I've lived in Bloomington a long time. There have been a number of restaurants that have come and gone. I think BJ's has been here a number of years and seemed like a place I'd like to check out at some point. Going in I knew nothing about their menu, but recent reviews seemed pretty good, so I figured it was worth a shot. We got there just before the main dinner hour hit, so we were seated quickly. The server was nice enough, and we were pretty low maintenance. The menus were difficult to read in the dim light. Our easy early dinner was pretty elementary. A couple of Pepsis, the "garlic and parmesan bread", the chicken parmesan, and the philly sub. Please note the quotes around the bread. I was expecting actual garlic bread. Actual bread sliced from an actual loaf with a nice layer of garlic and butter. What did we get? Breadsticks. Garlic breadsticks are not garlic bread. Period. They're the lazy alternative you get when you order pizza. Quick and easy for a pizza place, lazy for a place like this. As for the main courses, I made the unfortunate decision to order the chicken parmesan. We used to have a place in town called Butch's. I used to get a cheap chicken parm delivered from there. The one I had tonight wasn't really a step up from that. It was a cheap flat chicken patty that was slightly burnt in a couple of spots. If the picture makes it look overdone, that's because it was. Add a minimal amount of cheese and spaghetti that wasn't really that great, and that was my meal. Bleah. I could pay half as much and get far better versions of that. When I was deciding what to order, I really wanted to order the philly steak, but there are so many veggies listed I thought it would be a pain for the server to have to make notes to not put any of them on. I was also a little worried that after removing all of those I'd be left with a big bun and a tiny bit of meat and cheese. I am NOT a veggie person. My partner got that, and it looked GOOD. She said it was, too, as were the fries. On another night I might have had them take the burnt chicken and trade it for the sub. Tonight I just ate enough to satisfy my hunger. It's maybe the second meal now that I haven't felt compelled to finish. Based on my meal, there is nothing that would bring me back there. The steaks might be good. The burgers might be good. The chicken? No good. If it were based on my meal, it would be two stars. Going with 3 because I was told the other food was good and our service was fine. I came down from Indianapolis with my mother to meet and support my brother. Afterwards, we decided to go have lunch. Since it was his day, I let him choose the restaurant and he choose BJs. I'm a foodie and looked at the reviews and menu before hand and thought Uh Ho! Our experience could not have been further from what I had read! A significant contributor was our server Evan! Great personality, excellent service and an all around professional! He made our experience extremely enjoyable! Each food item that we ordered was on par! We started with mozzarella sticks (perfectly coated and fried), small wedge (better than Ruth Chris), gyoza, calamari (huge portion) and the chicken club. The bonus? So, BJ's is located at the Bloomington mall, near the IU campus. We've been here once before, but this visit was a little off. Service was extremely slow, which I've come to expect these days, but this time I was also disappointed with the food quality. I had the 11" deep dish "BJ's Special" pizza, and when our server brought it out, it seemed like it had been sitting under a heat lamp for about 20 minutes. I normally like my Brewpubs small and independently owned. BJ's is a national chain, and it's a big place. In previous visits to their Sacramento, Concord, and other BJ's outposts, I've found the size and crowds to be overwhelming, which at times had distracted from what is an impressively expansive menu and tempting tap beer selection including local varieties. The California restaurants also report out calories, which has represented a nutritional choice challenge. A few days ago, Gayle and I hosted her Son and his daughters at the Bloomington BJ's. We walked in relatively early and the place was surprisingly quiet. I terms of "overwhelming" "noise", that prize went to my step-son who talked and talked and talked to the wait person about the shortcomings of his Margarita, and superlatives of the next bourbon and 7 drink and his ahi taco appetizer. At one point (after rolling my eyes in full view of the wait person and his daughter offering running commentary), I suggested that she be tipped by the word. Beyond that entertainment, our food choice were very good (I had a chicken club and fries, while Gayle enjoyed her Kale Salad combo), and the quantities