1/22/22 I stopped in while waiting for brunch seating next door. Those store is so cute and has a bunch of little knick knacks and kid toys. Their garden flag and kite selection was really nice. The lady at the counter was friendly and explained the different kite categories to me. I bought my daughter a rainbow kite for $18.99 plus tax. Pretty reasonable and the material quality was much better than the previous ones I bought on Amazon. My first time kite flyer, five year old daughter did not encounter any issues and she greatly enjoyed flying it. I will be back the next stop we visit the beach to see what new things they have in store. read more

Up up and away located in seal Beach on Main Street. This is a nice place. If you want to have flags for your house fly a kite has a Lotta nice horse stuff for the house or outdoor fun. What a fun place to be in. For our God-daughters b'day weekend, I wanted to introduce her to kite-flying. I called to make sure they had kites for 6-year-olds and the fella over the phone ensured they had kites for all ages. We get there within the hour and WOW! It was a treat to see so many kites, toys and nostalgia from my own childhood- I stepped back into the fun, carefree days of my youth- watching the kite flyers in Golden Gate Park or on the beach below the Cliff House. A moment of childhood innocence swarmed about me- but we were here for my pretty-pretty Emily ; ) The lady in the store was pleasant and patient as she explained the different kites (I forgot her name)...but she was informative and answered the barrage of questions we had about the whole arsenal of supplies on display. Before leaving with the kite, Emily eyed slime- not just any ol' slime, this was GALAXY SLIME...apparently that's a thing these days with kids and slime...so we got that as well and made our way to the beach- just walking distance from the shop. Being the novice that I am, and in retrospect, it probably wasn't the best day to go fly a kite- extreme gusts of wind blowing my hair, sand and everything else in every direction- but it was a fun challenge and there were times when the kite went airborne for a good amount of time before crashing, nose first, back into the sand. Thanks Up, Up & Away for the beautiful kite, the friendly service and the priceless memories with my BFF and my God-daughter on the windiest day ;) Walking back to the car, we treated ourselves to Sweet Jill's- yum!!! read more

What a cool little shop! Based on the name "Up Up & Away Kites!" you'd assume it's a kite store and you'd be about 40% right. The other 60% of the store is filled with lots of unique knick knacks and lots of retro toys. When I walked in I was not expecting to walk into a blast from my childhood past. So many old school toys; Mr. Bill, Pac Man, Rubix Cube, Simon Says, Slinky, Whoopy Cushion, Gumby and Pokè just to name a few. "He was once a little green slab of clay. Gumby!  You should see what Gumby can do today. Gumby!  He can walk into any book, with his pony pal Pokey, too. If you've got a heart then Gumby's a part of you!" Yes, I bought the Gumby doll! The shop has many fun and unique gifts too so if you're looking for a gift you can't find everywhere, you may find something here. If you're a sports fan, they've got a few things for you too. The 2 ladies I dealt with, Stacy and Terri, were wonderful and very helpful. I have been buying hundreds of dollars of flags for the past 8 years and when I tried to return 3 American flags of he incorrect size they called the owner who declined to do it for me, even when I offered to just exchange and/or a store credit. I am a 100% disabled veteran and on. A limited income and don't think y this was fair. The flags are the hard to get annin tough Tex which the clerk confirmed how they have had trouble getting them. They won't see any more of my business and I hope anyone who reads this. read more

