This review is based on my interactions with Marlon when soliciting bids for some work at a new (to…read moreme) house. This is not based on any work they did for me, as I did not hire them. Calls were returned, the staff was timely, courteous and thoughtful. The bid I received was very competitive and I had high confidence that they would be able to do a good job, on time and on budget. However, I did not personally go through all the listed work items with Marlon. My proxy did half of the items, and the gaps reflected in the bid and I was not comfortable selecting them with such a big disconnect. I will definitely keep them in mind for my next work - and ensure that I personally go through the work areas to ensure clarity on both ends.

Built Different employees are design and craft experts who respected my requests, budget, and home. Alex and Mo stood by their promise for quality by going out of their way to not only ensure that their work was on point, but also by making sure that the work of previous contractors met their standards, undoing it and redoing it if they needed to. They offered advice and recommended affordable materials that were aesthetic, durable, and functional. Built Different always considered my lifestyle and preferences whenever they made a suggestion, making me feel valued and like they actually cared about me, my home, and my satisfaction. I initially hired Built Different Reno for my bathroom renovation. Because of their work ethic, I hired them again for a fireplace remodel, and I plan to hire them in the future for my kitchen remodel. You truly can't go wrong with Built Different Reno.

I hired Ashyana to perform kitchen and bathroom remodeling in my condo in April 2018. I was…read moreimpressed by their references and had a week when I was out of town where they had full access to the apartment, which Mustafa Khaliqy assured me would be sufficient to do the work. The first day, they locked themselves out and had to destroy the doorknob to get back in. Three days in, the demolish was done but no work was done for the rest of the week. After I returned, I found the condo full of dust with no groundcloth laid down to contain it, and was forced to stay in a hotel a full three days additional. Inspecting the work, the countertops were misaligned to the wall and the standing shower was installed with a 6-inch concrete lift that forced me to raise the showerhead nearly to the ceiling. The kitchen tile wasn't even extended halfway under the sink! To his credit, Mustafa's team finished the tile and moved the showerhead. Still, the fit and finish were substandard. I discovered quickly that the shower grout was not sealed properly and several of the shower floor tiles came loose. Just a few years later, the condo below mine indicated that they have water leaking into their ceiling. The culprit is the drain pan installed in the shower; from the inspector: "The drain pan (Which is a basically a rubber liner) was not properly installed. The purpose of the the liner is to trap and water that seeps through the tile and divert it back in to the drain. In the access panel on the living room side you will be able to see that the rubber liner was cut and not glued properly at of the corners. This is causing the water to drip on the ceiling of the unit below. To repair this, the shower must be demolished completely and redone properly. Unfortunately, there is no way around this."

Instead our project was completed ahead of schedule, just under budget, and the quality of the work was excellent. And that includes an expanded project scope that came up when we discovered large issues with a neighboring property. Fairmont was incredibly flexible and easy to work with. They were always willing to listen to our ideas and make changes as needed. They were also very responsive to my questions and concerns. Fairmont's foreman or a partner subcontractor was on-site on average more than five days a week for the entire many-month project. This allowed them to keep a close eye on the work and make sure that everything was done to the highest standards, and if not the first time, they made sure it was redone. Unlike several neighboring projects, we had no stop work orders, no neighbor complaints (complements actually), and all our inspections were successful. I would highly recommend Fairmont to anyone looking for a home builder or doing a major urban renovation. They are professional, reliable, and they do great work.

However, I am an old house lover (now a three-time renovator) and keeping or reinventing old house detail was important. Carlos manages construction, the tradesmen, the sub-contractors, and the overall quality of the workmanship on the job. He is an experienced builder, taking pride in bringing ideas to life but careful to offer full disclosure on the pros, cons and risks of each option. Jose manages the business side of the project - budgeting and billing, tracking and documenting changes, purchase of materials, recommending vendors for kitchen design, tiles, stone, flooring etc. Most important was his management of communications between Fairmont and me, the homeowner. Jose took time to ask questions and listen carefully to answers. I know and appreciate how rare it is to have good communication. I also have lived the consequences of mediocre communication. Mistakes are costly. Jose follows a protocol of asking, clarifying, and following up with an email restating our discussion and inviting me to comment, add, or correct. The answers don't matter as much as the asking and listening. This worked so well there were no horror stories. To summarize: Strong management of the permitting process, of sub-contractors, deliveries, security of the property and use of appropriate safety measures. I think its important to say also that the project was managed ethically, honestly and respectfully. Everyone on the job was pleasant and upbeat. Weekly walk-thru meetings insuring the work was proceeding according to agreement. Efficient cascade of information, decisions and/or changes, from homeowner and Fairmont to the tradesmen and subcontractors. A solid team of workers - excellent workmanship, site management and daily clean-up. Also, no profanity or loudness, no littering, no complaints from neighbors, and very happily, no accidents. Lastly, Fairmont checks in with you periodically during the year following move-in. Together we created a list of little adjustments and changes that you can't anticipate until you move in. All done! The house is lovely - beautiful carpentry, millwork and all the details that make it livable for me. I feel very fortunate to have done this work with Fairmont and I would recommend them without reservation!
