I had a PO Box at this Post Office... "had" being the operative term…read more Packages at my building were getting stolen at an alarming rate. Thus, I decided to get a PO Box so my merchandise could be stored in a secure, government building. Plus, I really loved that they have incredible hours, being open until midnight Monday through Friday, and late into the evening on Saturday and Sunday. Alas, this is the only good thing; everything else has been one issue after another. There was a major issue of packages seemingly not being delivered. I would see the tracking notification stating it was, but no 'package waiting' slip in the mailbox. I would bring this to the staff... some of whom checked in the back, while others stated that if there was no slip, it was still moving through the building. After this repeated enough times that some of the staff remembered me, and after I said "the only thing there is the cardboard on the back," he realized that the PO Box was effectively marked as vacant. Uh oh. It was removed, and I thought it would be uphill from there. Nope, there was a further issue. But first, a quick note about Street Addressing. PO Boxes at this Post Office come with Street Addressing, a service where your PO Box comes with a real street address. In trying to find out what this address was, most of the staffers had no clue what I was talking about. I eventually learned what it should actually be from a poster in the hall. Once I knew this from an official USPS source, and the "vacant" sign was removed, I ordered an item to that street address. The UPS tracking showed it as being delivered to the Post Office. However, the package was nowhere to be found. It ended up being a whole lot of finger-pointing, with the package seemingly being swallowed by The Void. After this, I decided it was time to close the PO Box. It was unable to fulfill the function I needed it to, and this is in large part due to negligence (i.e., not taking proper care) by this USPS. Final nail in the coffin: the number of letters that get lost, and the delays if they don't (about a month), are beyond unacceptable.

You get those slips instead and requesting redelivery when you're home is ignored. So during busy shipping times (holidays, etc.) expect to come here and wait in line forever. Some of the employees are more cordial than others. I had both good and poor experiences and you can tell they are all under a ton of stress. One thing I can say is getting upset with them won't help you at all. In this case you have to adopt some kind of zen mind practice because otherwise you'll wind up having a stroke and still nothing will change here.

Would it kill you to put a dang kiosk at one of the always empty stations so that we can at least help ourselves. I just want to drop off prepaid packages and get a dang receipt. AlSo if you're shipping stuff from here, even if it's prepaid, you better get a receipt because I've never had more packages lost in my life than I have from this location. Currently been standing in line for 25 minutes with two people in front of me the line is literally out the door behind me when I tried to scoot forward to make space for the more people. The employee told me that I could not do that and I needed to back up even though there's probably 30 feet between me and him. I said people are standing outside. The feels like temperature is -7. he said that we have to stay in the camera or "they" call to complain to the one person at the counter, trying to actually help people. Get. A. Frickin. This location is extremely poorly managed, and my experiences here have been consistently negative. I have never encountered such a lack of accountability or professionalism. Legitimate complaints are met not with solutions, but with what feels like retaliation--such as packages being mysteriously "misdelivered" or marked delivered when they never arrive. In one instance, a package was thrown over a fence into a vacant lot. In another, a package was marked as delivered but never reached my mailbox, and I have video proof no attempt was made. I have also had packages marked as "attempted delivery, customer requested hold at post office," which is completely false--I have never requested this. My mail and packages are sometimes held at the post office simply because the route carrier does not want to deliver them. Interestingly, substitute carriers consistently deliver my mail correctly and are professional and pleasant. The issues occur only with the regular route carrier. Where I come from, feedback and complaints are addressed proactively and used to correct problems. Here, I have been repeatedly gaslit, told that I am wrong, discouraged from complaining, and ultimately blamed for issues that are clearly not of my making. The manager never resolves anything and deflects responsibility instead of taking corrective action. This is a clear case of mismanagement. Customers should not be treated this way, and ongoing service failures should not be ignored or blamed on the person reporting them. I am now taking my paper trail and evidence to OIG since nothing was resolved.

The Post was named in honor of two Lithuanian-American Pilots, Steponas "Stephen" Darius and Stasys "Stanley" Girenas, whose ill-fated flight in the early days of Transatlantic aviation, garnered considerable attention for its contribution to the history of aviation as well as for its tragic ending. On July 15, 1933, the pair left New York and flew non-stop across the Atlantic Ocean, covering a distance of 3,984 miles (6,411 kilometers) in their single-engine, modified Pacemaker plane Lituanica (Latin for Lithuania). The duration of their flight, a total of 37 hours and 11 minutes (107.1 mph) ranked fourth in the aviation record books of the day; the distance travelled was second to record holders Russel Boardman and John Polando. The flight is regarded as one of the most precise in air navigation history, a remarkable feat considering Lituanica lacked sophisticated navigation equipment and encountered severe weather en route. Lituanica entered the record books for carrying the first Transatlantic airmail delivery, a bag of letters postmarked for Lithuania from the Brooklyn Post Office. The flyers were believed to be shot down by German Nazi artillery, who said the flyers had engine problems and crashed.Despite having enough fuel to complete the journey and the proven skill of the pilots, Lituanica crashed in a forest near the town of Soldin, northeast of Berlin, just 650 km short of Kaunas, Lithuania, its final destination. (The crash site was located in pre-WWII Germany, but the area is considered part of present-day Poland.) An investigation by the Lithuanian government attributed the crash to adverse weather conditions and pilot and/or instrument error. Rumors that the plane had been shot down, on suspicion of being a spy plane or for flying too close to a German concentration camp, were never substantiated. An autopsy completed in Lithuania revealed no evidence that the pilots had sustained bullet wounds. Whether or not the plane had been fired upon could never be ascertained because not all pieces of the aircraft were returned to the Lithuanian government. The Lithuanian-bound mail, nevertheless, was recovered and ultimately delivered. The two heroes are buried in the Aukštieji Stančiai military cemetery in Kaunas, Lithuania. The wreckage of Lituanica is on display at Kaunas's Vytautas the Great War Museum. The post was a Chicago landmark with an actual World War II artillery piece next to the flag pole in the front yard of the Post grounds. The membership was further bolstered by the huge number of returning World War II veterans, replacing the World War I Veterans who had gone to heaven, and the Post was for many years the largest American Legion Posts in the State of Illinois and one of the largest American Legion posts in the USA. This post had a very proud heritage with a stellar Landmark facility on Western Avenue, which was used as a site for a Hollywood movie. The brick and flagstone- front facility had banquet rooms and a huge lower level facility, called the Rathskellar with another banquet room, a kitchen, a huge bar and offices.

It becomes my preferred option because it is located near an area that I frequent; plus, hours open on the weekend work best for me, which is late afternoon. Located along a busy Cermak Rd, the parking space is easily accessible to visiting customers, but you must choose the right time when backing out your vehicle to exit amongst incoming traffic. Now if you struggle finding parking along Cermak Rd, there is also 2-hr parking on Clarence Ave which sits off to the side of the location. An adorable, classy looking building is this post office not only on the outside, but inside as well. During my visit, there was a small line of customers inside which resulted in a short wait, but nothing excruciating. As someone who visits post office locations regularly whether it be for Poshmark, eBay, or postcard shipments the clerk presented a professional demeanor during our brief encounter. I was on my way in minutes after being presented with mailing stamps for my postcards, a receipt, and a short briefing about the survey listed on the bottom of the receipt which allows you to share your experience. I am terrible at doing the surveys on the receipts pertaining to my visits at post offices, but rest assured I always share a review based on my experiences whether it be yelp or Google. I had a good experience and would gladly utilize this United States Post Office in Berwyn again for any shipments I may have. ~Keep it simple. ~ Thomas G
