Now they have some consultants in which I went to since the stylist was tending to a client. I was advised on the product line 'curls' because I wanted something that would tend to by hair,etc. Now the place is small,but its no elevator... It is pricey, but if you let them show you what to do it ends up putting money back in yr pocket. So the trade off is more out of pocket initially,but savings in the long run. it is in a plaza so you may want to give a couple of extra minutes if you do decide to get an appointment vs walk-in HOWEVER... you can get some of these products at Ulta,where they have coupons in the mail & online :-) read more

They will talk to you about your hair needs and let you sample the products before you bye them. I have natural hair and it is very difficult to trust in new products or stylist/beauticians because the are either telling me to cut it off, perm it or flat iron my hair. I refuse. I like my hair and I want to keep it the way it is. Urbanbella just started offering full salon services, I ususally go there to get more curly pudding or buttercreme for my hair. I will check it out later to see how the services go. The major detractor to visiting Urbanbella is the location. I almost couldn't find it. Then once I found the building I walked around for 10 minutes trying to figure out how to get inside. There is another salon in the front of Urbanbella so you see it when you walk by. You have to enter that salon and continue towards Urbanbella. That is not explained very well to 1st timers. read more

They are great! I know some people are not very happy about the timing in terms of the process, which yes, to warn you they do go very slooooooow. Average time I spent in there was almost 4 hours (if I had went under the dry to dry). To their defense though, they are pretty new and they are VERY thorough, so be grateful they actually are not trying to rip you off and your hair out lol. They make their products in-house and just recently got more assistance with the business, so they will be growing for sure. They do offer drinks (water, tea, coffee I believe) and popcorn if available. I learned so much about my hair from them as well. I would definitely recommend them to a curly girl. Just plan on being there for at least 4 hours lol. I read someone had to cancel their plans due to the service they were getting, but I mean historically speaking being at a hair salon is a very lengthy process lol. ~shrug~ You won't be sorry. I did buy their shampoo (one for me and another for boyfriend because I know he'll want one too LOL #no sharing). and their leave-in conditioner. My bill was fair to me as I also got a steam for my dry hair. It would be nice if they had an app though, but I'm sure they will be growing towards that eventually. read more

Please avoid this salon at all costs. I repeat, DO NOT book an appointment, consultation, or purchase your hair products from this salon. I never even set foot in the place and had a horrible experience. Being a service-oriented business, this place has no concept of good customer service because it cares more about making money than preserving its customer base through quality offerings and a tarnish-free reputation. I set up a consultation and hair appointment with Urbanbella after seeing it listed constantly on the natural hair blogs. I was visiting from out of town, so I called to schedule my appointment far in advance. I spoke with the representative on the phone who briefly explained the consultation process and told me I would need to make a $50 deposit to secure the appointment. I gave my credit card info and that was that. Two weeks before my appointment, I called to ask if it would be possible for them to wash my hair before the consultation since I would not have time to do it before. I was told no, so I decided to cancel both appointments. I was told that was fine and I would receive a call if anything further was needed. Two days later and right before the close of their business day, one of their representatives left a message on my phone telling me that I would have to reschedule because my deposit was non-refundable. Mind you, this was never brought to my attention before. Had I known, as a Maryland resident visiting Atlanta, that I would not get my money back if I changed my mind, I never would have scheduled the appointment. I immediately called back. After arguing with her to no avail about getting the refund, she put me on the phone with the manager, Gerard, who reiterated that the charge was non-refundable. I told him that i was never informed of the no-refund policy, so he said he'd go back and ask the person I booked with if she told me about the policy. Of course, I get a call back from him the next day saying that she had and that i would not be getting a refund. In the end, I disputed the charge with my credit card company and had the $50 credited back to my account because the salon did not even bother to address my dispute. Could it be because they were dead wrong? Absolutely. How dare you charge someone for a service that was never rendered. Don't be trapped. Go to Curltopia or anywhere else but here. Please don't trouble yourself with their awful service and obscene prices. read more

