As far as South Congress goes, Uncommon Objects is definitely a place to stop by and always has been. I'm actually really happy to see them move to the new South Austin location and hoping there will be more parking there. As for actually buying anything here, it's unlikely that anytime I come in that I'll walk out with anything. Even the smallest of trinkets are $20 and up and anything that you would put on a shelf or desk is usually $50 to $80 dollars. Even with the sale going on before they move, it's SO expensive. But three stars for having interesting things to look at! (Maybe it's too hopeful of me to think they'll lower their prices at this new location...) read more

As I'm sure the owners of Uncommon Objects already know this, their wonderfully eccentric store on Congress is probably 90% lookers and 10% buyers and boy, do I love to look. The museum of oddities would blow the Little Mermaid's mind...Screw your dinglehopper, they've got more whoz-its and whats-its than her tiny little redhead could even fathom. Though there are quite a bit of people in there, the little nooks help flow people through the store of taxidermied animals including a dapper rabbit (he's bound to be late now) to toys your grandmother probably thought were old to old photos and busts of people ready to bust out of the ouji boards and crystal balls tucked onto shelves. While this place looks like a sick game of eye spy, this array of strange is curated so well to to look like organized chaos. I especially like the color-themed areas because, who knows, you might need that little red velvet jewelry box to accent your vintage collection of red soup cans. I even love that everything is priced with little labels, with some just saying, "really old picture $XX" Yes, some things are expensive, if you're in the market for a two-headed troll or you've been seeking out a vintage lighter since you started going to concerts and want to appropriately pay tribute to your favorite bands ( wth is with the lighter image on Apple phones...) but we bought some patches, and saw other reasonably priced peculiar paraphernalia. I'd love to go back with a stack of cash to find fun uncommon objects to decorate my house with...till next time! read more

We were really impressed with the layout of the store. Each room has a different color/theme. My wife was a little weirded out by the creepy dolls with one eye. There were random old photographs for sale, to give an idea. Worth checking out although you probably won't leave with anything purchased. read more

This is a pretty interesting spot to get knick nacks whether you're a local or from way out of town (like myself). Just got back from a trip to the South from California and was so impressed by how this store was PACKED with stuff! Here is how my visit to Uncommon Objects went: "Woah.... check this out!"....."Hey look at this"..... "This would totally look great in our house". Each time I picked something up in this store it was followed by: "115 dollars?!?!"..... "30 bucks for this old thing"...... "woah, 75 bucks?!?" This is easily the most expensive Antique store I've ever been into. Do they have cool stuff? Yes. Is it way overpriced? Definitely, yes. You're paying a lot because it's on South Congress. If you really want some Antiques head out of town. There are better Antique stores... they'll just require a lot more digging. If I went onto Antiques Road Show (personal dream #115) with anything in this store here's how it would go down: "I paid 100 dollars for this in an Antique store in Austin I'm pretty sure it's worth thousands" Then one of those creepy blond twin guys would tell me all sorts of information about my antique.... they would flip it over to reveal some hidden label, talk to me about the origin, etc.... but in the end that little blue treasure chest thing would scroll across the screen and say "Worth 20-30 dollars"...... and the camera cuts to me with tears in my eyes.... and the people from Uncommon Objects are watching me on TV counting their money and laughing. NOT entirely sure what the fuss about this place is all about. I did venture into this store during one of my stays in Austin (I believe it was my second time). Considering that, by American standards, anything 50years (25 for cars) or older is to be considered antiquity, there you have the answer to the why this store may have all the success it does have. Prices are a tiny too expensive for the items on display. Unlike other similar stores, this establishment does pride itself of keeping things organized. However, nothing compared to true antique-shops back in Europe, where most of what is displayed here would be considered vintage and where antiques are at least 150-year-old. read more

I love the eccentricity of the stuff they carry and have spend hundreds if not thousands of dollars at this store. It was one of my most favorite places to shop. Then I became a Mom and realized this place does not like kids. I get it. It's a store full of breakables. But my kid was confined to stroller. They told me they don't allow strollers and asked that I carry my over 2 year old. Yeah, that wasn't going to happen. He never would have wanted to be carried. Carrying a two year old in a store like this would have ended badly. The stroller was really my only option to shop. It sucks because I was ready to buy. I felt really sadly about it because I loved this store (now I don't) and frankly as a Mom of two-year old it is hard to shop, I need all the chances I can get. I made the trek all the way down there to be rejected at the door. What a f'in waste of my time. The really just need to put a big sign that says NO KIDS ALLOWED. I'm headed to the other vintage shops in town to find the stuff I need to finish up decorating my son's room. I don't think I'll be coming back here until my kid is fully grown. read more

