The large post offices in Hilo have longer hours; the rural post offices that serve only a thousand people have reduced hours (for economic reasons) but short or no lines. Such unacceptable customer service by the clerk, trainer and supervisor. And my original issue still isn't resolved after numerous complaints online.

I've received and mailed quite a few packages and every experience is efficient, speedy, and friendly. Never have had any issue with my mail getting mixed up or late either. The post office shares the building with Papaaloa store and cafe which is definitely an added bonus. This is absolutely the heart of Hamakua coast-nothing else is around for miles in either direction! Since the cafe has opened plus an electric vehicle charging station was installed in the little parking lot, parking can be a little tight in front, but there's plenty of spots just down the road. The current and only employee I ever see working there, Dasha, has been incredibly helpful and patient with me as I prepare to leave the area. I will definitely miss this little gem!

I do recommend a visit, it's also the Federal Building. It was designed by architect Henry Whitfield (Dale Carnegie's brother in law) in 1915 near the very beginning of U.S. postal service on the islands. Maybe the USPS is one positive in an ocean of colonial oppression. It was one of the first reinforced concrete buildings on this island (local architecture used less permanent materials)/ The grounds are lovely using lava rock for walls and local plants for decoration. The tall palms were planted by the American Legion after WWI to honor Hawai'ian citizens who perished in that war. I got stamps here to put on postcards, but I'll bet hardly anyone reading this knows what that means.

The PO box prices have gone up considerably yet they've cut staff. The region is one of the fastest growing in the entire state yet they only have one person behind the counter more often than not. The line's an hour long, more often than not, which is especially hard on elderly and injured people who don't have someone else to do errands for them. At least make an automated process efficient and transparent. Even though the website says you can apply for a PO box at that location in person, you are denied the ability to do so in person. The website will say there are 3 boxes open, but when you go there and ask they'll say there aren't any. Months down the road, the site will still say there are 3 open, and when you try to reserve it some error happens after you've spent your lunch break filling out the form to get to that point, and that was after standing in line to be told you have to do it online. So, you have to go stand in line in to talk to them again. A few months from now, I bet it will still say that there are 3 boxes available....
