They do decent work, first off. The last piece I had done--and I've had six here--was about 4-5 years ago so take this with a grain of salt. But the person who was in the shop, a woman who told me she had some previous living experience in China since I brought in some Chinese calligraphies-- was extremely unprofessional. I told her that the calligraphies were valuable --they are museum-level valuable calligraphies and that I would be prefer she not touch the surface unnecessarily. Her response was, "We always touch the works, it doesn't matter, see?" And she proceeded to wipe her hands all over them as if to get a reaction from me. Because my partner was there and did not react I felt my hands were tied, but honestly she was a real nightmare. On top of that, we had a 40 dollar off coupon that she didn't honour because she wasn't "great with technology" --where did they find this person? I have had a lot of pictures done and the frames are nice, but this person--and I have no idea if she is still at the shop as an employee--was a disaster. read more

So amazing! Who knew that framing could be so FABULOUS?? Sure, I expected mats in several colors, and a variety of frame styles, but did you know that mats come in different thicknesses? Cut styles? There are fabric mats? That you can double-mat? There's such a thing as "museum glass" that's GLARE-FREE? It's magical!!!! And the frames. Good heavens, there were maybe 3K choices. I don't know. Normally I don't do custom framing, as I can usually find a standard size frame at one of the plethora of frame shops in this town. However, once in a while, I acquire a piece of art that doesn't fit that category; something that needs special attention. Now I ride down Gough St. on a regular basis, and I noticed a couple of weeks ago lots of activity going on in this little space, and indeed my curiosity was piqued. Once I saw the lights on, and the little sign that said OPEN, I poked my head in, and noticed lots of interesting woods on the wall and some very cool style going on there. When I got home, I picked up a piece that I had purchased some time ago but was unable to find the right frame for. I took it over to Under Glass, and after some debate, I decided to go with the mat & glass that was recommended to me by the helpful staff. They seemed to know what they were doing more than I, and asked good questions to help me decide. My piece was finished within a few days, and I was very happy with the final product. The quality of craftsmanship and service was fair in pricing and will hang on my wall for many years. Not to mention the cute redhead that was helping me. Great store with a wonderful aesthetic. Let's face it, this is an art store so the design and atmosphere of the workspace should be a huge priority! They really did a fantastic job with the layout and color scheme, making it a great experience overall. They offer a wide variety of products and top of the line framing material. I had one painting stretched by Kody at Underglass and one painting framed. I'm so happy with the way everything turned out! I wasn't sure how the painting would turn out because I bought it in Uganda and it had been rolled up forever -- but it looks great, and he was very clear on his approach and where he'd need to staple on the canvas. I'm really, really happy with the way the frame turned out. They have a huge selection of frames to choose from, and Kody talked me through my matting options. With his encouragement, I chose a double matting option which I really love -- but never would have thought to select on my own. I had two photography prints custom framed here. I knew they would be on a wall of my office that gets a lot of sun, so I went with the museum glass, which was a great choice. No glare at all. The staff were very helpful and took the time to talk through what would look best in terms of frame width, matte width, frame style, etc. The finished products look great, and were done quicker than the estimate, which is always appreciated. ***UPDATE*** Less than 24 hours after my review below, I received an email from Matthias, the owner, personally apologizing for my experience. Not only did he compensate for the experience in my expenses, but he took the time to look into the experience for more detail and then reach out to me with answers to my concerns. I am so grateful that companies like this exist who will go out of their way to ensure a great experience. In doing so, Underglass has definitely made a future customer out of me. ********************************* I needed a glass replaced in a diploma frame and went on a Saturday to Underglass Custom Framing. I will not be returning for a few reasons: 1. There was a Yelp deal for $40 for $100 worth of service, but they refused to honor it because I was not purchasing an entire frame. I did not find any disclaimers that this was a necessity. After re-reading the terms, I still have not found where it stipulates entire frame purchases only. 2. The rep told me they would call me when it was ready either tomorrow or the day after. Over one week later I still did not hear from Underglass, so I called them. The rep told me the frame had been ready for over a week. 3. I paid $70 to replace the glass and the sales rep told me they would help me position the diploma in the frame with a small piece of tape. I didn't bring it that day so said I would when I picked up. The day I called Underglass after not hearing from them, the rep said said that if I want them to put the diploma IN the frame, there would be an additional fee and I would not get the frame back for several more days. I found the overall service and consideration for what should have been an easy request to be extremely unprofessional and disappointing. read more

Keep in mind custom framing is very expensive but everyone at Underglass takes the time to ensure you're happy with the matting and frame choice. Gough St has fewer reviews than Church St but it's one (small) company. I've been to Underglass several times and will, no doubt, be back again in the future. They do beautiful work and spend ample time helping you choose the right frame and mat. It isn't cheap, but it is beautiful. And they stand behind their work. I worked with them to frame 2 sets of graduation photos and when I came home realized it wasn't symmetrical like we spoke about. I hesitated to call - but when I did ( 1 month later) they told me they stood behind their work - and to bring it back in. I did and the result was (to my eye) gorgeous! Be sure to buy the Yelp offer (or Groupon) and let them start a reward card for you (buy 4 - 5th is 50% off average price spent on the others) Parking on Gough St is hit or miss but I've always found a spot w/in 3 blocks. read more

