Totally happy with our experience. We are from out of state visiting Durham. Came here during an afternoon tropical storm and looking for indoor activities. We were greeted and welcomed by a super friendly employee. He gave us tons of tips and tricks, presented us with different axes, showed us different ways to throw, taught us different games. I wouldn't come here again, they put 7 of us in one lane, so by the time our hour was up which included "coaching" 6 of the 7 of us had a total of 10 throws in one game for $27.50 per person. But if paying $27.50 to throw an axe 10 times sounds good to you; then this is the place for you! read more

Check in process was easy, and our work group of 6 enjoyed 90 min of throwing. Bradley was our Coach and he was awesome. He really took time to help each of us feel comfortable and get good at throwing. He then facilitated a tournament for us that kept everyone engaged and had a chance to throw a good bit. He was funny and kept score and everything for us! The bar was closed when we were there so we had to order drinks up at the front, but no biggie. We ended our time with photos and left with our arms a little tired, but happy! read more

This place has plenty of room, making it a great spot to meet new people if you're up for it. Don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone! The drinks might not be the first thing that comes to mind when visiting, but they have a surprisingly good variety to choose from. Decided to go to this establishment because my partner and I wanted to try axe throwing for the first time. We both had a splendid time and quickly learned the techniques to play thanks to our amazing instructor Lisa. Lisa was super great, informative, helpful, and kind. This is my new favorite pastime! So much fun! If you don't have enough people you throw with strangers (kind of like when you go to hibachi and you sit with randoms) but it's cool and you can make friends or enemies I guess depending on how badly you beat them! lol Such a great evening out and I want to have my next bday Update: second time and I had even more fun than the first time. Given the current axe-throwing craze, it took me some time to finally make it over to Urban Axes but glad I finally did! As a dedicated facility for axe-throwing, I have to believe the equipment and throwing lanes are probably built better then the temporary setups you'll see at bars from time to time. If you want to throw, you can make reservations with groups of 6 or more. Walk-in groups are given options for the next available time slot ($20/hour) and you may be paired up with other people. After signing the waiver/liability form, you're given a short briefing on safety and basic throwing guidance from your axe-throwing training. 1, 3 or 5 points for each ring and then there's a Clutch throw for extra points (Small green circle). Throwing is trickier then it looks, getting the sharp axe to stick was the challenge, I had! Urban Axes also has a chill beer bar in the back with canned offerings in the $5 to $6 range, very affordable. Overall I enjoyed Urban Axes and outside of working out the reservations/time slot, would definitely come back every now and then! read more

So much fun! For my birthday I wanted to do something different. I scheduled a block for 1.5 hours. Everything was super easy. I scheduled and paid online. Signed the waiver online also. Once we arrived we checked in and got started. Our coach was amazing! He was funny and very patient with us. Guiding us along the way and offering helpful tips. They don't sale food but you can bring in your own food. 1.5 hours was a long time so we left a few minutes early.... read more

This was the first time my boyfriend and I went axe throwing, and we had a great time! I had zero experience throwing anything, but our coach, Mark, was very helpful in showing us what to do. He gave us several different techniques to try, and helped out with adjusting our form. He was very knowledgeable about what little things we needed to adjust like our stance, where in our throw we let go of the axe, etc. He made sure we were having a good time every step of the way. Even if we were struggling, he offered bits of advice to help us improve and maximize our fun. Both of us had an amazing time and we are talking it up to our friends so we can come back again with a big group. We'll definitely need to have Mark as our coach next time, too! read more