The prices are approximately 10% more here than at other beauty supply stores. I was charged $15 for something I didn't get and the owner refused to give me a credit or even give me the product or something else, which would have only cost her half. (I didn't realize it until a few weeks later when I happened to look at the receipt and saw the item charged.) I could prove that I didn't get the item because the stylist had told the sales person which products I needed, and the sales person bagged them up and gave them to me. The stylist agreed that the item was not something I was supposed to use on my hair. I never got the product, but was charged for it. She kept saying I was asking for a "refund" and that their policy was no refunds after five days. (Which is a pretty bad policy, anyway.) I wasn't returning a product, I was asking them to correct a mistake, of course. At least I hope it was a mistake and not deliberate cheating. I just want to warn everyone doing business with this store to check their purchases and their receipts. Let me start by saying that my appointment (Consultation and styling) was scheduled for 11am and I did not leave the shop until 5:40 PM!!!! Unless you are getting braids or something, it should NEVER take that long at a salon. I had plans that I had to cancel. The salon is too small and they obviously need more help. The consultation wasn't very helpful, but I don't believe my dissatisfaction with the consultation was there fault, but I do wish that i had only gotten the consultation and then left. I went there planning to get a STRAW set. There website quotes a straw set price starting at $65. Now, I understand that the more hair that you have the more salons charge you for things like straw sets, but my hair is chin length (ie. not long) and they told me to get the flexi-rod set that closest resembled the size of a McDonald's milkshake straw that I would have to pay an extra $25 - are they crazy?!?!?!?!? I won't even go into the fact that they didn't really have any rods the size of a true straw set. So i ended up with cancelled plans, a hair style that was cute, but not what i wanted, and a much lighter wallet - cause they are ridiculously expensive for what i had done. My first visit for two-strand twists cost $50, and I was accustomed to paying more. The stylist made them really fat, which wasn't what I wanted, but I went with it the first time. The 2nd time, I brought a photo, showing a pencil thickness, to be clear. She said, "it'll be a little higher," which was fine -- I was accustomed to paying more. Two hours later, she said it'd be $150. 3X higher is not "a little higher." I'm writing this review to let YOU know that you'll find stylists in Atlanta who are better trained, who communicate clearly and with integrity, and much more affordably. Don't drink the kool-aid -- these ladies are deceptive. Keep going to that shop where they do natural hair and everything else too. I made my first appointment back in September just for a consultation, as I was in the midst of growing my relaxer out. When I arrived, I was greeted immediately and was shown into a cute little waiting room that was well decorated and very comfortable. I was scheduled for only a consultation, but ended up cutting the rest of my relaxer out, after receiving so much education on how to take care of my natural hair. I went back at the end of December for a trim, and was delighted to see that the service was even better the second time around. Their stylists are professionals and know the products they use, and they have great suggestions to help you maintain your hair from day to day. The basic point is - this salon is great. Its comfortable enough and just chic enough, leaving you feeling relaxed to read a magazine and ask all the questions you'd like. Now, it is just a weeee bit pricey...but as long as they maintain the quality of the service they give - I think its totally worth it to leave feeling gorgeous and getting an education on your hair! read more

Well let me first start off by saying that initially I was a wee bit leery because of all the comments about going, but let me say this you can't go off what everyone has to say all the time. I'll admit that when I first walked in the greeting could've been a whole lot better. I'd say it was more of a mumble-grumble when I walked it, so that's something that could be worked on. However, once my stylist (Shuna) got to working I could tell she meant business. I first got my hair shampooed with a lathered based shampoo first and then followed up by the salon's very own brand peppermint/spearmint based lather-less shampoo that felt amazing! Afterwards she placed conditioner and my hair and began to cut. Now, I know how everyone is all like, "well it's good to cut your hair while it's dry and the deva cut is what you need," but for my texture which is between 3B-3C and some areas 4 this was the cut for me. The cut in which I'm referencing is Urban Bella's signature cut. She did a beautiful job shaping it me finger styling it. And get this, it was only for $60.00! Now, I've seen some comments about the deposits which I believe has changed to only having your card held until you cancel your appointment or when you're services are done and you pay. Which in some regards