A local librarian told me I had to visit the historic post office in town, and I'm glad I did. The…read morebrick building was built in 1935, constructed with New Deal funds, and is still mostly in original state. It's like taking a step back in time. A mural by Alan Tompkins entitled "Arrival of the Mail" is the first thing I noticed. The 1937 mural depicts people excited and anxiously awaiting the distribution of mail at a time before postal delivery. The mural was commissioned by President Roosevelt to support artists. Tompkins was an art instructor at Herron in Indianapolis. He lived to 100 and painted prolifically during his career. The mural has water damage and was restored by A. Raemaekers in 1974. The post office's lovely oak trim and brass postal boxes are original. Framed local postal history and a heartwarming story of "Tiger, the postal dog" hang above the post boxes. Photos of the building's construction hang on the wall. An addition to the facility was added in 1974 to the south side of the building. Today, the building is part of the Martinsville Historic District. The building is accessible, a ramp has been added. There is limited parking in front. If you're in Martinsville, a visit is recommended.

This was my first time visiting the Morgan County Courthouse. Specifically I did my business with…read morethe Clerk of Courts which is still in this building and not the new building with the new courtrooms. The staff was super friendly in the Clerk's office. They helped us understand the petition we were filing and all the next steps involved. They also helped us understand a question we had about one of the options on the petition. The officers at the entrance were very helpful with access since I am temporarily in a wheelchair this summer. They said it is still unknown if the Clerk of Courts office will stay in the courthouse or move to the new building.

The original structure was designed by Isaac Hodgson, an Irish born architect who designed four courthouses in Indiana. The Morgan County Courthouse, started in 1857 and completed 1859, was the first courthouse he designed in the state. The courthouse sits on a central square in the city of Martinsville. Additions that maintained the original Italianate style were added 1895, 1912, 1934, 1956 and in 1970s. Currently, a new judicial building is under construction a block away from the courthouse. After the new building opens, the historical courthouse will enjoy another renovation. The sheriff's staff is super friendly, and indicated very little original interior exists. Modern updates brought plumbing, electricity, phones, heating, air conditioning and electronics to this historic structure. It is difficult to find any evidence of the original courthouse on the inside. Courtrooms and offices have been updated with electronics and furniture. There was no info on history within the building, which was disappointing. But it is a working courthouse. Outside, a Civil war era canon points west, protecting the building from Illinois. On the west side of the building, sits the original sheriff's home. There is free parking around the square. The building is wheelchair accessible.

This is a nice memorial that is located at the entrance of Sugar Creek Township Park. It is made…read morepossible by hard work of members of American Legion Post 182. It was dedicated in 2018, after years of planning. Parking here is easy, since it is located in a park with a decent sized private parking lot. The memorial is respectfully and tastefully done. At the entrance to the memorial, you will find a black marble slab with the memorial's sponsors on one side and the logos of the American Legion, above the logos of all 6 branches of service. Below all of that, on the slab's base, you will find the date the memorial was dedicated. Next to that is a sign to remind visitors to be respectful of the memorial. Which is sad that they have to do that, but I understand. Hopefully people will heed the sign. The memorial features bike racks with the logo of each respective branch of service, a walkway with pavers that are dedicated to veterans by family and friends. There is also 3 flag poles, with the center and tallest one flying the American flag, the one to its left flying the Indiana State Flag, and the one to its right flying the POW/MIA Flag. There is a nice pergola that serves as the flags' backdrop and there are two small cannons between the three flags. The memorial is in a circle/semi-circle formation. In the center is a 6 to 7 foot obelisk with inscriptions on the base of it. Words such as "INTEGRITY", "HONOR", "DUTY" and "SERVICE" and inscribed in the cement slab on the ground that leads to the obelisk from each of its 4 sides. On the outside perimeter around the obelisk. You will find black marble slabs with the logo of each respective branch of service inscribed in them. A little further past circle is a circular paved walkway and then some marble benches that were dedicated to veterans by their family and/or friends. Is it the best Veteran Memorial that I seen? No, but i am a sucker for honoring our veterans. It is a small but nice memorial and honors the County's local heroes in a fitting way. It was a team effort and took hard work from many volunteers to make this dream a reality. I understand that you would not travel to see this memorial, but it is worth a visit if you are in the area.

if you traveled down to nashville, indiana through morgantown, you've probably passed by this…read morefamous ginkgo tree. the ginkgo tree in morgantown has a notable and touching history dating back to the civil war. the tree was planted by a former pow from the civil war, ruben c. griffith. according to griffith, he watched a tiny ginkgo tree grow through a crack outside his prison. he found inspiration in the tree. after his release, he returned home and became a prominent physician. he planted a ginkgo tree outside the home he built in 1894, where the tree has thrived for over 100 years. the tree was placed on the national registry in 2006. a plaque stands next to the inspirational tree. the plaque reads: the legend of the ghinko tree ruben c. griffith was born in a log cabin on this lot in 1845. at the age of 17 he enlisted with the union army only to be captured one year later and incarcerated in the legendary andersonville prison in georgia. from his small prison window he watched a tiny tree grow out of a dry crack in the earth. it gave him hope that he too might survive. having seen the dire need for physicians during the war, upon his release he returned home and became a prominent morganton physician. in 1894 he tore down the family cabin & built this house to use as his residence & office. in 1908, the governor of indiana commissioned him to return to andersonville to erect a memorial for the 630 indiana soldiers who died at andersonville. upon his return he carried with him a ghinko sapling which he planted in this spot. unfortunately in 1910 while observing fireworks from an upstairs window dr griffith fell to his death. this house and tree was added to the national registry in 2006. i can't help but love these small town stories that give insights into our history. the tree is inspirational and maybe the best reason to visit morgantown. there is free street parking near the tree.

The food was great, the people were fabulous, the fireworks at the end of the night by the ball diamonds were outstanding. I will definitely go back next year.
