Upland is always a win in our book. We love their beer, especially the sours, we love their food, we always have the best service and taking friends is a blast. The outdoor seating is really nice. It's fairly priced. We never have anything negative to say about Upland. We need to visit the Fountain Square location soon! read more

I came here at the beginning of lunchtime on a Friday on my way to a long weekend trip with my husband and newly adopted dog, Henry. Since dogs are not allowed inside due to the restaurant, I stayed outside with Henry while my husband went inside to get a couple of growler fills. GREAT meal here last night! We were tired and hungry and in a new town. Yelp! did us right with reviews and that's why I Yelp! We were seated immediately at 6:30p and our server was quick to greet us, got our bevs and an appetizer! The spinach and artichoke dip with those soft, warm pita triangles! OMG!! Legit the best Spinach and artichoke dip we've ever had. My friend LOVED her peach cider and now totally a cider drinker! My Prosecco was a heavy pour and light, cold and delicious! My first foray out to eat in a COVID-19 world was a lovely Sunday brunch. A friend and I decided to take our masks on a little road trip to enjoy a beautiful day. We arrived early to try to get an outside table at Upland's main location in Bloomington. We were successful and were seated in their perfectly landscaped patio. We were both a bit anxious to be back in public eating but the staff was very cautious and helped make us feel more at ease. We both ordered beers (on tap) - a sour for my friend and a light, fruity invention for me. We enjoyed our drinks thoroughly. I had looked at the menu before we arrived and knew they used 3 Carrots' (from Indy) seitan in two sandwiches. I went with the dressed seitan tenderloin with pub fries. My friend decided to try a meatball special from the new summer menu. We were both very happy with our choices. The seitan was as good as I remembered from 3 Carrots. I only wished Upland had vegan mayo or another vegan sauce. It was a little dry. The staff was careful and mindful (little cards were used when service was needed). Sanitation and distancing was monitored. The patio and find were gorgeous. It couldn't have been a better re-entry into dining out. read more

Came here for #casualmonday with a friend and man was I impressed. The special beer on Monday "campside pale ale" was perfect. Fantastic beer. In my opinion, the service at Upland is some of the worst I've ever experienced. Maybe a year ago I went and wasn't in a rush so not overly a big deal but was there almost 2 hours waiting for appetizers and food and then check to come. The next time, the service was super slow again and this did cause some issues with a group that needed to get back to work. I feel like Upland has developed the mentality of "we have arrived" and just don't care about service anymore. For a place that used to be a great place for a local meal, they just aren't nearly as good anymore and given the array of options in Bloomington, I wouldn't recommend. And if this is what is considered "budget-friendly," Yelp may need to reevaluate their own criteria. read more

My experience here was all in all great, with a couple things they could improve on. I ordered the beer cheese burger with Mac n cheese and it was delicious!! My pet peeve with restaurants is when their entrees are great and their sides are so so. This was 100% not the case here! I also ordered the Upcycle beer which was amazing. It has subtle hints of lavender which I found unique and delicious. My main suggestions for improvement is the timing. Our waitress was pretty slow, and didn't really check in very often. I was going to order a second beer but she never came back until we were done eating. Additionally, we ordered one dessert and waited about 30-35 minutes until we finally had to find someone to just cancel it because we had wasted too much time already waiting. This place was great! Would totally recommend. We got the Upland Nachos and added BBQ pork on top. Came out to $15 which is slightly pricey but they give LARGE portions. Stacked with the pork on top and well worth it considering it fed TWO. You can definitely share the nachos and make it an entree in itself from the portion. Pork was tender, not dry whatsoever. This was delicious. I went to upland with my friend and she said to try the tofu salad. I'm not a tofu person but this was delicious. The dressing had a chili spice and the tofu was amazing. The greens, cucumbers and tomatoes were so fresh. Topped off with edamaneme and peanuts. This was great and I would get it again! read more