is understandable. I mean if doctor offices do it, I don't see what the big hype is over a hair salon. They lose money when people don't hold to their appointment. My first visit was in August; As mentioned in the previous review; this shop caters to individuals that choose to wear natural hair styles. They offer at least 3 different lines of products specifically the one I went for which is Ms. Jessie's. The staff was nice to me; I thought about maybe starting to visit for at least a shampoo or something until I looked at the price list (very pricey); my only other issue is the size of the place. It's like standing in an elevator and once you get 3 people on, you're scared to turn around. I received a brief consultation on how to use the products for the best results and purchased them and left. Not a bad experience. I just hope they expand very soon and maybe have some specials at some point. 04-15-08: I've been back for products as well as hair appointments and I have to say that I'm now officially hooked! Due to the sensitive nature of my scalp, the stylist that takes care of my hair has to know what they are doing and they do! I just decided I would try it out and figured if I didnt like it, the world was still selling relaxers....so on August 30 I decided to try Urbanbella...I had heard great reviews and it was not far from my house. The staff there was MORE than helpful...after a consultation, I decided to do the Big Chop the next day. My stylist was very helpful in helping me determine which products would be best for my hair type and explained to me how to use them. I was given a sheet with a listing of all the products were specific for my hair. The staff has been attentive to my questions both in the salon and over the phone. I love the classes that are offered though their "hair university". I will say this...it's NOT cheap and can be pricey but I think its worth the it. Okay, I went here after doing tons of research on my own, and felt clear what I was looking for. I thought the salon was nice, and since it was during the week late afternoon, wasn't busy. The receptionist did not acknowledge me or my friend , and when she she did ask me if I had any questions she was curt. Let me start off by saying, Urbanbella is a beautiful salon. The decor is absolutely stunning, and it should be because the prices are absurd. When I booked my consultation, I had to give my credit card info so they could secure a $50 deposit. I was told to come with my hair in it's natural state (curly), so I did just that. On a Saturday afternoon, I went in for my consultation. When I got there, the consultant which was not a stylist proceeded to spritz my hair with water and apply numerous products to the sides of my hair. I looked like a wet puppy! She recommended two products, but I didn't purchase them because I wanted to book an appointment with a stylist. There was no way I would buy something so expensive and not even know how it would work. I booked another appointment with a stylist, and my initial $50 deposit was credited towards my next service, the two strand twist which I told would be $90. I then asked if she would apply more of the product to my hair because there was no way I wanted to go out with my hair like this. Remember it was a Saturday, and I still had things to do. She refused, and I should have known then not to come back. The following Tuesday, I went into the salon, and the stylist said that in order for my hair to curl like the picture on their website, she would need to cut my straight ends. Per the stylist, the Dominicans had straightened the ends of my hair too much. She also kept asking me if I had a relaxer. No, No, No...I would think that a trained stylist would be able to tell if I had a relaxer. I allowed her to cut my hair, and she proceeded to layer and cut three to four inches off. She did the two strand twist, and when it was dry, she removed them. My hair looked nothing like the photo, but she said it would take about three days before it would be the way I wanted it to be. I patiently waited and waited, and on the fourth day, saw no better results. I called them and was told to take yet another trip to the salon. The stylist twisted my hair again and then said she could not promise my hair would look like the picture. Well, let me say, I wish she would have told me this before I spent $190 ($80 for the cut and $110 for the two strand twist) and about five gallons of gas at $4/gallon. Notice I said $110 for the two strand twist, I was given the wrong price when I booked the appointment and was pleasantly surprised when I got ready to pay. They refused to honor the price that was quoted to me by the consultant. I will never go back to that salon nor will I recommend it to anyone unless they just want to pick up some products, no services, no consultations! However, my mom went to a natural hair event in Augusta, GA and came in contact with Urbanbella and had an awesome experience with the stylists and the product. So, I decided to try them out for myself. I scheduled for a consultation and style the same week of finding out about them. From the phone interaction on down to the end of my service, I am truly satisfied. Angela was very friendly at check in, Lynee was very