I was really excited to try this place out, and I was not disappointed. The inside ambiance is great, they did a fantastic job when they redid it. I enjoyed everything I ate, and they had a nice selection of beers as well. The only thing I would say wasn't outstanding were the Parmesan pomme frites. They were good French fries, but didn't taste anything like parmesan. Parking is a little tough as the lot is small. I'd just recommend grabbing street parking if you can. Even on a Thursday night it was very busy, so making a reservation may be a good idea. I'll definitely be back soon! read more

This restaurant is a welcome addition to the neighborhood! It's decor is a great combination of rustic, modern, and pretty minimalist, which is refreshing. A group of four of us went on the second night that they were open, and we were thrilled as how delicious everything was even so close to their initial opening. For apps we ordered the dry rubbed wings (delicious!) and house made potato chips that came with a Dijon sour cream dip. The chips and dip were SO good, but $5 for a small pint glass of potato chips seems pretty steep for maybe one potato's worth of chips. A bowl or basket would be a more appropriate size for the price... not that it stopped us from ordering multiple orders since they were so delicious! For dinner we tried four different things, but some of my favorites were the two flatbreads- the Dubliner and the Sweet and Savory. They were great! It was my first time at Union Straw. The food was disappointing. The chicken wings were a starter and were ordered "dry rub" which was a big mistake. The blend of spices was NOT a melody of good flavor. The substandard wings (quantity of 8) were small and dry for a whopping price of $14.99. It was like throwing money away into the wind. For the main course was the "Maple Bourbon Burger" which was the size of a hockey puck, cold, and greasy. The toppings were skimpy due to the lack of landscape of the burger. The french fries were also cold and obviously out of a bag from the freezer. The price tag for this subpar meal was $19.00. Honestly, a fast food chain would have been more substantive. I had a Tito's vodka martini with olives which was simply average. The olives were like rubber without pimento so I left them in the glass. I am unfortunately clumsy and knocked over three quarters of the drink with my hand. The camera footage would attest to it. The waiter delivered another drink, but still charged for two drinks. I inquired about the check and the waiter said that he had no way of measuring how much I drank from the first martini that was spilled (which was clearly caught on the camera adjacent from my table.). The waiter very reluctantly consulted with his supervisor who did reverse the charge. Because I was with a friend, I did not have the liberty to express my dissatisfaction to the workers who whizzed by the table inquiring about the taste of the food. Ordered a salad, GF flatbread pizza and a turkey burger, waited 55 minutes to have to ask to have them pack up our food. The tater tots were severely burned, the GF pizza burned and the salad was missing the chicken and soggy. We spent so much for a quick dinner date and food was horrible along with the wait time. We don't get out often and was a great place to go not so much anymore, sad as there aren't many options to choose from. Came to this place on our 2nd date and we ordered the Jackfruit tacos (since I am vegetarian) and we ABSOLUTELY loved them. We were planning on going out tonight and I noticed that they took the tacos off the menu. Oh no! Now I have no options (aside from the flatbread pizza which is kinda lame). I truly wanted to love the place, but nothing quite worked out while we were there. We were introduced to our waitress who said she was new and training on the job, no problems there whatsoever, until we realized the first/ more experienced waitress would not once check on us for the rest of our meal. Our trainee waitress fell short of expectations, took long to serve us and our food was served colder than expected after sitting on the counter for a while before it was served to us. As for their menu, the food was alright. However, I found myself disappointed at the lack of acknowledgement on the menu that one of the dishes we order was extremely spicy. We kept trying to wave our waitress to get more water and a milder sauce and we got very little response from her. I really wish I could have loved this place since I think the ambiance and location had lots of potential. We ordered the Caramelized Onion and Truffle Mushroom Tart, the Uptown Anthem cocktail, Turducken Burger, Duck Grilled Cheese, and Fried Cheese Curds. We really enjoyed the drinks and the entrees. They have a changing seasonal menu with a few staples. Great appetizers, good for sharing. I've had many of their main courses. I keep going back to their Mac n cheese and BBQ. Recently had them combined... what a delight. Their drinks are my favorite. An innovative rotating seasonal cocktail list. Always well made. A few months ago they even partnered with an animal charity with a special portion of their menu to give back. I love that! Overall a really nice place. Great Pub food, atmosphere, and service. The rest not so much. I find myself really torn over this review. Union Straw probably has the best food within a 15 mile radius. And some of the best BBQ in New England. But these aren't exactly staggering achievements. On the extraordinarily positive side the house potato chips and cheese curds were out of this world. And the BBQ, burger and bone-in wings were quite good. But my daughter made the mistake of ordering pasta at a pub - never a good idea. My wife had a pork special that was just OK. And the only flavorful part of the watermelon salad was the balsamic glaze - and that was too sweet. The featured cocktails were fantastic - I had an old fashioned and my wife a paloma. And the beer and cider were quite good as well. The service was excellent and the atmosphere wonderful - outdoor dining with heaters. But if we had it to do all over again we would avoid the entrees and pick ourselves a five star meal. read more

