What a beautiful, peaceful place! I loved coming here during our trip to St. Augustine this past…read moreweekend. The historic chapel (as well as the newer, larger chapel) are such beautiful places to pray and contemplate the image of Our Lady of La Leche. We didn't get to attend Mass or adoration here, but we came two days in a row and explored the grounds pretty thoroughly. We especially loved the Rosary garden, which has what's essentially a giant Rosary, so you can walk through as you pray. For one person in our group, it was her first time ever praying the Rosary! So the written mysteries on each Our Father "bead" were very helpful. There's also a lovely outdoor Stations of the Cross path, with the tallest cross we'd ever seen. When we looked out over the neighboring water (a bay?), we saw dolphins! While the grounds are open from 9am to 5pm, note that the museum/gift shop building (where the new chapel is) is only open from 10am-4pm. This was a bit of an issue for us because we showed up here at 4pm, then again at 9am the next morning. The gift shop has a good selection of Rosaries, prayer cards, art, and other things you'd find in a Catholic gift shop. If you are Catholic in any capacity, especially if you have a Marian devotion, you will LOVE this place! It reminded me of a much smaller, calmer, and less crowded version of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City. Add this to your Catholic bucket list, or stop by if you're planning to visit St. Augustine!

Be aware of traffic in the opposite direction. The first bridge at this crossing opened in 1928: a long wooden toll span with a draw section, running roughly two miles from Orangedale to the west bank. The current bridge, dedicated on 30 October 1963, replaced the wooden span with a modern concrete and steel stringer design, stretching 6662 feet and rising 45 feet above the water for boat clearance. Its architecture is utilitarian Florida mid‑century infrastructure: long, low, rhythmic beams supported by evenly spaced piers, built for durability rather than ornament. The next nearest crossings are the Henry H. Buckman Bridge (I-295) near Jacksonville to the north and the Memorial Bridge in Palatka to the south. This massive live oak is incredibly old and impressive in person, with huge twisting branches. It's located just off San Marco Avenue near a hotel parking area, so it's easy to access and doesn't take much time to see. Even though it's not a formal park or attraction, the tree itself is the main highlight and really captures the history and natural beauty of the area.

We took an Old Town Trolley tour on Christmas Day 2024 in St Augustine…read more One of the amazing things that we got to see was The Old Senator Tree, which is now about 650+ years old and still doing well and continues to grow in the courtyard of Villa 1565 on San Marco Ave, just a few blocks north of the Historical District in St. Augustine. It is well worth seeing. There are so many other old trees in the vicinity of the Senator and lots of photo opportunities. You get to drive along Magnolia Avenue, which houses many live oak trees, beautiful old mansions, and is a very picturesque street. The Fountain of Youth Archealogical park is also on the way to the Senator. During the Night of Lights, the Senator is beautifully lit up at night and is a huge attraction for tourists.
