My daughter and I took the metro from Grand Central Station in New York to the Union Station in New Haven, and back. The ride took longer than we had expected, about 2 hours with the multiple stops. The ride was rather bumpy in some parts and I didn't like how they did not show a visual of when/where the next stops would be. You had to rely on hearing the conductor announce in the overhead, which was not very clear. It's a convenient option for transportation that is considerably cheaper than a car rental or Uber, that's for sure. I paid $82.50 for our roundtrip tickets.

Very pretty station and they have Dunkin' and Subway inside that is very convenient. The service was pretty fast as well. I think during the day time waiting for trains inside was not too bad, but at night I will be worried, because there's no closed areas for people to wait for their trains. Anybody can access these benches. The biggest problem I had is that one person works there was super super creepy. He was circling around me and eventually seated next to me wanted to talk. He is in uniform so I know he works there. Very creepy guy, freaks me out. He's short, asian looking, and not have much hair. I had to wait for my train elsewhere just to run away from him. The station should train their staff especially teach them it is wrong to harass passengers. If you're young and travel alone be aware!!! I will never go there by myself again. Terrible and very creepy experience!!

Wonderfully large and historic station in New Haven. I've traveled out of here all my life, and never had difficulty. There's plenty of parking right next door in the garage. The station serves many different rail lines, from Metro North down to NYC, Amtrak and their various routes, and a few others. Cities accessible include Boston, DC, and states like Vermont and Florida (I think!). It's very convenient to have a station with many connections here in the New Haven area. The station is well patrolled at night, plenty of open space and good amount of food options and stores. I'm happy to have this near my hometown.

I felt like Goldilocks at this train station. I live in an area where the train station is TOO SMALL, like two benches, no personality and a coffee cart. Then NYC, is TOO BIG, hectic and way overwhelming. But New Haven Union Station is JUST RIGHT! It's medium sized, has a couple of places to eat, a Subway, a Sbarro, Dunkin' Donuts, a newsstand, a vending area and a snack shop. It's a pretty station! Nice architectural design, lots of wooden benches, big beaclocks, gorgeous ceilings and art noveau décor. The main station was clean but the restrooms could use some attention. Easy ticket machines and windows open for more personal service. There was a charging station kiosk but people were sitting on the floor next to the outlets, maybe put a bench nearby. It was convenient having an Avis rental car office on the premises. Our transition from the train to the escalator to the station to the rental place was flawless. No wait time and easy. While my hubby picked up the car, we grabbed some pizza which hit the spot after a long train ride. As far a train station fairy tales go, this one had a happy ending! Goldilocks approves!

Main train station in New Haven, there's a u-shaped driveway in the front of the building for pick up and drop-off, with a parking garage directly to the left (NE) of the building. Inside the main waiting area is essentially one large rectangular space with a number of long wooden benches running parallel in the center. Ticket windows/machines line one wall with a smattering of small shops/convenience stores across on the opposite side of the space. The train arrival/departure times are displayed on a large electronic sign-board, and the walkway to trains is right below this display. Down the escalator and towards the right thru a corridor lined with metallic strips, stairways extend upwards to each platform, bringing travelers up to the platforms where they can board once the train arrives. Overall maintenance was pretty standard compared to most public transit facilities, the vaulted ceiling and long benches give this place an air of respectability, reminding of times when trains were the main form of long distance transportation.

I don't want to jinx it but super easy and swift ride here, 4th floor parking available in the garage. A bit of a line for tickets but moved quickly, $71 for two round trip tix from New Haven to NYC. On time, and affordable alternative to driving with less chaos.

I'm here pretty often and it's a very nice station. A decent selection of food and snacks for your trip. Well placed ticketing machines, organized and large digital train station screen so you never need to squint and pretty friendly and helpful staff. The only reason I'm giving four stars however is because of the parking prices. They seem way to high.

Not really much to say about Union Station. Nice place to wait at for your train with plenty of eating options. My only gripe would be the birds that fly around you while your trying to eat indoor!