I would like shake that man/woman's hand and slap myself for not thinking of it first! Mock my words, Urban Axes is on to something! When they say its like throwing darts but with way more pleasure, they are not lying! I was able to come visit for the VIP throwing party and OMG I had a blast! The parking situation was kinda crazy but maybe thats because so many people where their. The location is great as it sits in the 'happening' section of downtown Durham. There is Boxcar next door and Dames up the street. The decor is sweet! As soon as you open the door you get a whiff of fresh wood! The service team is awesome. Everyone was so happy and smiling. The energy was crazy. Okie Dokie, lets talk Axe throwing! So at first we were a little scared as it is a real ax that you are throwing at a wooden target board thats posted about 15 feet away from you. There is an instructor at each lane coaching and checking you for safety. This was a lot of fun. As the night grew longer, we threw more and more axes. We became more confident and that fear began to roll away. By the end of the night we felt great and I can officially say this will be a new hobby for me. I'm looking forward to going back and doing this again. Urban Axes is new to the Durham area and they are actually the FIRST of its kind in this area. They can host up to 120 people at one time. Upon arrival you must sign a waiver so be prepared. They have an open full bar as well were you can get some pretty sweet drinks. Looking for something non alcoholic, fret not... they have sodas and water. The facility is brand new so its super clean and tidy. Then we joined a league and met the best people. Axe throwing went from a fun activity to a place with camaraderie I haven't felt since my rugby days. We love that it is incredibly inclusive and positive environment - everyone (over 21) is welcome. a coming together of people you would never have met in your world but now miss between seasons. awesome surprise date when the hubs and I were in town. So different and oh so much fun! We were visiting from Florida and this is different from any place I've been. It's $20 per person, walk-ins are welcomed however highly recommended to RSVP for groups of 6 or more. They do have a small bar which serves beer wine and soda. Since it was just myself and husband we we put in a smaller area for parties less of 6 which was totally cool with us. Our coach or trainer Zoe was AMAZING! She went over the safety rules and then taught us how to throw the axe like a pro. After a few attempts I was ready for the big leagues! Zoe was patient and funny and helped us master the art of axe throwing. The place is super chill lots of people hanging out and having a good time. This is an interesting form of entertainment. I reserved a space for 2 on a Friday night. You are greeted upon entering and then sign consent forms on the iPads to your right. They review the details and then you head inside where there is a bar and snacks for purchase. You wait for your group to be called for the start. Everything is explained and your coach will make a sure everyone is having a good time. We were paid with two other couples. It was a good time but I'm not sure I would do it again unless it was a large group. read more

I had no idea what to expect. Other than seeing the viral video of the young lady nearly taking her head off I didn't know much of what to expect. I'm terrible with names but I think it was Bradley and Haley that helped us not kill each other as a bunch of us from work went as a bit of end of year thank you from our sales team those of us from various back end support teams came along and played. The walk through the coaches give is great and they take it seriously and offer tips or give you different sized or handled axes for how you throw as you progress. By the time it came to the tourney I managed to win which for a computer desk jockey was pretty fun especially since I beat my team lead. Was all good fun. Wasn't too crazy loud and while I did manage to bounce a few axes it was just so I didn't have to walk and get it. :) read more

However, I enjoyed to! And obviously I'm better at axe throwing than I anticipated. The 2 gentleman who assisted our group were awesome. High energy & personable. They discussed all safety rules & explained the process thoroughly. Parking was a headache! With all the construction downtown & other establishments its nearly impossible to find a park. Oh, and pedestrians everywhere! Mostly the CrossFit runners in the way & running into traffic so watch your surrounding. Read signs carefully as plenty of lots are restricted or pay lots. I was looking for a place to take our company's employees during the day to celebrate its 20th anniversary. One of our peeps had suggested Urban Axes as he'd gone there before with another group. I gotta tell you, they make this SO easy. Go online, clear pricing, reserve right there. I had a follow up email with a bunch of catering and other experience-type packages (bday, bachelorette, etc). They had several restaurants to choose from - again with super clear pricing. We chose Pie Pushers (one of our faves). Even though I responded a bit late, the event planner was able to make it all happen - lovely food. Bradley, our instructor, was AMAZING. He explained plainly how it was all gonna work and was there the entire time keeping score, giving us pointers, and leading a really super fun meet-up. He had a great sense of humor and he took out any of the shyness we may have had going into a new to us adventure. This really was a superb option for groups. Awesome setup. This place is dedicated to axe throwing. The facility, equipment, and staff were all top notch. For 2.5 hrs, our exclusive coach stepped us through the basics and then ran a 8 person tournament for us. About $35/person before tips and drinks - which I see as very reasonable. The bar is beer and wine only, but great selection in that department. We all felt very safe, and our coach was very patient and had great personalized advice. I managed to hit several bull's-eyes single and double-handed, but also had much more fun than we ever expected going in. Bonus for large, clean restrooms, easy walking distance to downtown and parking, and an opportunity for about 300 axe puns. read more

We came to Urban Axes in Durham for a friend's birthday celebration and had the best time. Who knew throwing axes could be so fun! First each player is taught the technique to axe throwing and is able to practice a few times. This is followed by 2-on-2 rounds where each player is able to throw 15 times. Lastly, our group did a tournament based on the previous games' results. I really liked the set up of the game, and that it was more structured than just randomly throwing axes (like I originally anticipated). Andrew was helping us the whole night, he was very helpful, knowledgeable, and encouraging. Overall had the greatest time at Urban Axes. The location is great, and very close to a lot of downtown breweries. I would highly recommend for a great, and unique experience with friends. read more

