My husband and I just went through a complete bathroom renovation and one of the tasks we were not looking forward to was picking out the tile that we needed for our new shower and bathtub because of all the different choices of tile to choose from. (and in all honestly I thought that is why we hired a contactor - so he could make the decisions:)) So I was so happy that after walking in and "browsing" we were helped by a very nice employee who not only helped us narrow down our choices but also told us when she thought a color combination did or did not work. She took a lot of the stress out of the process and made it fun. We were also able to take some samples home so we could see what it would look like in our finished bathroom. This was really helpful as showroom lights are different then what the tile looked like in natural light. In the end I think we came away with some gorgeous tile and am so happy with the way it all came together. The bathroom now is truly one of my favorite places to spend time in. I cannot recommend Universal Tile enough -they definitely know what they are doing! read more

I am building a new house in Colchester Ct. I needed tile for the showers and bathroom and laundry floor. My tile installer recommended Universal tile in Hartford. I hate shopping so i took my sister with me because I know nothing about tile. When i went in the store i was skeptical because I wanted to stay in budget and was hoping I could get something nice and cost effective. The store was fairly empty as it was about four in the afternoon. I went to the counter because i didn't know any prices and told the saleslady what i was looking for. i also told her i knew nothing about tile. She laughed and said she knew everything about tile and then proceeded.to put together tile patterns for my laundry room and bathrooms quickly but never rushing us and explaining how the color combinations would complement each other. She was also mindful of my budget. She gave me the estimate and said she would email the invoice the next day so I could review. I received the invoice the next day and she also secured a ten percent discount. When i went to pick up the order it was packaged correctly, and the warehouse staff was exceptional in helping load my truck. I will tell you that the tile looks fabulous, and I have had many compliments on my tile selections. although the credits belong to my salesperson Stacey Mckenna. Stacey's title is lead designer and for Universal to have such a qualified person on staff speaks well of the company. My husband and I went in looking for new tile for the mudroom/entry room that we are in the middle of remodeling. I was really impressed with the variety of items on display, everything from natural stone, porcelain tile, and wood floor. They have a number of tile installations on the floor inside as well as some sample bathrooms set up. The person who helped us didn't even work in the tile section and she was so great, finding us a wood sample that matched what's on our walls so we could compare it to tile samples. We are so glad we went to Universal Tile for our new build project. We wanted tile floors in the new bathrooms, laundry, and foyer, as well as a tiled backsplash, fireplace surround, and shower. We came in here after our contractor told us to come here to look for tile for a bathroom remodel. We walked around/ looked around for about 20 minutes and realized we needed some help knowing what we were looking at as nothing is labeled. We asked a girl who worked there and she told us she was leaving in 2 minutes and couldn't help us and that everyone else was busy and offered no help or solutions? Do not recommend if you need professional help and advice. Bad experience will go to a different tile store. read more

Save your time and do not bother going here. While the store is large and has a lot to look at, you have no idea what anything costs. You don't know the hardness rating of anything and despite the 8 or so workers behind the desk, no one actually offeres to help. Went here today and will never go back. Asked for help from a male worker and he said he would find someone since vinyl flooring wasn't his area. He quickly found someone to help us and a lady with long black hair came over who was obviously annoyed to be interrupted in what she was doing to help us. She was extremely rude and gave us attitude when we asked for quotes for two types of vinyl. She was not friendly, not helpful and unfortunately turned us off from using this company. read more

If you have had to do home renovations, you know that there are some things that are invaluable. One of those is a supplier that is knowledgeable, trustworthy, and that has good prices. My wife and I found such a place with Universal Tile. We have been several times to purchase tile for various parts of our home. One thing to mention is that I am not the handiest guy in the world. I know some things about renovating and building materials, but to a large extent I am at the mercy of the contractor or material supplier. The staff at Universal is very friendly and very patient. They will spend time with you to go over what you want, your price range, and your schedule. They don't try to push you on the most expensive tile and materials, and will try to tailor their recommendations to your own needs. They factor in waste and scrap when giving quantity estimates, and in my experience their estimates have resulted in maximum area coverage with minimal wasted tile. Additionally, the prices are very reasonable, more reasonable than at most other spots in the area. There are a broad range of materials, so if you are looking for a bargain or for high end tile, Universal has it. Perhaps the best part is that the store has Saturday hours, so you can go on the weekend and have enough time to browse and purchase. read more