I have been here a few times, and it has always been pretty good. I took my wife here on 10/02 (which was a Monday) for our wedding anniversary. The first sign of trouble is I ordered the "Smoked Mezcal Old Fashioned." This is a drink I normally would not order, but I thought it was cool that it comes out covered with smoke on the inside of the drink. When the drink came out, there was no smoke - the waitress (who was super nice) indicated they ran out of butane, and there was no smoke in my drink. I reluctantly took the drink, and didn't want to be fussy because it was our anniversary dinner. For entree's I ordered the pork belly with scallops; the portion was small - but the taste was spot on. My wife ordered the salmon; which came out raw. We notified the waitress, who brought it back to the kitchen. 20 minutes later it came back out - this time the skin of the salmon was charred/burnt - but it was still raw in the center. We again notified the waitress who apologized and said she would have it cooked; but at this point we decided the kitchen was having a tough night and declined. The waitress said she would send over the manager, we did not ask for the manager. The person who came over I am pretty sure was not the manager, and was another waitress; I state this because she was filling water and taking orders from other sections - the manager/owner appeared to be in back handling paperwork. The manager/waitress apologized said they would take the salmon off the bill (which they should have because it wasn't cooked/or ate) and asked if she could do anything else. We politely declined and asked for the check. Union Straw had been in our rotation of 4 to 5 restaurants we go to locally for a nice night out; we have dropped them from our rotation. Maybe the kitchen was having a rough night, maybe because it was a Monday or maybe they are now cutting corners, there are so many other places around we will not take our chances moving forward. read more

They try to our unique twist on classic dishes and it just messes up the flavor of that dish. My lobster roll had a sauce and herbs that messed up the taste of a good classic lobster roll. The elote loco was horrible, coming from someone who's had legit street corn from the Mexican elote man. They sadly messed up the corn but putting, I think feta on there. And they grilled or baked it to nastiness. The rest of my party wasn't too thrilled either. Besides the weirdness of the food, it's a nice ambiance to sit and talk with friends though. I have been many times to have dinner/breakfast and just apps and drinks at the bar. The last option is probably the best to enjoy what they do well. Breakfast was ok but too many times, the dinners have underwhelmed. This past Monday I went with two friends and we each paid $48. for mixed quality of food. I ordered the shrimp po'boy with a side salad. My sandwich was quite delicious. I was happy with my meal and the salad serving was very generous. One friend was excited to try the pulled pork taco board- the presentation was cool - piles of taco ingredients on a slab of wood to make your own. The taco shells were chewy, the cheese offered is goat cheese, the lettuce was Romaine and the salsa looked like home made but made with pale tomatoes in giant chunks. She didn't finish it. My other friend ordered the mussel appetizer and a French Onion Soup. The mussels were ok- a little small and the broth was not very complicated in flavor. The onion soup was very salty and not appealing either and she didn't finish. My friends had room for dessert and the harvest cake caught their eye bc they love candy corn. It arrived looking and tasting more like a muffin, a day old muffin at that overcooked and dry, and no candy corn. Apparently they had run out. I feel like I have given Union Straw many chances to shine and they miss the mark 70% of the time. If it were priced more reasonably, I wouldn't have as high expectations and would understand them faltering here and there. The server was wonderful and cheerful. Perfect place to meet friends halfway between Boston and Providence. It is easy access to 95. I took a chance and really enjoyed what we found. The menu is very varied and there was something for everyone. the chicken and waffles were very sweet kind of like dinner and just heard all rolled into one dish. That salads were good, as was the French onion soup. The large pretzel was very large and easy to share. We did not order dessert but the table next to us did and it looked incredibly decadent. My first time here and we went on a Tuesday night with my toddler. The atmosphere was amazing--relaxed and rustic with the perfect foodie vibe to it. I am giving it 5 stars because I feel that compared to comparable restaurants in the area this exceeds expectations. The waitstaff was incredible. Very welcoming and attentive to our needs as a family with a young child. My daughter has never raved so much about a restaurant before! I had the 1/2 chicken with garlic mashed and Swiss chard. It was flavorful and beautifully presented. It was a tad undersalted for my taste but I would much rather add my own salt than have something overly salty so I did not mind. My daughter had the Mac and cheese which impressively was very good (I would have eaten it myself!) and the banana toffee cake was incredible. My mom got some pretty awesome cocktails.
