Undergrowth Coffee is right next door to Ms. Mae's 24/7 dive bar. The only time I've visited Undergrowth Coffee is when I'm finishing a lovely brunch of beer at Ms. Mae's after staying up all night. So once the bright morning light is really getting intense you can stroll out of Ms. Mae's and head right into Undergrowth Coffee where they also have food but I've never gotten the food but I do get the coffee and they do have some good coffee here. So after a long nights work and some fun at Ms. Mae's it is a great thing to have a nice hot cup of coffee to chase down the Ms. Mae's breakfast beers to energize you for the walk home. read more

This particular Sunday afternoon, I was looking for some kind of coffee, a snack, and an outdoor area to read for a while. A quick google search led me to Undergrowth Coffee. The place is cute and tucked away on Magazine St near Napoleon. I've passed here so many times and never knew it was there! Anyway, I walked in and started browsing the menu. They do have several latte flavors, including lavender , if you like flavored lattes. I went with the seasonal cookie cold brew and the AM burrito. I was given my drink right in the front of the cafe and was given a buzzer for when my food was ready. I went to the rear patio/courtyard area and waited for the buzz. The burrito didn't take long but it was piping hot when I bit into it! Perfect blend of ingredients and the perfect crisp with the bacon! The cold brew was also really good. It wasn't too overly sweet nor did it taste syrupy. It was blended really well! I sat and read for a while, just enjoying the outside sounds. I'd definitely return for a little hideout. read more

On the strip of Magazine St near Napoleon Ave, sits this euphoric coffee and breakfast shop. I had gone here to do some web surfing. There's lots of walking traffic along Magazine so you'll meet lots of people. I'm not a big coffee drinker, so I opted for the Chai Tea (on ice), which was really good. They also have a full service kitchen in the back. Ordered the bacon, egg, and cheese Flatbread; very tasty and light. The back of the shop has seating for outdoor use. More of a treat was a heated almond croissant. So excited to have a great coffee shop back in this location! I stopped in today after hearing from a neighbor that Undergrowth Coffee had taken over the space after Hey! Cafe left. Walking in I loved what Undergrowth did to the place. The green paint gives it an airy and welcoming vibe that it didn't have previously. I grabbed an iced latte and hubby grabbed a regular drip coffee. Loved my iced latte. It was smooth and delicious. Hubby enjoyed his plain drip too. Happened to notice that they have some delicious sounding seasonal flavors on their outdoor menu board. Wish I'd noticed them before ordering my standard iced latte but gives me an excuse to have to go back! :) Another great thing about this spot is that the pastries are delicious! I highly recommend the financier, although if you plan to share with a friend or spouse, be sure to get two...you'll want one all for yourself. I agreed to share with hubby but actually didn't want to share any of it after taking the first bite. We also got a blueberry scone and the scone was just the right texture and had a plentiful amount of blueberries!! I typically don't enjoy scones because they are dry and too crunchy but this was a bit on the softer side and has forever changed my opinion on scones - they can be good! LOL The barista was super pleasant and provided the password to the wifi. We also took a moment to enjoy the delightfully nice fall NOLA weather in the cute pink outdoor tables. Oh and if you're a regular to the Uptown area, you may recognize the gentleman known as "Twitchy" as a regular out front. He's been at the one of the pink cafe tables every morning this week. This place surprised me! I used to love Hey Cafe that was there, so was bummed to see it transition. But since I can still visit them at a different location, and because Undergrowth is actually so good, it turned everything around. I LOVED the cashew milk option. They make their vanilla syrup in house and it's so good. The space is inviting and the baristas are friendly. Definitely recommend. read more

Undergrowth has a great vibe! There is a ton of indoor seating, and the outdoor seating area has coverage and fans. Definitely a great environment to grab a coffee and read / work. I got a lavender latte, and I was not a big fan of the flavor. The drink itself tasted watery and a little like there was juice mixed into the coffee instead of syrup. Definitely not what I had expected. But, they have a lot of syrup and drink options, so I'll give something different a try next time. read more

Ordered online just to give this place a try. We ordered two food items (buffalo chicken wrap, spinach and artichoke croissant) and two drinks (iced matcha w/ cashew milk, hibiscus tea). Gave the name for our order and was given a bag that felt super light. Checked and there was only one item in the bag which was the buffalo chicken wrap. Explained to the lady at the register that the spinach and artichoke croissant was missing. She replied that it hadn't been on their menu for months so wasn't available, to which my reply was that I was able to order it online. She checked the system and saw that I was in fact able to order it. She offers to replace it for something else. I browsed the case with muffins and such and didn't want anything in it so I started looking at the full menu which must have prompted her to say she would only replace the croissant basically with something similar priced (which I had already assumed on my own, I understand that a higher priced item would cost an additional charge). I considered getting the buffalo chicken wrap like my husband and asked if their buffalo sauce was super spicy as I can't handle too much spice. The lady at the register responds "yes buffalo sauce is spicy". Buffalo sauce can range in spice level but what do I know? ‍ I checked my husband's buffalo chicken wrap and it had bacon on it, which we specified no bacon for. I opted to have my croissant replaced with an egg and cheese flatbread which was nice and warm and pretty good. They remade my husband's wrap without the bacon. The only reason I would go back to try this place is because of the person who brought our replacement food out (who I am assuming was the cook). This person was very apologetic for missing the order specification for the wrap and completely missing the croissant which was not available. I don't have any issue with a mistake needing to be corrected but the register person acting like we were slow or something is what turned me completely off. read more

