I am retired, almost always home, but when a signature is required for a United States Postal Service package, I never get a buzz to my apartment bell--just a slip saying they didn't find me in. No way to call the Red Hook branch (as noted by others--a nightmare to try--impossible), and it is a 25 minute walk away. They don't even leave a second notice--they just return the package to sender. This happened to me with two packages this past month. Situation has been so bad for so long that I just got a PO box locally--just to avoid this total disfunction and my inability to communicate with this post office by phone. I'm not sure why this Post Office has such little ratings, but park in was pretty easy karma the employees were nice and I was in-and-out relatively fast. It was clean and well stocked with USPS products. It's a smaller older station and it looks like they have PO boxes available to rent. Their social distancing measures set up in the space and everyone was pretty courteous while waiting. If I'm in the neighborhood or going to ikea, this is a great post office to get stuff done. read more

At first I was really upset with this post office for not redelivering my package and yes I must say I did put in a complaint. When my package still was delivered I took my behind up there I had to prep myself before walking in (I always have bad experience at post offices) when I walked in I was greeted by a young man he took my information and he looked thoroughly for my package when he couldn't find it he went and got his supervisor. When she came out she was just as pleasant she went above and beyond to contact the drivers she even took down my number and made sure my package was delivered the next day. By far, the worst USPS location and service----ever. As long as I can remember, going back years--- their phone number was and still is non-functional. It'll ring once and go busy. You would most likely win lotto before connecting with anyone. It just doesn't work. A parcel was delivered to my address a couple days ago, but I wasnt home to receive it. A postcard was left in the mailbox to schedule redelivery, but 3 days later and I've been unsuccessful. Here's why: *As mentioned the number doesn't connect *The USPS toll free number indicates a one hour or more wait time to speak with a rep *The USPS online website doesn't recognize the tracking number given on the postcard. So my parcel sits there, unless I physically pick it up. Super frustrating, annoying and a basic nightmare. read more

This location is great. During the Pandemic they did an excellent job delivering specially with the increased online shopping because of the contactless situation they still handled the best they could I never lost a package. All the staff are very helpful. read more

SENDERS BEWARE!! Let me first begin by saying that I deeply value the work of people in the Postal Service and have always been friendly with my neighborhood post person. This is not at all a reflection of those serving in this role, this is however a direct review of the manager and business "practices" of the Redhook station. Go here if you want your package to be randomly lost and for no one to care. I have a small business that operates out of Gowanus Brooklyn and send packages frequently. We always use stamps.com for prepaid postage and either have a USPS person pick it up from my office or occasionally will drop it off at the Redhook location. One morning like any other package drop off- my husband took three packages of mine to be scanned in and delivered with no problem except the gentleman who took the packages from my husband DID NOT SCAN ONE OF THEM. The "Manager" D*rien W*ng is clearly trained in "redundant calm talk" instead of getting results, follow through or accountability from his staff. The drop off is on surveillance and the clerk could be identified by my husband and yet this "manager" hadn't even gone to the source (the clerk) to inquire directly as to why the package had never been scanned. It's a whole lot of "it's just lost" and that's about it. Never mind, the value of my package was 2200.00. I filed an insurance claim and hopefully I recover a fraction of my loss- however it still doesn't make up for the fact that there is blatant disregard to the well-being of packages when we trust the USPS to do their job honorably. read more