Please, please let me move in! Uncommon Objects doesn't even describe how insane and awesome this store is. On a trip to Austin last year I was killing some time before heading back to the airport and thought to hit up Congress Ave and shop. Mostly stopping in clothing stores I saw the name of this place and popped in. I pretty much wanted everything I saw. You know how taxidermy is in? Well here it's the least weird thing on the wall! I remember finding a set of REAL human teeth from some old dental kit. I also remember seeing taxidermy ducklings. Sad, yes - but friggin' weird and interesting! The stuff here range from cool antique clocks and furniture to dead animals and car parts. Prepare to spend an hour in here oohing and ahhhing at things you didn't even know existed. I wish I had more time in Austin, I think I would have taken those teeth home! read more

Remember that Stephen King novel/movie "Needful Things," where people come into a store to find the object of his or her lifelong dreams? Well this store is sort of like that except the devil doesn't run it and it doesn't make you end up killing neighbors in your town. Or at least I don't think it does because that would be way too creepy! When you walk into Uncommon Objects you'll be taken aback by the sheer volume of things in this store. It's like the ultimate Estate sale full of antiques, preserved animals (little ducklings, really gross), jewelry, knick knacks and basically anything you could possible think of. Although it feel very overwhelming, there is definitely quite a bit of organization to the chaos. Things are grouped by type, era, color pattern, and are surprisingly well merchandised. I'll tell you that you couldn't pay me to spend the night in this store because I'd be creeped out by all the different items in here. There's just a weird energy that is created by mixing so many old things together. It's almost as if you bring an objects memories with it when something is pre-owned and resold. You have to visit Uncommon Objects at least once if you're in Austin because it really is a special little store that has much TLC placed into its operations. I may have been the most uncommon object in this store this week, as there's nothing like digging through the year 1954 to bring out the surreal in each of us. It's true, it does look a little like the Mother of all Grandmother's Rummage Sales, and some of this stuff is priced a little aggressively for what, in my opinion, you get. But the staff are super sweet and accommodating, and we did manage to unearth a few treasures which will be making an appearance at the upcoming elite event. So look forward to that, time travelers. All things considered, I do find myself wondering if they negotiate on any of these items (I mean, it happens constantly at garage sales), or if there's some sort of giant price book in the sky that the rest of us may not be privy to. Even so, I'm glad that they're here. Who knows where I'd locate that gigantic letter "R" I'd been trying to run down otherwise. See Uncommon Objects? See what you've done? Now you've made me kid. That's right. Just one star. Uncommon Objects is a store full of interesting chotzkies, ranging in stunning and beautiful to crazy and bizarre (a metaphor for Austin, no?) and has carved it's niche on funky SoCo. However, it's only getting one star from me because I am one mad momma. I may update it later as my feelings change...but right now I am in a pretty bad mood about Uncommon Objects, which was one of my favourite places, and a "Must Visit" place when you come to Austin, in my opinion. First, let me just say that I love the store itself. The selection of goods by the various vendors is spectacular. The pricing is a little crazy (where one thing can be $ and another thing $$$$,) but hey---I'm not a vintage reseller, and I'm not educated on the value of these items. Overall, I think the pricing is fair. However, here is the reason for my one-star rating: they don't appear to like kids. By nature, kids like to touch and explore and run around. One of the employees just "happened to be" around us quite a lot during our most recent visit this past weekend and, while WE HAD MY CHILD UNDER THUMB (I promise--she was not running wild or even two steps away from me,) this one employee took it upon herself to follow us throughout the store and tersely remind my child to be careful, explaining how expensive x-item was. ** First of all, if my child breaks something, we will gladly pay for it. We are fully prepared to pay for anything we break. I can't speak for other customers, but you can't assume that the children that come in there are simply there to break everything, and the parents won't make reparations. ** Secondly, dear proprietors, if you don't want kids in there, or if you want them on a leash, PLEASE post a clear sign on the front door that states, "UNATTENDED CHILDREN WILL BE GIVEN AN ESPRESSO AND A FREE PUPPY." ** Third, small children don't understand monetary value. Stop trying to tell them "It's expensive." ** Fourth, and most importantly, don't assume we are there "just to look." We always go in there and find a treasure, whether large or small, and Uncommon Objects is one of the stores we now go to for Christmas and birthday presents. (That was the case this weekend, and we dropped several pretty pennies at the register before we left.) One more tidbit before you visit: don't sit on anything. They don't like you to sit on anything. DON'T SIT ON ANYTHING! As soon as you even think about sitting somewhere, someone will show up to pointedly remind you not to sit on anything. I understand that they have hundreds of visitors on the weekend, and throughout the week, and to have people constantly sitting on vintage furniture can ruin the furniture and lessen its value. They are also pretty good about putting "DON'T SIT" signs on everything. However, even if it doesn't have a sign on it, and it just happens to be a 500-pound wood-and-iron antique trunk built for multiple transatlantic crossings and can hold the weight of five large men---DON'T SIT ON IT. read more

