This shows the amount of staff at the window this place is bloody awful.

This deserves 0 stars the absolute worst post office ever known to man. You will wait here forever. Disorganized. understaffed. They don't care how long you have been waiting for service. It is the GHETTO post office. No stars. I wish there was a negative star rating. Just bloody awful. He can forbid that your package comes here. Heaven forbid.

Short staffed, slow service, not the best place to get things done. Very disorganized but what else can you expect you are in jersey city.

If you are looking for a grossly understaffed USPS, then you will strike gold here…read more Typically, they have 1 rep working at the front desks helping customers. On a good day, they may have 2. And on a great day, they may have 3, but one will only help with mail pickups and refuse to assist otherwise. And even when they are fully staffed, you can STILL expect long waits! Unless you arrive during off-peak times, lines are typically long, with about 5+ people and waits of 20+ minutes or better for service. The Indian female rep is normally mean to people and combative. The one with a heavy Caribbean/African accent is nice but works very slowly and tends to make mistakes - like adding on unnecessary costs. Each seems to be generally poorly trained. Among the entire staff, Lisa is the best - she should be running this office. She earned 1 extra star for this rating. Whoever the postmaster is simply doesn't care about this office's operations. He/she doesn't properly staff for peak times, come out to support the team when they are struggling, ensure labels stocked on the floor, or even keep displays presentable. It never ceases to amaze me how supervisors keep their jobs when lower level team members are the ones holding the business together. Lastly, they have a non-standard policy where they won't accept or scan in prelabeled packages. Even if you wait for a rep to be available, the rep will refuse to scan your prelabeled package and directed me to leave it at the counter in a bin: This is borderline fraudulent because all other post offices will scan your package since it's their JOB. I once dropped off a prelabeled package with a gift, they refused to scan it, and it mysteriously disappeared without a trace; my lost package was never resolved because it was never scanned at any point to be traceable! Overall, it's a barely mediocre office - I've seen worse (e.g., the MLK post office), but you should have low expectations here. If you can make the trip, go to the USPS office in Newport, and you will be amazed to see how a good post office is run.

At my most recent visit, the staff were very, very nice. They went around and asked if anyone needed help. This is more than I could ask for from my typical visit.

In my quest to explore the various cuisine scenes and businesses throughout Jersey City and specifically the Heights, my latest exploration was at the United States Post Office Jersey City's location. Generally speaking, I was a fan of the United States postal service; however, I felt the system and its offices were completely outdated and not in-tune with the times. Furthermore, to paraphrase a hilarious "Seinfeld" episode, "No one really needs the postal service because you could do everything electronically now...!" Very true. For my first visit to this office of the U.S. postal service, was I able to get what I needed to be done!? PURCHASE 1st-Class Mail Weighted Mail ($2.59): I needed to send out a packet that contained several pieces of mail to a former tenant. I crammed them all into an envelope and was surprised by the reasonably-low price - sweet! 20pc Buttons/Pins Forever Stamps Sheet ($14.60): If you knew me, I loved collecting stamps (a philatelist!), so whenever I needed to drop off something at a post office, I always had to check what the latest available stamps were. I wasn't as avid as I was years ago when I followed the arrival dates of collectible editions and the like. Now, I was pretty much a casual collector. On this particular date, they had these cool button/pins edition with cheery happy messages - yes! https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&start=48&select=SyihBLb_3bLxPaNfjZul0Q SERVICE A spirited older woman behind a thick Plexiglass counter window called me over as I was the only customer at the time, weighted my package, slapped a postage sticker on it, showed me a selection of stamps they currently had, I paid, and off I went; easy-peasy - 'nuff said! PARKING (Unknown; N/A this instance) This was an easy flat 10-minute walk from my friend's place. Otherwise, the only option was the plenty of spots along the main drag of Central Ave. and all surrounding roads - 'nuff said. ATMOSPHERE, DÉCOR, AMBIENCE A small narrow space that funneled you inward towards the counter windows, there were P.O. Boxes along the side walls, a couple of mail drop-off boxes, a center writing table, and minimal postings on the walls. To be frank, this was kind of a depressing location. Decent amount of natural lighting came through the front windows and doors while soul-sucking fluorescent bright electric ceiling lights filled in the rest. There weren't any TVs nor background music. ATTIRE Totally casual, so I would normally be in a t-shirt, boardshorts, and flip-flops. OVERALL Jersey City's United States Post Office location served my basic needs and would consider them again. However, the overall dungeonesque aesthetics needed a lot of help; there simply weren't any positive vibes, and I couldn't wait to get back outside. Having said that, it appeared they offered all of the main amenities as other post offices I've been to and the service was no-nonsense straightforward, but this was the most dreadful of all locations I've been to. I found good value based on the prices, service, and experience noted above (TOTAL paid experiences was around $17.00 BEFORE any discounts and/or tip). And, they accepted my credit card of choice... Or do any things to prevent such arrogant behavior? There has to be some accountability What can be done to improve their performance?

I actually had to update that for them on their Google for business listing. Who is in charge of that anyway? Who manages this location? They're doing a terrible job. The Indian lady that works there, has had an attitude on multiple trips I've had to endure at this location. Very rude - how do you even have a job? Customer service should be too notch when dealing with mail. I did want to point out the other lady that works there, Yanina...she is amazing! She is always polite, smiling , always helpful never sarcastic . You should hire more people like Yanina. If it weren't for her - I would've given one star. When she's not behind the counter, I catch myself rolling my eyes having to deal with the other so-called staff they have there. I only deal with the BS because I don't have too many local options.

In fact, the only station in the city open on Sundays and a lifesaver for those who started writing holiday cards on the Friday before Christmas. Peering into the "envelopes" mail slot, thousands of pieces of mail were visibly overflowing the sacks, requiring some gingerly wedging of my small booklet-worth of correspondence in between others. Fingers crossed all made it out ok! Shoutout to one of two staff working the two open counters at 5pm on Sunday December 21, you were friendly, prompt and helpful and put your best foot forward for terrific customer service. Only 2 counters were open and the line was about a dozen people long, steadily moving. For service--a solid 5 stars. Facilities are as expected a bit on the older side, being built in 1912 as part of the original Penn Station complex, though the modern conveniences of tap-to-pay technology and self-service weigh/postage stations are available. Waiting in line, the details on the ceiling caught my attention. Maybe because the darker evening outside accentuated the brighter interior, the simultaneously ornamental, scrolling flourishes fitted in repeating geometric patterns stood out in ways I hadn't noticed before. Come to find after some googling the ceiling is decorated with the country seals of 11 countries including the US, the countries part of the universal postal union at the time of construction, an administrative body now under the purview of the United Nations that handles international shipping policies. Not very fun facts: designated a national historic landmark in 1973 and re-named after James Farley, 53rd U.S. Postmaster General in 1982. Previously generically named the General Post Office. Slightly more fun fact: atop the facade along 8th Avenue the inscription reads, "Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds." Some may confuse this to be the creed of the U.S. Postal Service, but it's actually not. Rather, it's tied to the tribute that building architect William Mitchell Kendall paid to major historical figures credited with postal advancements. This is an excerpt out of Herodotus's 'Histories', which described the messenger system established in Persia by Cyrus the Great.