    Perfect seat on train. 06/14/18

Ask the Community - Union Station

Arriving Monday morning on the Valley Flyer and leaving on the Northeast Regional in a little more than 10 minutes. Will it be difficult timewise to figure out where we are going and getting there in that time frame?

No the board is overhead, and the track you need to get to will be shown. Also the station is not very big, and the windows are always staffed.

Can I park for a week anywhere near Union station area?

Union station has a parking garage right next to it. Can't recall the rates off-hand but I think you can check website for it. Can park as long as you want - so long as you can pay for it!

I need to travel w my small dog. Can I?

Yes I believe you can bring small dogs, you just need to make sure you have a crate or a leash to accommodate them just in case. I think you can take them in and out of the crate but they cannot wander around or be left unattended. They also cannot… Read more

What's the parking situation here? Is there free parking? From Friday to Sunday?

There is no free parking unless you find something in the city (they don't check meters on Sundays). Depending on how long you are staying wherever you are going, it might be worth it to find parking completely offsite and Uber over to the station.… Read more

Are there any car rental counters in or outside of the train station?

Yes, there is an Avis for sure and I think there are a couple of others.

The Amtrak employees are AMAZING. I've now taken several trips with this same crew, from DC to Baltimore to New Haven. They are SOLID people you feel safe with. For example, I fell asleep once and missed my stop. The conductor/employee helped me off and to find the train to get on to get back to my intended destination. This time around, the employee/conductor told me that I could get off in CT at State Street, which is what was on my ticket, but I would have to stay on the train much longer because they would have to turn around and re-align the trains. He gave me the tip that most passengers get off at Union station (SO close to State Street, it's a negligible distance). Then he took enough care to come back by again to tell me that Union was the next station if I wanted to get off. The cafe car was also wonderful. His credit card machine stopped working. I told him that I had cash, but made the joke that I didn't look forward to walking the LONG walk from the cafe car back to business class to get that cash. He offered to COME TO ME to get the cash later, and he did! Tipped him majorly! Business class is more expensive than coach, we are talking two to three times the price, but you get to choose your seat. On this particular line, it's never been full and I've never had anyone sitting next to me. It's worth it to me, but for some, it may not be. Cafe car has plenty of drinks and snacks. Sandwiches, cheese and cracker trays, alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. Nothing fancy, but gets the job done. But I can't get over how these guys have seemingly looked out for me and taken care of me on my many trips up and down the rails.

The Amtrak on the way back though left a lot to be desired. I unfortunately had to sit across from people and the girl sat with her shoes off on the seats and nobody said anything to her. (The trains almost always originate at Union Station.) So you drive to the parking garage attached to Union Station (Union Garage) as you have for years and years but now they simply close the garage in the morning regardless of whether there is parking available or not. SO you drive to the only other parking garage, which is only a block and half down the street, Gateway Garage (which you will find is in NO directory or parking guide to NH), wind around to the entrance where you are forced to make a tight right-hand turn into the garage--and as you make that turn the posted parking prices are on the inside of that right-hand turn so you don't see them until you are LEAVING the garage from the other direction. So you park your car, find an exit and hurry over to Union Station to catch your train. You return 26 hours later to pick up your car and know parking should be about $22 dollars. Instead, you are presented with a tab of $36! For heaven's sake, that's more than the round-trip ticket to New York 70 miles away! So beware, all, this is a complete trap and utter rip-off! If you take the train into NYC once a week the "bargain" is to buy a WHOLE MONTHLY PASS at Union Garage for $95 because then they have to let you in the garage even when its always closed! "Wow," I said to the poor guy at the cashier booth at Gateway Garage, "more than I pay for parking in Manhattan." "That's what everybody says," he said, taking my credit card. "So what do normal people do?" I asked him. "Sometimes they walk to the office over there and just start screaming," he said hopefully (but tactfully). (Jobs in Central CT are extremely hard to get)