If I won the lottery, I would come here. If I didn't have other things to do during my trip in Austin, I would probably still be here, because there is so much to see. If you're into the eclectic, the unique, the hidden gems...you come here. It's a large store with many hidden nooks and crannies, so if you're looking for something particular, you may have to dig deep. If you are not looking for anything at all, you'll find much more than you expected. From old-time typewriters to cowboy boots to ancient postcards, you'll find it here. I didn't look too much at the jewelry because my tour guide probably would have stroked out, but the selection looked to be vast and frankly, uncommon. For years UO had been my go-to place for unique gifts. I could spend all day scrounging through all the wonderful stuff. I moved from ATX a few years back and just before doing so I found an awesome (and I don't use awesome lightly) set of cufflinks for a friend. I was just in town recently for a wedding and as my girlfriend and I were strolling down the street I had the unstoppable need to get new (to me) cufflinks for the next day's event. I knew right away where to go and sure enough within minutes I was going through trays of vintage mens jewelry and triumphantly found the sweetest set of Matador themed links that have ever clasped a cuff together. There are a lot of great places for quirky gifts in Austin, but everyone else is going there too. For the truly unique, go to Uncommon Objects and give a gift that will be remembered! read more

Located a few shops down from Allens boots, it's a casual place to stop and spend a few minutes. You'll most likely walk out empty handed and the staff are aware of this. Very disappointing as I was looking forward to visiting Uncommon Objects for the first time with my family. We weren't even in the door 5 seconds before an older woman rushed -- and I do mean RUSHED -- over to us, making enough commotion for everyone to turn around to look, and told us we could not use our stroller holding our 8 month old in the store. While my husband was holding my 3 year old's hand, the woman stepped in front of us all to block our way and informed me I could remove my baby and hold her while she stored my stroller up front behind the register because "it's too busy to allow strollers in her right now, we just can't allow it." Blink, blink. (Might I add, there was NO room behind the register. Blink, blink.) Uh, yes there were people milling about but I peered down the aisles and they were wide open and more than wide enough for us to pass. I was dumbfounded. I could understand this rule if it WERE really busy and the aisles could not accommodate strollers during high traffic times but 1) then PUT A PERMANENT SIGN AT THE ENTRANCE kindly giving folks a heads up, and 2) try and be cordial when you inform a family with an "I'm so sorry guys, but..." or "I hate to ask you but..." instead of arms crossed with a stern expression while shaking your head disapprovingly, while other shoppers shake their head at the management. We were not about to remove our sleeping baby so we did an about face 5 seconds later and turned around and left. We truly were made to feel like second-class citizens... not just with the request but the tone is was couched in. Let's face it, you don't want strollers in there for theft reasons and you're trying to institute the "leave your bag at the counter" rule with strollers but are too embarrassed to have to explain it to families. Either reason, doesn't matter. Won't be going back anytime soon. And will be sure to spread the word that Uncommon Objects is NOT FAMILY FRIENDLY and is, frankly, rude. read more

This place is a wonderful store to wile away afternoon hours looking at old, old stuff from antique jewelry to belt buckles to photographs. There are indeed quite a lot of uncommon items in here. The pricing seems pretty fair for what you get and any of the important jewelry comes with the appraisal so you can see what kind of deal you're getting. Beyond that the staff are quite friendly and helpful no matter if you're just browsing or purchasing. It is sort of arranged helter-skelter so finding stuff isn't easy, but that's why you browse. :) read more

