Loved my experience here with Kip and Ted as my instructors. I really wanted to be a confident rider and the schools format and their teaching style was not only really fun but really effective in giving me the confidence to keep practicing to become an expert rider. Incomplete Certificate! They mailed me a certificate that did not have my address, motorcycle training completion date, or the issue date. I had made an appointment at the DMV, which meant I only had to wait 2 hours before they rejected the certificate. So now I have to get a duplicate certificate, which means I had to fill out a form, scan my driver's license and the original certificate and email all these documents. Once I receive the duplicate certificate, I have to take it to the DMV again. Now the appointments are in December, so without an appointment I have to waste another 4/5 hours at the DMV. These people have wasted 5/6 hours of my time. How difficult is it to complete a simple form? The class itself is also a waste of time. You spend 16 hours there, but the actual training on a motorcycle is probably less than 30 minutes. 8 hours is spent going over a safety booklet that you can read on your own in 30 minutes. In fact they ask you to read it before the class, which makes the class really boring. The training is full of breaks and waiting around, and then you do an exercise but only twice or maybe 3 times. So by the time you figure out what you're doing, you're on to the next exercise. This whole class is a total waste of time. Read the DMV booklet. Download an app and study for a bit. Take the written test, which is very easy. Just fyi you also have to study and take the vehicle test. Then you get your permit, which is good for a year. Just be cautious and practice on your own for couple of months. Then take the DMV skills test, which is actually not difficult. And skip this course or waste your time. read more

I went oversees to Thailand and was inspired by all the mopeds and decided to sell my SUV and buy a scooter as my daily commuter. Although I have an automatic scooter, because I had never ridden a bike of any sorts I decided for safety purpose it would be good for me to take this class. Being that I'm only 4'10, 87lbs, I felt more comfortable that I was able to use my own scooter. Although the class is a kindergarten riding course I still learned a lot and helped with my confidence level. I have a 125cc scooter which isn't freeway legal but top speed of 70mph so now I'm a lot more confident splitting lanes in traffic. The classes are long and takes up your entire weekend. Not everyone will pass. It does move quickly, as there's so much that needs to be covered in the short amount of time. One lady was let go on the first day of riding because she wasn't advancing fast enough with the group. But the cool part is, they'll let you retake the course all over as a stand by, if this happens to you. The written exam was super easy and everyone passed it. A couple people from my group of 6, opted out on taking the riding course because they felt they weren't ready. If you opt out of taking the riding test, you're allowed to re-take the riding portion of the class as a stand by (if room is available). If you've never driven a stick shift or have any type of riding background, you'll probably struggle. I suggest watching a lot of YouTube videos for beginner riders so that when you do take the class, you're able to somewhat keep up. The riding test wasn't hard as it covers the things you practice. But because it's a "test" I was super nervous and didn't do as well as I did when we were just practicing. There were 4 things that were covered on the riding test. 1. Maneuvering/ weaving through the cones. 2. being able to swerve out of harms way. 3. Taking a sharp turn then a regular turn (mainly focusing on making sure your head is looking into the direction of where you want to go. 4. Fast break . Going about 15-20 mph then coming to an immediate stop. & you need to stop within 20 seconds. It's a point system. Everyone who took the riding course passed that day. & if you don't, you're allowed to come back and re-take it one more tome. If you're a true beginner rider, this class should definitely be taken. If you don't pass, & really want to ride, keep practicing. But like I said, this is basic, kindergarten course. If you don't pass, I wouldn't want you riding a motorcycle on the street just yet. Don't get discourage, keep practicing in backroads, parking lot until you can at least cover these basics and pass. Just a side note, they do have gears you can borrow but very limited. Especially for shoes and gloves. If you're a tiny person like me, you'll need to bring your own shoes and gloves. All their gloves are xl, and make sure the palm part is leather. read more

Kip and Ted are excellent instructors , and this class is a must for new riders. Ted and Mark were great - they keep things pretty light and engaging, but get serious when needed and all of their feedback was actionable and helpful. Would recommend for new riders or people just getting back into riding and looking to relearn the fundamentals in a safe and educational environment. Bonus that you can waive the DMV riding test with successful completion of this course. read more