Well, I adored the Pig & Fig burger but they took it off the menu as well as the righteous potato salad. I ate the potato salad first because it was that good. They have a gluten free bun but wah-wah...their new summer menu listed things like pork cracklings that are popped in a shared fryer as gluten free...huh-uh, folks. If I eat food from a shared fryer I'm sick for 2 weeks and that is no bueno. I talked to the server about the seriousness of this gaff and it's not been rectified so the restaurant is off regular rotation for me...I can't take the chance I might get glutened. Worst I've ever been treated at a craft brewery. And worse than most restaurants/bars. I ordered a chicken sandwich, fries, and side of their beer cheese sauce for the fries. (Wife ordered a Caesar salad, no issues there.) The bartender was hustling the whole time with bar and table drinks. But always kept up with our drinks. He noticed we hadn't been served our food yet and went looking. But what he found and brought back was cold and inedible. I tried to eat it, but the sandwich, fries and side of cheese were so cold. (Ate 2 bites and 2-3 fries.) Cheese sauce was crusted over and congealed. The so called manager came over, no apology, pretended like he was taking it off the bill, actually only credited $10 on a $19 meal. When the bill came the bartender had to tell me it wasn't being comped and apologized. I asked for the managers name and was told it doesn't matter, it was corporate policy not up to the 'manager'. (I did eat the cold bacon off the sandwich after I heard they were going to make me pay for it.) read more

I've heard good things and I finally made it here. I really liked the place itself - quite different than what I envisioned. We came for a quick dinner and drink before a concert. We both got salads - I had the tofu Thai which was excellent. What a great choice if you're looking for something light. Came in with my husband sat at the bar--Young man named Ethan tended to us and was phenomenal. Met a chinese-mexican waitress who was also a sweetheart-- Food and beer is phenomenal. However, timing was a bit poor but who can complain, place was busy and shit was on fire. The reason for the 1 star is, unfortunate to say, saw a manager literally sabotage this sweet bartender and waitress as they were working together to make drinks for tables. Literally pulled her away from finishing her drinks and told her to do something else. He needs to go. Ruined vibes because we spent the rest of the night feeling sorry for the serving staff as they were not allowed to pour their own drinks and this poor bartender Ethan getting absolutely overwhelmed. Ethan and Chinese Waitress--our hearts go out to you. Along with Black Manager and Chinese manager host lady and all of the serving crew. I've more than underestimated the food at this place given past experience brew food. The food here is absolutely spectacular!!! My local kiddo decided this was the place to go today because he was craving the Carbonara. I can see why!!! That was probably the best pasta dish I've ever had! The flavors explode and the crusty bread on the side is nothing but perfect! I ordered the Cauliflower Gratin as my main dish and it was perfect! We have been going to Upland for years. We have never had a bad meal or service when we've gone there. It can be incredibly loud on crowded days, but the food is worth the noise. Many vegetarian options available and they have seasonal options which makes it a good choice for everyone. Upland is one of our favorite casual dining spots in Bloomington. read more

Upon arriving at Upland Brewing, I was excited to see the amount and ambiance of the outdoor space. Because the group of friends I was with and I are rather COVID cautious, we often struggle to find restaurants where all of us feel comfortable and provide a fun and energetic ambiance. Upland Brewing was able to meet both of those criteria. Regarding the food, my friend and I both ordered the Sweet Plum but she ordered chicken and I order hamburger. Having sampled both, while both were absolutely amazing, the burger was much better. Additionally, we had a really awesome appetizer of spinach and artichoke dip which was served with the unusual but delicious choice of pita. I cannot begin to express how good all of this food was. The only downside to our dining experience at Upland was that our waitress immediately turned frustrated and inattentive with us after we indicated we wouldn't be ordering alcoholic drinks that evening--her tone became annoyed and she seemed to favor customers who were imbibing more. While I understand that drinks bring in good money, I think it's also important that wait staff serve all customers equally. Despite this small hiccup, I would highly recommend Upland Brewing to COVID cautious diners alike. read more

Upland Brewing is really awesome! I didn't have a chance to tour the facility, or to see the actual brewery, but I stopped in with a friend to eat and drink and we had a great time! We shared the Poutine, and it was absolutely delicious! It was actually one of the best I've had in the area. I loved the large cheese curds it was served with, they were perfect! I had the Two of Tarts sour ale with my meal, and it was delicious! I liked it so much I ended up purchasing several bottles of beer (large, and a variety) to take home with me. I opted for the WIT Macaroni & Cheese, which was delicious! It's A LOT of cheese! The cavatappi pasta was cooked perfectly, and swimming in cheese, so the toasted garlic baguette it was served with was a welcome addition for dipping. If you're looking for a great spot for lunch or dinner in the Bloomington area I definitely recommend Upland Brewing! read more

