I went to this post office several times over the course of a year. It was fine. I mainly mailed…read morestuff from outside, but every once in awhile I had to go inside, either to mail a package, or occasionally because I had an issue with a package that I didn't get or something like that. It was fine, the staff were friendly and helpful enough (not overly so, though). There was often a line to get help from the window, but the staff were pretty timely - I never felt my wait was longer than appropriate for the number of people ahead of me. This post office is on the small side - there is a sizeable area for PO boxes, but I'd say the inside area where the front counter is is actually pretty small. Also, the parking lot is really awkward and for a bunch of the parking spaces you are often backing out into the path of traffic who are entering the lot. For me this often adds stress to the visit, but the convenience(for me) of the location led me to use this post office exclusively, instead of the others in town.

About a year ago I submitted a 3 week hold mail request. Luckily, a neighbor noticed the pile and retrieved it before it got soaked. I recently had my mail held for two weeks. When service had resumed but I had only received 4 pieces of mail I went to the post office to pick up the rest. The female clerk on the desk on 2/27 handed me a loose pile of mail. When I started to go through it I realized that I had at least 25 pieces of mail belonging to 3 different Portsmouth residents who lived at different addresses- credit card and bank statements, letters from health insurers, etc. In the middle of this pile I found a hold mail slip for one of these residents who was not due to return for another 2 weeks! If my two experiences with this post office are an example of how their operations are being run, it appears that some significant changes need to be made.

Everyone here is great and consistently pleasant, even when things are out of their control (because... government). Dealing with the public all day is not easy, but this team handles it with grace and a positive attitude. This is a smaller, older post office (the clerk who waited on me said it was built in the 1930s as a Depression-era federal Works Progress Administration project) and features some interesting architectural details, such as the ornate post office boxes. It's actually pretty cool to see newer technology coexist with old surroundings. Anyway, I was in and out quickly, and the postal worker was friendly and knowledgeable.