were enough to bring some of it home. Paid almost $50 for a small wedge of lettuce a small cup of soup and a small pizza. The pizza was supposed to be a reg pep pizza it had chunks of tomato and barely any cheese might as well ate a breadstick also alot smaller than expected wasn't good at all salad was a joke could've had a toddler make a better one. The $10 cup of soup was the only thing that tasted ok and just very disappointed in the quality of food compared to the price. I don't mind to spend $100 for 2 people to eat but this was the worst I've had in awhile. I've been coming to this location at least a couple times a year for past several years. Each time the experience seems to get worse. First up, they tried to seat us in the bar area even though we had a kid with us. The main dining room area was pretty open yet they decided to seat us next to a large group to one side and worker station behind. I asked the server about Gluten Free options as it was hard for me to read in the menu. I asked about the steak wedge salad and she checked stating that the steak has gluten so that was out. She the. got me a GF menu, which was nice. So we finally go to order, my husband asked a question about the sliders vs hamburger. Waitress said if you get the sliders add cheese. Okay, he agrees and orders the sliders. Then she immediately states that they are currently out of sliders and burgers! Shouldn't that be something that you tell the customer before they spend 20 minutes going over the menu. Next up, I order a salad off of the GF menu and I specify (as the menu instructed) to replace the crispy chicken with the GF oven baked chicken. The salad eventually comes out with the crispy chicken. My husband said that there must be a mistake because that's the wrong chicken. To which the waitress responds, but that what she ordered. Umm no! We talked about how I had to be GF numerous times. I specified to make sure they did the GF chicken. At that point, I said just bring a small wedge salad as I didn't want to wait for them to cook the correct chicken. When the waitress returns, she says the manager is going to remove the salad from our bill. I appreciate the gesture. Unfortunately, the salad they removed was the salad that they brought out wrong. I was still charged for my substitute salad. Not that I was trying to get free food, but the whole experience was a cluster. Additionally, the avocado egg rolls came out cold, with brown avacod and something burnt that my family wouldn't eat. The manager never came to speak with us. Today is my first visit to BJ's. I started off with a Bloomington, Indiana local IPA, Switchyard. The flavor was a bit on the tart side. Not my typical liking for a beer. However, it came out very cold which is much appreciated. I ordered the Crunchy Jalapeño Burger. The burger was really good. Hot and juicy with onions and a chipotle mayo. The fries were very disappointing. These were ice cold. I didn't eat them at all. Overall BJ's wasn't anything to get excited about. Subpar service, cold fries, and a good burger. The baked potato came served with a visible thick coating of salt on the skin. This is not a thin layer, it's wetted and rolled so that there's a shell of salt flaking off to the touch. Similar grams of salt in simple roasted asparagus. So much salt in the prime rib coating that my daughter just ate some of the outer pieces of the RB and she complained of a stomach upset from the salt. Service: We were seated at a table, only to discover that they didn't clean the floor and I was sitting with my shoes in spilled pink lemonade. Waiter would disappear and not reappear for extended periods of time. Food: No avocado rolls, seems they never have enough on hand to last to dinner service. My son's chicken sandwich was decent. I asked if the deep dish pizza was good, server said : "Oh yes". Well I guess he should ask the patron if they are from Chicago, because the standards are high. I ordered the mini size, which was the size of a small bread plate. That was fine, as the pizza was beyond awful. It looked and tasted like some 5 year old kid made it. Ive had better frozen pizzas for $4. This was a glob of undercooked dough with limited amount of cheese, no taste sauce and frozen sausage. I'm a bit biased because BJ's reminds me of Los Angeles/my childhood, so I was stoked that a location was opening up in Bloomington. Because it's a chain, food quality is pretty consistent. I used to only eat pizza and pizookies at BJ's but I've ventured out to other parts of their menu: *BJ's Premium Wings - No complaints here - solid wings. Good crisp & good marinade/sauce. I've had it with both BJ's Peppered BBQ and Nashville Hot. Both have a nice kick but aren't overwhelmingly spicy. *Roasted