Today was the perfect day to fly a kite, but we looked up our local kite shop in Redondo Beach, and saw that they were permanently closed. We were so sad to see that, but wanted to support a small kite shop as opposed to Target. I found Up Up & Away Kites on Google, and we set off. It was only a 30 minute drive for us, and when you have nothing better to do on a Sunday, why not take a drive and go on an adventure to somewhere new? Well, we were surely surprised! We had never been to Seal Beach's downtown pier area. It's a great location, with a ton of small shops, restaurants, and bakeries. We went to Up Up & Away, and found a huge selection of kites. They were all reasonably priced, and it was so fun for K to see a huge selection of different characters. We let her choose her kite, and she found a few other knick knacks like a koinobori wind sock, a windmill, and a beach sand toys kit. There are a ton of sports flags, and other wind socks and flags too. A very large selection. Hand-picking items is so much better than Amazon. We love supporting local shops and we enjoyed the friendly service, and then walking around the neighborhood. Go check them out. You are sure to find something that you love! I have frequented this store in the past for many years. I was highly disappointed today when I walked in and the owner or employee was on the phone totally ignored me. I was ready to purchase something, I had been waiting for 10 minutes . She even walked into another area of the store to continue her conversation when I tried approaching her to let her know I was ready to purchase Two flags. Another person walked in , she made eye contact and seemed to know her . She immediately hung up the phone and then proceeded to help her and ignored me. Went in and there was a rude female working there. The man that is usually there is so friendly and helpful. But oh no, this lady was rude, rude rude! Not the least bit helpful and refused to provide me with a receipt, even after I repeatedly asked for one. She replied "it's in the computer", but what good did that do me or her since she didn't appear to know how to work the computer very well? Really fun assortments of flags, kites and toys of all kinds, plus cool crafty things. The man at the counter was incredibly nice and genuine (not fake sales-nice). I would have loved to buy lots of things (including starting my "oh no I might be addicted to holiday flags" collection) if I hadn't already splurged on too many things shopping on Main. But I did get a great little gift for my dad. They also had some cool/cute sports ornaments like a red and blue mini Dodgers chair and fun postcards. They have "Metal Earth" models that you can build - everything from planes and buildings to Iron Man and R2D2. So cool!! Very whimsical store. A very nice kite store with more than just kites and decorative banners. There are tons of really fun retro toys. Stuff we palyed with in the 60's and 70's. The kite section is very good, with a wide variety of sizes, shapes and styles. I love to fly kites at the beach, and a nice kite shop so close is handy. But be careful - they prefer no sandy feet. (I chuckle at that) There are flags and banners to represent your hobby, your pets, your religious sayings, the holiday or your mood. Fun spinners are available to brighten up your yard or deck. This place is great! My boyfriend and I bought our first kite at a different shop and realized we didn't have a line for it. Buying a new line was our first interaction with Glenn who was extremely helpful. Then we went out and our kite just wouldn't stay up. We decided to go back to the store since they had been so nice and ask for advice. Glenn took great care looking over our kite, giving us recommendations, and even showed us how to pack it back up. Stepped in to purchase a simple starter kite for my kids and an hour later I walked out with a kite, two flags, and a garden gnome. Staff is extremely knowledgeable, very friendly, and present you with the right kite for your particular need/use/ability. The staff are kite enthusiasts and would prefer to sell you the the right and not necessarily the most expensive kite. I LOVE THIS STORE!!! They have the largest selection of flags and kites I have ever seen. Large flags, small flags, flags for every occasion, flags for every sports team. It's crazy. We love this store so much! We come to Seal Beach specifically to come to this charming shop. I like to put flags out in front of our house for each holiday or special time of year. I have a wrought iron stand that the flags are attached to, and the owner of the store is so helpful in directing you to where the flags are for a particular theme or holiday. She asked me what my "flavor" was, and I asked her what that meant. She said it was geared to whether I wanted something whimsical, funny, serious, pet lover, etc. I was interested in anything "ladybug" related, and also ones for Thanksgiving/Autumn and Halloween and I wanted them to be colorful and "cute." She had some already out on display but, based on my "flavor," she went in the back and brought out many more to choose from. I bought multiple flags and a couple new iron stands. Rarely have I encountered such a lovely, friendly, helpful shop owner, and it is truly a pleasure to shop here. In addition to all sizes and shapes of flags, they also carry amazing kites and wonderful, unique toys. Make a day of it and come to Main Street in Seal Beach. It is an adorable, quaint avenue to stroll and window shop. There are many wonderful restaurants and cafes, all within one block of the beach and the pier. One thing I really appreciate is that every little shop and restaurant on Main Street is a "Mom and Pop" establishment...no chain restaurants or stores. It feels really good to support local owners and businesses. When you arrive on Main Street in Seal Beach, you will swear you have stepped back in time to Mayberry. It is a feeling of happiness and nostalgia spending a day here...you'll love it! read more
