Universal Movers did an outstanding job of moving furniture and around 30 boxes of kitchenware, glassware , books and other items from our 14th floor apartment that we are moving out of in San Francisco to our home in Oakland. It was a hard job in that the apartment building elevator is too small for furniture, so they carried a large heavy couch and large chair down 14 flights of stairs! Hugo, Juan and Eric not only did an incredibly difficult move down multiple flights, they handled all the delicate items in boxes with expert care, brought the furniture into our living room and back room and set them up, and stored the boxes carefully where we wanted them, with nothing at all damaged. Avoid this company at all costs! I listened to others to tell me to go with this moving company just cause they said they'll weight items instead of counting it. So i decided on this company. When from the beginning I didn't trust it. The reviews go years back there's a reason. I would give this place 0 stars if I could. I was moving out of state. And they weren't in communication with one another or me. I had to keep reaching out. Multiple people told me different stories after I kept reaching out. One said truck issues. One said they didn't load the truck. One said they wouldn't load the truck til the 15th. Another said the night I was leaving they were 5 hours away from the destination I was going to be at and will be there from 1pm-3pm so I left that night on a 11 hr drive to get there. Only to come find out no communication. And I get all those responses. Come to find out they won't have my stuff here for 8 days. I came to an empty apartment. With no way of cooking, no bed, no clothes, or anything. If they were honest before I left and said they weren't leaving I could've stayed still in a house with ny stuff. And would've understood. They collected my stuff on the 8th and according to them left with it on the 16th why do you need to hold my stuff that long if you didn't plan to leave til then. That makes me assume they went through it or something especially without the proper communication. I rarely write reviews. This is only my second review on yelp. I wish it could've been a good experience but it wasn't. Very unpleasant . Didn't even get compensation or a discount. I should've stuck to my choice of a moving company. read more

I am very impressed with Universal Movers. Rudy, came to our place, was very kind, professional, and helpful. We received a very fair quote and they were always available for any questions we had until and during our move. They were also prompt and provided all insurance documentation to the property management group, which they also appreciated. We were quoted an arrival time frame of 8-10am on the morning of the move and arrived at 9am. Omar and Eli arrived with smiles on their faces and were very warm. Got on several calls with this company to get a quote for our move from one city to its neighboring city. The driving distance is 20 minutes. We are two people living in a small 1BR apartment and do not have many furnitures. In the call to survey our furnitures, we let them know we would pack up everything on our own, and that we would even get rid of/sell a few furnitures before the move. The quote? $~3000! Crew size 4! Estimate 8 hours. Really? It takes 4 people 8 hours to move a 1BR apartment across town? By the way, this quote also includes fuel and driving time, which their competitors do not do. Do NOT USE THIS COMPANY unless you love chaos, ZERO communication regarding your belongings and RUDE, CONDESCENDING, people when you FINALLY hear from someone after 3 days of ZERO communication after their truck breaks down in route to your drop off destination! I was left stressed out of my mind, wondering where ALL of my belongings are and if they are okay (everything I own and no courtesy call!!) and having no idea when it would be delivered!! Nobody even called me to tell me the truck broke down! The one time I was able to reach the driver...as I was waiting for his arrival, said "oh the truck broke down, someone was supposed to call you." That's all I ever got was them throwing out names of people whom were "supposed" to call me but nobody did for 3 days!! Then they can't even properly load a 10 x 10 storage unit!! Cramming a 5 x 7 $2000 mirror at the opening for it to fall upon opening the door!! And on ME!!! Inexcusable on EVERY level from start to finish! They did not even properly tag items as some were coming to a home and others to storage so I needed up with 4 items at the house that were to be in storage and vice versa in the storage! This was after being condescendingly assured that they would know what was to be dropped off where! The WORST moving experience EVER!!! And I have moved a lot!!!!! Universal Movers LLC is amazing! I used them to move my office last week which turned out to be a significant job. They arrived right on time (about 5 minutes early in fact) and went right to work. There was no fooling around with this crew - they had a job to do and they got right to it. They moved 9 desks worth of items and all the mess that comes with a 2000 sq ft office with zero issues. We had a lot of very fragile technology items that needed extra TLC and they were able to move all of it without a single item breaking. The crew was professional, respectful of our items and understood their own limitations (translation - they knew when something was too large or heavy for them to handle so they asked for help from a coworker). After the move was completed, they even helped us set up some of the larger items (e.g. conference room table) that were too big for us to handle. I was completely impressed with Antonio and the entire crew. The best part - the quote was spot on accurate for the work they did. They estimated a 7 hour move and it was 7 hours. There were no surprises at the end and we will definitely recommend them to anyone who needs a mover! read more

These guys are very competitive on price. And you get what you pay for. They did not show up on our scheduled move day. Damaged equipment, death in a family, everything on one day. Strained my credibility, really. Their terms specify a three day window for delivery. You should plan on the last possible day, and also plan on not knowing which of the three days until one day before that three day window. We found it tough to figure out when to be at the location for the delivery. Or maybe plan to camp out somewhere for three days; much less stressful. (Keep in mind the contact person for the company will quickly remind you that many if not most of their customers stay in a hotel.) This is speculative, and I think they work their employees a lot of hours. Beware of this. With us, when they got to near four PM, they must have started to just toss anything anywhere. When we started opening boxes we found many boxes unmarked, and many boxes containing items from areas unidentified on the box. I mean, when you are missing your coffee machine be sure to look in the boxes from the bedroom. We spent over a week trying to find missing stuff. Finally we have had close to $1,000 in damages and perhaps, several hundred in lost items. Was it worth the savings? Honestly I don't know. But I do know it's a false question. A business should be able to do their work promptly, and deliver a quality finished product or service at the price they quote. This company ain't that. read more