Made an appointment to apply for a passport. People made appointments starting from 10am, but agent was in a "meeting". What's the point of making appointments if it's going to be over one hour and half late. We all have things to do, but instead we have to wait the agent while she is in a "meeting". That's not bad service at the USPS, it's lack of consideration. What's so important that she had to be in a meeting for over an hour during business hours? I think I've never seen any USPS with decent reviews. I wish there were other places where we could apply for passports and not rely on USPS since the agent schedules internal meetings during business hours. In the end, I had to leave the appointment because I was going to be late for work. What's the point of making an appointment if the agent does whatever she wants with her time such as scheduling meetings and doesn't care about people who made an appointment and have other things to do. It's time for a very positive review for Red Hook USPS. Let's hear it for Matthew, he is awesome, just the best and delivers when others can't. My package was missing for a few days and Franklin, our carrier, (another positive and polite postman from this office) directed me to Matthew. After persistent efforts he cheerfully found my package. I went to side of Post Office where Matthew came out immediately with a big smile on his face and handed me my lost package. It was his attitude that made all of the difference. We miss you Allen thanks for your years of service in the 2nd Pl hood. Franklin is doing a good job of continuing your long time good reputation. Don't listen to the new reviews this place still sucks. Nothing like being in line with 3 other people waiting over an hour for our passports. Apparently the clerk went on lunch after seeing the size of the line. Why have us schedule appointments if you're not here? Seems super entitled how me and others were treated. I hate this place. hate. hate. hate. I ordered an item online. It arrived at their post office within 3 days. it's 16 days AFTER that, and I have YET to receive my package. I've been tracking it online, where it repeatedly says that a notice was left (nope) or that there needs to be 1-2 additional days for delivery because it "just arrived" (nope.) Beyond that, I've called twice, and scheduled redelivery online three times. Yesterday, I called again. The man was nice, swore up and down he'd get me my package, and within 30min the delivery truck was RIGHT OUT SIDE! I ran downstairs, over-joyed to finally receive my $170 boots (which, by the way, I bought for $40... I knew there had to be a catch) Well, the truck drove away. Did. Not. Deliver. The. Package. Thatwasrightonthedamntruck! Oh, sure, I could walk the mile and a half to pick it up. But I ordered it ONLINE! If I wanted to pick it up, I would've gone to the damn store. Redhook Post office, where you send your packages to die. I'm helping a friend move out of NY and the closest post office was this one. We decided to ship a few things back that were going to take up too much space in the car. So we packaged up 2 boxes of dirty laundry and took it to this post office to ship. Mistake 1. Going to this post office. Yes, NYC is a dirty and perhaps even filthy place, but the Redhook Postal office defies the word filth and takes it to a whole new level. Take a shower after you leave. Mistake 2. The dirty behind-the-counter/bullet-resistant glass guy, who I could smell through window, did not like my handwriting. I went to the end of the line, and we corrected my handwriting. Mistake 3. We used a return address that was not NYC. That threw a glitch in the smelly, stained postal worker's brain. He threw a fit for about 2 minutes while the line of Brooklynites grew weary enough to riot. Mistake 4. Assuming any of the 2 packages would ever arrive in one piece/on time. 1 package arrived in about a week, 1 arrived in a trash bag with the box torn in half. The dirty clothes we shipped were even more dirty like some one had backed a truck leaking oil over them 20 dozen times. To top this all of the underwear mysteriously missing (bras and panties). Somewhere in the back of the Redhook postal office there is probably a pile of dirty panties that some worker is hiding and sniffing while he rifles through your packages with his filthy hands. read more

There are NO redeeming qualities to this post office. It's the worst post office I've ever been to. Every time I've ever been here there has been a huge line and usually one or two people fighting with the workers for messing something up. The place is dirty, understaffed, unorganized, and the people aren't friendly, helpful, or speedy in the slightest. Unfortunately if you live in Red Hook or the Columbia Waterfront District this is the only post office and you have no choice but to use this location for certain things like picking up packages. In addition to the actual Post Office the mail carriers based here are also pretty horrible. My building has 4 apartments/mail boxes, my mail box happens to be the best labeled and the newest and instead of trying to figure out were all the mail goes I often get the neighbors mail (usually at least once a week). UPDATE: Here was today's Red Hook USPS experience....I showed up to the Post Office around 9am when they opened (on Wednesday December 23rd) and got in line behind 7 other people. Being the week of Christmas the line soon grew to about 25 people and being the Red Hook station they only had one person working. Everyone in front of me had standard simple requests but for some reason it took nearly half an hour until I got my turn. My package was scanned at this post office on Dec 16th, the USPS website said that a delivery attempt was made though I never received a delivery attempt slip which they're suppose to leave. I gave the guy the tracking number and after a couple minutes he let me know that the package was sent to a New Jersey post office and couldn't tell me why, he told me if I wanted to track the package I could go online. It's just this kind of bullshit that the Red Hook Post Office is constantly capable of and deliver on quite frequently. read more

