I purchased a 14 karat gold 18" chain from M.Lowe and Co. for my mother. The piece was sleek and elegant at first . After a couple wears I notice it tarnished around the entire chain causing it to look very dull. I did not intend on sending her jewelry in for a cleaning so soon to get it back to the original shine. I wouldn't purchase from here again. It reminds me of one time wear costume jewelry. Went shopping here for an engagement ring. 3/4 people we dealt with (one of them being the owner) acted like they couldn't be bothered with us. One employee was great! Ended up purchasing a ring online through them but found some glaring problems with the diamond. When asking the owner about it she seemed to look down her nose at us and act like we were the problem. When asked about the ethics of the diamonds she sources she claimed that she "gets them from an Indian man who treats his employees fairly" and then proceeded to use the argument "Well do you drive a car? Do you fly when you travel? What shoes do you wear?" Etc. That was the final red flag for me. Returned the ring within the confines of their return policy and got the typical attitude from the owner. They get 2 stars only due to the customer service of one employee who was great. Would not recommend shopping here. There are way better places in the area with much friendlier customer service and higher quality more ethically sourced gems. read more

I've been an M. Lowe customer for many years, and I can safely say I will never tire of visiting this store which is always a delightful adventure to enter and discover. Literally a feast for the eyes to anyone who loves color, texture, design and the highest quality gems, beads, antiques, etc., that the jewelry world has to offer. I always find Margo and her entire staff very welcoming, warm, friendly and fun to talk to. A great education awaits one as well, since Margo is a gemologist and genuine rockhound, really loving the great material she works with and sells. Designs are dreamed up and created by only the best artisans, and several of those work right inside the store. Thus a customer has the opportunity to purchase or have custom made one of a kind designs that are produced carefully, with love, and with the finest attention to detail. Just yesterday I accidentally got my necklace pulled on the arm of my chair when I leaned over to pick something up. When it broke I nearly cried. This is a beaded necklace I got at M. Lowe almost 20 years ago. I've worn it more days than not, and find as beautiful still today as I did the day I bought it. Which is true of all the pieces I've been lucky enough to wear and enjoy from this gallery. The great news about my cherished beaded necklace that broke is I knew immediately that I can simply bring it back to the store and have them repair it for me, as their services are wide ranging and supportive of the items they sell (which in my experience are very robust, but since I'm a knucklehead who sometimes catches on furniture, well, I do occasionally need a little bailing out here and there). Suffice to say I cannot say enough how much I've loved and appreciated this store and all the people in it over the years. It's really a treat to visit any time I am in the area. Unfortunately, I feel better about my poor experience at M. Lowe's after having read the reviews here. At least I'm not the only one who has felt dismissed by an unfriendly salesperson! My fiance gave me an antique, family-heirloom ring during our recent engagement. It needed to be re-sized, so I started searching out local businesses for advice and service. I've worked in the Gourmet Ghetto for nearly ten years, so I went M. Lowe's first. Not only was I left to stand awkwardly in the store while the salesperson finished a personal phone call, but after telling her that I was interested in having an antique ring re-sized, she interrupted me with, "Did you buy it here?" I repeated that it was a family ring, and asked for help understanding the type of work that went into making a ring smaller. She was very abrupt and dismissive. I did not feel welcomed there at all. The kicker, though, was when she asked what size I needed the ring adjusted to. I told her I wasn't sure. She handed me a ring-sizer. Two different sizes seemed to work, but I wasn't sure how snug it should feel. "What kind of advice do you give people when they are trying to find a good fit?" I asked. She replied: "We don't." As I stood there nonplussed, she elaborated: "Well, you wear rings, don't you?" When I told her "Not really, that's why I'm asking", she said, "Yeah, I don't either." That's when I knew I'd be taking my business elsewhere. My fiance and I will be looking for a wedding band to match the engagement ring, but it sure won't be at M. Lowe's. When a customer is asking someone to permanently alter an antique ring, he or she should feel that jeweler is going to take good care of it. The lack of respect I felt today did not translate into confidence that they would offer any better customer service when it came to re-sizing my existing ring, or assisting with any future purchases. The text on M Lowe's website makes it sound like the owners care about newly engaged couples. Perhaps their employees should read it. read more

Husband H. and I popped in here on a few days ago between post office-ing, Cheeseboard-ing, and grabbing a few last minutes gifts in the wonderful and tasty Gourmet Ghetto. The two ladies there were very helpful and made funny faces at Baby H., who sat in his stroller all happy and full of chuckles while we walked around searching for treasures. I tried on a gorgeous enameled copper necklace that they said was from an estate, but it was a little small on me. Then Husband H. and his amazing eye for lovely things appeared with a beautiful little hammered copper necklace featuring a bird carrying a small, orange fruit in its beak that dangled right in the hollow of my throat. It was perfect, and I've worn it every day since. We'll definitely be popping in a whim again sometime. The store has new as well as estate jewelry. They have fine jewelry full of sparkling diamonds, rubies, and other precious stones, but they also have less expensive (and to me, more appealing) pieces. It's definitely worth going in if you're looking for something special for your loved one or yourself. read more

