The tasting room for Uphill is actually on the Main Street in the cute downtown area of Sutter Creek. Seating is indoors with about three tables and a small counter area. Service was attentive and personable. I am a fan of Amador county wines and found Uphill's wines to be very good. So good in fact that I became a member! I really liked their 50% Tannat/50% Tempranillo blend. With membership prices, the wines are reasonably priced (under $40). Highly recommend! read more

Uphill Vineyards is a small tasting room located on the heart of Main Street in the quaint town of Sutter Creek operated by the husband and wife duo of Beth and Ira Rosenthal. Uphill represents exactly what tasting rooms in this part of California wine country, known as Gold Country should be: small, cozy, quaint with unique wines that are distinctive in their own right. Uphill's tasting room might be in Sutter Creek but their vineyards are located nearby in the town of Fiddletown, which is in the Sierra Foothills of Amador County. They stared growing their grapes with five acres in 2007, bottling them in 2010 and expanded their lot in 2014, with hopefully more room to grow in the future. Uphill's grapes are uniquely grown not on traditional agricultural land, but on a hillside on both simple and compound slopes, hence their winery's name, and are cooled by breezes that occur in the area both during the day and night, unlike their fellow wineries in the region where the heat can contribute to the ripening of their grapes. I had the chance to experience the intimate tasting room of Uphill one weekend, and I learned that Uphill is known for five main varieties: their Zinfandel, Primitivo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo, and Tannat. I had the opportunity to try a simple wine tasting which contained three distinctive pours their 2014 TnT, 2013 Primitivo, and their 2013 Tempranillo. I really enjoyed my sampling of TnT, which by the name alone means Tannat and Tempranillo and represents combination of flavors from both France and Spain. This wine pairs subtlety with any spicy food and the Indian Samosa and spicy green chutney that Beth so graciously presented to me as a wine pairing. I loved it so much that purchasing a bottle at an affordable $19 was a no-brainer. Their Primitivo which is similar to Zinfandel has more fruit and less spice, comes from a Croatian grape. It pairs nicely with pizza and pasta with spaghetti sauce. Their Cabernet Sauvignon represents one of the few grown that are grown in the region. It represents a more of a European style Cabernet meaning having a nice balance and smooth finish. The Rosenthals were so nice they even provided extra pours of their three dessert wines, their Angelica, Port, and Muscato. Paired with various Ghirardelli Chocolate squares, I was in dessert wine heaven! Of particular note was their Angelica wine, which they recommend pairing with cheesecake. I had such a great experience at Uphill Vineyards, especially since I got the chance to get to know owners Beth and Ira on a real personal note. So much so, we compared notes on their work lives as they work out of the Bay Area and live the Sacramento area, but Uphill represents their passion and every weekend they open their tasting room, so the public can experience their bold blends. They told me that they've never been to California prior to visiting family, they liked the feel of the area with the vast rolling hills which provided a welcoming vibe. That's what I love about the wines and tasting room of Uphill Vineyards, they represent passion and pride, and the Rosenthals need to supported and celebrating for following their dreams. This wine tasting room is nice. They had a person playing music and the person who helped us was knowledgeable and friendly. We went to get some port but they were all sold out of the one we wanted. They suggested the Angelica wine which was very good so we left with three bottles of that. Worth driving to and trying this wine. read more

And an added bonus was her cute little dog. It's super cool that it's a dog friendly place. Recently we learned that Gina is no longer there. The wine here was all decent. They have a large selection of wine from rose to dessert wine. I liked the reds a lot here and they were quite tasty. However the atmosphere here was a bit awkward. I wish they were playing music to jazz the place up! The wines were tasty, and the help was good, but there was something missing from making it a 4 star experience. I think some music and energy would help make it a place that would continue to pull me into other trips back. read more

I've followed Uphill Vineyards ever since they began with a shop in tiny Amador City. When they moved, temporary panic set in. Was this beloved little winemaker skipping town? Thankfully, they only moved to downtown Sutter Creek, a mere couple minutes away. Their new space is just as bright and welcoming as their last, just with more foot traffic. Owners Beth and Ira were behind the bar on my last visit and were more than happy to let us sample their latest offerings. I don't pretend to know a lot about wine, but their award-winning offerings are amazing across the board. There wasn't one variety that I didn't like. The thought of leaving without taking some Uphill with me was too dreadful a thought. I ended up buying a bottle of their latest blend. Unfortunately the name of the blend escapes me - we ended up drinking it that night! read more

Gina and her little dog Nola are wonderful at Uphill shop in Sutter Creek. You get to taste many wines. Wines are so good my wine drinking friends all became members. As a member you get to do a Wine and brunch pairing at their vineyard. We were their first group that took them up on it. Delicious food and yummy wine pairings. One of the best new little wineries in Amador County is Uphill Vineyards, whose lovely (and airconditioned) tasting room is located in Amador City. Ira and Beth Rosenthal offer a selection of wonderful wines. There is a delicious Pinot Grigio, an award-winning (double-gold medal at the 2015 California State Fair) Rosato di Primitivo, (a dry and crisp Primitivo rose), a fruity Primitivo, one of the best foothill Cabernet Sauvignons I've tasted, and an elegant Tempranillo. There's also a delicious Black Muscat dessert wine. All the wines are made from grapes frown in their vineyard in Fiddletown, Amador County, except for the Pinot Grigio, whose grapes come from Calaveras County, and the Black Muscat, which is made from grapes from another vineyard in Fiddletown. There's no tasting fee, and the wines are very reasonably priced, at between $20-$28 a bottle. They're open on Saturday and Sunday, and Ira and Beth are delightful hosts. This has got to be a must-stop on your next visit to Amador County. read more

In this heat we decided to go to Sutter Creek and taste wine. We just walked into Uphill and were met by Ira and Beth, who shared their delicious wines with us. We tasted several bottles and ended up splitting a case. I asked where were their awards and they pulled out handfuls of ribbons and rosettes. They are modest about their wins. Loved their wine! We spent 5 days in Amador County and tasted a ton of wine. Uphill's 2012 Tempranillo is full bodied and delicious. Ira Rosenthal, the owner, is only at their location on Saturdays and Sundays. Definitely worth the trip. read more
