Parking is ample, plus they have several spots for 10 minute parking right in front of the door. There is a drive up mailbox for drop offs (all post offices should have a drive up mailbox....), and a nice postal store inside for stamps and boxes. The interior looks older, how I remember post offices in the 1980s, but also has several cool displays in Bantam's past. I had no idea they were at risk of being called "Rogersvilles" but why.... and why?!? I want to know more. There is also a take a book, leave a book basket inside the lobby.

Inside, the lighting is very dark, and it doesn't look like it's been redesigned since the 70s. They have a full display of bubble mailers, tape, and boxes. The counter has room for two tellers, and those on duty today were very efficient. They seemed to have a good supply of stamps available. There is some seating, but again.... Think 70s. The post office also has a plaque awarding the location with the Preservation Honor Award in 1983.

I love the picturesque building with its Colonial Revival architecture. It looks like someone's cozy home rather than a government building, a white gabled house complete with a white picket fence, wrought iron railings, a long porch and an American flag waving in the wind! There's a drive up mailbox to drop off your letters right out front. This building is listed among the National register of historic places, from my research it looks like it's been here since 1851. As an added bonus is that this post office shares its space with The Po Cafe next door, where you can have breakfast, lunch, or feast on their delicious baked goods, have a cuppa Joe, and enjoy a lovely view of this quaint town located in Litchfield County reminiscent of Luke's Diner in Stars Hollow for all you GG fans! The postal service is friendly and welcoming. I was able to send some postcards and purchase stamps at this location. The branch doesn't process passports, but you can get money orders, browse through the greeting card kiosk, and of course mail packages, get a P.O. Box and get stamps! Mike was also very patient with me while answering all my ignorant questions about how to "refuse delivery" on a package. There are only a few spots directly in front of the building, but lots of spots further in. The inside looks original to the building, whenever that may be. The boxes are small and there's a lot of brown. It's adorable! They also have a shop inside with plenty of boxes, mailers, cards, and of course stamps. They have frequent turnover in customers (one goes out, one comes in) and sold out of their Christmas stamps at the beginning of December. The employees were really friendly though, even though there is this constant activity.

I've known everyone who works there for years. They are all local people and I see them at other venues/events in town. They know me. Even though December is their busiest month, they still have time to chit-chat and gossip, and even those in line will add details or opinions, as necessary. I'm lucky to get a hello from the counter people at my local PO, so it's a welcome change to what I'm used to. So, my friends and family can't wait to receive a card from "Christmas Town" from me every year. The PO provides cachets (decorative rubber stamps) you can use to personalize your mailing. This is a tedious activity for me, but it's not unusual to see a parent with small children standing around the tables, having fun pressing the stamps onto cards. Interestingly enough, the PO handles 200,000 pieces of mail in December - more than 1000% more than the volume for the rest of the year. Mail is routed through this PO from nearly every state and many foreign countries just for the postmark. If you're close by, or looking for a Christmas day trip (lots to do in the area), make it a point to post your cards from here. Your friends and family will enjoy it.
