phone number listed here, also given by other postal offices, the "consumer affair no#" here is a FOREVER male recording! Not a single time they answered or returned me, for my personal mails mis-deliveried by USPO's federal employees who are supposed to be highly trained for their professional ethics! Finally I had no choice rather contacted their Federal Postal Inspector's hot-line no#, located in Arlinton County, VA here as a headquarter in nationwide, by leaving a message of a call and by dropping a certified and a regular mail (seemed each) to complain strugglingly. But I got an even worse result of, only a post card inserted into an open envelop responded to me, with a "bureaucratic" (maybe far more than that) line of wording, saying my concern has been entered into their database, and referring me back to that hot-line no# or the "consumer affair no#" here again! My kind fellow ladies and gentlemen of human beings, could you image that? It looks like they, as reasonably good paid government employees, referring to the inspector's offices and the customer care office not the front line workers over the counters, compare to the average individual income of the US (not compare to the private sector of million dollars paid of CEO, COO, CFO etc., of course), and with a governmental stable employment status of, without any concerns of being laid off or fired with or without causes, of being LAZY (far more than that maybe?). They highly possible just carelssly sit there in the front of their offices' desks, chatting to each other, looking at their cellular phones, going into social media like the current president (although he's working ardently for the ppl in the US anyhow), on Twitter or Facebook or Integram etc.. Who knows, no one could watch them as federal gov. employees in the office behind the closed doors, rather than they really worked, to serve the PEOPLE who paid tax for their gov. employments to make their ends meet. But, as a credt I would give here, my mail-delivery by postal service become somehow "normal" (not exactly, as updated today, 12/17/17) in last a few months. Since then, basically it has returned to its normal business for many years in a row in a long long past, a good memory I once carried as so warm, by their so professional, and so accurate (most of the time) deliveries from their kind personnel! I've called 5 times today to follow up with someone - 2 out of the 3 times I called a lady picked up, extremely rude and immediately put me on hold and never took me off hold. Merrifield Post Office -- what a bad job!! The Vienna, Va Post Office directed me to Merrifield to hand-cancel wedding invitations -- to keep them from being mangled by the machine. Merrifield would not let me hand-cancel myself (as some post offices will)-- but said they would do it later themselves. [Could not promise the folks "downstairs" would avoid putting them through the machine, but they would give it a shot.] Turned out they did not even try. Got my copy of the invitation in the mail. Envelope is damaged, dirty, and some of ink has been rubbed off the address. (Still readable in my case, but I worry about the other envelopes...) Nothing else I received in the mail looks this bad. read more

Horrible service... So this location and the Woodbridge location allow walk ins. I'm aware I'm going to have to wait but i got here a little past 8 AM and there was only one person working passports which was Jim. I'm sorry but if you have up to 25 tickets for people getting passports. That doesn't mean you have a full on conversation with each customer. And another thing, instead of having your employer pause what he's doing and have to repeatedly remind people of what they need for their passport appointment is ridiculous. Jim wasted 5-10 min each time doing that and on top of that I sat here watching Jim converse with each person about nothing that had to deal with why those people were there. Please keep the conversations minimal. Luckily two more employees were eventually called out to help but that wasn't done until 9:30/10:00 AM. Needs some organization. read more

A friend suggested this location as they do not require an appointment for passport application. However, as many have suggested, it is highly advisable to arrive by 7:00am (6:00am just to be safe) as the line tends to take off around 7:00. My friend had to go back twice due to bad information about when they opened and the long line. She advised me to be there around 5:30am. I arrived at 5:00 and was the sole person in the parking lot until 6:00am. I ended up being #2 in line because I waited in my car until 6:00am... when a lady pulled up and walked up to the door. The line started to grow at 7:00am and continued until the doors opened at 9:00am. A friendly postal worker came out and directed us to file inside and to remain in order -- we would get a number ticket as we entered. NOTE: One ticket for each applicant is required. Once everyone was inside, Jim (Postal worker) explained the process and procedures to us. he also went over the costs, different options, etc. As noted in another review, only CASH, CHECK, MONEY ORDER or DEBIT CARDS are accepted for payment. NO CREDIT CARD PAYMENT CAN BE MADE TO DEPT. OF STATE. After Jim gave the instructions he began to call the first number. Turns out the mom ahead of me was getting passports for her two kids. They were #1 and #2... as a result I ended up #3. No big deal, because as soon as Jim started with 1 and 2... my number was called by another postal worker. This is my first passport and given the previous reviews, I was expecting the worst... An ALL DAY affair!!! Nothing further from the truth!!! I was out and in my car at 9:16!!! Sweet!! I was shocked at how smoothly the process went. I had my application completed and photos taken prior to arrival. I even had copies of IDs as well as certified birth certificate all neatly organized and ready to go. Badda bing, badda boom... done. Easy as pie!! NOTE: Jim stated that they could do the photo and make copies onsite if needed. Thoroughly impressed and happy that my experience wasn't as others have described. I couldn't be happier about using this facility. Excellent experience with the staff. Expedited service and I should have my documents in 2-3 weeks!! read more

