(Serviced/Shopped 04/08/2025 TU @ 12:00pm): I might be united in saying that my state of being was drained at this post office! In my quest to explore the various cuisine scenes and businesses throughout Jersey City and specifically the Heights, my latest exploration was at the United States Post Office Jersey City's location. Generally speaking, I was a fan of the United States postal service; however, I felt the system and its offices were completely outdated and not in-tune with the times. Furthermore, to paraphrase a hilarious "Seinfeld" episode, "No one really needs the postal service because you could do everything electronically now...!" Very true. For my first visit to this office of the U.S. postal service, was I able to get what I needed to be done!? PURCHASE 1st-Class Mail Weighted Mail ($2.59): I needed to send out a packet that contained several pieces of mail to a former tenant. I crammed them all into an envelope and was surprised by the reasonably-low price - sweet! 20pc Buttons/Pins Forever Stamps Sheet ($14.60): If you knew me, I loved collecting stamps (a philatelist!), so whenever I needed to drop off something at a post office, I always had to check what the latest available stamps were. I wasn't as avid as I was years ago when I followed the arrival dates of collectible editions and the like. Now, I was pretty much a casual collector. On this particular date, they had these cool button/pins edition with cheery happy messages - yes! https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&start=48&select=SyihBLb_3bLxPaNfjZul0Q SERVICE A spirited older woman behind a thick Plexiglass counter window called me over as I was the only customer at the time, weighted my package, slapped a postage sticker on it, showed me a selection of stamps they currently had, I paid, and off I went; easy-peasy - 'nuff said! PARKING (Unknown; N/A this instance) This was an easy flat 10-minute walk from my friend's place. Otherwise, the only option was the plenty of spots along the main drag of Central Ave. and all surrounding roads - 'nuff said. ATMOSPHERE, DÉCOR, AMBIENCE A small narrow space that funneled you inward towards the counter windows, there were P.O. Boxes along the side walls, a couple of mail drop-off boxes, a center writing table, and minimal postings on the walls. To be frank, this was kind of a depressing location. Decent amount of natural lighting came through the front windows and doors while soul-sucking fluorescent bright electric ceiling lights filled in the rest. There weren't any TVs nor background music. ATTIRE Totally casual, so I would normally be in a t-shirt, boardshorts, and flip-flops. OVERALL Jersey City's United States Post Office location served my basic needs and would consider them again. However, the overall dungeonesque aesthetics needed a lot of help; there simply weren't any positive vibes, and I couldn't wait to get back outside. Having said that, it appeared they offered all of the main amenities as other post offices I've been to and the service was no-nonsense straightforward, but this was the most dreadful of all locations I've been to. I found good value based on the prices, service, and experience noted above (TOTAL paid experiences was around $17.00 BEFORE any discounts and/or tip). And, they accepted my credit card of choice... Sometimes, there can be an insane weight at USPS. I've been to this location at all different times of day, and I've never really had to wait more than 5 to 10 minutes. At my most recent visit, the staff were very, very nice. They went around and asked if anyone needed help. They visited people in line to make sure they were bringing up the right things for what they needed. And the lady working at the cashier was very pleasant. This is more than I could ask for from my typical visit. read more

Don't know what the other reviews are on about ,this place is great. It's one of the better post offices I've been to. They all suck a bit but this one sucks the least. Tellers are direct and helpful. read more

Do not use their mailbox infront of the post office. I mailed a check and my mail was stolen and my check was cashed. Apparently, the mail receptacle is opened up and mail is stolen regularly. read more

Maybe line moves a little faster, depending on when you go, but be prepared. Some of the staff aren't very professional and talk to each other (and on their phone!) while ignoring the line. read more

Would qualify for more stars if they would open more windows when the line is almost reaching the door. Counter people are courteous but overworked. read more

1 MFN employee scanning everyones package into the system. 1. JUST 1. I waited 20 MINUTES in line. By the time it was my turn she told me I couldn't ship my package because I had the wrong box. I needed to PAY EXTRA for an envelope, and wait AGAIN at the back of line. She should have told me that from the beginning instead of looking at me through the window. I just picked up my crap and left. Save your money and time. Slow service. Foh. Go kick rocks. read more

Incredibly nice people working against great odds to perform a valuable public service with kindness and professionalism. Thanks, Heights USPS! read more

Horrendously bad!! Don't waste your time especially the lady name "Shilpa" has no knowledge and etiquettes. I had a return to USPS and she was in denial to read the label. I request to management to please look into it. read more

