They were wonderful. We slipped in and added our name to the waitlist (call ahead to add if you can). They gave us a drink as we waited and eventually we were seated at our table, drinks in hand with us. The bartender is great. She is so knowledgeable and inviting that you love interacting with her. Go with her recommendations for wine pairings with your food. The large entrees are still smaller portions, which is what we prefer, and their pasta is made in house. I met my best friend here up for a late night dinner and was really impressed by the cute, homey vibe, unpretentious + knowledgable service, and of course great food and wine. We came for a late dinner so there was only one server in the room with several tables but this woman was an absolute star. Didn't break a sweat, had drinks on the table and food served at time warp speed, and was just overall so kind and attentive all around. I did a wine flight + king salmon + chanterelle tart and was immediately transported back to France. If I lived nearby, I would make this my neighborhood bistro and cheese shop. Charming. warm, welcoming ambiance located on King Street closer to Masonic Temple than the Potomac. The wines offered are European. Large selection including option of wine flights. The cheese!! OMG!! The plate includes fruit, crostini and apple spread. I added honey. I chose the Brads Chèvre (goat with spice), manchego, and belmont cheddar. All there were surprisingly delicious!! A great comfy wine and cheese shop in old town Alexandria. Came in on a Sunday afternoon and was able to get seated right away. Around 5p it started to pick up and there were no empty seats available. Which impacted the service it took us forever to get the check. I think they are just short staffed and are overwhelmed. The actual service we got was great. Our waitress gave us a whole bunch of recommendations on wines cheeses to try. The wine was very delicious and I recommend getting a flight. I've visited a few times, although this is my first review here. Prices are on the higher side, but that's to be expected for a French bistro-type experience. I perused the wine menu and asked for a few recommendations to go with my roast duck. The variety they offer is interesting, including wines from regions I never otherwise have tried. I like how the wine menu is well laid-out so everything is easily explained. I really enjoyed the duck; the cheese plates are also really good. While technically it's a different store, I also liked being able to go to their sister-store wineshop next to them and get a tasting of wines that were being sampled. read more

Ordered charcuterie, wine & entrees. Waitress didn't write anything down. One of the cheeses was wrong (but turned out to be our favorite on the board, so a happy mistake!)... But then we just never got our entree. Like, ever. We were being patient, figuring the kitchen was understaffed, and since we weren't otherwise being ignored by the waitstaff. About 45 minutes after we sat down we overheard our waitstaff tell a couple that had just walked in that the kitchen was closed. They have an open design so we looked over and could see the cooks cleaning up. She came over to check on us again; we mentioned we were still waiting for our entrees. She looked surprised, like she had forgotten that we ordered entrees (obviously), but came back to the table blaming it on a "system glitch" (ummm, sure). They did say they would have somebody in the kitchen get to work on our orders right away, but it was already after 9:00 and we had already decided we'd just grab something quick somewhere else instead. I'm not sure what other people think would have been an appropriate resolution, but I thought the one they offered was pretty weak. We only had two glasses + the charcuterie platter, so there wasn't a ton to comp, but a singular glass of wine when we were never served our food seemed like a miss. I've worked in restaurants and was not a perfect server, but they just didn't really do anything to earn any goodwill and we won't be giving them another shot. Anyway... They get two stars since we ended up having to get dinner somewhere else. The charcuterie was fine; only two pieces of each type of cheese means that they're not good for splitting with not than two people. If it's company policy not to let the waitstaff write down orders you really should rethink that. Nobody is ever impressed with that; it just seems to be needlessly pretentious and weird. read more

I was in town visiting friends, but this spot was very busy. The hostess was beyond friendly, and actually suggested other neighborhood spots we should try. Since she was SO kind, I came back to La Fromagerie the next night, and the same hostess remembered me!! It was less busy, so I was able to immediately get a table. We have been here several times and have NEVER had a bad meal. I don't even think we've had something we didn't like. We tend to concentrate on the charcuterie. The selection is awesome. I also highly recommend the baby radishes when in season. These are delicious. The wine selection is excellent and if you aren't a wine connoisseur simply ask your server. They have never steered us wrong. The atmosphere is open and relaxed. They do not do reservations but we have never had a long wait for a table. read more

We popped in for a late dinner after a long travel day. Service was excellent. The food was wonderful. We had olives and gigante beans as appetizer. Salad course: the beet salad is WONDERFUL. Must try if you like beets. Also enjoyed the dandelion salad. It was delicious. Our main course of the filet was perfection (We are picky about beef). My Risotto with stinging nettles and oyster mushrooms came out piping hot, perfectly cooked. I also want to say that we truly enjoyed the European type service. It wasn't rushed and was perfectly timed. Appreciated the owner?/manager? having the neighboring diners stop FaceTiming their small child on full volume too lol. So reasonably priced too. I had the Niçoise salad and the tuna was canned tuna. Didn't expect that. But that wasn't the worse for me. I was sitting alone at the bar. There were 2 bartenders. One took care of me . She didn't engage much since she was also taking care of clients sitting at tables. The other bartender didn't move from talking to 3 patrons. It's not easy to eat alone but this place takes the cake for making feel totally ignored. I couldn't wait to leave. The 2 bartenders were also sort of flirting and talking to each other so closely . It was uncomfortable. The majority of the clients seemed to be regulars and had great service, with small banters and welcoming attitude . And then there is the non regular and single , feeling like the 3rd wheel. Unprofessional to say the least . Won't go back again. read more

