CSA: We offer a CSA program where members receive weekly boxes of local produce grown in the heart of urban Miami.
EDUCATION: provide urban agriculture education to underserved high school students from across Miami-Dade county, teaching them how to farm in an urban setting, as well as nutrition and sustainability practices.
WHOLESALE: We provide wholesale produce to area restaurants who want to source fresh and local produce and support local farmers.
History
Established in 2015.
The Urban Vegetable Project began as an educational program at Florida International University, teaching urban farming skills to underserved high schoolers.
We have expanded to our second farm at St. Simon's Episcopal Church in Sweetwater.
We strongly believe that locally sourced food benefits the local economy, the health of our members, and the livelihood of our planet.
Meet the Business Owner: Moses K.
Moses began his journey to farming with Department of Education, directing a science-based high school enrichment program for underserved students at Florida International University. His father is from Bangladesh, where agriculture and "local food" is a way of life. Inspired by his culture roots, he turned an abandoned lot at FIU into a thriving farm, and began teaching students how to grow their own food in their backyards and patios.
After a successful season at FIU, he partnered with St. Simon's Episcopal Church to turn their empty, 2-acre yard into a working row-crop farm. Being a church member for almost four years, he has watched the church struggle and saw their vacant lot as an opportunity for profit for the church, as well as food security for community members.
Moses manages both farms with a small team of employees.