This is my local post office.Located on Central Ave.Parking is a pain in the @ss in the area. So I park behind the laundrymat across the street.Customer service can be a bit surly, but how would you feel dealing with people 8hrs a day behind a glass? I'm just there for a book of stamps & mail a letter that needs a confirm.Try to get here early as the lines can get very long.Usually have only 2 agents at the window & another on a break. Maybe 3 agents would work a lot better. That just makes to much sense. I guess. read more

This place is a special slice of misery and has been getting worse over the last few years. I've never had a problem with local delivery but dread missing a package because it means a visit to this outpost. Garbage all over the floors and slow service at the windows. Lines moves at a glacial pace so it gives me plenty of time to witness the poor service. I once had to step in because a young man asked politely for help with his PO box and was told "I don't have time for this, go away". Another woman was charged for 6 months of a PO box and no mail was ever delivered because there was tape on the back of the box indicating that it was broken (it wasn't). They wouldn't give her her mail until she paid for another 6 months! What a racket. Thanks Mark S. for the heads-up about the laundromat parking lot. JC USPS,please get an automated postage machine. read more

The WORST post office. I dread going but usually end up at this location because I have a PO Box there, and it's the closest to where I live. The absolute worst is when I miss a USPS delivery to my apartment and have to pick up the package at the post office. When that happens, I feel like the universe hates me and wants me to suffer. What's so bad about this post office, you may ask? Well, there's usually only one person working, and that person usually seems like he or she hates life. The line is always at least 10 people long, no matter what time of day you go. DEFINITELY don't go right before closing time because you will absolutely regret it. Everything is a mess, and it looks so run-down. Need to fill out paperwork or write an address on an envelope? Good luck finding a pen. Better local options for post offices are the one at five corners, the big post office in Downtown Jersey City or even the one in Downtown Hoboken. Just do yourself a favor and don't come. read more

Here's another 1 star. Came in this morning. 1st person of the morning and the place wasn't even swept. No kidding the sidewalk outside was cleaner. This is not an exaggeration. Nothing but weird/bad experiences here. read more

I live in Jersey City Heights. I normally have my packages delivered to my job because of problems I have had with this post office in the past, but I really enjoy coming home and finding a package to open, it's something to look forward to after a long day at work Things had been ok with 07306 Central Ave but then, out of nowhere, my tracking information reads "no secure location". I've been seeing this alot recently. To me that translates into "I am too lazy to deliver your package today, but maybe I will deliver it another day if you are lucky". but then 2 days late I receive a package from someone else no problem. The location hasn't changed. I have a secure location, always have. And now the other day, they left a slip in my mail box in lieu of leaving my package. So I filled it out and taped it to in a very conspicuous place in the hallway by the mailboxes. The signed notice had been there for 4 days now. Now I have to deal with my favorite postal workers this Saturday to pick up my package that should have been delivered a week ago. I am now back to haveing all of my packages sent to my work post office at 07047 Tonnelle Avenue now, they seem to still care about getting my packages to me on time and they are very friendly. read more

By far the worst of the worst. I found a decent time to go. Around 2 in the afternoon. It normally takes 20-30 minutes for you to get in and out, after 2, under 10 minutes. In the morning they have one person at the window that has to do everything herself. When they have two people, it is no better. There are too many idiots that do not know how to ship a simple package or are so confused. Please make a simple sign to show people how to put their return and shipping addresses on properly. It might speed things up. It also takes at least an extra day if not two to get your mail delivered in this zip code. They also lost then found a Christmas present after tracking said it was delivered and never was until 10 days later. Postmaster was not helpful and is never in. Have a stamp vending machine! It should not take 30 minutes to buy 5 stamps. read more

Unfortunately since the post office service is a necessity, complaining about the customer service will not result in any type of change. It's so bad, though...that won't stop me. Since I am forced to come here, I've since learned how to communicate with the clerks to alleviate any nasty vibes. I will say they are not friendly. Their attitude says "I hate being here and therefore will make you miserable as well." I once was came to the desk with a tracking number written down that I had checked and was awaiting my pick up. Instead of just looking for the package, I was asked to pull up the tracking details on my phone, and then put my phone under the secured window for the clerk to paw through my phone to see "where does it say the package is at this post office?!" Literally would have taken 60 seconds to physically look for the package, but instead decided to demand taking my personal property and trying to demean my knowledge. VERY UNPROFESSIONAL. This is just one example of the numerous times I have had a negative experience. And every time I'm paying attention to other customers, they are also receiving bad customer service. As if that's not enough, this is the ONLY post office I've ever been to that won't tape up priority boxes free of charge (IT COMES WITH THE PRIORITY MAILING SERVICE) and also the only location that doesn't have chained pens out on the mailing tables. These people get a decent salary. We understand not everyone can be bubbly and smiles... But there's no excuse for the shameful act of belittling people. read more