YAY! Urban Axes has come to Durham, NC! We visited Urban Axes last night for the first time and we had such a great time! I didn't really know what to expect at first, I was like "Hmm throwing axes?! where? how? I've never done this before!!!" Well, I am sure not many people have done this before but trust me, they are very organized and they will walk you through. When you walk in, they have different color bands and you will find your color section inside somewhere. Ours was Yellow and our instructors, Thad & Chloe did such a great job teaching us! They literally walk you through step by step and show you how to throw axes! I was a little bit intimidated at first because so many people from different color sections were throwing axes and bam bam! those noises were making me nervous but once I threw my axes couple times, I felt like I was a pro lol. After we threw our axes few times, we got to compete each other and I just loved that vibe!! I mean everybody was into this together! Like they yell together, cheer together and you know, it's so fun when you do stuff like this as a big group! Thad and Chloe encouraged and cheered us whenever we threw our axes and I was so hyped the whole time haha! I think throwing axes, this is a very unique concept and it's perfect for team building, casual date night, girls night or whatever! I came to the VIP pre-party opening so my review might be somewhat biased by the open bar and free food, but I really enjoyed my time at Urban Axes! I was very skeptical going in, but it's a really cool concept and something different to do as a group activity. It's probably not something I would do just as a casual hangout, but for a big group event, it is great! The biggest con of Urban Axes is the parking. As with all establishments in the growing Rigsbee area, you are going to have to park and walk (and when Boxcar opens up next door this will only get worse). Once you get in, the space is really large and cool-- very industrial and a great use of a warehouse. When you arrive you will have to sign a waiver (which you probably won't read but they email you a copy that I went back to read which basically says you know you are going to be doing something dangerous and you won't sue them if you hurt yourself or others). The staff is great! Very friendly and the instructors are wonderful at making you feel comfortable wielding a weapon over your head. Some things to note: you have to wear close-toed shoes. I didn't do this and thankfully they have "shame shoes" they let you borrow (which actually weren't bad, although I did feel better knowing I was the first person wearing them). And you're just like the rest of the world, then, which is what makes Urban Axes so much fun. Whether you're part of a corporate team-building activity, a (adult) birthday party, or a couples night out, Urban Axes offers a unique alternative. Unless you've been here before, you've never thrown an axe in your life ... at least recreationally. So male or female, everyone is on par with an obscure skill that's actually a lot of fun to do. Urban Axes is set up with around 8-10 stalls consisting of wood planks surrounded by chain link fencing -- like an archery range and complete with a target. Your group members take turns chucking an axe toward the bullseye. Urban Axes provides a "coach" (who is probably more of a chaperone than a coach ... these are real axes) who handles instruction, keeps the game moving, and keeps score for you. The set up is complete with a nice bar that serves local craft beers, and overlooks the old Durham Bulls park. Each stall has picnic tables if you want to bring food or cake, etc. Parking is terrible ... basically non-existent ... so if your group can travel in one car, I recommend it. The concept is straightforward: you get a bay for throwing axes and an exclusive coach helps with getting a run down of the rules and how to throw axes. We were a group of nine and played the tournament. Our coach Chloe was awesome to say the least. She was so patient with helping us figure out the knack and ensured all of us got chances to throw. For 2.5 hours, this activity was a lot of fun! Do ensure that you have a reservation, especially on weekends since this place gets packed. We reserved almost a week in advance and filled out the waiver too online. So, when we walked in, it was a breeze to check-in and start playing. The have a good selection of local beers. Only downside is finding parking. So, if you find a spot even a little farther from this place, go for it. I will definitely be going back for some more axe throwing. read more

Can we just talk for a moment about how awesome this place is?! I had never before stepped into a place like this or threw an axe before and this place served up an amazing experience. I walked in with a buddy and they were able to accommodate us right away. We were paired up with one of their instructors, Kristin. Can we just talk for a moment about how awesome Kristin is? She was very helpful and fun to us two newbies and was a great instructor and great conversationalist! Urban Axes hiring people like her just make the experience even better. We had a blast learning the ropes. She helped us both with our form and kept it fun all around. It was the fastest hour of fun I've had in a long time. This place has a great vibe.