You want to learn how to ride. These instructors are not just great but informative and entertaining. J.J, Kip, and Ted all did a fantastic job. I was recommended to this spot by a friend of mine, so I showed up, listened, made new friends in the process and had a good time. The reason why they have 4 stars instead of 5 is beyond me. My only conclusion for those giving a poor rating is due to ego and pride. 1. Listen and retain simple instructions you will be just fine. 2. Listen and follow directions you will be just fine. The instructors are all seasoned riders who ride beautifully but also want you to succeed. They will applaud you for doing something correctly. They will correct you for doing something not right. They will tease you for flaws most of us new riders have. But they will be nothing but pleasant and caring. If you mess up they will always make sure you are OK first. And than tell you what you did wrong (after asking "are you sure you're ok" at least 10 times). They will also encourage you to come back. Because that is their job! The more practice a rider has the more SAFE a rider is. Easy sign up, easy process, great instructors, and one learns a lot. I will recommended this place to anybody wanting to ride. THANKS J.J, Kip, and Ted you guys were great! read more

Excellent program. I entered with no riding experience and left feeling very confident about beginning my journey with motorcycles. The riding coaches were excellent and very informative. In fact, it makes me flinch thinking about how many people out there are being trained right now by family. THIS is THE way to get your motorcycle license. Complete the program and they mail you a waiver to bypass the DMV riding portion of the test. All you need to do after this is take the written. They provide all the gear you need. MAKE SURE TO SHOW UP EARLY! If you're even a few seconds late you could be kicked out of class! The classroom session was informative. The two riding sessions were really fun AND teach you how to ride. Period. read more

URide Motorcycle Training - Thanks to kip , JJ and Greg you guys fucking rock ! - Driving Schools Near Me - Costa Mesa, California

Hey! First off Greg, who does the classroom instruction, is the owner of the school. He doesn't mention that. Hey! he teaches the classroom portion and uses Yogi Berra quotes constantly to keep the class engaged. He also begins every sentence with...wait for it...Hey!. I'll qualify my review by saying that I DID NOT pass the riding portion of the course. In fact, I fell pretty hard during one of the exercises. I wasn't injured except for a gnarly scrape on my right elbow. It's obvious that people dump the bikes on a regular basis considering the condition of the bikes (they're all pretty beat up), as well as the number of replacement parts they keep on hand. Having said that, it might be a good idea to also keep a decent first aide kit onsite as well. Kip gave me some Neosporin that expired in 2013. Not that it's their fault, but I did get a pretty bad infection, probably from the pieces of asphalt in the wound. So about the riding portion...I've never ridden a bike before. Just as I was getting comfortable with an exercise, they end it and move on. I remember being pretty anxious the entire time. Positive reinforcement is apparently off limits. Instead, you only hear from them when you are not doing something correctly. JJ and Kip: Please stay off your cell phone when people are riding...not cool. If you are new to riding, take the course, but don't expect to pass because they really rush through the exercises and a lot of people do not pass their first time. You'll get these extremely under powered bikes into 3rd gear if your lucky, but definitely won't get over 20 MPH since the area is very limited. Regardless of my fall, I had a so-so experience. My advice is this...spend the $, don't have any expectations, get a bike but practice, practice, practice get your permit (which allows you to ride just not at night, with passengers, or on the freeway) then take the test at the DMV which from what I've seen is easier anyway. This was my experience, coming from a car driver that has NEVER had an accident or ticket and who is in excellent physical shape (that has nothing to do with anything, but I've got a big ego) read more