I wish I could give ZERO stars. This is definitely the worst post office in the entire country. The only time I have encountered a tolerable line is right when it first opens. Otherwise, there are at least 10-15 people waiting, usually more. They never have all the windows open. The workers are slow and completely miserable. On one occasion, I actually witnessed a worker stick her head out from the back, look at the line and say, "I'm not opening another window! There's too many people out there!" Additionally, delivery is atrocious for packages. 9 times out of 10, the delivery person doesn't ring my buzzer and someone is always home so I know this. Then, no notification is left. I have had items returned to sender because I didn't know they had actually arrived. Important items! At other times, I have tracked my items online only to find out they were not delivered even though someone was home. Since no notification is ever left, I have gone to the post office to get my package and no one could find it. This has happened more than once. Also, I have called them on several occasions, let the phone ring 25 times - no answer. HORRIBLE read more

People in the ghetto have this mentality that if you are in the ghetto with them you must be ghetto like them... Too bad you can't wear your class or couth on your sleeves. Hell, even if you did, these slobs wouldn't care. With that said, this place is godawful. Long lines. Only 1 1/2 clerks working or windows open (how ever you want to look at it). It's one of the most depressing places on depressing Central Avenue. The clerks are disgustingly rude and miserable. They even look tired and depressed. Smile you m**********r! You're working!! You're breathing!! You're alive!!! Been there in the past to pick up packages that my ghetto mail carrier decided not to deliver or leave info notices for (trust me if you live in The Heights it will happen sooner or later), and the spicy chica in the last window to the left said five words to me and four of them didn't involve eye contact. What a sad human. I've had all deliveries re delivered to my house since. Went in today to send off some packages and I wont be returning. Not that they care because nuclear warfare wouldn't even terminate postal employees, but this review is for you guys, the customers. And I do what I can to help. The male clerk (no pun). Indian type guy (last window to the right) nearly grew ovaries when I asked to borrow his pen. "Make sure you bring it back!" He shouted as he slammed it under the money slot. LOL! As if I'm going to steal one of the several government provided pens that you have on your desk (that my tax dollars paid for). You'd have thought I asked this guy to write me a blank check and give me free postage the way he acted. Poor CS. After packaging my items, I was helped by the Indian woman (middle window). She was more polite than her coworkers but she didn't seem engaging. I left with my receipt and vowed that this would be my last time inside of the Hudson City post office and trekking the increasingly depressing, Michael Yun ubiquitous, Central Avenue. Do yourself a favor, hop in your car (or lyft) and go to the post office in West Orange or somewhere where they really value their jobs, their customers, and appreciate human kind. read more

I don't remember the last post office I was in and left thinking, "Well, that was a marvelous experience!" This place will also not knock your socks off in a positive way, but I've been to worse post offices (I always left the one on the Upper East Side at 3rd Ave and 91st feeling dejected and as though I had done innumerable things incorrectly, which caused their employees to get irate and yell). Make sure you have proof of address if you expect to actually pick up a package. Also, follow all of the rules. read more

Garbage. Absolute garbage. Inconsistent with delivery. Request re-delivery? Good luck. Zero attempt will he made and your package will be sent back to sender. Not the first time dealing with this nonsense. read more

To keep this as short as possible, this is the worst post office I have ever encountered, possibly the worst in the country. I am a freelancer and most of my paychecks come via mail, so this is a huge problem considering this branch handles delivery for my neighborhood and things have gone missing or been extremely delayed on numerous occasions. Last Thursday, a check was sent out to me, and it is now the next Friday, and it still hasn't arrived (over a week later). Here is the exchange I had with the rep at the post office: Rep: Did it have delivery confirmation and a tracking number? Me: No. It is a plain flat envelope, just sent normally through the mail. Rep: Well, it really needs a tracking number and confirmation. Me: But doesn't that cost extra? Rep: Yes, but how else can we keep track of it without a tracking number? Me: ...I don't know, but I think it is your job to know. Rep: You can call back tomorrow morning between 8 and 9 and talk to the carrier. Me: 8 AM and 9 AM? (Yeah, fun fact, you have to call in that one hour period, which isn't listed anywhere, or else you can't speak to them until the next day, even if the offices are still open.) Rep: Yes. Me: Umm, no. That's not happening. This needs to get resolved today. Rep: Do you want me to give you a time when you can call back when he WON'T be here? Me: ...Are you kidding me? Rep: Well, he's out on his route right now. Me: And there is no way to contact him? He doesn't have a cell phone? Rep: I'm not giving out carriers' personal cell phone numbers. Me: I'm not asking you to, I'm asking for YOU to call HIM and find out what is happening here. Rep: I'm not giving out carriers' personal cell phone numbers. Me: Again, not asking you to. Rep: I mean, what do you want me to do? Do you want me to go through every letter here and see if we have it? Me: YES. Do that, right now. At that point, she took my name and number to call me back. Still no call back. The business was nice enough to resend the check via FedEx yesterday, which arrived today shortly after my phone call with the post office. read more

