    Meat platter to share!
    Sarah O.

We spotted this American style diner whilst on a day out in Richmond. We were having an early dinner before the theatre and this place was busy at 5pm, which we saw as a very good sign. The cute booths were all taken or reserved for parties but we were offered a table for two in the middle or to sit at the counter. The counter is quite an American thing to do but I prefer not to (I like my feet to touch the ground and have a back on my chair) so we went for one of the small wooden tables down the centre between the booths. It was perfectly fine. We ordered the BBQ meat platter to share and a portion of fries on the side. I also ordered a banana and nutella milkshake. The platter was big for two and had ribs, wings, pulled pork, corn on the cob and slaw. It arrived without the slaw and it took ages to get someone's attention to ask for it but sadly it wasn't very nice when we did finally get it. It had a really tangy, almost fizzy taste to it. The sauce on the meat was tasty and there was a lot of it but it seemed to be trying to disguise the fact that the meat was quite dry underneath it all. The corn was a little overcooked and not very flavoursome but the fries were good. I did like the milkshake and it tasted like it had real banana in it rather than artificial banana flavouring, so that was good. It was creamy and a nice consistency too. The service was very slow, especially when we were trying to pay and it was far from the super friendly customer service you get in a real American diner. I went to the toilets to wash my hands after the sticky/saucey ribs (we were given wipes on the table which was good) but the soap dispenser had fallen off the wall at some point and didn't have anything in it. Overall, an average meal with below average service but in a nice diner setting. I probably wouldn't go again but if I did I'd perhaps try one of the burgers and get onion rings as they looked huge and crispy!

Surf & Turf...whole rack of ribs with prawns

We went to Urban Diner on a busy Saturday afternoon...four adults, one child and one toddler. Eating out with young kids is always a little hectic, but the staff at Urban Diner couldn't have been more accommodating. Seriously impressed with the service here! More importantly, the food was great too! Ordered the surf and turf, with a side of fries (which I hardly touched as my main dish was so filling....the manager there did warn me that there would be a lot of food!). It was all pretty good quality, and would definitely recommend Urban Diner to others. Would be nice to see them open a little bar area too, as the cocktails were gorgeous!

If you are an expat, this will be your new comfort food craving after your first visit. Our group ordered three different sandwiches and shared many brunch dishes and they were all amazing. They serve their buttermilk pancakes topped with bacon and a generous helping of syrup on the side. The eggs benny came with fries and was delish as well. All of their amazing sandwiches come with an individual pickle that is made in-house. We shared a Chicken Cobb (Corn fed chicken, smoked bacon, avocado, blue cheese, boiled egg, tomato, red onion, lettuce & mayo on 3 slices of toasted white), The Toronto (Slow roasted topside beef, melted English cheddar, leaf lettuce, tomato, pickled hot peppers, red onion, & horseradish mayo on toasted sourdough), and The Medley (Roasted turkey breast, smoked ham, bacon, melted cheddar & emmental, lettuce, tomato, red onion, pickled hot peppers & basil mayo on toasted sourdough). This place is locally owned and the vibe is very laid back. We went around 12:30 on a Saturday and this place was packed. They take reservations so you might want to make some (we did). Overall, I will definitely come back.

There are few things in the world less appetizing to me than two pieces of pre-packaged soggy bread with one slice of ham drowning in a gallon of mayo that's been sitting on the Pret a Manger shelf all day. In America you only see stuff like that at gas stations, and even there they hold the mayo. In England, they put so much mayo on those sandwiches that it actually gets listed as an ingredient. So whereas you'd have a chicken sandwich with mayo in America, in England it becomes a chicken mayo sandwich. That's just wrong. And nasty. Enter Pickle & Rye. If this place were in Soho or South Kensington then there'd be lines out the door. True Mortlake is in London's upscale southwest and thus home to several affluent American ex-pats, but I feel like that this gem of a sandwich place is missing out on a golden opportunity by being stuck out in the middle of nowhere. It was a trek to get to even from Fulham, and I've got plenty of friends who think that Fulham is enough of a trek already. Or at least that's their excuse for never coming to visit us. This place would merely have to not completely suck to be one of the best sandwich places in London, but it's really taken the art of the sandwich to another level. The owner / head sandwich dude is a culinary school graduate who roasts all their meats, cures his own corned beef (known around these parts as salt beef), makes his own dill pickles (which are easily the best that I've ever had in England) and Russian dressing, with the result being the finest reuben this side of the Atlantic. I will gladly return to the middle of nowhere for another one.