I'm 5'0 in height and I'm super petite, so I was kinda nervous to take this class because I was scared I wouldn't fit any bike. BUT the class has motorcycles for short people! So if you're short and feel intimated, don't be. This was my first time riding, let alone touching a motorcycle. I got my permit, so I wanted to take this class to get my license since I'm already 21. Anyway, I'm very new to the bikes, but my instructors were amazing! they taught me the basics on how to get on, hold the bike up, start it, and ride. For those of you who are new to the scene, I understand how nervous you might be, but don't worry, the instructors will guide you to success. The course itself is broken up into two type of class session. the first class is indoors where one of the instructors will teach you the basics: hand signs, how to check for traffic, what gears to wear when you ride, etc. The second class is the riding course; here you will learn the basics of riding: how to properly gear up, start the bike, ride the bike, turn, u-turn, quick-stop, etc. If you have any questions, ask them. They'll help you perfect your riding by telling you what you're doing wrong. To be honest, I dropped the bike once, so one of the instructors told me what I did wrong and than I learned from it and perfected it. For someone who is new at riding, I was able to pass this class and get my license. There are two retakes, so if you fail the first one, don't stress about it because you can take it again. There is a quick test in class about what you learn (it's pretty easy cause it's practically common sense...). Call to book a class and to pay for the course. read more

Not sure how this company has any ratings over 1 star, maybe new employees/owners recently? I used Yelp when looking to sign up for my motorcycle lessons, I thought this was a slam dunk with all of the great reviews. When I took the in-class portion, the instructor was very nice and helpful, until I arrived at the actual riding lessons.... the Instructors attitude was horrible and it's to the point of a no-win situation, I felt like he had something against me personally and was very uncomfortable around him. I would not recommend this company to anyone and will be taking further action against this company and how I was treated. read more

I have to give props to every single instructor who helped me through the course. I have been a dirt rider, but I am just now beginning to ride street and I think taking this course is absolutely necessary to anyone even if they have been riding forever like me. You will learn new techniques and how to establish proper habits in riding. HOWEVER If you have never touched a bike before or have rarely ever ridden and this would be the first time on a bike, don't expect it to be easy. I don't think the course was rushed in any way, but a total of 8ish hours on a bike to be able to qualify for a license seems a little quick. There is a 40% failure rate and these are usually with people who are brand new to bikes. Don't let this scare you. They offer you the chance to stand by and take the riding training over at a later date in case you don't feel comfortable taking the exam. I think this course is well deserving of five stars and I think it is by far better than just trying the course at the DMV. read more

I barely give reviews on Yelp, but this course is so good for riders at any level that I have to come back here and give them 5 stars. I consider myself an advanced motorcyclist (with more than 6 years riding in Viet Nam), but I still learned a lot spending my time on the road with Uride Instructors, especially on my confidence. My best part is riding day 2, when it's all about riding and having fun with other students. Completed the course on Sunday and got my certificate on Tuesday. Not bad!!! Many thanks to JJ, Kip, and an Instructor with a good mustache but I forgot his name Semper Fi read more

Awesome experience. The classroom and bike time was awesome. I have had my permit for 2 years but I still learned a ton and got real comfortable maneuvering the bike. Greg taught the classroom. Cool guy. Kip and JJ taught the motorcycle course portions. They were awesome. I would recommend that you know the basics of operating a clutch and starting a bike. It was hard for a girl to do anything after the first hour of the day because she had never operated a clutch before. But they still let her come back to try another day. The written test was not hard if you have common sense and pay attention. The manipulative test was a little tricky, but you practice all those skills before the test, So it was okay. I would definitely recommend U ride!! read more

The course is unsafe for new riders. The bikes are old , the brakes grind and squeak. They allow you to ride in the rain without any training for unsafe conditions. They need to repaint the lines and not yell at students when we can't see the lines when the grounds are wet and standing water everywhere. Please do not take this course the grounds are unsafe as well as the motorcycles. Thank you read more

Had zero riding experience on motorcycle. Took the class to hopefully learn more about the concept of riding and if you pass the whole course you can waive the DMV which is also nice. There was two part to the course. 1. Basic lecture on correct way to ride a motorcycle. Keep in mind there is a final exam at the end of the final day. Very straight forward question. All of our classmate pass no problem. 2. Motorcycle hands on skill test. Will be graded on pass or fail base on how many strikes you get at the end of the final day of skill test. Our instructor for lectures was Greg. Super funny fella. Make class interesting to learn. As for the hands on skill test we had JJ and Kip to instruct us on our practice. Both very down to earth instructors. Kip has over 40 years of riding so can't go wrong with that! The man a chief!! He has amazing stories !! Again had zero zero!! Riding experience. Learned a lot and really enjoy being able to see yourself get better and better as the days goes on. Looking to get a bike one day and this was a great start to something great. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who want to start on the basic knowledge of riding. Make sure your on time or else you will be dismissed from class. Motorcycle riding is dangerous so starting this class is a start to the right direction. We all gotta start somewhere. read more