Went there as a walk-in at 2:00 pm on a Saturday. I was one of the last people to get a ticket. It was about a 3 hour wait, but eventually did get out passports taken care of. One problem: I didn't think my kids needed to be there to get theirs done ( dumb move, I know). So I still needed to come back with the kids. I was dreading it all week to bring a 2 year old and 6 year old so I did some calling around... Word of advice to all in the NOVA area...Make a trip down to KING GEORGE, VA Smoot Library! The customer service line was not answered at 9:00 a.m. or at 9:18 a.m. on Thursday, May 4, 2017. The office is scheduled to open at 9:00 a.m. per the posted schedule. Very frustrating and extremely poor customer service. I received a significantly better response and action from Mary at the toll free USPS number. She promptly responded to my query after establishing most effective telephone rapport with me. It is my sincere hope that the personnel at the Merrifield take notice of the superb customer service exhibited by Mary and make it a part of their behavior. My assessment is definitely split...very poor for the Merrifield location and excellent for Mary at the toll free USPS number. read more

Both my husband and I took the day off to go renew my 16 year old son's passport. We called them earlier during the week to confirm their working hours. The voice message stated that they are open from 9-2 and no appointment was necessary. As a matter of fact, although I wanted an appointment, there was no option to do so. I went on their website and again, could not find a link to schedule an appointment. So today (Friday 4/14/17), we went to the post office at 9:30. There was a sign stating "Due to excessive applicants we will not be taking in anymore passport applications for today...." So within 30 minutes of opening the window, they were practically closed to the public. This was an extremely frustrating experience and I am still trying to find out how to make an appointment with them. read more

In setting up a meeting to complete my passport it was virtually impossible to get anyone on their "passport line". After calling five or six times at different times of the day with no answer and no chance to leave a message, I decided to let it ring. It literally rang for five minutes before anyone picked up and I was finally able to make an appointment. I tried calling again to confirm my appointment time and...no answer. I let it ring again for five minutes. No answer. Their setup for receiving these calls is 100% ineffective. On the day of my appointment I dealt with a woman named Yun who was curt and rude. When I asked her a basic question she told me to read the instructions that came with my form...the form that I had stapled together and given to her already. She also tried to convince me to re-take my passport photo (which I had had professionally done already) because a tiny sliver of the face fell outside of the guide. What I had hoped would be a pleasant, easy process (since I had all of my paperwork in order) was an uncomfortable ordeal with a woman who could NOT bring herself to be even remotely pleasant. She was unable to clearly answer questions. Other reviewers are raving, but I did not have a similar experience. read more

As soon as I was walked in I was told to advance to the front of the line by a postal office worker, as there were some people at the counters getting their packages together who appeared to be in line, but they weren't. Their hours for passports are wrong. They say on Saturdays that it is from 11am-2pm. My husband and I went at 1045am thinking we would be early but to our surprise they had no spots left for the day. Apparently you must show up 2-3 hours prior in order to receive a number to be seen that day. This is ridiculous. Just make the time earlier or say that on the phone. Although the post office could be open 24/7 and still have crowds, it does not keep those long hours, but the longest of all Northern Virginia. Because it is also a huge sorting center, I believe mail moves out quickly. Around Saturday, April 3, 2010, I sent a priority mail letter, going to Las Vegas, at 5:10 PM from the small deposit area off to the left of the mail building. It says you can deposit up to 8:00 PM, so I figured that means they pick up the mail until 8 PM. I think I was right because the priority letter arrived at the addressee's house on Monday morning, April 5, or in much less than 48 hours Washington to Las Vegas. They must have had it on the plane in a hurry to do that for $4.90. Anyway, remember this when you want to mail something and are hoping for pickup and delivery as fast as they can go. read more