informative during my consultation and Shawna my stylist is everything. Everyone was friendly and professional and the space is clean, intimate and relaxing. What can I say about the products? Amazing! The shampoo has my scalp so cool and my hair is soft and shining. A train wreck is how I would describe my hair & attitude when I walked into Urban Bella after a horrible 'big chop' experience. As I walked in with a tear-stained face, simply asking for a recommendation of what to put on my hair, I was welcomed with open arms by a stylist who administered a nice finger style, for a fee of course! (smile) On the way out I met the owner and she was so nice, understanding and encouraging. She knew my fate the next morning and what would happen when I woke up not having a clue as to what to do, so she invited me back the next day, where I was educated on how to care for my new natural curls. The owner and a staff member walked me through the entire process and how I should 'cherish' (a.k.a. care for) my hair. I received so much information about moisture, products - even styling- that my mind was made up (and changed, as I was headed to buy a wig). The owners and staff at Urban Bella should be commended and acknowledged not only for their natural hair care knowledge, but their unique ability to help clients leave the salon knowing, feeling and believing that they can be who they are with the texture given by God. I left ready to rule the world, and have even cut my hair shorter since that day. While Urban Bella can be a bit expensive, can you really put a cost on healthy, shiny, beautifully managed hair? When we used chemicals we would pay hundreds to maintain our hair, and now we think that natural hair should be free....not so! I visited for the second time in January. My initial visit was a couple years prior. At that time I did not go back b/c of the ridiculous deposit policy and the high prices, but I learned that some of the practices had changed and the pricing seemed more reasonable, so I decided to try again. This time I scheduled a cut and twist out. I went in with a picture of the cut I wanted and showed it to the stylist. For the entire 3 hours I was there, that was the only time she "glanced" at the photo. When cutting, I'm used to the stylist propping up the photo and looking at it frequently as a guide. As I watched her cut, I pulled the photo back out again to ask her if she was sure she was cutting it in the style shown; she cut it while it was wet and with my extremely kinky, just pass shoulder length hair it's not possible to get a precisely cut shape (while it's wet, but she assured me she could do additional cutting after the twist out to get it in the shape I wanted. What I ended up with was just a shorter version of the original fro I walked into the salon with and $85 poorer. My hair should have been blown out (medium heat) and then cut, as I was told by a stylist who I visited, later, at another salon, who was able to "fix" my hair & give me the cut I wanted. She informed me that for my length of hair and the type of cut I wanted blowing it out was the best way to achieve the stacked layers in back that would give an angled bob look when hair is worn in a twist out. Lastly, the prices at Urbanbella are still too high in comparison to natural salons that you can visit just outside of the city. I will not be going back. If you want a precisely shaped cut on your kinky hair, I would not recommend Urbanbella. read more

I have been using Urbanbella products for a year, which I LOVE. Just last night, I had my first appointment with Shauna! She is amazingly magical with natural hair! OMG!!!! She is the consummate professional, and she is very patient, attentive, informative, and gentle. I never knew my hair could look this way. Keneesha, the owner, is also quite lovely! I am always greeted with a warm welcome, and I am never made to feel like I'm being 'sold' to. She is always conversational and informative. This has been, hands down, one of the best experiences. Before I big chopped, I was with my stylist for 15 years who I love dearly. So, it's been hard finding a salon that is trustworthy. I have indeed found it! Thank you SO much Shauna. Let me tell you, I have never had steam hydration before but it was Excellent!!!! It reminds you of a deep condition but with steam. It was fabulous! I'm not completely natural... So, I've always had natural hair...buuuut I put it through some severe color (and bleaching) and heat damage this last year. I wanted a fresh start. I was referred to Urbanbella. I did a bit of research, got mixed reviews, gave them a call for pricing, and decided to just do it since they specialize in natural hair, unlike any of the few salon I'd tried in Atlanta. The price was a bit steep, esp for my being a student...but I needed it all cut of asap! You should be warned about the $50 deposit if you're a first time customer, but it goes to your style. My wash, condition, light consultation, cut, and finger style was $80. I know its a lot, but I figured it was worth it because it was a great thing for my hair. The only thing I would say is that they are a bit pricy, but I would totally trust them in my hair. Okay, so I had a great experience! Everyone was very nice and