I went to M Lowe and Co to get an engagement ring. They had a lot of pretty jewelry available off the counter but I wanted to customize a ring to fit my size and also to fit a bigger center diamond. I should have guessed from the start that I was taking a risk because everytime i asked for something, Margo's response was a non-committal "I will ask" or "I will try". But we went ahead and placed an order based on a ring in the store anyway. They were supposed to deliver in 3 weeks. A day before the delivery date, Margo called to tell me the jeweler didnt get the ring quite right. And that she was having them make another one that would be available 5 days later. This was 15 days to the ceremony and cutting it very close. We waited patiently, and 5 days later, she called to tell us the ring was wrong again. We decided to stop by and take a look anyway. Neither ring was anywhere close to what we had ordered. They were very poor attempts and we cancelled our order and got our jewelry from another very reliable jeweler in San Carlos. Take away - 1. If you buy what she has, probably a good idea 2. Want to custom make anything, DONT GO THERE! 3. The diamonds she showed us were all heavily flawed and fluoroscent and the price was still very high. We got a much better stone with a beautiful cut in another store for a more reasonable price. read more

After scrolling the reviews for M. Lowe, I feel I'm detecting a trend. For shopping, people seem to love this place. However, when it comes to other customer-focused services, M. Lowe struggles. And I struggled with its jewelry repair services for an antique ring. I was told my ring repair would take about 3 weeks. 4 1/2 weeks later, I still hadn't received the call that my ring was ready, so I called. There was some confusion on their part about what, in fact, I had requested be done. NOT comforting. We had discussed the necessary repairs in detail at the store. I referred to my receipt to see the notes were incredibly vague - thus the problem. I was told it was more work than they had thought, and the cost would likely double. My confidence was rapidly waning. A week or so later, the ring was 'done.' Unfortunately, when we went in the store to pick it up, my husband noticed they had done only half the job. Blah blah blah - two visits later, they agreed to send it back for repairs and said we could expect a call in 1 week. That time, things were pretty much on schedule, and my eagle-eye hubbie said it looked all good. Fortunately, there was no mention of additional charges. The ring seems ok, but I don't think I would return for repairs. I just don't have the confidence in them necessary to entrust them with such valuable items. read more

They ruined my engagement ring. After our great experiences at M Lowe, we purchased my engagement ring here. The [platinum] ring we loved was a bit too large, but Margot and another salesperson swore up and down that they could resize it, no problem. Well, they resized my platinum ring with GOLD. So there is a gold stripe on the underside of the band. I brought it back, because I thought it was so odd, and Margot told me that this is "just what happens." I checked with another jeweler, who was absolutely horrified and said that the gold has spread into the band and cannot be fixed. read more

I recently had my (now) Fiance's ring custom made at M. Low & Co. and it turned out amazing! I brought in my grandmother's imperial Jade stones to use for the ring, and being that I have never designed a ring, and hopefully won't be designing another engagement ring ever again, I was pretty clueless about what exactly I wanted. The employees were very helpful in showing me different possibilities with rings they already had and what my options were for setting my stone. Once I found a ring that I really liked, they took it and drew up a few designs of what my ring would look like. They were also very conscious of my time. Being that I went to them just under a month before I wanted to pop the question, they had to get started right away. They would constantly check in with me and my mom (who was helping me) to let us know how things were coming along. I have since popped the question and have given the ring to my fiance and she LOVES IT! I am always very disappointed when businesses do not keep the hours they advertise. I need a ring repaired and I'm looking to purchase another ring. I have very limited opportunities to get to a jewelry store, only Sundays and the occasional Monday. M.Lowe's advertised hours are Monday - Saturday, 11:30am to 6pm. To be safe, I checked on line AND I called the store before going. The phone call went to voicemail, but the message confirmed the posted hours with the exception that they would be closed on Mondays in July and August. Being that it's October, I assumed the message was never updated. I was a little concerned that the phone went to voicemail, but the message also said they were probably helping customers if they didn't answer. At any rate, I drove over and sure enough, there was a small sign in the window saying they would be closed Monday until mid-October. ARGH!!!! Now that I've gone to Yelp and have seen some of the other reviews, I'm actually relieved I did not take my ring to this store. read more

I went here with my fiance to look at engagement rings. My family has been going to this store for years and we have had good experiences in the past. We were told we needed to come back to the store when Margo (the owner) was available. When we came in later that afternoon we described the ring we were looking for and gave her a price range to which she responded "oh, no, we can't do it for near that price" and shook her head at us. Not only was she unwelcoming when we were first introduced, but she did not offer any suggestions on how we could work on the design to stay within our budget, etc. She then told us she would see what she could do and call us later in the week (all the while shaking her head at us). It has now been over two weeks, she has not called. We were able to find several other jewelers able to make the EXACT ring we were looking for in our price range and ended up going with Oaks jewlers on Solano. Given the economy you would think any owner of a small jewelery store would go out of their way to make customers feel welcomed, but not Margo. I have always loved this store, looking at their pieces in the windows, etc. But after meeting the owner neither I nor any of my family members will ever be supporting this business again. read more

