The auction house does a decent job curating but has partnered with a UPS store (Store 2548) that is run by grumpy arrogant management that overcharged me with price gouging in part due to overpacking beyond all reasonableness, running up the size and weight of my box for no legitimate reason. In spite of asking for a receipt and tracking number twice, they refused to send them. The auctioneers say that Store 2548 is just "an option" and that it is my problem to deal with them, however it is clear that they steered me there, likely because Store 2548 is a "business partner". Since their "options" are no longer credible and cost me alot for mistreatment, I won't be back. read more

5/2/24 Thank you for the understanding that Live Auctioneers hide the bids from Austin Auction Gallery and therefore bidding on that site, and perhaps other platforms are useless. Perhaps you should add that information to your website so unsuspecting bidders, such as myself, will not waste their time on these useless platforms you "advertise" on. I now have a complete understanding of how my bid, given 8 hours before the auction opened, lost. And the winning bid, which was the same amount I bid, given at the time of the actual auction from the floor won. Point being, only bid at the time of the actual auction, because Live Auctioneers hide the bids given on their platform... 5/1/24 You said there is no conspiracy, what an odd statement. What I am simply trying to understand is why my bid of $500, placed 8 hours before the auction began, was not accepted as valid based on the fact that a bidder "on the floor" won the bid at $500, again after I bid $500 on the Live Auctioneers platform. And what I am able to ascertain is that your business is not set up well enough to recognize the bids placed on the other platforms you "advertise" on. And what you have explained, is that they hide the bids from you during the auction. That sounds odd also. I would suggest simply that your in house technology is not up to speed to coordinate with these other platforms during the bidding at the time of the live auction. This review is in response to Austin Auction Gallery's response to my prior review. On a prior explanation from your company you said that the Auctioneer recognized a bidder at the auction who was "on the floor" who bid the same amount that I did. So the winning bidder DID NOT BID BEFORE ME, HOWEVER THEY DID BID THE SAME AMOUNT OF $500. AND YOU KNOW VERY WELL THAT THE OPENING BID WAS $500, SO A BID OF $475 WAS IMPOSSIBLE. AND NOW YOUR SAYING THAT LIVE AUCTIONEERS HIDE THE AMOUNTS THAT BIDDERS PLACE ON THEIR PLATFORM. If that is the case, then why would you participate on that platform? So again, Auction Auction Gallery simply chose who may be at the auction that day, and gave them the winning bid. read more

I've purchased a few items here over the past year, having recently moved to Austin. Noteworthy: -the front desk clerks are friendly, informative, laugh at my jokes, and loaned me a pen without blinking for note taking on preview day when I had forgotten mine. Small gesture, but also simply courteous. -the floor staff on preview days are also friendly, and helpful, asking me if I needed assistance viewing any item without solicitation. Another small, yet courteous gesture. -on pick up day, the floor staff are extremely careful retrieving my items, paying close attention to their delicate condition. What's more, they'll bring items right outside and put it right onto your truck. And, yep again: courteous throughout. So, if you bought that ginormous wardrobe the size of a studio apartment, no worries: they'll load it for you, no charge. I make these comments because they are deserved, and from experience know that not all auction houses are as accommodating as Austin Auction. read more

The Austin Auction Company is a treasure! I've attended a lot of antique auctions around the world and Austin Auctions does an impressive job with their regularly scheduled antique furniture auctions. They sell local collections, but they also get massive shipping containers direct from European dealers filled with extraordinary, unique pieces that are definitely not typical of the Texas market. Their online catalog is well organized and easy to navigate (much easier than many auction houses). Excellent photography and descriptions. They also have in-person previews a couple of days before each auction. In-person bidding (call to confirm due to Corona restrictions) and online bidding on the day of the auction. The staff are always helpful - very low key. What will you see at an Austin Auction Company auction? Everything from stunning classic English furniture to designer handbags to a full-sized stuffed lion to an artifact from the Star Ferry in Hong Kong to a Texas themed sculpture, jewelry and paintings galore! I was referred to Austin Auction Gallery when one of my clients was looking to furnish her condo. The whole experience was exceptional. We were able to find most of the pieces to complete the space. Rip off artists! What a complete SCAM do not waste your time or money "bidding" on their items. At the close of online bidding I had the high bid on six items. When I did not receive an invoice I emailed them the next day inquiring as to the invoice on my items and I was informed that lot #1015 the Martinsville Walnut Dresser went to another bidder on live auctioneers who had a higher bid - not sure how that was possible since I was also on live auction bidding. I sent a reply asking about the other lots 1013 Eames Elephant Hide Rocker, 1017 Italian MCM chairs, 1107 bookshelf, 1012 4 Italian MCM chairs and the painting - still waiting on a reply. In my opinion they use the auction sites to bid up the prices on items and then sell them to their preferred bidders - I am an attorney so if this was a local auction I would consider legal remedies - as it is I will just leave this here as a warning - spend your time elsewhere far away from this unrepeatable lot - read more

I have shopped here for quite sometime and purchased some beautiful pieces. However, I would warn potential buyers that some of the 'antique' pieces are misrepresented and are not old and often are reproductions designed to deceive by whomever designed or manufactured the piece. This is especially true of art. Be sure to research the artist online, check the backs of potential purchases for signs of age and beware of mass produced paintings with 'illegible' signatures. You can find some treasures here but prices and buyers premiums are significant. Best advice I can give is be an educated buyer before bidding. Also, read the disclaimer on every auction which tells you all you need to know. read more

I just saw an example of great customer service. I was bidding online for a painting, and just as I hit "enter" to bid, the lot closed and my bid was posted to the next lot, an $800 painting I had never seen and didn't want. I went in Monday morning and the owner of the Austin Auction Gallery released me from the bid. He could have made me honor the online bidding agreement, and then offered to sell it again to get another fee, but he didn't. I will continue to buy there with confidence in their integrity. read more

Bought a piece January 2017 clearly represented by Austin Auction as of the Tang period in China (~1000 years old). This piece can be seen: https://new.liveauctioneers.com/item/50070388_chinese-tang-dynasty-equestrian-tomb-figure. Had it shipped by one of their recommended shippers. Arrived with four broken legs (am attempting to get compensation from FedEx). Meanwhile the damage revealed modern wires inside of the "antique" pottery piece. Notified Austin Auctions that the piece was not as represented. Their verbatim response was: "We described the piece as it was represented to our consignor when purchased in the 1970's from a dealer in Houston. As stated in our terms and conditions this statement was only our "opinion" based on the information provided by our consignor. Tang or not at this point I cannot offer a refund as the item is broken and I cannot return a broken item to my consignor. At this point the best solution already appears to be in the works with your filing of an insurance claim with the shipper." Thank you, Chris Featherston" In case the insurance fell through because I was pursuing both the insurance claim and seeing about Austin Auction returning at least some of my payment: i.e. the commission I paid to them (about $100), they accused me of trying to double dip: "The buyer's premium was part of your purchase price you will be reimbursed for that by the insurance company. If I had agreed to give you a refund on the piece due to your opinion of age the refund would have been for your purchase price. On what grounds would I refund the buyer's premium on top of the insurance claim?" Before doing business with an outfit like this realize that despite their advertised "rock solid commitment to its consignors and superior customer service" my experience was that they are neither knowledgeable nor interested in the customer. Austin Auction Gallery has some really cool auctions. I attended a bicycle auction several months ago where I purchased awesome new gear and cycling clothes. The prices were great!