comforting. My appointment was early in the morning and they got right to it. I was in and out in about an hour and fifteen minutes. It was clear that my hair was damaged and she (Brittney) gave me nice cut (4-6 inches down to about an inch only because i had a spot in the middle that was that short) and evened everything out. I was very comfortable. She told me how to take care of it, she didn't push the products on me and let me know that it would be trial and error. I was satisfied with my new hair and the service. I've been going to Urbanbella and for a few years now, and my hair has never been better. Initially, I used products they recommended, like Hair Rules, but now I use their own product line. In particular, I love their Stretch + Twist + Curl Cream (No. 10P) and Hydrating Moisturizing Cream (No. 23 ) and use them almost every day. My hair has combination texture, from curly/wavy in the front and top, to dry/kinky on the sides and in the back. The combination of these 2 creams makes the my curl pattern consistent and "moist" looking, and I always get compliments from *strangers* asking me if my hair is naturally curly like that, or what do I use, or otherwise, my friends try to play with it constantly. read more

I went here as a first-timer on my birthday to try something new. My short hair had been completely natural for over 3 years and I wanted to go somewhere that specialized in natural hair and found Urbanbella online. As others have stated, I had trouble finding this place. I was the first appointment that Friday, but the stylists still showed up late and that was after I walked around and called several times to make sure I was at the right place, but could get no one and I almost left. I didn't care for the interior and the furniture seemed a bit worn, but I didn't care, if I could just leave looking better than when I arrived! Well, I was told by my stylist that my hair was too dry and she couldn't really do anything for me until I moisturized my hair for 2-3 months. NOTHING? My hair was dry but not undoable! I ended up paying $200 for short-lived comb twists and products that ended up NOT working for me and being quite disappointed, especially when, the following week, I was able to find someone to give me some beautiful two-strand twists at Honeecomb and who gave me something that actually moisturizes my hair - someone who could tell me what she COULD DO for my hair, not what she couldn't! It is now very healthy (months later), so I know my experience could have been much better, but Urbanbella is clearly all about selling products and making money. What a disappointment. read more

The staff very cold...The product I purchased caused and awful reaction to my scalp and Benita was not the nicest or most sympathetic. She basically told me that I was out of almost $40 dollars I spent on a product that made my very natural hair feel like i was receiving a relaxer!!! After dropping a cool $160 dollars on my "prescription" (It's THEIR formula for what your hair needs) I felt like after I had come to their business and supported them that they basically left me hanging. But you live and learn. I personally want to spend my money where the people there are at least happy to see you and are willing to work with you when you have a problem. I have purchased products here and was pleased at first but as I started continuing in my natural hair journey I realized the stuff they gave me some of it was not that natural and I could purchase other stuff that is more natural at cheaper prices. Such as Trader Joe's has a great conditioner that is like a 18 OZ bottle for $3.49. I also got my hair done here for a special event and was very pleased with the outcome but mad as hell and my receipt. A cut should not cost $90 for natural hair in my opinion. read more

I will never go to Urbanbella again. I had a 9am appointment. No one arrived to the shop until 9:30am and I wasn't serviced until 10am. I wanted the color of my roots touched up with a few additional highlights. It took Shauna 3 hours to lift my color and 9 additional hours to do "God knows what." My scalp is burning, my hair looks and feels brittle and clumps of my hair is falling out. I'm pissed. The owner (Keneesha) should not allow inexperienced workers to color-treat customers. She was the person that did my consultation, but apparently she did not tell Shauna what we agreed upon. All that glitters is not gold. This salon is more like copper. Two thumbs down! read more