In the five days I spent in Austin, this was my favorite place. I love old medical supplies. One of my friends knows someone who has an old medical equipment fetish. For me, it's not sexual or anything (I don't think), but I would happily live among jars of scientific specimens, anatomy posters, and trays of vintage speculum. When I was a little girl, I had a recurring dream in which I'd find a secret room in my house that I'd never noticed before, and that room would be filled with very old, magical things. Uncommon Objects is like that secret room come to life. I can spend hours in there poring over the detritus of the twentieth century. it's somehow full of everything that your grandmother threw away when she was cleaning out her mother's house. Little insignificant things that should have vanished into the ether of time or been swept into the dustbin of history pop up here, waiting for you to rescue them. Uncommon Objects is like a museum, but better, because you can touch everything. You'll like this place a lot more if you treat it like a museum rather than a store, and buy something just to thank the owners for letting you spend time there. That way, the $8 you spend on some obscure, obsolescent kitchen implement feels like a bargain, rather than a ripoff. A lot of the stuff seems overpriced for what it is, and sometimes that's true. But it's not like I'm going to come across a leather football helmet or a stuffed donkey commemorating the 1930-whatever Kentucky State Fair cheaper at a store down the road. For one-of-a-kind finds, the price is worth stumbling across them without having to spend every waking hour at estate sales and flea markets. read more

As a museum of old, cool stuff, artfully arranged and fascinating: 5 stars. As a thrift/antique store: 2 stars. Honestly, who is going to buy a 3-inch tall metal elephant figurine for $40???? Maybe if that metal is gold, and the inside is made of pure chocolate sourced from the highest peak in the Andes by trained goats. Yes, it's beautiful. It really is. But I've been in here countless times and never once have found anything worthy of the price tag. It is kind of like thrifting for lazy people, because the store has done all the work of finding the diamonds in the rough FOR you, and all you have to do is pay them an exorbitant amount for something you could have found for 75 cents at Family Thrift, right down the street. I'm sure I'll be back here, but only to browse the "exhibits". If I'm looking to buy, I'll be sure to go to a real thrift store, emphasis on THRIFT. read more

This place has all kinds of fun stuff! I am always mesmerized by all the costume jewelry in the case when you first walk in. Its kind of like walking into your grandparents house. Better than a junk store, it seems like they have a certain standard for the items they sell. On this particular day, I was looking for some funky lighting options for my house. You can find some real collector stuff. That being said, they are awfully proud of some of their treasures and it is reflected in their prices. Trips here are a love|hate kind of experience that I generally mostly dread. I have to be in *just* the right mood, otherwise I really loathe this place. I was disappointed by this shop. It had a lot of antique items, but most were hugely overpriced. And yes, I know that the older and more antique an item is, the pricier it is. I've been to many antique shops all over the country. But when I see a bowl of regular blue marbles priced at $3 PER MARBLE, I know it's way too expensive. Was extremely disappointed at how crowded the store was during the highest peaking Covid season yet. The store was tightly packed crawling with shoppers passing and standing mere inches apart. The reason I can't give it more stars is simply because it is priced so highly and many of these antiques simply are not worth what they are listed for. "This girl looks *just* like Claire Danes." I was like, where? He says "just around the corner. Looks just like her!" I peek around the corner, and it does look just like her. "That's because it IS her, goofy" I confirm. I hope Ms. Danes found something she wanted from this place. There are a few older items I might want if I had the money, but I just like old furniture. Have I ever bought anything here? Nope. But it's fun to walk around, and it's cute that the items are grouped into color sections. I once saw a bracelet that I liked here but thought was a little overpriced. When I asked about it, I was told that they don't know about the jewelry origins and can't negotiate; apparently other jewelry finders bring the stuff in to be sold through UO. Yes, they've got lots of cool stuff (emphasis on "lots") but it's such sensory overload. This is one of those old-school antique places where stuff is just piled on top of stuff, coming at you from all directions and it just keeps going up and up. If you are looking for some antique kitsch, then you are likely to find it here. But you had better be prepared to pay dearly for the convenience of finding it in one place instead of having to scour garage sales, flea markets, Etsy and eBay for it. I have wandered in here on a few occasions now, usually while waiting for a table somewhere nearby, and I have found the overall experience enjoyable. But then, I am neither claustrophobic nor put off by cluttered spaces. If the idea of wandering around tight aisles strewn with baskets of old keys, postcards, door knobs, mah jongg tiles and such appeals to you, then you shall be in your element. I must admit that I enjoy the appeal of baskets of other people's discards...can I make those keys into earrings, would it be weird if I wore a door knob as a necklace, and other such questions roil around in my head as each basket reveals its treasures. All in all, not a bad way to spend an afternoon. read more

They have a ton of interesting and wonky stuff on display for sale, but you'll have to go through every section to see the breadth of it all. Want taxidermied heads or animal skulls? They've got it. Vintage chairs? Yep. Old school parlor acoustic guitars? Antique glassware? Framed prints from books? Naked girls on postcards? Yep to all of that.