I have to agree with my fellow Yelpers. Avoid this post office if possible. I stopped in to mail a single letter that was a bit overweight, so I needed to purchase the correct postage. It was an odd hour, so I hoped it wouldn't be busy. I also thought I might be able to just buy the correct postage at an automated machine. Sadly, this store does not have automated machines. The line was crazy long, because the tellers were really slow, and the line was barely moving, not because it was really crowed. While I was waiting in line, there were two people in front of me coming to collect packages with those missed delivery slips...they couldn't find either...2 people had lost packages! The place was also really dirty. read more

The phone literally rang 20 times before they picked up. They put me on hold for over half an hour. I called from my other phone and it rang another 10 times. They answered and were rude. I'm expecting they never were going to answer the other call as I am still on hold just to piss them off. read more

One of the main women working there, won't help you. Infact, she'll do anything in her power to make the process more difficult. The service as a whole is a disaster as well. Wow - went to the JC Post Office today. All of the employees were standing around glaring at us as we walked in. "The computers are down, we can't do anything" they said as they turned their backs on me. The postal workers here are the worst! The absolute worst postal service I've ever experienced. Numerous times I have scheduled a package pick up from my home and it's never picked up and I still get the email at the end of the day that the pick up was successful ! Really, I think not. It's unfortunate and a disgrace to the USPS! read more

Pretty much the worst!! Always a long line. Never any parking even though it has its own parking lot. Most of the spots are reserved for government officials. The place is a mess and the line never seems to move. Also watch out for those people that pretend they don't know that there's a line and walk right up to the front. read more

If I could give negative stars, I would. The only *good* thing about this office/location is that the counter windows are listed open until 5 PM. Wait, there wasn't a line, either. OK, those two things do make it one star. The woman behind the double thick bullet-proof glass did not make eye contact once. She shu-shu'd with another woman four windows over the whole time (by the way, no she's not with him any more). I was asked one question (are there any hazardous materials in my small, priority mail boxes?) - but nothing about wanting confirmation signatures (yes, that was something I would have gotten) or money back. They obviously felt that I was interrupting this important conversation and wanted me to go - quickly. read more

Wow. First, when other postal workers complain about the Central Ave Post Office, THERE'S A PROBLEM. I work and live in the area, I have a small business and constantly mail items out on a daily basis. If it wasn't for my SUPER AWESOME local mail man AL, I would move from this neighborhood just to have access to a more pleasant and professional post office. It's a tough job, which I personally understand as I deal with people and sales in just the same way, but this place is the epitome of BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE!!! The workers are not helpful, are extremely rude and disgusting. They process your packages without even looking at you in your eyes. Thank goodness they have transferred a few more pleasant people in the office the past few months. Even THAT was done because this location is the worse. I literally wait in line longer then most until I get the SUPER FRIENDLY Indian (East Asian) woman that is not rude like some of the Hispanic female workers. Paula the office supervisor/manager is the most DISGUSTING, RUDE UNPROFESSIONAL individual with no sense of customer service (even over the phone). She speaks to you while eating her lunch, (EW), she speaks to you with that typical ghetto-girl attitude, she is not helpful in any way. I've had packages stolen due to the workers from her location not properly leaving slips in the mail box instead leaving the packages in the public view and she didn't care or help in any way. I speak to this woman once every few months in regards to the SAME problems that I have with their service and its a waste of time. And every time we're on the phone I say...."I don't know if you remember me...we've had this conversation plenty of times" and of course she doesn't respond. Paula is not capable of handling this position and needs to be demoted. They need to bring someone there that can take over the post office and whip it in to shape. Bring positive customer service back and seriously de-possess that place from the ghetto/hood negativeness that wreaks from this place. With all this being said, people PLEASE approach the window and workers pleasantly. Kill them with kindness and maybe eventually it will rub off on them. read more

This is my local post office located on 392 Central Avenue, Jersey City. This place used to be fantastic up to a few years ago. This place needs a strong Supervisor who will go with the mail carriers and show them what a doorbell looks like and how to ring the bell and then show them how to read the names on the mailboxes. How many times have I received a card saying sorry I missed you. I am always home and my doorbell is like a siren so you tell me why you missed me? Second problem now I call animated thing to reschedule and get a confirmation number and still when I call on that date it is still sitting at my post office. I haven't had a problem when I call the Post Office for answers but if you must go down there....I dread their attitudes..
