I have lived within a block or two radius of this store for almost 2 years now. After spending a fair amount of time and money at this store, I will now go out of my way to get what I need at other places. I'd rather walk right past it and continue onto Harvard Square than to give them my business. I understand that a smaller store will have slightly inflated prices in comparison to chains. But anytime I've needed a convenience item from here I have more than paid for it. I ran out to purchase butter one time and ended up paying almost $7.00 for it. really? The help is always distracted, on their cell phones, or just generally putting you second to whatever they were doing. The porn behind the counter? tacky as fuck. I really don't wanna look at that when I'm trying to buy milk. The smell of Subway is about the only positive I can come up with for this store. The booze isn't a selling point as there is a liquor store much closer to my house not bending me over in the process. read more

Nice and convenient place. I just tried their lunch salad bar today. They have fresh materials for an inexpensive price!

I've been coming to this market long before University Market. Used to be "Little Peach" years back. It's always been so close to my apartment so I go out of convenience. I get my Ben and Jerry's here, water, treats and even a decent bottle of wine! There's a "Subway" inside. When I want a tuna sub, I can get that too! Only downfall is the owners/employees are very cold slightly rude. You can say hello to your customer after many years and it won't kill you either!!! read more

Equidistant to Au Bon Pain for my lunchtime victuals or break from work snack, University Market does have, as others have said, the basic needs to live: Subway, salad bar, Fritos brand Corn Chips, porn, beer, and wine (list may vary by individual's needs). What has gone unmentioned is a rumor I heard from a coworker who used to buy cottage cheese there. Apparently, they used to shut down the refrigerated sections at night. I think cottage cheese is tortuous enough--one does not need it past prime and pukey. Since they inserted the Subway, I'm sure they've educated themselves about the benefits of refrigeration, but I'd still skip the dairy if I were you. UM also arguably has the two greasiest entrance doors of all time. Easily queasy folk may have to turn back when catching these sunlit smudges. Their dusty wine choices may be sparse, but just feast your gut on their wide selection of 40s including, but not necessarily limited to, Bud, Bud Light, Busch, King Cobra, Olde English 800, Haffenreffer Private Stock, Coors Light, Colt 45, Steel Reserve, Milwaukee's Best, Miller Lite, Miller High Life, Carling Black Label, and Schlitz. A quick skunk-check of a few of these babies could blow that refrigeration rumor out of the water. When should we start? read more

I was drawn to University Market for the Subway. I no longer go to University Market because of the Subway. Ive never had a worse sandwich created than by the staff here. You get the feeling that they really, really hate you for being a customer. The bread is always underproofed and limp, and the sandwich "artists" rarely listen to what you want, and when they do, seem incapable of remembering more than 1 ingredient you ask for at a time. If you order a sandwich from this Subway, be sure to watch like a hawk, because you'll end up with jalapenos, dijon mustard, and nothing else on your tuna sandwich if you dont. Topper? You have to ask to get your sandwich cut in half. Come on. As for the market, its not bad, with a decent selection of goods, beer, etc. They now have a $5 minimum purchase for a credit card. Avoid and save your love of sandwiches. read more

This place has all the basic needs, and its conveniently located, but it comes at a price. Other stores are cheaper. You have been warned. As of April 2006 they have also opened a Subway here. read more

I like this place. Like all "markets" like it, everything is more expensive than if you went to CVS or a real market like Trader Joe's or Shaw's. The Subway is a hidden find though. They almost always have a $5 sub special going, and good food that cheap is hard to find in Cambridge. I think the staff is all related, which kind of gives it some character also. read more

Good selection of beer for a convenience store, especially if you're planning on 40oz curls for the evening's exercise routine. There is a Subway inside, if you dare eat what they make. Subterranean, so the entryway smells like piss. They're here, there's beer, get used to it. read more

By far one of the rudest faculty I've ever seen. The women working in there were helpful, HOWEVER the owner and manager were ABSURDLY rude. Cussed at me to leave their establishment when I simply asked for a refund on a sandwich I ordered that was made completely wrong read more

The worst subway you can ever imagine and rude customer service. There prices aren't marked on most of the items causing inconvenience. Though, this place is the most convenient option for me, but I prefer to walk longer to avoid it, but then someday I am too lazy and this place never fails to disappoint me. read more

I love this place. It's more expensive than a supermarket, but perfect for all the basic needs, like the tomato at midnight. And they have no minumum for credit card purchases. I've noticed that they let their stock run pretty low before replenishing, so it's also a bit of an adventure to see if they have your favorite pint of Ben & Jerry's or if you're stuck with vanilla. read more

I'm that person that's always out of milk when the blizzard hits town and University Market has saved my ass on a number of occasions. They're open later than most bars in Cambridge, and through hurricanes, earthquakes, floods and alien invasions, but the absurd markups, shriveled fruit, and curt service will do nothing to bring me in at any other time. For a while, there was a great thing going on here when all 1/2 gallons of milk were priced at 3.99, including the organic. Someone got wise to that last year and ended the party, thus relegating University Market back to the ranks of just another overpriced neighborhood convenience store. read more

I seriously live across the street from this place, and they hold it down. Clutch finds are at a bit of a premium, but I can get what I need for only 40 cents more than it would be at regular store. Sometimes they beat the Harvard Sq. CVS' on the prices. (Not often, but it happens.) The guys get to know you, and they are very nice. There is also a Subway sandwich spot in there. read more

Expensive and REEKS of body odor, but less of a line than at CVS. Not to mention the alcohol selling thing.

Reviewing the subway at this location. The employees there have no "training" on how to make a sub. They do not spread out the toppings you ask for and if you ask for a dressing the put so much on that the bread becomes soaked and soggy. The only person at this subway that knows what he is doing is the black guy. The indian ladies are terrible and screw up my sub all the time. I'll walk in and if the indian ladies are working I walk right out. I decided to give them several chances, including today, but yet again she didn't spread the toppings and soaked my sub with mayonnaise read more

Just moved within spitting distance of the market, and I. Am. Loving it. I could get away with not going to the real grocery store for weeks with this place so close--with their medium sized selection of cereal, lean cuisines, and booze, what else could a girl possibly need?? The only thing that sucks is that they stop selling said booze at a certain point. While I realize this is obviously not their fault, the beer just sits there so tauntingly as I stroll the aisles on a late-night munchie run. read more

I'd like to respond to reviewer Tristan S., with the comment that the sandwich he had was awful. Most likely what happened was that the person there was in training, or perhaps he spoke incoherently and ccondescendingly to them because, admittedly, they don't all have the best English skills. However, if you're patient with them and manage to surmount the inconsequential language barrier, you'll get a better subway sandwich at this place than any others. In fact, I can't go to other subways anymore because they are so miserly with their toppings compared to University Market. Granted, not all employees are as talented as the others, but the randomness is worth it when you get a good one. As for the market: it's good and clean. The prices aren't fantastic, but you pay for convenience, don't you? I would never grocery shop there, but I wouldn't hesitate to pop in and grab the random thing that I'm missing every once in a while. read more

If you're a local, harvard student/grad or professional, and get to know the staff you will be pleasantly surprised how they take care of you. This is a family owned business, and they look out for the people they know. Some prices are higher than what you pay at grocery, but that's convenience and living in a neighborhood. Like anything else in this world you get what you put in to the relationship. Take a chance and say 'hi'. read more