I've had better experiences picking my towed car up from the Brooklyn Navy yard impound. Imagine the DMV in the 1970's in a foreign country. These people don't care about your parcels, or you, or the fact that the line looks like the one outside of the Riverfront Coliseum on December 3rd, 1979 when The Who were about to "go on stage". Also services generally come action-packed with a snippy insult and a "What are you gonna do about it" sentiment. I never leave bad Yelp reviews either. read more

A nice "tough love" kinda place if you like surly civil servants. Calling them can be just as daunting as an in-person visit. Recently I had to call them to find out what happened to a package that the postal folks didn't feel like delivering. I was repeatedly told that "it was on the truck", irregardless that the usps website reported that they couldn't attempt delivery for two days and notices were left (which were probably written with invisible ink on magic disappearing paper). To paraphrase the old Lily Tomlin/Ernestine joke: "they just don't CARE, they don't have to, they're the Post Office." read more

This is one of the best Post Offices I've dealt with. The Postal workers here are almost always pleasant and professional and often highly efficient and competent. My one gripe is that I wish they had an APC machine. Or at least a giant door/slot for receiving large Priority and Express Mail packages without having to stand in line. Though that isn't that big of a problem because the line is usually around 3 or 4 people and it moves fairly quickly. Still, I think Red Hook deserves an APC machine. Maybe a tiny Auto-post office on Van Brunt like the one DUMBO has on Front Street. That would be awesome. read more

Worst post office ever. They are rude and disrespectful. They damage your mail. They get it wet, bend it, or deliver it at 7pm. But they ALSO *steal* it. Neighbors continually report that UPS and FedEx packages are delivered, but USPS...? *poof*!! Never to be seen. Check the tracking # and it will tell you "delivered." Alas, that is a lie. No package. Go ahead and call them. Ahahahahaha. One supervisor will transfer you to another, who will tell you to call back at 3, who will tell you to call the Kentucky service number, who will say they will investigate, who never do, who you call again, and again, and eventually who tell you that it was delivered.... *because the web site "says soooo"!!* read more

If you can avoid this USPS location, please, for the love of the lady ahead of me in the queue who loves Jesus but is afraid of the vampires of New Orleans, avoid this place. It is the worst. I don't need to explain why. Okay, let me explain why. We have different socioeconomic strata in New York City. This Post Office is located across the street from one of the the poorest demographics in the area. Top-notch, motivated, enthusiastic USPS workers do not get placed here. How rude are the staff? Very. The staff will engage in casual banter while "doing your customs form" on the screen, while *looking away* from said screen. The staff will make faces at you. The staff hate you. They hate you almost as much as they hate the clock at 9:00 a.m. The clientele, on the other hand, can be colorful. Once, while picking up a package, a lady ahead of me in the queue was on her cellphone talking loudly about vampires, and how "we need to ask Jesus to protect us because we believe in Jesus, and so our blood is very sweet, and vampires like sweet blood." And that she felt sorry for people in New Orleans "because they deal with vampires every single day. God help me from New Orleans. My blood is sweet. I don't want to fokin vampires to drink my sweet blood." I truly wish I was making this up. But this is what you get at this location, on the client side. So, Jesus-loving, vampire-fearing, four-letter-word-swearing friends, this place is for you. Everyone else in the area -- visit the "Van Brunt" US Post Office on 5th Avenue and 9th Street instead if you need simple things like a money order, a Priority envelope, the client-side FAN turned on inside when it is 92 degrees Fahrenheit outside, or USPS staffers who care, which this location never seems to offer. read more

