It is super easy to book an appointment on their website, you don't have to wait like a month for an appointment and the office is efficient and well run. They help you with your insurance to order contacts (with a rebate and insurance) or glasses. My spouse now goes here too. I also like supporting local businesses. Are you old enough to remember the days when in-person retail was the only option? Nowadays it's so easy to order things online, and let's face it, we all do that. But getting an eye exam and picking out frames is one thing I must do with real, qualified, knowledgeable humans there to help me. I have been going to Pildes Optical for about a decade and I keep going back because they offer superb customer service. Not good service--OUTSTANDING service. Everyone there is friendly, courteous, knows what they're doing AND treats you as if they actually value your business! Their Covid protocol is safe and appropriate but not intimidating. I went there this morning for a minor adjustment to my glasses (which I had purchased there previously.) Not only did they fix the problem, they didn't charge me or try to make a sale. I unfortunately had a negative experience at Pildes. I recently moved so have been looking for a new eye doctor. Based on the good reviews, I scheduled an appointment here because my eyes have been feeling irritated, and I wanted to know if this was due to allergies or simply dry eyes. At the time of scheduling the appointment, I explicitly stated that I wanted the doctor to assess my eye dryness/allergies. When I came in, a staff member greeted me and asked if I would be interested in contacts. I said "yes" -- I was interested in buying contacts, but my appointment was not for a prescription, as I had made clear when I scheduled it. This review is not concerning Dr. Hyde, who was pleasant and thorough. I described my eye irritation and told him that I have a prescription for glasses and contacts from my previous doctor if he would like to refer to it. He took a look at my eyes and also verified my prescriptions. He decided to write his own prescriptions just in case I wanted them, even though my prescriptions had been updated by my previous doctor in June. I thought that this was nice of him even though I didn't really need it. I told him that my real concern was my eye irritation, and he gave me some suggestions for eye drops to handle dryness and allergies. After the appointment, his staff attempted to overcharge me, claiming that I had received a contacts exam rather than a regular eye exam. When I said that I had made the appointment for an exam to assess eye dryness, they pointed to the contacts prescription that Dr. Hyde had decided to rewrite. The staff member who had greeted me reminded me that I had told her I was interested in contacts. I explained again that I already had a prescription, and the reason for my appointment was not for a prescription, but for dry eyes, even if I was interested in *buying* contacts through Pildes. We went back and forth several times until finally, a staff member said, "Fine, just void her prescription and we won't charge her." They scribbled out the doctor's signature and that was the end of that. I feel that the way they handled the situation was rude and unprofessional. They attempted to charge me for services that I did not want nor need. It was unpleasant to have to explain the reason for my appointment after they basically accused me of having a contacts exam. The process was quite opaque. It would be nice to have an appointment system to schedule specific services so that everyone is on the same page. If you do go to Pildes, make sure that the doctor does not write you any unnecessary prescriptions, because they will attempt to charge you for services you did not request. read more

I used this place about a month or so ago and have been meaning to write my review of this place! I called in to set an appointment and that was quick and easy. The follow up call to remind me of my appointment was a nice touch. I came in to get some new glasses as I had quite the allowance on my insurance and left with contacts! Not to mention the contacts were covered so my visit only cost me a total of 35$. The optometrist was incredibly helpful and knowledgeable. I had no clue I had an astigmatism but I learned that upon my visit. He helped fit me with some contacts for the astigmatism and I was off with my trial contacts. Although it was very new to me as I've never worn contacts I left there feeling incredibly confident of my new journey since they give you a training on how to put them on. The contacts turned out to be great and I ended up ordering three months worth. I will be in soon again to use up my allowance on some frames for when I'm not wearing contacts at home. I rated 4 stars because the African American (I'm a minority as well I unfortunately did not catch her name) counter staff didn't make me feel welcomed because I was either gay or a minority or both. Go figure! I literally watched her smile at a blonde haired blue eyed customer and instructed him to take his time and then walks over and asks me if there is anything else they could help me with today and in other words, leave. That sucked because I received 5 star service from everyone there so that definitely stuck out. Outside of the lack of professionalism from her I would say Pildes is doing an incredibly job. Terrible experience with the women staff. A male staff member couldn't have been nicer, but the women who helped us , on two separate occasions, were rude and impatient. Found this place with the help of yelp, so it's only fair I leave a review to help out other people looking for a great place to fill your optical prescription. Took a chance on this place loosely based on the reviews I saw here and I've definitely found my go-to eyewear place. I've come here the last few years and the sales rep helped me pick out two great pairs of prescription sunglasses and frames that fit the shape of my face. She walked me through what my insurance covers and assisted me with maximizing it to my benefit. Highly recommend this place if you're looking for a good selection of frames and great customer service! Wow so many frames, If I can't pick one, am I to blame? I've come here for a couple of years now, mostly because it's conveniently located. Dr. Hyde is a fine doctor. A little quiet and perhaps not as proactive as one could hope, but solid. The prices also seem to be very competitive. The reason Pildes gets three stars is the incompetence of the office staff. I'll elaborate. --When I initially schedule my appointment, the person I spoke with on the phone says she will look up my insurance information and call me back in 10 minutes to go over it with me. She never does. I have to call back the following day. --When I pay for my exam I ask the lady who charged my card to send me an email copy of the receipt. I never received it. --A couple days later, when I call Pildes to purchase the contact lenses Dr. Hyde prescribed, I again ask for the receipt from my exam a few days prior as well as the receipt for my $500+ contact lens purchase. I never received it. --Finally, a couple days later, I ask Pildes for a third time for my receipts and the lady I speak with gives me attitude. At least she finally found the time to send me the receipts I had repeatedly asked for. I don't know whether bad employees or bad management are to blame, but dealing with Pildes has been a pain. read more