I am giving one star because they were in extreme hurry to finish the job. The crew themselves selected a day before major holiday and all they wanted was to finish asap and leave. They didn't attach the mirror to dresser saying it's very complex. Broke a part and no one ever got back to see how to fix that issue. They were extremely unprofessional. I concur with the previous reviewer. Friendly at the front end of the business but rude, condescending and dismissive at the back end. Many reassurances that they are experts at handling antiques. They are not! End of August I did multiple face time walk throughs with the scheduling person and pointed out the item that was of most concern. Sept 5th I stood by the packing moving crew and reiterated how delicate and important the heirloom antique Japanese Silk screen was to me and they assured me they would treat it like my baby. Unfortunately quite the opposite as it arrive with a hole punched through the box and the internal frame had pushed through tearing the silk . When I called to complain, Bob Sheahan implied that I had done the damage, that the screen was worth maybe $1-$100 , and that "I shouldn't get in a lather " talking the damage. October he emailed the insurance claim form and I sent it back and was assured they"would be right on it". One month later Bob is ignoring me hoping I will just go away as he sends messages through his minions . Today (Dec 1st) his messenger says that Bob offered me $250.00 ( the screen is valued at $5,000) . I will wait for their insurance company response as Bob is clueless. Bob needs customer service training or possibly a different job. As for the crew - Luis, Roberto, Jose, and Jesus you need more training re caring for real antiques and how to move them with care. Crew arrived on-time and were easy to work with. But I was very upset with how much I had to pay at the end. I have a one bedroom apartment, and I have very few inexpensive furnitures from IKEA. When I spoke to the nice lady on the phone, I was quoted for about $350 for 3 hours of work, which I felt was reasonable. However, the guys REALLY took their sweet time to move things slowly, and pushed the time to be nearly 5 hours to move from Alameda to San Bruno. I was really shocked when my final bill came to be close to $800. That was just ridiculous. My IKEA furnitures didn't even cost me that much to begin with!! I got 4 plastic containers of everything I already packed up, plus a bed, a couch, a coffee table, a desk (really just a board plus 4 legs from IKEA), a TV stand, a TV, plus a bike. Seriously, this should NOT have taken 5 hours to double my expenses!! Will not recommend this place to my friends. But I will definitely recommend this to my ex girlfriend. She totally deserves to be ripped off. read more

Advertised email put pricing for 2 guys, they turned up with 3. I moved 1BR less than 5 miles - they charged me $75.00 in fuel. They charged me 30 min for THEIR commute (~$70) (to and fro to our old and new place, NOT carrying our furniture). None of this was part of the advertised email. I moved same amount of furniture 1 year ago at HALF the price - and nothing was destroyed. I tried them because I saw good reviews here and had lost the info of my last mover. I wish I looked harder. I am moving from the Bay Area to Texas. I packed most of my own items, but had a bulky item which was an elliptical. I did some research and ultimately chose Universal Movers LLC because of the consistently positive reviews. Antonio and his team (Alex, Omar, and Eli) came on-time and found my place with no problem. I was a little worried about the logistics of getting the truck here since my complex can be confusing, but so relieved they had no issues! Once in my condo, they quickly got to work packing and loading all of my boxes. They also did a great job packing my furniture tightly. It was such a stress-free experience that I could just sit around and do my work while the guys did their thing. Hired them to move my house from northern ca to southern ca. Broke a plexiglass table top before it ever got onto the truck. Found glass in one of the bedrooms, but never figured out what was broken. At destination, antique oak table base broken in two and missing a claw foot; antique piano bench destroyed. Floor lamp destroyed. On top of that, I AM MISSING SEVERAL ITEMS: Rudy told me to use original boxes for electronics. Well, guess what: I packed my son's Xbox one in its original box (along with games) and IT DISAPPEARED. So did a 6' ladder (how does one "loose" a ladder?) Several other items were damaged and other items lost. Then I had to play "lets make a deal" with Bob for compensation of the damaged and "lost" items. Filed a police report for the Xbox one, since it was worth quite a bit. Need I say more??? I called them Wednesday for a Saturday morning move - they were not only available but the best price as well! Antonio and his partner showed up even earlier then promised. I explained what needed to be moved and they figured out the rest. They were friendly, courteous, resourceful, polite, worked very fast and took very good care of my stuff. They covered the floor and everything in blankets. It turned out to be a rainy day which is rare in Bay Area in California but there were not complaints, they were extremely professional. But I was the most impressed when they finagled my small, yet mighty heavy upright piano to the second floor of the apartment where I was moving. Boy, the staircase was narrow! It had a very sharp turn, it seemed nearly impossible to squeeze up the beast without vaseline. But they gave me a confident smile and said we'll see if we can do it. It was a sport for them, a challenge they took without hesitation! Up went the piano, I even rolled up my sleeves too to make it go better. They made sure everything was in the place I wanted it and off they went. If you hire these guys make sure you tip them generously, even with a fat tip you'll come out better then any other mover.