We have been here many many times and it really is a favorite of ours in Old Town Alexandria! The food, while small, is always amazing and they have new items every season which makes it always great to come back! The cheese and meats as well are to die for, and we always let them choose which ones and they ALWAYS do a fantastic job. We know many of the servers, and they are truly knowledge about their wines, giving recommendations, asking if we need anything else, etc. Class act for the whole team, from the owners to the waitstaff everyone we have dealt with is great. And the ambiance... it's casual but very nice, not too crowded at all, never too loud, and never a bad time! We love the monthly wine flights and the wine store next door (which is owed by the same people!) and while we haven't been back in a couple months, we cant wait to come back soon! read more

We've attempted to go here twice, both times we stood at the door for over 10 minutes waiting for someone to acknowledge us. The first time we left. The second time we were eventually seated but then waited another 15 minutes to even get water. They came by and asked what we wanted to order and I expressed frustration for not even being served the most basic item (we watched them serve other tables that came in after us with menus, water, and actual attention). The server told us we could eat somewhere else.... So we did. Never in my life has this happened to me. I run a hospitality business in Old Town and I will continue to discourage our guests from attending this place. read more

Let's start with the positive. The cheese and wine selection is very good. Music and general ambiance is a nice addition to this side of Old Town. That said, the service is absolutely abysmal. Don't get me wrong, I love to be leisurely, but it took waving down a waitress to actually get seated and then once we did another ten minutes to place an order. First world problems. A second glass of wine took an Act of Congress. Two hours later and we're going elsewhere to find glass three. Lesson: don't believe the monthly jobs report. Short-staffing still exists! read more

The charcuterie and wine were fine, but this was such a strange and unpleasant experience. I cannot recommend going to La Fromagerie. Does the owner make them stay later open later than they'd like, and certain staff are resentful about it and take it out on customers? Unless you're a regular or if you fit a particular approved-by-management mold, please go elsewhere. Nothing "happened," but I walked out of there after spending quite a bit of money feeling, oh--why did I go there? I was apparently soooo unwelcome. I thought it was just an oversight when I was not greeted when I walked in. After a while, I noticed that the staff mainly interacted with the two couples at the bar. One (darker haired) was cordial--it did seem as though there was tension among the staff and he would not normally be the one to serve people at the bar...or something. When a large table of young women came in--and this was well before official closing time--the staff stood there like deer in highlights. Someone must have gone over to give them menus/get orders but after that, I didn't see any of them interact with them after that. I was one of the few people at the bar and I could barely get them to say hello. At one point later--still with about 8 customers there--I felt someone staring at me. I look over, and it's the fair-haired person behind the bar, and he is staring blankly at me. How bizarre. read more

The food options look great, but we chose the cheese & charcuterie option and had a tough time deciding. Bottom line, yes it was a little in the pricey side, but it was the freshest & tasty food I've had in a long time. You get what you pay for. If you like to pay a lot for salt and small portions then this is the place for you. It's a bad sign when you have to switch back to your cheese appetizer to get the bitter salt flavor out of your mouth from the main course. Paid $30 for a bite of duck and salt. I've posted reviews elsewhere and wasn't going to bother with yelp, but then I received the attached response from the owner via email. I've never received such a rude response. Context: I received a curt/rude response via email from the owner after inquiring about their hours. Online and on the door at the shop, the opening hours are listed as 11:30am. I stopped by the shop at 11:45am last weekend and it was closed. After emailing twice to get updated hours, all I received was "2pm". No apology after going all the way to store, I didn't receive a response until a week later when I followed up, and the times online are still incorrect. Seems like basic customer service to let people know when you're open and to care when someone goes out of the way to try and visit your store. read more

The service was great, and so was the ambiance. We spent $60 bucks here for a very, very small snack, no drinks. First, we ordered the fresh tomato salad, but bare bones, hardly worth $16. It was tiny, like a very small side salad. Maybe add more fresh mozzarella and some nice bread to make that price point work? We then ordered a charcuterie platter. We received some super thinly sliced pieces of two different kinds of cheeses and enough salumi to give a small dog a tiny treat. The bread that accompanied the "platter" was so wafer-thin you could see through it. There were one or two random figs on the platter and a smallish container of an unidentified chutney of some sort, as well as 6 to 10 random tiny slices of peppers the size of a flea ....do better! read more
