You don't need to find another jeweler - Johnny Underhill can do anything you need. He resized my engagement ring from 6.25 to 6, reinforced the prongs of the ring to make them stronger and less likely to catch on threads, and he repaired several pairs of earrings. One had been smushed flat (stepped on it) and he reformed it and etched it, one was missing a link and he gave it a new one, one had snapped in two and he used epoxy to repair it. He also cleaned all of the pieces and reformed a nose ring. He was timely (had ALL of it done within the day), able to stay open late to accommodate same-day pickup, obviously very passionate about his work, and funny too. His prices were very reasonable and he explained the need for each charge (general ring resize price, adding gold to the ring, adding a gold link, etc.) He's a GEM (pun intended) of a jeweler and highly worth the appointment necessary to stop by. read more

This time he took a small diamond out from one part of another ring that had broken off, and put in another ring that was missing one while fixing the other one so the jagged edges didn't caught on my clothes for the other. He also tightened the rest of the stones and polished it and he was able to squeeze me in before he even opened. This one-man shop is fantastic. We met John for a resizing of my grandmother's wedding ring this evening, and found a funky, high-tech shop, with a built-in wall terrarium of poison dart frogs (not actually poisonous when fed normal frog chow, but still absolutely beautiful). John is knowledgeable, meticulous and a weird guy in the best way (his workshop has a slightly mad scientist vibe.) Other than taking some time to find his shop, I had such a positive experience. *fyi his studio is located in the back by the parking lot in unit 136* This review is for a ring resizing. I scheduled an appointment over the phone for 5pm on a Tuesday and showed up a little early. The jeweler John was there before my appointment with another client but was able to see me not too long after. He carefully measured my ring size before working on my ring to be resized. My ring was a size7 and after measuring my finger with a ring sizer, he needed to take it down 3/4 down to a size6 1/4. After about 15min of waiting, he had the ring ready. I truly admired his craftsmanship! I couldn't see where he made the incision thanks to his laser welder. And only for $35, cash preferred. I would definitely pay more for his skill and the same day, 15min TAT return. I would highly recommend. read more

John resized our two wedding rings while I waited. I had been told by another well regarded jeweler in Albany that they would need to have the rings for 7+10 days...why? John did it while I waited. The rings are both absolutely perfect now. I obsessively looked them over trying to find a scar or mark but I could not. He even returned the two leftover slivers of gold to me which I wasn't expecting. John is very likeable and enthusiastic about his work. He was very careful to be sure I was certain about my sizing. I work in a giant refrigerator and my fingers contract in the cold, I wanted to get a nice tight fit over the knuckle so I no longer have to worry about my ring slipping off and away. This is strictly a repair place, not a jewelry store, in a strip mall that features massage parlors. Don't be put off by the unprepossessing atmosphere. John is a master craftsman who knows his business. I had a saga with an antique garnet and diamond ring that had prongs sticking up. First I took it to Pavé which had repaired earrings for me for $35. As I noted in an earlier review, they would charge $675 to repair the prongs, and recommended removing the garnet for another $325. That was about the price of the ring when I bought it, so I decided against letting them repair it. I took it to Kim's Watches and Jewelry Repair, where I had had a bracelet untangled for only $8. Mr. Kim didn't replace the prongs, but he bended them, for $40. I thought the ring was fine but the prongs began sticking up again. Mr. Kim again worked on the ring, and charged me nothing. But I knew the problem wasn't solved. When I saw the positive reviews for Underhill Studio, I took the ring to John. He carefully examined the ring and showed me photographs. Virtually all the prongs needed replacement, but not the center garnet. It took two visits, but he replaced all of them for $185. The ring looks great and I think the problem is finally solved. If you want an upscale jewelry store, Pavé is fine. If you want an expert who charges a fair price, try Underhill. read more

My engagement ring was a bit too large and kept sliding around my finger so I contacted Underhill studio through yelp to inquire about resizing. He responded right away and gave me a very fair quote (especially compared to other jewelers in the area). His hours are extremely flexible. He even agreed to meet at off hours, ex: 5pm on Fri and sat. My knuckles are quite large so we came up with the solution of placing speed bumps in the ring rather than sizing down.