You will find a large selection of tile here, recently I've also seen hardwood, laminate and carpet flooring. Some of the prices are really good and can compete with online prices and others are well over and I do mean dramatically over other places. One could argue that maybe it's just a different tile or product but I know for a fact that's not the case so if you are on a tight budget you may want to check big box stores first for your desired stone or tile. Don't get me wrong I'm all for supporting local stores and family owned business but when the price difference is 40$ a sqft in this economy that's just unreasonable. No one wants to get ripped that bad. On a good note they are about 2-3$ cheaper per sqft on a C3 rated Quickstep laminate. Now that's a good deal. I've yet to actually make a purchase here due to that I'm a bargain hunter and with 3 kids when I find a product I want and another place offers this goodness for even 30 cents cheaper I will go there instead. Staff is mainly friendly and helpful although some don't take to criticisms well when it comes to prices there is no flexibility and I wish they were more willing to work with you on that specially when you are buying a large amount. Also many people do their research and may know more about the product they are seeking out so it's rather condescending to assume everyone walks in clueless and trying to push a 60$ tile down their throat as if it was such a good business decision and you are doing them a favor. My contractor recommended this place to me for my bathroom renovation. I didn't know anything about tile and the wide selection in the showroom was a bit overwhelming. Fortunately, the saleslady was very knowledgeable and helpful. She helped me narrow down the possibilities by budget and preferred color scheme, making the process efficient and relatively painless. In the end, I got floor, shower, and accent tiles I'm very happy with and although I went over budget, the price was still reasonable. I do have a very minor quibble: the sample tiles they give you to take home are actual size and they can be quite heavy. There's no little sample size tile so if you're the indecisive type, bring muscle with you. read more

I am so happy I used these guys for my kitchen remodel!! They're not the "typical pushy sales people" you encounter more often than not, in retail. They're friendly and honest about products. I didn't feel pressured into purchasing something I didn't need, or buying the most expensive option as opposed to something else. My wife and I were looking for old-fashioned 4X4 white tile. The service was so spectacular you would've thought we were looking for $10/ a square foot stuff. The sales person, whose name I didn't get, showed us a discontinued line that was.50 cents a square foot. It was a vey well made Italian tile with a great reputation. We bought it and the warehouse people we picked it up from, in the back of the store, were so polite and helpful I thought I went back in time to the 60s. Forget Home Depot and Lowes. Just skip them and go straight to Universal Tile. You will not regret it. Oh, and BTW, I don't know anyone there and have no connection to then what so ever read more

First time ever shopping for tiles for our bathroom remodel. We expected a fat Italian guy with a big gut hanging over his belt, smelly of a cheap cigar and burping up a greasy garlicky odor from his last dinner. Instead we had Tai take care of us. Tai was gentle, sweet and very close to being angelical. She took so much time finding the perfect combination for our bathroom. Everything was in stock, we headed to the warehouse in back and were on our way. I had three bad experiences at Universal Tile in Hartford - Shame on me. The first time my husband and I went and spent almost an hour browsing the tiles and woods. Not one person asked us if we needed any help. We were okay with it as we had just started our search for our home design. The second time I went alone - it was busy - the two girls behind the counter were so rude to the couple in front of me. They confided in me that they were unhappy with the service, but they were more scared of the girls! When I got to the counter and asked for help, you would have thought I asked her for the moon. I so inconvenienced her to have to get off her stool and go help me on the showroom floor. It was busy and maybe they were tired. I went elsewhere and bought beautiful tile. But, it's not over yet. A few months later, tonight in fact, I was on a mission for a certain tile and went back again. The place was empty. I was the only customer. Note the operative word, customer. Those same two girls were there, and meaner than ever. They pointed to where I should go and look for the tile I asked about! I asked them for the name of their manager and they said they didn't have one. I left. Little did they know, we just built a new home with 3 1/2 baths! I will NEVER go there and I will tell everyone I know why. There was no customer service at this location - only self serve. read more