Portobello & Asparagus (sliced portobello, asparagus, baby field greens, balsamic vinaigrette, dried cranberries, goat cheese, toasted pepitas) - I love this salad. this is usually what I order. It's filling and only 290 calories. I hate it when menus have to list calorie counts - ha. *Fried Wisconsin Cheese Curds - for the amount you get, I think it's overpriced ($6.50) because there are places in town like Scotty's and Brothers that have better value with their cheese curds. But, hey I love me some cheese curds *Roasted Golden Beets with Basil & Goat Cheese - I just like that they have this as a healthier option on the menu. Tiny portion because it's in the snack section. Their app has also been game-changing. At first, I thought it was annoying that another restaurant chain had to come out with another app but it's proven quite useful. I've ordered thru the app for pick up and it's a good way to view the menu in advance. In the mood for pizza and decided to go with one of the best in town! BJ's Favorite is absolutely Devine-the crust is light, buttery the sauce...YUM!! The menu is gigantic and can be a bit overwhelming so be prepared, just take your time in deciding. The Brussels sprouts are delish too if you're into that kind of thing. Which I am. You know, after being open for two years, you'd think that service would get better... not worse. Well, surprise! It got worse. I think there is something about Bloomington just makes all the chain restaurants suck. All the chain restaurants in Bloomington are significantly nastier when compared to other cities, whether it be Olive Garden or Red Lobster. I've been to this BJ's multiple times. Every time I come, the bar drops a little. This last time was the worst. We were told that it would be about a 20 to 30 minute wait, so the group of 3 of us went to the mall for a little. Ten minutes later, we received our text from BJ's and walked back to the restaurant. We were seated promptly and ordered our drinks. Everything was going so well until after we finished ordering our entrees. We just kept waiting and waiting for our food. After what felt like 30 minutes of waiting, our waiter came over and told us that one of our entrees was not ready but the other two were. He asked if we would like for him to bring out the two ready ones first, which was fine with us because we were starving. Surprise, the food was lukewarm because it had been sitting there for so long. A few minutes went by until the last meal came out: tri-tip and shrimp scampi. The tri-tip is suppose to be more tender compared to other steaks, but it was chewy and hard to swallow. The shrimp scampi was not shrimp scampi. It looked like badly grilled shrimp. There wasn't any sauce on it; it was dry. My friend ask the waiter to bring some sauce for it like she was expecting for the scampi. He brought it out but she said it was just butter. She was very upset that her meal that was over $20 turned out the way it did. She barely touched her meal so I brought it home for my dogs. They loved it! read more

Had a great meal on Thurs. evening with an excellent server (Chloe). Returned Saturday evening and things were not quite the same. Granted it was Parents weekend at IU and fully expecting for things to not to bee so smooth our expectations were not set at such a high level. Hostess and manager were great upon our arrival and seated us in a timely manor. Clearly they were not staffed fully for the onslaught of a Parents weekend. Waiting for 2 wines, soda and water for over 20 minutes. 1st app came about a hour later and was cold but plate was piping hot (sat under the heat lamp for to long). 2nd App then cam 15 minutes later. (was hot though). Then dinner started to trickle in. One flat bread completely cold. Salad with chicken and the chicken was raw inside. Protein bowl was odd tasting not the same as on Thursday. Buffalo wings came out as Original and not with Buffalo sauce. Burger never showed up. Kitchen manager came out upon request and looked like he was on major stress load. (totally felt for him). Told him thanks for comping our complete meal and we tipped the server and left. Ate there Saturday evening. The service was unbelievably slow. I sat at my table for a good 15 mins before my server took any notice of me. Then it took another 15 mins before she brought me the Pepsi I ordered and took my order. It was half an hour before my soup - now tepid - arrived and another 20 mins before my food came. She had not brought me utensils - I had to go and ask for these. In general I have found service at BJs to be fair to poor, though this was worse than usual. The prices are steep for relatively small portions. Oh, and in the summer the AC is set to arctic, so be sure to bring a jacket.
