I'm almost cracking myself up with this one because how I ended up at Free To Thrift in Kingston,…read moreNY was sooooo not part of the plan. This place wasn't even on my radar, wasn't in my bookmarks, wasn't even a passing thought. I was actually on my way to an estate sale, took a wrong turn somewhere, got lost even with GPS and somehow, ended here. And getting lost turned out to be the best part of my day! First off, Free To Thrift is huge. Like, give yourself some time because there's a whole lot of ground to cover in here. Clothing makes up the bulk of the inventory, but don't come expecting your typical, run-of-the-mill thrift store closet. The vibe here is more like boho, funky '70s, vintagey with an all-around eclectic feel. There's a home section, which I thought was nice. Instead of just throwing everything on shelves and calling it a day, they arranged the shelves by color. One shelf has green drinking glasses, green bowls, little green decor accessories, etc. Another shelf is decked out in black, another shelf was done in all things blue- I mean it just works. There's also a children's section filled with school supplies and games, plus an appliance section up front. There are 2 entrances by the way. Now, let's talk about the discount situation because this part had me looking up and looking down. Hanging overhead is this colorful, pinwheel-looking chart that lets you know which color is on sale that day. Whichever color the flap lands on FREE, that's the sale color. When I came here on a Saturday, green was it. And how you know what's green is by those tiny plastic strings that attach price tags to clothing with a tagging gun. These guys use them in different colors and that's what you're looking for. But here's the thing- even if you don't find the color of the day, you're still not going to break the bank. I came across this vintage animal cracker tin and an interesting circular metal wheel on a small wooden pedestal. Both were tagged $5ea, but my grand total came to just $8 for both. The service is great, friendly and welcoming and couldn't ask for more. This place is one of those places where you might walk in with absolutely nothing in mind, but you'll leave here with somethin.

It's tourist-slop places like this that have absolutely destroyed thrifting; this is not for locals…read moreor regular people. Why are they selling 50-cent books for $15? A VHS tape for $100? These are the people who are buying these from tag sales and flea markets, out from under YOU who would actually appreciate them... and they're trying to re-sell them to you at 50x a sensible price. They think you're stupid and lazy; those are the only people who would pay the prices here. Middlemen need to be eliminated from the equation, and this is the worst of it. They provide nothing but a hindrance between you and what you enjoy, and cope by pretending they're offering a service. Absolutely not worth the time if you're looking for something affordable, and if you're paying $50 for a book you can get at the library for a quarter and actually support your community... good luck, have fun, you're a dope. Again, these are the places that destroy communities and affordable hobbies. No support given.

I've purchased wooden…read morechairs, chest of drawers, rustic end tables, funky lamp bases, metal home accessories, etc with no end in sight. And all it takes is a bucket of warm soapy water, a good cotton small towel to clean these hard surfaces. Now, where I seriously and I mean- seriously draw the line are sofas, mattresses, cushions, pillows, etc. and that to me, is just gross. No offense to anyone. Hubs and I noticed a gently-used $2300+ Pottery Barn dining table at this Kingston, NY ReStore for a flat $700. The poundage on this 8' monstrosity of a dinner table had me sold. Except, it was 2' too big for my dining room. But the price was killer. This ReStore is spacious with furniture gathered into groups. For instance, chest of drawers are grouped together, coffee tables in another group, lamps together, etc. There's leven a back room filled construction items like kitchen/bathroom tiles, hammers, etc ridiculously inexpensive.