I was extremely disappointed after my visit. This place was recommended to us by Gem Gallery - the store we got my engagement ring from. I've been looking all over for a wedding band I like and had hopes that this place may have some nice stuff. They do have some nice original rings, however, the service was so terrible that I didn't want to buy anything from this place. I just felt rushed the whole time like the sales lady didn't want to help me and wanted me to leave. I had to ask her to show me specific rings and she would bring them out one at a time instead of showing me a few rings at a time. Also, I saw a ring I did really like, but wanted to know if it could be remade in white gold - the sales lady spoke to me in such disdain for not liking yellow gold and making it seem like I was so extremely picky. I don't think she was being snotty, I think she just didn't want to help me. And I think my 2-carat white round diamond engagement ring shows that we can afford to buy nice things from their store, but I guess she didn't give a shit. Well good thing for the sales lady, I won't ever go back and there isn't a chance in hell I would spend any money there. So she doesn't have to worry about dealing with me again :) read more

I just moved her from NYC. thanks to yelp, I went to reset my mom's heirloom ruby ring. After being waited on by someone that seemed to be unfamiliar with her job. She had me waiting while she asked her superiors for every step of my service. After much waiting some mysterious woman in the "back" relayed to me it was a fake. This ring has been in my family for generations from Korea. it is a flawless 20 karat ruby. I immediately left. I don't think they know what they're doing. Lowe, I was invited to stop by and she would take a look, tell me what the stones were and give me an estimate of their approximate value. She was most helpful, thorough and gave me advice re' how to sell the pieces. She even cleaned many of the pieces, making them really sparkle. Lowe is beautiful, however I went in for an estimate on designing a ring using diamonds from another piece of jewelry I owned and the quote I was given was 60% more than my second quote from another reputable jeweler in town. In addition to the pricing the sales person was not very friendly and seemed to be "put out" by having to assist me. Needless to say I am glad I decided to shop around and look elsewhere. I'm a little surprised by the negative reviews on Yelp because not only was the selection great, but the staff was so warm and friendly and patient. We certainly don't look like an expensive young couple; we weren't even looking for a diamond for the engagement ring. But that day, I could almost believe that M Lowe was my personal jewelry box because the staff let me play with ALL of the rings. I got my fiance's engagement ring at M. Lowe and she loved it. So, we recently went back there to get our wedding bands, which are also wonderful. They have a nice selection if you don't want something generic from a chain jeweler. They didn't pressure me when I was looking at engagement rings, which I appreciated (I can't stand sales people who ask you every 30 seconds if you're "all right"). But, when we had questions about the various options for our wedding bands, they were definitely attentive and helpful. They certainly don't seem snotty at all (my band was resized and I picked it up wearing shorts, sandals and a t-shirt -- I felt terribly underdressed for the store, but they greeted me politely and didn't even seem to notice). read more

My Fiance and I have had two upsetting experiences while using M Lowe and Co's appraisal services. First, we were told on a Wednesday that we were able to stop by any time to have a diamond appraised. We called on Thursday just to make sure the appraiser was available before we left for the store and we were told that he only accepted appointments on Tuesday and Wednesday. Therefore, we had to cancel an appointment at another jeweler's and rescheduled a new appointment for the following week. If that wasn't annoying enough, we were told that our appraisal services would be completed on 4/8. When I called on 4/9 to tell them we would be stopping in within the hour, I was told that the appraisal wouldn't be completed until the following Monday, 4/11. This resulted in a further delay of completing my engagement ring at another store. I'm not sure whether M Lowe and Co felt that our business was unimportant or just didn't care whether or not we were satisfied customers. In any case, we spend over a hundred dollars to have a diamond appraised and were left upset and highly disappointed in their services. I would not recommend M Lowe and Co! read more

I have noticed the slow response, but when I asked to see jewelry, the sales staff was knowledgeable, friendly and very helpful. M. Lowe has some of the most unique one of the kind jewelry in the Bay Area, and its great to have a wonderful piece of very special jewelry from there. M. Lowe has a unique and often beautiful collection of jewelry, and I went in looking for earrings for my wedding. I had not bought anything there before, but I have come here to browse occasionally. Marianne was extremely helpful, pulling out earrings and searching for the store for the ones that fit my criteria, and was also very open to having me try them on to see if I liked how they looked. I didn't feel any sales pressure, and the sales lady even suggested that a few days to think about which earrings I might like since I was waffling between two. I ended up coming back the next day to purchase a pair of earrings that were made in house (they were willing to customize them because I wasn't sure about one of the charms that they had added- I decided to keep it as is). The jewelry can certainly be expensive here, but I feel like they have a good selection, and is worth it if you really like the piece. read more

The staff helped us find a Trinity wedding ring that we had seen in the past. They found a beautiful version from a supplier back east and had it shipped to the store within our short time frame. The cost was similar to items we found online, that were of unknown quality. They did a great job on the fitting, and the special order ring did not need to be be re-sized. I would think that as business owner, she would value good customer service. I came in to look at some rings and felt like I wasn't taken seriously as a customer. Even her own staff recognizes her cold and rude behavior and apologized on her behalf. There are plenty of other jewelry stores in the bay area that will gladly take my money.