This nearly got itself 5 stars, but not quite there...yet!…read more Meat & Shake was on my radar as soon as it opened in Ealing, it's near enough my local! We finally got round to giving it a try, and in all honesty I wasn't sure what to expect. The place has mixed reviews, and I had my reservations. I don't think my opinion of a place has changed as quickly as it did here when our starters came out! My doubt turned to joy at the first bite of the hot link sausage, closely followed by an amazing Buffalo wing...I knew we were on to a winner! Mains wise I had spotted one of the best looking ribs I had seen in a long time, so asked the waitress for the same thing. My partner went for a burger and we added chips (with balsamic and mayo)and mac n cheese. The ribs were as stunning as they looked, full of meat, juicy, tasty and all round heaven on a plate. The burger was good, but if you want the best burger in the world go elsewhere. it's the BBQ side of things that make Meat & Shake stand out so I really suggest sticking with that...chicken, ribs, hotdogs etc The chips were amazing, I had never even seen chips with balsamic on before, but after these will be covering them in it in the future! The Mac n cheese was average, nice but in all honesty we didn't' need it...the portions were big and we were pretty stuffed! So food wise this is one of the best meals I have had for the price range it's in, and will 100% be going back. The only thing that really let Meat & Shake down was the service, and it wasn't just us. 3 tables around us were moaning to each other about it as well. The issue wasn't staff themselves, it was clearly there was not enough of them. We waited ages to order, and in the end skipped dessert before I aged another week myself. It's a simple change that would have given this place 5 stars...get some more staff on busy nights, and organise them better! In summary, give this place a visit, and you won't disappointed! Maybe just avoid the hot sauce, as it's lethal!

Thankfully the food was really good. Highly recommend the Hot Links sausage. Most of the bbq sauce stuff is quite fruity which isn't my vibe usually. What really irked me was ordering a bootle of tap water for the table which took 20minutes while the waitress prepped two empty tables with water before us.

That meal cost twice the Princes head roast. I preferred the Princes head as it t was more flavorful, prepared more expertly, less fussy and homemade tasting. Bambie loved her fish and chips. It was delicious, tasted alive. If you love Ted Lasso a visit here will be a memorable experience. However, there are times when I want nothing more than to sink my teeth into a tasty burger, and GBK is as good a place as any to satisfy this craving. The food in this GBK is pretty decent. On my most recent visit, I had the small blue cheese burger (the one with sauce) and an order of sweet potato fries. We waited eons for our food to arrive, and I was already reaching the point in my hunger where I was becoming a bit agitated. By the time the food arrived, I was nearly in tears from hunger. Luckily, the burger and sweet potato fries didn't disappoint. My burger was juicy and generously slathered with the blue cheese sauce. The only think I might have changed was foregoing the relish--that stuff doesn't do it for me. The sweet potato fries were all sorts of greasy amazing. Whoever thought of the bacon aioli is genius. Seriously tasty stuff. At first, I was a bit disappointed with the size of the sweet potato fries portion, but by the end, I was filled with greasy goodness. On a side note, once I was at this location and I saw a child put one of the ketchup dispensers in his mouth. Talk about yuck-factor. I'm not sure what happened with that ketchup dispenser after it's adventures in that kid's mouth, but I'm guessing some poor sap shared his germs. If you're hungry for a burger in Richmond, GBK should do the trick, but perhaps avoid the ketchup.