Took this class once in 2006 and passed but took it to just learn to ride, not get my license, so I never went to DMV. Just took it again this week, this time to get my M1 motorcycle license, and passed again. Both times I was very impressed with the quality of the instructors. They are very professional, very knowledgeable, and also very animated which keeps the class fun and not boring in either the classroom session or during the practice portion. But equally important, they are friendly and want to see you learn, have fun, and succeed. The course is very structured but the final practical (riding) exam on the end of the last day is a totally different atmosphere from taking a driving test at DMV. I do agree the classroom is held at some dumpy feeling motel but it serves the purpose. The bikes, old and not in the best condition, with much of the electronics inoperable (no lights or speedometer working on mine), but they too serve the purpose intended too. If you already have your own bike, assuming certain things like registered and insured, you can ride your own bike instead of theirs. One thing I will note that if you do not already have the skills to balance or coordination to balance on a bike or operate a hand clutch and throttle together from the start, there is no time to learn here and you may fail and/or be asked to leave and come back another time within the first few hours of the first class even though they go over things in the smallest of baby steps. Every lesson is fast paced to cover everything that one would require to pass a DMV riding test with up to 12 riders in a short time in a small parking lot so there is little time. On another note, this is just a very basic motorcycle riding class designed to teach motorcycle riding and safety basics to get you on the road where you have a license to begin the real learning. Additional training is certainly encouraged. Don't be late to any class or you will lose your spot to someone waiting on standby which is where you will end up on a future class. I highly recommend this course... read more

My impression of the school is coming from the standpoint of an older, female customer so it might be a different perspective from their normal clientele. The classroom portion was pretty basic but covered a lot of useful information for brand new riders. The instructor was quite good and kept it from being too boring. He was very good about emphasizing when an item would appear on the test, so if you were paying attention during class, the test was a no-brainer. The venue, a meeting room at a borderline dumpy motel in Costa Mesa wasn't the best, but it served the purpose and I doubt if anyone else cared. I brought my own scooter to class, so I can't speak to the quality of the provided motorcycles, but they had a wide variety. I thought the rider coaches we had were both excellent. Kip and Mohawk Guy. They were extremely vigilant and concerned about safety the whole time. They corrected mistakes and coached in a pleasant, non-critical way, even when he had to tell me for the 20th time to stop covering my brake! On the second day, one student accidentally did a wheelie and the bike almost got away from him. To prevent him from potentially injuring himself or someone else in the class, the instructor terminated his training and sent him home. They are VERY serious about you being able to control your bike safely! If you are a woman (or guy) and taking this class for the first time to learn to ride from zero experience, you had better be confident and fearless. They aren't going to hold anyone's hand or treat you any different than the guys. (I think that's a plus). There's no reason a first-time rider of either gender can't pass the course, but you need to know you are mentally ready and confident. The skills practice is on shifting, stopping in short distances, u-turns, swerving, cornering--all the standard requirements of all courses. I thought the coaches did a great job reminding you of things during the practice so you could improve on the next pass. i.e. turning your head 90 degrees, looking up at the horizon. By the end of the class I was a lot better at most skills and improved my bad habits. Everyone in the class who stayed and took the test passed. Yea! read more

An amazing experience and what a professional group of instructors! Took the beginning riding class, and was really impressed. I had ridden dirt bikes when I was a kid, but, not in the last 45 years. The classroom instruction was very thorough, and riding on the course made me realize that practice, safety, and complete understanding of motorcycling is a lifelong commitment. All of the time I've spent was very well worth my time and understanding! This school, and the organization is great! Well worth it! read more

