Capo Italian Deli - Old Town Alexandria I reviewed our new Old Town neighbor - Capo Italian Deli - early in 2026. Time for an update. The deli is outstanding. Taking up a tiny footprint on the N. Washington Avenue thoroughfare, a few seconds from King Street, the deli delivers both hot and cold deli entrees, soft drinks, and salads. There's maybe half a dozen tables inside and a couple of tables outside, but from what I have seen thus far, most of the trade is with carry-out service, drawing from the excellent reputation Capo brought with it as it arrived in Old Town (the restaurant has siblings in Shaw NW, and Western Market in the District, Tyson's Corner in Vienna, VA, Annapolis and Potomac, MD). Fresh Philly rolls for those seeking a traditional hero sandwich, with go-to seasonings and all of the essential protein groups. My favorite is a large half roast beef half turkey with lettuce, tomato, and mayo (I skip the Italian dressing, which is part of the default, and I skip the cheese). I can and have made this $18 sandwich last three meals (so I ask them to cut the sandwich into three pieces), and the ingredients stay fresh for the next 24 hours. The last time I did this the sandwich fed me from 4:45 a.m. to 9 p.m., as I served as an election officer at one of Alexandria's polling places. Neat, trim, and completely satisfying. Just a point of concern: given its location, the opportunity to double-park while picking up an order seems to be just too tempting. This location, however, cannot over the long term sustain double-parkers. The deli is about 100 feet from the intersection of King Street and N. Washington Street. There is a dedicated lane for cars seeking to park adjacent to the deli. And then there are two northbound lanes on N. Washington Street. That's it - just two lanes serving one of the busiest intersections in Old Town. If a delivery-service car pulls up alongside one of the parked cars, all hell will break loose by drivers who suddenly find a delivery vehicle double-parking in front of Capo, leaving but one northbound lane open for however long it takes for the delivery agent to gather the order and beat it out of there. This happens with remarkable frequency, starting at about 11 a.m. and running throughout the day. That's not going to make good neighbors of Capo's nearby shops. Alexandria Parking has its work cut out for it, but here the rule prohibiting double-parking has to be enforced - it's both a safety issue and an issue of common courtesy. Doesn't matter if you think you'll just be in and out of the deli in seconds. We know it doesn't work that way, not always, and here - not even often. More often than not the double-parker will be creating a traffic hazard just by parking alongside a parked car in front of the deli. Please, don't do this. read more

This review is based solely on the customer service I received over the phone. I had placed a $62 order through DoorDash and chose Capo even though there are plenty of other deli spots nearby, because they normally make really good sandwiches. Unfortunately, the customer service this time was extremely disappointing. I called with a simple question about the bread since I have braces and needed something soft. The person who answered the phone was rude and dismissive, acting as if my call was an inconvenience. When I asked which bread was the softest, he cut me off to say they were "super busy" and could only change the bread on one sandwich, not both. I asked again for clarification, and he continued sounding irritated and uninterested in helping. He repeated that they had a line of people and needed to know which one sandwich I wanted to change. For the amount I paid, the lack of basic courtesy and willingness to answer a straightforward question was unacceptable. This will be my last time ordering from Capo in Alexandria, VA. read more

I think I just got the wrong thing here. I ordered the Italian beef sub which is roast beef, pecorino/mozzarella, sauteed onions and garlic, and marinara sauce. Nothing about the sandwich stood out or was good, it just...existed. There was no real flavor to anything; the most "flavorful" part was the marinara. Unless you really like roast beef, I'd avoid this one. I'll go back and try something else because I'm sure it was just that sandwich. read more

Capo Italian Deli is a small deli located in Old Town. I believe they have other locations in DC and Virginia. I have had the California cheesesteak and the Italian sub as well as the pasta salad. The pasta salad is not worth the money, but I do like that they asked if I wanted the dressing on the salad or on the side. The subs are served on a seeded roll. I am not usally one who puts lettuce, tomato on a cheesesteak, but I would give the California cheesesteak a 9/10. The Italian sub was also pretty good. I was impressed that you can even add Italian dressing to the sub. The inside has a small seating area and my order was ready in a decent amount of time. I believe they do offer other wraps, salads and breakfast options. read more

Just about the best sub shop in Old Town. The sandwiches are delicious and well made. We always order online and our subs are always ready on time! As for ambiance, it's a walk up style sandwich shop, so nothing fancy but certainly welcoming. read more