My husband I recently used Underglass Framing for some favorite photographs we purchased and hadn't gotten to around to framing. It was our first time getting something custom framed and one of our first art purchases as a couple. The woman who helped us could not have been more friendly and patient as she helped explain the options that fit our budget. We must have been in there 30 or 40 minutes as we debated colors and glass type. We were thrilled with how the pieces came out and will treasure the photos (and frames) for years to come. I have now bought 2 Groupons for this frame shop, and have to agree with what the majority of people say about them, as well as their other location on Church Street. The work I have gotten done has been good work, but the prices have got to be among the highest in the city. Initially seems like a good (Groupon) deal, $100 worth of framing for $40. Well today I went in with a small print approximately 12"x 10". I chose a double mat and was originally quoted over $150 for two mats and no frills picture glass. That seems exorbitant given that I provided the frame itself. Granted I originally chose a textured cloth mat for one of the mats. But when I was told just that single mat would run $80 (again I mention the smalI size of the print) I had to downgrade. My feeling is that they are either price gouging to make up the difference on the Groupon, or they just simply are one of the priciest frame shops in the city. What I will do in the future, and suggest others consider doing is to get a second estimate from another shop before purchasing this shop's Groupon. To add insult to injury, they asked if they could have almost three weeks to do the work. I put my foot down at that point and got them to push it up by a week. The staff I have dealt with on both occasions have been friendly and helpful, so service is good. But this service will come at a price. ** The owner of the shop responded politely to my review. I don't really have a problem with the three week wait period to get work done, as much as with the prices. He stated the size of the frame (I supplied for the job myself) being 15.5" X 11.25". The 2 mats and basic glass I chose for this small frame, plus labor came to $14.99 over the value of the Groupon. That would be $114.99. You can do the math. read more

I definitely knew nothing about framing before coming to Underglass. And I still don't know much, but I have total respect for the people who work at Underglass. Framing is very much an art - from picking different matting, the type of frame, the type of glass and making sure that everything is put together to create an extremely appealing presentation. I walked in on May 4th with a map that I wanted framed as a gift. Since I didn't know anything about framing, I was guided through several options - single matting, double, frame types... It was all a little overwhelming, but the guy (Chad) who helped me was extremely helpful in answering my questions and providing information and suggestions. After paying, I was notified that the expected due date for the framing would be May 21st. Woah woah. Two and a half weeks?? I needed it by the 12th, but... okay, I can work with that; It's my own fault for not inquiring ahead of time. But then! I got a call on the 9th that it was ready!!! Happiest day. Actually, no. The happiest day would be today, because I just picked the frame job up and it looks amazing. Custom framing provides a sort of context to whatever artwork you get framed. So the map? Sooooo great. When they are consulting with you they are not on the phone or otherwise distracted. They focus on the customer. They respect your budget and don't try to sell you more than you can afford. Whether your budget is $175 or $1075, they can help you find something you'll be proud to hang on your wall. I have over a dozen pieces they've framed for me over the years and they look just as good now as they did the day I picked them up. Nothing has shifted or moved around (unlike what I've seen from other frame shops). They will always be my first choice for any framing needs. The best in town. By far. I've tried three other places and this one takes the cake. Cody (Hayes location) is amazing: I had four totally different pieces, and for framing each one I had something quite specific in mind, and I would ask Cody for a certain look/color/texture/dimension/combination in framing and he'd nail it every time, either immediately or soon after giving him feedback. As some other reviewers have noted, he also gave me his full attention. It didn't matter that another customer arrived at some point and he was alone in the store: I had arrived first, and he was going to take care of me properly without rushing me, which is the right way to do customer service. I even got to play around a bit with the last piece, and I'm super excited with what we came up with for it. I am now waiting for my pieces to be ready for pick-up, but even sight unseen I have full confidence that they'll look gorgeous. The staff at Underglass showed me a variety of styles and options and together we narrowed it down to a couple of great designs that really complimented my art and would also fit in really well with my home decor. The next step was to discuss the price. As I said I have had some things framed before so I had an idea of the cost, which can get expensive especially if you have a big piece like mine. What was nice was that they explained to me different ways to keep close to my budget and I couldn't be happier with the results. I used Underglass once prior and was very pleased with the customer service and framing. I was happy to find a Yelp deal or Groupon (I can't recall) for my second visit but it was super disappointing. I walked into the shop mid afternoon on a weekday, art work to be framed in hand. There was one salesman working with a couple. I sat on a stool and waited. And waited. And waited. The waiting wasn't the problem, I don't have any problem waiting my turn if I am least acknowledged. But I wasn't. Not a hello, be right with you, not a head nod, not even eye contact. After 30 minutes of feeling completely invisible I left. And big surprise, the salesman said not one word to me when I was clearly walking out. Not a single I'm sorry, or hang on. Nope. Nothing. I was so deterred my voucher has now expired & I've just accepted the loss. Total bummer as the first piece they framed for me with so nicely done; I really wanted this place to be my go to frame shop. read more

It's pretty expensive so I expected a really high quality job. I got my print home and realized it was damaged in the framing process. When I called to have this taken care of, the manager was extremely helpful and said he would fix it or buy me a new print. All seemed great until I realized I hadn't heard from him in a long time. I went in to ask and it appeared as if he had just let it fall off his plate. Frustrating, considering the time I had already invested and the amount of money I spent. But he was apologetic and took care of it (even threw in special glass). I was pretty stoked on this place until I got the final print home and realized there's a scratch on it and it's slightly puckered in the frame. Not sure if this is a problem with the second print they had to buy for me or mishandling, but it's upsetting. I think the guys are really nice and helpful and extremely friendly, but I'm disappointed overall in the quality and care of the work. I wouldn't recommend it. read more