Evidently, I'm not the only one to point out their rude and careless staff. If you need to an appointment at your convenience, look for another place with competent receptionists. I have to wait till my next free Monday or Wednesday, thanks to an unprofessional front desk (or whoever is in charge of setting up patient appointment). I scheduled my day around my 1:30pm an eye exam, only to find out that the receptionist didn't pencil me in. I have phone call record, so this isn't my imagination. I made an appointment for an eye examination on 11/4 Friday at 2:54pm, only to find out the receptionist did not set an appointment for 11/16. I wanted to see the friendly doctor who is here on Mondays and Wednesdays till 2pm. I found it strange I never received a confirmation call, but I didn't think the receptionist would forget to pencil my appointment in, considering we were on the phone for more than 5 minutes to look up doctor's name and explaining my reason for a second appointment. Plenty of other places take Davis Vision insurance. Until the manager or owner trains the team of receptionists /assistant, visit ones with caring and professional first point of contact who cares about patients' busy schedule and their initiative to make an appointment 2 weeks prior. The optometrist is lovely, but you won't get to them because you won't be able to get the appointment on your afternoon off. So what's the point in going to them? read more

I was in a bind after looking my glasses on metro north. I called at 500 on a Friday and they said they do same day glasses and the optician was in until 6pm. I walked into their upper west side location and was helped within a minute of walking in by Jay. He pointed me to the cheapest frames, marked down from 199 to 135 complete with lenses. He gave me good advice on the two frames I was choosing between. The glasses were ready in less than 35 minutes. He even took the time to get them adjusted perfectly for my face. This place is going down. I have been a loyal patient for 10 years, but not going back anymore. First, I got the heaviest and most headache causing frame last year, I was talked into by a woman, some new employee. Then, just now, I tried to make an appointment for my son to be checked for eye infection - to be cleared to go back to school, and he most likely doesn't have any infection, I explained it all, the phone rep was going to make us wait till Thursday - 2 more days for a 5 minutes Dr appointment! We have done this before, had a quick check up for my son to clear him from eye infection 3 years ago, it only takes 5/10 minutes, less than the eye exam for glasses and contact lenses. Then I got appointment the same day, but then I dealt with the usual man on the phone, this time there is a not so bright, inconsiderate woman making appointments. read more

Came in here with high hopes. Selection is pretty good unless you're interested in designer frames ie Burberry, Prada, etc in which case there is a VERY limited selection. Salespeople are not pushy, but I have to comment on the prices. I found a pair of glasses I liked that were marked at 259 for the frames. There were multiple similar styles from this brand all marked at $259. Being that I had never heard of the brand before, I felt compelled to check the pricing on the internet. I found multiple reputable online vision retailers selling the same frames (same model number and everything) from prices ranging from 99-129. That's a significant difference! I understand this is a brick and mortar store instead of an online retailer, but imagine my shock when I went to another small optical store and found a nearly identical pair from the same brand tagged at $159! Bottom line - do some research on the frames and comparable prices before buying here. I didn't find the prices to be competitive whatsoever. read more

Unlike other eyeglass stores in the city, there's no pushy salespeople. Everyone here is super professional. They clearly go over every option for lenses, coatings, frames, etc. and - believe it or not - have your best interests in mind. And their lab does great work. I've had experiences with other places where the lenses aren't quite right and have to be redone. But these people are real pros. I will never go to another eyeglass store and I'm more than happy to dump my old optometrist who always kept me waiting forty-five minutes after my appointment time. I have been going to Pildes for years for the excellent eye exams, friendly and knowledgeable staff, my contact lenses and glasses, and the expertise of Jay, the owner. Dr. Hyde, the optometrist, is superb, and every year he tweaks my prescription to perfection. Since Covid, I have been so impressed with the safety measures this shop has taken: only a few customers in the store at a time, masks and face shields are worn at all times by everyone working in the shop, plexiglass shields line the glasses cases to protect both staff and customers, hand sanitizer is plentiful, and the place is spotless. Pildes has outshined every other business in the neighborhood in handling the safety of their customers and staff during these challenging times, and I am extremely grateful to Jay and his whole amazing team! read more

YES!!! Made an appointment for an eye exam. Went in not really knowing my current prescription. The staff were very nice, the store is modern and beautiful. The eye doctor was very professional and efficient. I was in and out of there in under 25 minutes. I only wish they had a better selection of glasses (I love Tiffany frames, which they do not carry). They have a best price guarantee on contact lenses, so I just bought mine there, rather than ordering online, which I used to do. They emailed me my prescriptions so I can take elsewhere for Tiffany glasses. Will return next year. read more

Another very satisfied customer. I went in search of a new optometrist because my old one was terrible. I had lenses made previously that were not anti-glare and reflected everything on them. I found Pildes, read some reviews and deiced to stop by after work. They took the measurements/dimensions of my current lenses and put the order in on the same day. I came back the next day to drop my glasses off and they were ready for pickup in one business day (total of a three day transaction). The front desk staff was super friendly and accommodating. They are also open until 6 everyday so it's easy to drop by after work. What is more, they did not hassle me to get an eye exam- just straight to addressing my problem- and I was in and out in under 15 minutes each time. Here is the part I am most pleased about: the glasses were perfectly done. The lenses are so clear you can barely tell they are even there, and I see perfectly in them. There was a zero adjustment period (wherein at my old optometrist, even if I was getting lenses with the same exact prescription and dimensions, they never did fit as comfortably when putting them on as the old ones). All in all, I will definitely be going here from now on for my eyeware needs. read more

Previous experiences with staff, at a couple other shops, had been such that I'd acquired a realistic preparation for stares and side-eye glances. I was kindly directed to the right person who asked the right questions, offered the best advice, removed the urgency from my emergency and literally made a difference in my day.