I miss having great sub shops nearby and Capo really fills that need. The staff here is very friendly and helpful. It's tiny inside, but there are a few counter seats, tables, and some outdoor seating. I ordered fries and an eggplant parm sub (forgot to take a photo), along with a blood orange San Pellegrino. One of my all-time favorites meals, anywhere, TBH. Everything was delicious. The bread is good and there was plenty of eggplant. Plus, I had leftovers, which is even better. I had a bunch of class pass points to use and saw this restaurant on there. I had previously ordered from the DC location for my family but hadn't actually tasted it myself. My oh my, the only disappointment is that I never tried them sooner! This food is made fresh while you're there and everyone is so kind. Hands down the best chicken parm sandwich I've had in years. The bread, chicken, sauce, and cheese are perfectly proportioned, the bread holds up well without being tough, the chicken is tender enough to bite through, and there is enough sauce and cheese without being sloppy. Italian combo sandwich was also well done; same excellent sesame roll bread, but packed with cold cuts instead. Also highly recommend the fries, they managed to stay crispy even after a ten minute walk home, and seemingly would have lasted longer without getting soggy. read more

Freshly sliced meat, confetti-like lettuce and a plethora or veggie and sauce options made this sub delicious. What made it superb? I had meanest craving for a deli sandwich and this place had just what I needed. I ordered the 11-inch maple turkey sandwich with a bunch of add-ons. Roast beef. Basil aioli. Fresh mozzarella. Arugula. All on Italian seeded bread. With chips and San Pellegrino Limonata, I paid a little over 30 bucks. It's a lot for a sandwich, I know, but all the add-ons made it totally worth it. While I was waiting for my food, I also noticed that they sold cannoli made to order, So I ordered one of those as well. They offer large and small sizes, but of course I had to get the large. In addition to an absolutely delicious filling, I loved how soft and crumbly the shell was. It was firm enough to hold its shape, but it crumbled beautifully as I've been into it. My only complaint is that I had to repeat my order at least five times to the cashier, which eventually became a little irritating. She seemed to be new so I tried to extend her some grace. I've heard great things about this quaint deli located on North Washington Street in Alexandria, VA so I had to put my taste buds to the test. I ordered one cold and one hot sandwich to get the full effect. I loved the crunchiness of the bread and how the ingredients were evenly distributed across the whole length of the bread. You have the option of ordering a 6 or 12 inch sandwich that ranges in price from $13 to $16 and whichever size you order you will be happily satisfied. Next time I visit, I'm definitely going to check out the eggplant parm which is one of my favorite Italian dishes of all time. read more

Small quaint spot in the Old Town area. The quality of deli meats is very good. The menu has hot and cold sub options, pastas, salads, and desserts! All orders are placed at the counter and if you dine in, your meal is brought to you. Also if you don't finish they will wrap the rest for you as well. Street parking is available. We were so excited about this sandwich shop in Old Town. The menu had a wonderful selection of warm subs that hit the spot in the cold weather. Lots of seating available although all the table tops needed a good wipe down. The young worker at the register was so incredibly rude that it spoiled the entire experience and we will not be returning. When I asked for a box he said no, even though I saw the boxes. Waited far too long. Stood there for 30 minutes after the time it was promised. Manager did offer a free dessert but I declined. Cheesesteak was ok. One of the best around here but that's not saying much. Also, for all concerned: a Philly cheesesteak does NOT have peppers on it. That is a pepper steak. This place is good enough that after trying it once, my daughter and I ate here *three days in a row.* We got a wide variety of subs -- meatball, eggplant parm, California cheesesteak, prosciutto, and we've gotten two different types of turkey subs. Each of them were excellent--good meats/proteins, fresh toppings, finely shredded lettuce. The smalls are ample-sized, and I'm a 200-pound man; maybe serious athletes and really big guys need a large. Word to the wise: when ordering online, the menu may say that a sandwich comes a certain way (i.e., with lettuce, tomato, onion, Italian dressing), but unless you mark those boxes, they will not be put on your sub. Service was pretty prompt--10 minutes? And without being asked, they brought out a dog bowl and filled it with water when we ate outside with our pooch. read more

Solid Italian subs. Good crusty seeded bread with just enough bite to make it interesting. $13 for a small but a couple bucks more buys you enough to feed two. I like to keep the other half in my fridge to marinade overnight. Everything is made to order so you've got a 8+ minute wait, particularly if they're slammed for delivery orders. They also have an Italian beef and eggplant parm I'd like to try. Far superior to what you find at Jimmy John's/Jersey Mike's/Firehouse. Highly recommended. read more
