The space isn't huge- but the options are almost endless and exciting here. If you're the type who loves vintage at thrift prices, you'll bring those vintage finds back to life. I recently found two white quartz(?) bookends at $6ea that may seem small- but they're heavy AF. Prior to that, I've found small catch-all trays or other items. The staff is always friendly and willing to answer any of your questions about anything. So whether you want a nostalgic vintage cardigan, a vase, tea set, this or maybe that, Castaways is one of the best thrift+ vintage shops in Woodstock that won't disappoint you.

Normally I would give the store five stars. However, my most recent experience shopping there was less than pleasant. In fact, it was notably strange. Upon entering the store my friends and I were greeted by an employee that I had never seen before. She gave us a rundown of the store while we were looking around and I politely told her that we had been there before and didn't need to be told where and what things were. That was excusable. However, the experience got stranger. I was looking through a box and found a loose pair of pantyhose that I was thinking about purchasing. The employee entered the other room where my friends and I were Coincidentally, I picked up my bag and the pantyhose and went over to another section at the same time she was entering. In doing that I think I may have set off a shoplifting alarm in her head. Without asking, she picked up the pantyhose next to my bag and told us that she was going to put them up front. I protested because I wasn't sure if I wanted her to do that. She proceeded to tell me in somewhat of a scolding tone that she was going to bring them up front (regardless of my protests) and that they should have been left in their packaging (there was no packaging). After this encounter, she kept her eye on us consistently. I tried on two dresses and she interrupted my conversation to ask me a question about the dress I had on. She also asked loudly if anyone was in the dressing room as I was clearly changing in there. I found this whole experience strange and frankly invasive. I also felt singled out because of some unfounded (and obvious) suspicion. I do enjoy Castaways and I have been a long-time patron. However, I am reluctant to go in the store again because I would not like to have another encounter like the one I had today.

Now ive done a bit of traveling and sometimes a place that looks great can be kinda gimmicky, so this was my fear with this location, BUT now that I have been I can promise Mystery Spot was easily my favorite part of our trip. The owner was there, she was funny and kind and very knowledgeable! Another highlight was a shock, the layout! it was so easy to walk through and get lost in each room, everything was organized and easy to look through. I can't say enough how much that helped, I hate feeling like a bull in a china shop so feeling comfortable walking around was a big factor for me. My partner and I purchased our first antique and have our eye on our next purchase here, giving us an excuse to come back to the beautiful little paradise that is Phoenicia. Thank you Mystery Spot! I walked up to 72 Main Street looking for something real, or maybe just a cold beer, but the front…read moreglass door said CLOSED in big red letters. Typical. Behind the glass, faded photos of dead and forgotten strangers stared back at me like ghosts waiting for a train that's never coming. I was inside just the last week, they had lots of cool vintage stuff. ​On the porch sat a wooden crate full of old vinyl records labeled "YARD SALE IN A BOX. $1 AN ITEM." A Camelot soundtrack album was sticking out, warped slightly by the sun. Over head hung a red upside-down sign that read "MYSTERY SPOT," right next to cheap plastic slogans about Cypress Gardens and Clutter World. My big, lean hound stood on the porch planks, sniffing around the wood like he was trying to catch the scent of a better decade, or just trying to get inside. ​It's the kind of joint that hoards the cool junk of a thousand lives vintage clothes, oddities, records, etcetera. Its the kind of place where they don't care if you buy anything, or just browse and they probably don't care if you leave. My dog didn't bark, the door didn't open, and the sun just kept beating down on the boardwalk planks, so we just sat for a bit and split a sandwich.

Opening its doors a couple of years ago in what used to be a mechanic shop (of some kind I think), prices are "thrift"! Not far from the Woodstock line on Rt 212 in Saugerties, Ray's Retro has heaps of 50s, 60s, 70s vintage clothes, bags and jewelry, etc- plus you're guaranteed to find the perfect vintage piece with your name on it! My daughter says I like wearing "loud" things. While I don't disagree, I love adding just a piece that pops to my minimalist look and Rayann's met me there. From the Gong bell entrance to what's inside, every corner here has something for you...that's of course- if you're into this kinda thing. And in the words of one of my favorite artists, "I'm gonna pop some tags. Only got twenty dollars in my pocket. I'm, I'm, I'm hunting, lookin for a come-up- This is f*cking awesome".

Aww...I am just going to take a moment to reminisce about Second Hand Rose, my absolute favorite…read moreplace to purchase previously loved items in Poughkeepsie and surrounding areas. Depending on the frequency of your visit you are bound to find at least one commodity you adore that can be added to your closet; maybe even two, but doubtfully more then that. Whatever you choose will likely be in excellent shape and at a garage sell price that nobody is able to disapprove of. During my first visit here I bought a black peacoat that kept me fashionably warm during winter...$4. I returned the following January and acquired another nice coat for only $5. One time my friend walked out with a $5, 3-piece suit, amazing! You almost feel like you're stealing, but you're not and I am sure if you sincerely cannot pay for something you desire or need that Second Hand will make arrangements for you to take it home. Second Hand Rose is good for more then just clothing. Stuffed animals, photo frames, pins, and the only shop I know of where you can pay 5 cents for hotel soaps, shampoos, and conditioners. I once purchased an old school fondue set for roughly $6, which I still have today. It might also be somewhere to scout out "cash in the attic" sort of stuff if that is what you're into that. The shop is small, yet clean and uncluttered; managed by sweet, little ol' Methodist church ladies who volunteer their time to the community. They kindly pack your purchases in donated department store bags so you get the feeling as if you just bought something from H&M or Gap and you are able to skip happily on with the rest of your day a little bit more optimistic about the world around you. Additional Information about Second Hand Rose: -No Cell Phones. Random I know, but I suppose since it is such a small shop that ringing and loud talking would undoubtedly disturb the other customers (fine by me, I don't need to know what you need to pick up from the store before getting home). -Cash only. For real, otherwise you have to go to the ATM located around the corner. Inconvenient, not to mention that $2+ fee. -If you cannot find street parking, use Kennedy Fried Chicken's private lot located a measly couple of stores away, but don't forget to lock your doors. -Although there was only once I went and it wasn't open, check the hours of operation before making the trip, as they are limited. -This store is not about making money, it is about letting the people of Poughkeepsie know that they are loved. The owners of this store and the volunteers who run it are true servants to the community, make sure to support them if you are able, especially if you enjoy thrift store shopping.

They have pieces dating back to the 40's (and maybe even earlier than that). We were able to find an awesome pair of military fatigues, two perfect fitting Levi's and a couple of really cool genuine military and vintage over-shirts. The owner of the shop was so helpful in pulling pieces for me to try on, especially after telling her I don't love trying on denim. The two pairs of pants she passed me were the ones I ended up buying. Overall 12/10 experience. The ambiance of the shop is great, customer service is A+ and we really enjoyed our time here. You'd think there's plenty opportunities for vintage where we live in CA but this place is unique- he's got a really interesting range of things and reasonably priced. It's a charming store, really mellow and somehow very fresh for so much old authentic stuff!