This was my first in-person restaurant visit since the beginning of the pandemic. I was nervous and a bit on edge, but from out of town and needing to eat. They are approaching operating under COVID-times rules well. We got there right at opening, and were seated right away on the outdoor patio, at the table furthest away from the door to the inside....but closest to the corner where diners walked to go to the entry to get seated. That was what made me the most nervous, as Indiana folks seem to be very unconcerned about wearing masks. The staff and employees, though, were masked and gloved up and ready to serve. The tables are spread far enough apart. Each table is given a card that is green on one side reading "Swing By" and red on the other side reading something like "Come back later." This is to prevent excess contact but still get the server's attention when needed. Drinks were delivered with plastic covers over the top (to be removed when drinking....they are there for cleanliness and are not made to be sip-through lids). The food was brought out and delivered on a rolling cart. The server asked permission to touch our plates and set them on the table. They have a prescribed traffic pattern through the restaurant. I appreciate how seriously they are taking the current state of things. For what was in the control of the business to manage, they were doing a good job with COVID-times actions. As for the food and drank... I love Upland's sour beers. Getting one of their barrel-aged sours on tap costs less than getting a big bottle of it in the store, although they are available in my home city. The restaurant is not doing tastings or flights at this time, but I was pretty confident I would like whatever I chose. I got the Revive and it was refreshing and delicious. I also got the bison meatballs. The dish was a little dry overall, could have used some source of moisture/sauce. But it tasted lovely. The mushrooms and greens with it were great. I could certainly see a future visit the next time I find myself in Bloomington. read more

COVID SAFETY: There's an outdoor eating space at the Bloomington location and it was a great space to eat at. All the staff wear masks (and wear them correctly, covering the nose) and the indoor area has a capacity limit with the encouragement focused on taking patrons outside instead. I think I may have found my favorite french fries EVER. Yes, at a brewery. To preface, I like what I endearingly refer to as "fat fries." They're somewhere between a potato wedge and steak fries. Upland's fries are beautifully crispy, but still thick. YUM. I know nachos are their most popular dish, but I wonder if they'd do fries instead of tortilla chips.....THE POSSIBILITIES! This makes me feel ashamed that I gave the new BJ's in town such a high rating because Upland is what they can only HOPE to be. The prices here are more reasonable than Scotty's too. We tried the: *THE CUBAN SANDWICH (Smoking Goose's city ham, smoked pork, mojo, pickle chips & melted swiss on a hot pressed bun): This was one of the items our server recommended because Upland has a smoker. SO on point. The smoke on this was beautiful! I appreciate that Upland's cuban is NOT dripping with oil; I've had many a cuban that are disgustingly so. I also asked for a side of habanero hellfire sauce on the side to eat with it. The hellfire sauce is FUEGO and I love it. You can really taste the habanero. Lastly, the portion is a FANTASTIC value. I could only eat half, so I took the other half to-go to eat for dinner. Still tasted just as good (quick 400 degrees in the oven to warm it back up). *HOOSIER CLASSIC PORK TENDERLOIN SANDWICH (House-breaded tenderloin, lettuce, tomato, & onion on a toasted bun): Solid & as mentioned above, way more affordable than other places in town. *PRIM SOUR ALE (Sometimes a name says it all. Prim was inspired by blending the names of the two main ingredients, plum and cardamom. This sour ale uses Basis as the base beer, adding whole plums to capture the sweet fruit flavor and tartness of the skins, and the incredibly aromatic cardamom. Prim is aged in wine barrels for 4-6 months, further intensifying the complex flavors of this brew. I've been to Upland Carmel once and liked it but the original Upland in Bloomington is even better! They've got an impressively large space that was packed on a nice late summer evening. Luckily, our group snagged a table on the patio - highly recommend dining out there. I'm not a beer girl but they carry local vendors like Oliver Winery so I ordered a glass of blueberry wine. I loved it so much, I stopped at Oliver on the way back to Indy to buy a bottle! We split some appetizers (pretzels, etc.) and I ordered the pulled pork sandwich for dinner which was juicy, tender and delicious. Despite the busy restaurant, service was solid.