Got the spiced cold brew (black), which is cold brew with a mild hint of spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, etc). I liked that the spices added extra flavor without it being a syrup (no sweetness added). Good coffee should be robust and rich, but never bitter, and that's how I would describe the espresso here at Undergrowth Coffee. I got a piccolo, and my husband got a macchiato. Both of our drinks were smoothly steamed (no bubbles or over-frothing!), and the milk supported the bold espresso flavor without diluting it. I got dairy milk, and my husband tried the cashew milk on a helpful recommendation from the friendly barista. When at a highly distinguished coffee shop like this, a lot of times, I find the baristas can come off as arrogant or condescending (If you ask a question, you might be talked down to, and told to go to Starbucks). However, the barista who took our order here was extremely friendly, knowledgeable, and was happy to give her personal opinion on her favorites and drinks we should try. I wish I got her name! Such a great coffee spot right on the corner of Magazine and Napoleon. The pastries were DELICIOUS (some of them I know are sourced from Compagnon Bakery)- the scone is not dry like others and the croissant is sooo flaky and crispy. I also love that they give you the option to warm up your pastries- not all coffee shops do. Nice selection of coffee and teas to choose from, plus other snacks like oatmeal, hummus, and yogurt bowls. Super cute space with lots of greenery, though I wish they had some more indoor seating. There are about 4 tables inside and 2 outside on the sidewalk. It's a small, cozy space - but they do well with social distancing the tables! Great service, and I like that they have a compost bin and use compostable cups and bags. read more

The atmosphere at the shop is great, the owners are friendly, and the coffee is good! Undergrowth Coffee is the perfect neighborhood place to get a little work done, relax, or converse with a barista about international coffee varieties or home-made oat milk - all while sipping on an iced coffee or taking bites from a delicious baked treat. I stopped by earlier this morning, loved it, and will definitely be coming in again. As soon as I walked into Undergrowth, I was greeted by an incredibly friendly barista who directed me to seating in the front and rear of the space. The shop has outdoor seating on Magazine street, as well as high-top seating by the window, a couple bar stools behind their espresso machine, and a few two-person tables along the wall. Among art, photography, and other trinkets - plants seemed to be thriving in the ample natural light of the storefront, on the counter of the barista station, atop the fridge or hanging in the window - which I felt contributed to the lively ambiance of the space. I also appreciated the green-painted walls, vintage light fixtures and tables, and antique tile floors. I sat at one of the two-seaters, which I found perfect for working on my laptop while watching people come and go from the shop. I didn't venture into the rear part of the space, but saw a few people go back there to eat food or drink coffee at what I assumed to be larger tables. Apart from plants and paint, however, what made Undergrowth stand out to me was its selection of coffees and other treats curated by a philosophy of ecological and social sustainability that came through in every aspect, large or small, in the running of the shop - from their sourcing of coffee from family or woman-owned farms or their 50-cent discount for re-using a cup. Not only do they make their own oat milk, but their cow-derived dairy is sourced from Progress Milk Barn, a family-owned farm in McComb County, Mississippi - less than a two hour's drive away. When I came by, they had four roasts on their shelves that one of the co-owners took me on a tour of: an Agaseke variety sourced from a woman-owned farm in Rwanda, a Costa Rican top-shelf, and your standard Honduran and Guatemalan beans - all of which had some verification of ethical origin. The coffees were relatively inexpensive compared to other ethical varieties I've seen, and were available in 12 oz bags. I went home with the bag of the Rwandan, because I really enjoyed its description as a coffee with a hearty semblance of roasted sweet potatoes balanced with fruitier notes of peach, prune, and lemon. I had two coffees while hanging out at the shop - a spiced cinnamon-cacao cold brew and an iced americano - and a brownie made with sumac and belgian-swiss ruby chocolate. Both of the coffees were wonderful, and I would recommend either. I especially loved the sumac brownie, which was a hard choice while trying to decide between cookies and cherry-chocolate or cheddar-jalapeno scones. I also appreciated the kindness of the staff at Undergrowth. They greeted regulars and welcomed strangers - and were incredibly charitable to myself and others who had questions about their coffee or their business. A young woman and a child came in and were greeted by name and kudos on the kid's Lilo and Stitch t-shirt. A couple walked in with a dog, who received a complimentary biscuit for being "not just a good boy, a great boy!" A group of some twenty younger guys, who were playing basketball across the street, were all greeted with offers of water and a place to cool off from the heat. One of the co-owners sat on a bar stool and gave the full history, description and care instructions for one of the plants on the countertop to a curious family. They say that kindness is a virtue that pays dividends, and that principle was evident in both the staff and the people who visited Undergrowth. I will definitely be coming by again. Undergrowth is in a perfect location on the intersection of Napoleon and Magazine, right next to a park, a bar and other shops and restaurants. I'd bring my friends here, have an interview or meeting here, or recommend it to anyone looking for a welcoming and comfortable space in Uptown.
