A local librarian told me I had to visit the historic post office in town, and I'm glad I did. The…read morebrick building was built in 1935, constructed with New Deal funds, and is still mostly in original state. It's like taking a step back in time. A mural by Alan Tompkins entitled "Arrival of the Mail" is the first thing I noticed. The 1937 mural depicts people excited and anxiously awaiting the distribution of mail at a time before postal delivery. The mural was commissioned by President Roosevelt to support artists. Tompkins was an art instructor at Herron in Indianapolis. He lived to 100 and painted prolifically during his career. The mural has water damage and was restored by A. Raemaekers in 1974. The post office's lovely oak trim and brass postal boxes are original. Framed local postal history and a heartwarming story of "Tiger, the postal dog" hang above the post boxes. Photos of the building's construction hang on the wall. An addition to the facility was added in 1974 to the south side of the building. Today, the building is part of the Martinsville Historic District. The building is accessible, a ramp has been added. There is limited parking in front. If you're in Martinsville, a visit is recommended.

Lots of seat, but also a TON of stations (11 total, I think) and the line moves FAST. I've been here twice in the last few months, and the wait is never as long as it seems to be. They now have a "take a number" method, and then you sit in and open area. They go through the numbers quickly, which is beneficial for those sitting and waiting, however they only give each number called about 3 seconds before moving onto the next. This causes some confusion for families who's native language is not English, or those who go to the vestibule to wait and get other things done. It causes some friction when a number is skipped and then they return. Overall, I got my plates handled quickly and the employee who worked with me had patience as I fumbled through my paperwork. Overall I'm impressed with how their efficiency has improved.

Thank goodness it was a gorgeous day. Once inside an employee asked what we were in for and checked the title for my son and told me to have a seat. The title wasn't completed correctly by the seller so we have a return trip to the closest BMV. I waited less than 5 minutes to see the next clerk. She was super friendly, efficient and had my registration completed quickly. This was a safe environment with mask, social distancing and limited number of guests allowed at a time. Efficient and friendly staff made the trip pleasant.

I drive to the Plainfield one and they have me in and out with new plates and registration in under 3 minutes. Learn the rules management. Who power trips over a license plate?

Thankfully, I learned that this location accepts walk-ins for passport services. I called ahead to confirm, and I'm really glad I did. They don't offer photo services like the post office, so I had to make an extra stop to get photos taken. I had also already prepaid for a money order on the processing fee, but it turned out they accept credit/debit cards or cash for that portion of the cost ($35), so I ended up paying that way instead (since my money order was too much ($50) because of the extra photo service charge I had opted for originally with the post office). The payment to the U.S. department of state ($130) still had to be money order/cashiers check or a check which I had a money order for that. The building itself is beautiful, very historic with a old-timey vibe. I enjoyed sightseeing around the building, checking out all the landmarks. When we arrived, the security guard at the front was helpful and guided us to the correct area. The staff member who assisted us was also very friendly, which made the process smooth. Parking was free and available around the building, which made things even easier. When I called ahead, they also let me know which entrance to use since some were closed, and that was really helpful. I'm so grateful this option was available the same day. It was convenient, easy to access, and the service was great, plus, the building itself was a nice bonus to see.

The Johnson County Courthouse stands on a prominent square in Franklin. The Courthouse, designed by…read morearchitect George W. Buenting, was completed in 1881 and is a mixture of Italianate and other styles. The courthouse is the 4th dedicated structure for Johnson County. (Two previous courthouses were destroyed by fire.) The exterior of the building is a combination of brick and limestone. A central clock tower with working bell is prominent. Several war memorials stand in the courtyard including a bronze Civil War sculpture by John Vawter. Inside, marble floors, curved stairways, carved woodwork and other woodwork captured my attention. A central atrium with a beautiful lit ceiling is the centerpiece of the building. The building is pristine with the most recent renovation completed in 1983. The security guard was friendly and directed me to the clerk's office for information. There are several courtrooms in the building. The Superior Court was close to original 1881 condition with folding seating made of wrought iron and oak. Other courtrooms had been modernized. Free parking surrounds the Courthouse square. The building is fully accessible. The Courthouse is worth a visit if you are interested in architecture and history.

At first glance, I thought the modern building was a museum with a beautiful entrance and domed courtyard. But it is the county jail. Because this is a detention center, only visitors that are visiting inmates are allowed inside. Architect buffs must enjoy from the exterior only. If I go to jail, this is where I want to be.