My experience at Urbanbella was horrible. I came in with a open attitude to get the rest of my relaxer cut out. The customer service when I first entered was very professional. The lady that washed my hair was pleasant and professional. I was introduced to my stylist (I can't remember her name) and she was pleasant as well. I explained to her that I wanted to get the rest of my relaxer cut out and get a wet set. She proceeded to cut the relaxer out. After wards, she told me she couldn't roll my entire hair because it was too short on the sides and back but would rollers set the top of my hair and since my hair was curly she would put product on my sides to blend the style. It was a horrible mess after I came out from the hair dryer. Whatever product she used caused white flakes all over my hair. She used too much product on my hair. I didn't notice the horror until I got and my car and look in the mirror. I went back in to show them how it looked. They agreed it was unacceptable and re washed my hair and attempted to roller set it again. Again it was as hot mess. At this time I was tired and ready to leave. It was obvious the person that did my hair couldn't get it right. The product she used on my side made my hair look like I had greasy finger waves. I spent $260 and trust me I will never go back. When I got home I immediately wash my hair and decided to try some of my products I had at home. Trust me it looked better than how it looked at the salon. After inspecting my hair I notice gashes in my hair. OMG I realized my hair wasn't even cut properly. The middle back of my hair was cut extremely short and nap of my hair was longer and the left side was cut shorter than the right side. I am afraid to blow it out so I decided to wear it curly and I hope it will grow out. I have an appointment with another stylist (Tag Concept Salon). I know they will be upset when they see my hair but at least I know a true professional that caters to natural hair will be caring for my hair. Ladies, I stress PLEASE SAVE YOUR MONEY AND GO SOMEWHERE ELSE!!! My hair appointment was at 2pm and I left furstrated at 8pm. I wasted my money and my Saturday. Ladies, BEWARE of this place. I really wish that I could give Urbanbella zero stars, but since that is not an option, 1 star will have to suffice. I booked a product consultation 2 weeks ago, and paid my $50 deposit to secure the appointment. I arrived on time for my appointment, and there was only one other customer waiting ahead of me. After taking the other client back to get her hair washed, i still waited 30 minutes before anyone decided to take care of me, even though there were two other stylists working. At this point, I could see that my visit to Urbanbella was not going well. The person who did my consultation tried 2 different products on my hair while using flexi rods. She then began to tell me that she was going to try to two strand twist another part of my hair. At this point she decided to tell me and I quote, "Your two strand twists would be much prettier if a stylist was doing them." At this moment, I am thinking, so you're not a stylist, but your conducting my consult, and you don't even have to confidence level for showing me what to do with my hair! A few minutes later she turned on the hair dyer and said, "ok, i'm going to sit you under the hair dryer. I checked out my hair in the mirror and noticed that she had not even applied any product to a huge section of my hair, and did not even attempt to put a flexi rod or two strand twist this part of my hair. I asked her so what are you going to do with this half of my hair? She had the nerve to tell me that during a product consultation they do not style all of your hair. I was LIVID at this point. What do you mean you don't style all of the hair??? Am I supposed to walk around with half of my hair done? I immediately told her that I would not sit underneath the hair dryer, to take the flexi rods out of my hair, and asked to speak to the owner. The owner then told me that she could "try" to squeeze me in to get my hair styled, but a spot could not be guaranteed. So am I just supposed to hope that you have a spot for me to get my hair styled? NO! I asked for a refund for the $50 deposit that I gave them, and told them I would go see my regular stylist that I know would be able to style my hair. The owner then told me that she would not give me a refund for my deposit since "services were already rendered." Styling half of my hair is not what I call service, and after explaining this over and over and over again, the owner finally gave me my refund. it all started out so good. but the next day, my hair looked horrible. i called back and i got the run-around. first, i was told, "that's just how natural hair is". then i told, "no, you didn't let your hair dry before you left.". well, i was kinda throw out the door because the shop was closing and i was still under the dryer. i was willing to stay but i don't think the manager was. after the stylist took me off the dryer, she said, "oh yeah, it's dry." so i was told my my stylist that my hair was dry and I left. when my hair didn't perform the next day, i was upset (i spent about 6 hours there the day before). the place charges too much money not to be held responsible for the hairdo. the manager name was michelle but i don't think she's there anymore. she was very rude. gerold or whatever the owner's name is ... seems like a fool. he trusted any and everything that michelle told him and did not trust the customer. what's the number one rule in customer service? ...the customer is always right. urban bella seems okay on the surface, but if you have a problem with your style or your purchase, the place is downright ugly!!!! professionalism is thrown out the window!!! i would never return to a place where i spent upwards of $150 on the hairdo, another $100 on products, but the next day, the business does not want to have anything to do with correcting a problem i had. it felt like "wham, bam, thank you ma'am". read more
