7.12.26 - spotted this place while grabbing drinks at Cha Redefine and had to go check it out. I've been wanting to try Uncle Tetsu for years and just never had a chance to. They had 5 flavors on display that we could choose from for the original size ($13). They also had the mini sizes ($7) in a few flavors. I believe it was original, ube or cookies and cream. I went with the cookies and cream mini. Totally forgot to take a pic of it. I didn't eat it til the next day but it was sooo good!! My favorite was the classic cheesecake (4 1/2 stars), followed by the Cookies 'n Cream version (4 stars) which didn't really taste like cookies n'cream but had a nice flavor to it. The Ube flavor was ok, definitely didn't taste like Ube to me though. Packaging was great, easy for grab and go. This Uncle Tetsu branch is located in the Chapman plaza on 6th Street between Kenmore and Alexandria. As usual, street parking in the area is not easy but this center has their own parking lot. Uncle Tetsu staff opened the store on time and had cakes ready to go, which is great because our parking meter was running out. There was no line go get in the small shop, no line to order and no wait to get our cake. I know this is supposed to be a "cheese cake" but I really want to call this "sponge cake". This is a really small location so it does get full pretty fast but the workers are working extremely hard working to give us fast and accommodating! Really enjoyed the both cakes, my only issue was I got a small cake and it was kind of creamy to the point where I feel like it was slightly undercooked. Did it still taste good? Yes! But the texture was creamy and soft compared to light and fluffy but if any one were to try this without having them before, they probably wouldn't notice. Love that they have a small size! These were the best cheese tarts I have ever had here or in Japan (where they are commonly sold at various stands in train stations in Tokyo and probably other major cities). So glad there are more of this fantastic chain on the west side now! A few years ago, you'd have to drive to Torrance or San Gabriel to find one. But why the trouble? You may ask... The Japanese style cheesecake is different from the western style cheesecakes in that it is much lighter, with a sponge cake texture, and not as sweet. In Asia there's a popular compliment ("Not so sweet!") for desserts made with just enough sweetness to please the palate but far less than the sugar- saturated traditional desserts. I think Uncle Tetsu's cheesecake is just that! Very refreshing and delightful. This store one open in Spring of 2023, I think. I had an issue with my order a few days ago but when I contacted them, I was able to talk to Patricia who was amazing and immediately resolved the issue. She was super kind and even followed up, I'm a regular there so it meant a lot. She really went above and beyond and I could tell how much she cares about the store and her customers. However I went in today, on a Friday night and there was a shorter Asian gentleman there instead and he was extremely rude. Patricia had talked to the team beforehand to give me a courtesy free cookies, which was so kind of her so after dinner at Quarters I stopped by, to pick up some other deserts as well. I mentioned this to the guy who looked extremely annoyed and then immediately made it seem like I was lying and told me to hold on while he contacts her to confirm. Obviously she's not there it's her off day and it's 10 minutes before closing so I don't even understand this overreaction of him to act like he was "confirming." Do you really think someone is just going to show up and make a whole story up to get a free cookie? I even showed him our texts and obviously he then had nothing else left to say and just gestured over to the cookies for me to pick one. The interaction was short but made me feel extremely uncomfortable as he really made it clear how much of an inconvenience I was. To be honest the mistake was on them and I wanted to buy another cheesecake, but his attitude completely put me off and I left. My colleague let me try Ube, and she's from Hacienda Heights. It was our first time, and it was so delicious, fluffy, and hard to resist! I immediately checked out the one near me. I found one in Ktown. I was so excited that I bought four and gave two to my relatives. But since we've already had it once, we were hoping for the same taste. So, when we tried it, we were disappointed; it tasted different, even though it wasn't sweet, still fluffy, but it felt like it was underbaked or not baked properly. When we cut it, it stuck and clumped on the knife. I haven't been back since. I thought they all tasted the same.