My watch is extremely accurate, trust me. I got the most accurate watch around. USPS: I ain't cuttin' it off early. And my watch ain't wrong. You need to get in and outta here and stop harassin' me. Get your mail and get outta here. PRIC: You need to do your job. That's all you need to do. Let people in, and let them out. Just do your job. [retrieves his mail] Do your job. I just had to reorder a shipment from Amazon due to the fact that this post office provided the wrong tracking number and incorrectly tried to schedule a redelivery. So based on my experience you'll be lucky if theres even one capable person staffed at the counter working at an unbelievably slow pace you'd wonder what they were doing. Do not ship anything USPS to NYC 10002.... they will lose your package and claim it was delivered. Second, even if you put your mail on hold they will deliver your package and mail. Only one word expresses this post office... incompetence. Admittedly -- I cringe at the thought of going to ANY post office - but this has got to be one of the worst I've ever dealt with. Avoid at all costs. The clerks are completely unprofessional and have absolutely ZERO customer service orientation. If you DO decide to use this post office- be sure to bring your own pen to complete forms like delivery confirmation, certified mail, or even to address your letters. There are none provided - and if you DARE ask to borrow one from the clerk you will be informed that you are supposed to bring your own. And don't bother pointing out that most other post offices provide them (you know -- tied to a little chain...) because you will be informed that those post offices only provide them as a COURTESY... I'm surprised the clerk even knew the meaning of that word. I also echo other reviewers who have complained of missing packages; all of my Christmas gifts were stolen last year and it was a NIGHTMARE trying to recover any value from the insurance that was purchased on them. I REALLY wish UPS would just take over all shipping in the US... sigh... read more

Made an appointment to get a passport at this location on line and got a confirmation number. Showed up and was told that their passport person wasn't going to be here all week. Said someone called and left me a message today, which of course I hadn't gotten before my appointment. Asked if I could at least have my passport photo taken and they said they couldn't do it (even though this location is supposed to do passport photos also). read more

Copy this 718 direct phone number! (It's now rarely seen in listings.) Use it! I just called and asked for package re-delivery, and the guy answering the 718 number was helpful and polite. The 800-ASK-USPS line is ignored, so don't use it unless you like listening to an endless, unanswered ring. NEVER, EVER, use the online redelivery request system -- it too is ignored, and worse, gives you no way to track the progress, if any, of your request. Carroll Gardens desperately needs its own P.O., but I think the workers here do their best given the ridiculous situation. read more

The staff--after a decade I'm up-voting--makes all the difference. The place itself remains a 1970's Horror B-movie setting. Any money allocated for upkeep must have been spent on the lock-box setup out front. HORRIBLE! Zero star. Are they doing it on purpose??? Repeatedly, this post office claimed they tried to deliver parcels. On the first "trial" they do not leave any notification, but I expected it to be redelivered next day or two. Many days pass and I decide to go online to schedule a redelivery... many days pass, I finally get in contact with a person who just goes like "oops"... only after that I get my parcels. HOLY CRAP. This is the WORST Post Office I think I've ever been to. On a Friday afternoon around 2PM there was only 2 associates working the regular windows - one was processing a passport application the other was a total creep trying to get the girls number who was at the window. Everyone in line was listening to the two of them carry on with their creepy conversation. I understand a passport application may take a while, but when you have a line of people MOVE IT ALONG!! What's with all the small talk and conversation??! Once it was my turn, the male associate working asked me what my money orders were for, how much money I had in my account to pay for them, if my card had a limit, why I wasn't living with a man etc. He even made some sort of racial remark saying women outside of his race like to take care of lazy men. WTF? On top of that, he was SOOOOO slow...I was at the counter for almost a half hour. This location looks super sketchy...the windows are so thick and you can barely hear the associate through them. When you have to swipe your card, you need to wait until they close the window next to them, so that you can open the window next to you. Weird. It must be a dangerous location. Never coming back here again. read more

Since I made an address change, I haven't received even one mail from an old address. It's been a month since I moved. They say it's taking more time that mails will be forwarded to the new address. It's been a month. They said also, if I tell everyone my new address, you don't miss a mail. I lost my word. I tried to reach them by phone, but they never take a phone call. The absolute worst . They were supposed to deliver my package and claimed there was no entry way and the drive thru was blocked mind you I do not have a drive thru . Then a few days later I try and go pickup my package that was supposed to go out the next day , the package is missing they can not find it in the office and it is not updated in the system so they assume it's with my regular mail lady , it was never delivered and claimed a blocked drive way . She claimed to have been there 6:08 when I was outside at my mailbox at the same time she never showed up . The manager refused to come out an explain to me why his employees simply refuse to properly update the system , so I guess my package is missing , it's been about 3 days . Ruined my birthday and I feel like I received little to no help. read more
