The office is tucked away in a plaza with plenty of parking. When I got in the place had a line up of ten people. It's Christmas and people were mailing their packages. There were two clerks working. They were very cheerful and very quick to serve. Prices were marked on a display on the wall behind the counter. There were empty boxes piled up against the wall on the floor and different sized envelopes were on a rack on a wall. There was a side window where you could drop off your prepaid packages and that saved you from lining up. It's a good little post office that I'm happy I found on Anastasia Island.

I'm not rude and demanding, but even with those who are, I've only observed the staff going out of their way to help. I'm going to address the notary issue stated elsewhere here. Notaries are only supposed to notarize documents signed in front of them. Some will sign with good identifications. I only notarize when I make them resign when I am present. Asking someone to notarize otherwise shows a distinct lack of ethics because you jeopardize the Person's credentials. Why would you do that and then complain they were following the rules? After reviewing the stated rules of a notary, you are not supposed to notarize the signature of someone not present and it is suggested that a signature should only be notarized when signed in front of the notary. Notaries are responsible for notarizing these signatures, even if forged.

The major threat to St. Augustine has always been water from flooding, the tides or storm surge. The dangers of water were first addressed by the Spanish in 1696. They built a coquina and limestone seawall to protect the settlers and soldiers. The US Army rebuilt the wall from 1837-1846 with coquina and cement (Florida became a state in 1845). It held up well for 160 years. In 2012, with the help of a FEMA flood assistance grant, a new 1,200-foot reinforced concrete seawall was fabricated and finished in 2014. This past year on 7 Oct 16, the new and improved seawall got its first test when the Category 3 Hurricane Matthew hit the Florida coast with a seven-foot storm surge on St. Augustine. Water went over the top of the seawall and caused flooding. The wall was built to withstand a Category 1 hurricane. However, if the wall was not in place, the flooding and damage could have been worse. Like many other locals and tourist...we like to walk on these walls but we never really take into account their full purpose or history. Close to the Marina there are some historical markers and information. It is well worth it to walk down the sidewalk or wall to read this information and take it all in. On a side note, these walls are very pretty to include in your pictures at any time of the day. Enjoy!...It's Free! Officially the Alvin G. Shands Bridge, it carries State Road 16 across the very wide Saint Johns…read moreRiver just west of Saint Augustine. It is definitely very narrow - only 34 feet wide. Be aware of traffic in the opposite direction. The first bridge at this crossing opened in 1928: a long wooden toll span with a draw section, running roughly two miles from Orangedale to the west bank. That early structure was practical but fragile, a product of its era and Florida's rapid push to connect riverfront towns. The current bridge, dedicated on 30 October 1963, replaced the wooden span with a modern concrete and steel stringer design, stretching 6662 feet and rising 45 feet above the water for boat clearance. Its architecture is utilitarian Florida mid‑century infrastructure: long, low, rhythmic beams supported by evenly spaced piers, built for durability rather than ornament. The next nearest crossings are the Henry H. Buckman Bridge (I-295) near Jacksonville to the north and the Memorial Bridge in Palatka to the south. A new, higher four‑lane bridge is planned just south of the existing one, with the old span slated for partial removal once the First Coast Expressway connection is complete. That is expected in 2030. There is no toll to cross the Shands Bridge. [Review 1636 of 2025 - 2213 in Florida - 25184 overall]
