Great little sandwich shop! It's very popular at noontime. I took a break from my 4 hour long painting class upstairs in the Torpedo Factory to snag a bite. My timing was good, because I arrived right before a work group of maybe 10 people or so came into place their orders. In addition to a substantive sandwich menu, which includes both hot and cold sandwiches, there's plenty of beverage (including wine) and snack selections. Wearing an oil paint-smudged apron (FYI: the reality is that you're still going to get paint on your clothes even wearing an apron), I aptly ordered the Torpedo Artist. The Torpedo Artist is a hot Panini-like sandwich. You can select your type of meat, cheese and toppings. By default it includes lettuce, sweet peppers and deli oil. My sandwich was well-crafted with plenty of turkey and Swiss cheese. However, I didn't especially like this sandwich. I wish I had asked them to hold the deli oil because it was overly pungent with oregano. All I could taste in my sandwich was oregano. But older and wiser now, I know in the future that if I have them hold the deli oil, I'll end up with a great and tasty sandwich. read more

A fantastic sandwich location. I love a good sandwich! I was able to place an order for pick up just before I got on the train to head back. Brilliant! I will definitely for this again on my next trip. I ordered a BLT on multigrain, and a PBJ w/honey drizzle on sourdough. The PBJ is off the kids menu. I'll ask for extra peanut butter and jelly so it's to my liking. I couldn't tell if there was honey on it, it could have been. The BLT was fantastic. I loved that it was not oiled high with all the ingredients. A simple sandwich. It fit the bill and didn't over fill me. A true classic. The multi grain bread was the best! I need to find out where that is from. It was that good. I hope I'm able to try the tuna fish and the egg salad sandwiches sometime they look delish! The staff were quiet, but got the job done. Stopped by and had some good food here. We ended up eating out on the water and the wait was not long at all. Kevin had the riverside picnic which he liked alot. OMFG!!! Just amazing little spot servicing sandwiches that punch you in the face with flavor. I had the Italian hoagie and my husband had the roast beef and provolone on sour dough. Both sandwiches were explosive. The hot and sweet peppers added that extra umph taking them over the edge. Paired with a local lager for hubby and vodka mule for me our lunch was more than we could have asked for. Sitting at the bar looking out on the street added that little extra something that makes you feel like you're in your old neighborhood, wherever that is and the service was friendly and fast. read more

The clam chowder was very delicious especially on the cool rainy day I visited this new location in Old Town. They don't make their soups here, but they come from a vendor. Even still, it was delicious. Sandwiches looked good, and this spot offers various snack and drinks. On a perfectly sunny day, strolling around Alexandria, we stumbled upon Union Sandwich Co. in the Torpedo Factory and decided to grab a bite. We got a turkey sandwich, a roast beef sandwich, and an arugula salad. All freshly prepared by the friendly cooks behind the counter, we also got a few bottles of drinks from the coolers in the waiting area. We didn't want to sit inside on such a perfect day, so we grabbed the food and sat outside by the fountain. The staff obliged us and provided plastic utensils and napkins. I absolutely loved the food at this place. I was passing through Alexandria after work and was so happy that I decided to make the detour. It was a busy area, but I found some street parking. Limited seating - about 8 seats against a counter and three tables just out front in covered area. But if you take your food out to the waterfront there are plenty of places to sit and watch the water including a shaded pavilion with a dozen tables and low walls made for sitting. A quality deli right in the heart of Old Town. Really liked the 1919 Italian with hot peppers. The meats were sliced right in front of me and the bread was perfectly crusty. Today I ordered from Uber eats, the Potomac club sandwich and the Cobb salad. I can't attest to the salad as I haven't eaten it yet, but the Potomac club was absolutely outstanding! I almost didn't order from Union Sandwich company because I thought it's just a sandwich right? But this sandwich was outstanding. The bread was delicious, the avocado spread was significant, the meat and tomatoes and lettuce all tasted so fresh. I don't think you can go wrong with this gem of a little deli! Like tough bread, old baloney gas station sandwich terrible. What's more surprising is that the Italian is even more expensive than the other sandwich (on Grubhub). This is a great place to get a sandwich right off the Alexandria waterfront. My group was walking from Jone's Park to the south along the waterfront and decided to get a meal. There are many choices for food in the Alexandria city proper and a few right along the water. As you can tell from it's name, this is a sandwich shop in the corridor of a larger building. It has windows along both sides of the store making it very light and bright inside the store. Seating is limited with only a small bar with about 4 seats at the back. We chose to sit by the public tables near waterfront park. You order at the counter closest to the door. The menu is located on the back wall behind the counter and is a set of sandwiches ranging in price from about $11 to $13. I got the Roast beef and Blue sandwich. The food was prepared as we waited and was ready within about 10 minutes. It was one of the best sandwiches I have had with good bread, excellent roast beef and real crumbles. The store was clean. The staff was nice and it was a pleasant experience. Overall, I plan to visit here again to try more of their sandwiches. I hope you will too. read more