I've been riding 20+ years, and took the MSF (Motorcycle Safety Foundation) class in 1992 in Pittsburgh, PA. It was better back then -- they have since eliminated some of the training, like riding over debris in road, probably for liability reasons. Too bad. I re-took the course awhile back to encourage my newbie-rider friends to take it. It was ok, though some of the instructors have a bit of an attitude. Perhaps this is because dealing with bikers can occasionally be a pain in the butt? I know that we're not all gems, but this is not an excuse for being a d-bag. They seemed to be nicer once they are convinced that you are taking the course seriously. Why two stars? Well, a friend of mine had to cancel his class spot due to a schedule conflict. He did so several weeks in advance. They said "no problem, as long as we can fill your spot, you can resign up later for no extra charge." They were able to fill his spot no problem. When he tried to sign up again, they said he had to do it stand-by (aka show up every week hoping a spot was open) or pay an additional $150. Come on. IN SUMMARY: Not terrible. Pretty standard MSF fare, and I really liked some of the instructors. And I highly recommend an MSF course to anyone who rides a motorcycle. Even this one. But I am definitely disappointed with the management / ownership here. Short-sighted re customer relations. I used to link to their website on my high-traffic motorcycle info site. I'm not sure I will anymore. read more

I cannot say enough about how great this outfit is, you learn so much about motorcycle safety during your classroom sessions and riding sessions. Greg is very professional and friendly, and Ted, Kip, and Rani are all class acts. These people will prepare you for basic training and riding, and if it isn't for you, the indication comes early. It is better to be safe than to be overconfident and dangerous to other. The team at U-Ride is the best choice! Also, don't expect to pass, I did, but your expectations should be none other than taking what you learned and using the skills acquired to do your best through the evaluation. The instructors are friendly and helpful. They really make it a good learning environment. You feel comfortable making mistakes and they try to make sure you are still enjoying yourself. I deduct a star because the bikes are pretty beat. Took this class in the Age of Covid and it was fantastic. Not a big fan of Zoom meetings, but Ted was a great instructor with a great sense of humor and he made the content interesting. I took the course and am very disappointed. Here is what happened. I got an email stating 7:00 am start time. I showed up at 7 am and told I should have been here at 6:45 am. The email says 7:00 am start- a request to show up 15 to 20 minutes early is just that- a request. Then I am told I have to pay $150 to continue.....These people have no business education to know that 7am required start time shows up on your phone and you plan accordingly. You want 6:45 am start time....than say so! oh....one more thing....they are required by CHP to provide 16 hours of lecture and hands on combined.....that is (2x300) minutes for each ride session...minus breaks....what happened was that very same day that they refused to let me in....they let students leave at 11:20 am....that is 40 minutes too soon....if instructor can exercise discretion to let people leave 40 minutes early.....well you judge for yourself. and lastly, these field instructors on that last day.....they flip and turn into these psychos all of a sudden.... as if someone flipped a switch. I would imagine that people have disputed their subjective findings at some point. I feel sorry for anyone that does not know these people and want to do business with them. Buyers beware. read more

I am not a beginner rider but I took the class so I could get my license without having to take my Sportster through the DMV riding course (I think the DMV makes it hard so people are motivated to take a safety course). I was very impressed by the professional nature of the instructors and quality of teaching. The material is what it is since it's a State of California designed course, but the instructors even made the classroom portion enjoyable. The bikes functioned well different models are available depending on your seat height. This company puts on a very good course. They are very thorough. The practice that the make you perform is best done before you need to know how to do it. Especially for new riders. I highly recommend them. Be forewarned that the class is in a dumpy hotel meeting room, and you will need to put up with a lot of corny jokes. Some of the instructors are a bit over-the-top with their need for control. But all in all, this is a very worth while class. read more

Great Course! The instructors may not look professional, but they train you like professionals. The classroom instruction is good; the timing is about right, not too long/boring, but long enough to hit the major topics and information. The course instruction and training is well done. They offer enough practice time to accomplish a skill, then quickly move on to the next skill. I have never rode a motorcycle before. I was taking the class to help determine if a motorcycle is something I wanted to invest into. I paid over $250, but it was well worth the money (yes, I was willing to spend a couple hundred bucks before investing into thousands for a motorcycle). During the first class, I actually had reservations about getting a motorcycle, but after the first day riding, I felt much more confident in riding. Greg, Kip and J.J. were all professional, courteous and encouraging. They always kept the pacing at a good tempo, stressed safety and kept the mood light/positive at all times.
