Taste of Jamaica - Jerk chicken with white rice and a spinach patty

Has Taste of Jamaica given up? Started out so well and then it went downhill... uugh…read more I sat outside at least 10 minutes reading reviews and debating if I was gonna get some a beef patty before heading home. I even got out the car, walked up to the door, then got back in my car. I noticed the for sale notice on the outside. That was part of the hesitation. Then I went to their FB page and their only post in 2022 (August) stated that they were trying to sell the business... but then after reading how good the beef patties were in multiple reviews I decided to try 1... well actually 2 lol Went in. No greeting of course... ordered 2 beef patties, a large chicken soup and got a ginger beer. It totalled about $19.67... I'm not sure how, but I was going by the prices I saw posted from last year. Of course there were no prices posted inside and there was a piece of paper at the counter saying prices have increased due to supplier increases... So I get to my car instantly grab one of the beef patties and start to grub. Crumbs everywhere! The crust tasted like it might have been sitting out for a while, but it was still good. The filling was delicious and had a nice kick of heat to it. Finished and couldn't wait to get home to eat the rest... The chicken soup was overall good. But I don't know if it was actually chicken soup. There was chicken it , but it tasted like they took some different type of soup and just added chicken to it. It was flavorful but heavy. I'm actually curious to see how their other soup offerings taste and compare. Then came the real disappointment... I noticed that my second beef patty didn't look like my first. Then I took a bite and it wasn't a beef patty at all. It was some type of veggie or bean patty. Like did u run out and intentionally give me a different kind? But then to not say anything or ask what other kind I wanted was so wrong... Now I understand these people really want to sell the business (signs are posted all over the inside) but you should go out on a good note and at least leave the subsequent owners with a good reputation. I would only go back for another beef patty but then again probably not since I don't know what kind of patty I'd actually be getting... so probably not.

    Parishes - Jerk salmon wrap

Parishes is a small Jamaican eatery in a business plaza near the Berlin movie theater. You'd expect…read moresome of what they serve. Beef Patties. Rasta Pasta. But they also serve some familiar things in different ways. For instance, the jerk chicken and shrimp wraps. They also offer rice bowls with your choice of proteins. The rice pics I saw looked like white rice, rather than the rice and peas I generally see at Jamaican restaurants. I always order a beef patty when I try a new Jamaican place. Parishes' had very good flavor and good texture. I also ordered a jerk chicken wrap. The chicken was cut into small bite size pieces and served in a thin wrap with shredded lettuce, tomato, onions, peppers cheese and dressing. The wrap worked fairly well as a whole, but it could have been served by any number of types of restaurants. Meaning, that I didn't really pick up much of Jerk or Jamaican flavor as it was served. Maybe because there was a good bit of lettuce and I'm usually eating jerk chicken off the bone. You could have told me it was a chicken Caesar Wrap and I would have believed it. Again, it was good. Just not quite what I expected. The eatery was cool, well decorated and had a friendly vibe. A few regulars came and went while I was there and the crew had a good rapport with them. I would definitely go back to try the Rasta Pasta or something like that. If you're in the area, Parishes is well worth checking out. Four Stars

The wrap itself, however, fell a little flat for me--the flavors were milder than I expected, and I was hoping for more of that bold, spicy jerk kick. That said, the ingredients tasted fresh, and the portion size was generous. Looking at photos of the restaurant, the space has a stylish, artisan vibe that I'd love to experience in person. While this dish didn't wow me, I'm open to giving them another try in-house--sometimes ambiance and fresh-off-the-grill food make all the difference.

The 'everything sauce also added a nice flavor/kick, but I would ask for it on the side next time. (Overpowering) You can get it on a potato bun or coco bread and I definitely recommend the coco bread. The sandwich is HUGE and very filling. I could only finish half of it. Overall , I enjoyed it . It was clean, service was fast, and the staff were very nice. Definitely will be returning to try the other food.

Also, the establishment has free games that you can play while you wait. I came here for one reason: for the Cheyney Sandwich, a Fried Whiting Fish sandwich with 881 Aioli, Pickled Cabbage, Lettuce, and Cheese. I heard about this sandwich for months, and everyone said it was good, so I had to try it out. On the first bite, I was speechless. Now I see what all the talk was about. The Fish was cooked to perfection. The Cabbage on the sandwich was delicious, tangy, crunchy, and slightly sweet. You can either get the fish sandwich on Coco Bread or Potato Bread. I would recommend getting it on the Coco Bread. I also tried the Oxtail Cheesesteak, which consists of chopped Oxtail meat, sautéed Onions and Peppers, and Cheese Wiz. I also tasted the Oxtail Empanadas. I would give these items three stars because the Oxtail tasted too gelatinous. When I bit into the Oxtail Cheesesteak, it gave off a fatty and gelatinous taste, but was flavorful. Also, I did not like the Cheese Wiz in the Oxtail Cheesesteak. I would have rather had a Provolone Cheese or a Sharp Cheese on the Cheesesteak. The customer service is excellent, and next to the register is always a written note to inspire you and get your day going, which I love. If you're ever in the area, you should check them out.

I didn't know what to order for the entree and the waiter recommended the Seco De Tría and Lomo Saltado. One was a short rib and the other was a beef stir fry. Both were very delicious! I also loved the roasted corn they serve at the table. It is such a great touch. The dipping sauce had a nice little kick to it that added extra flavor without being overwhelming. The space itself is beautifully decorated, creating a really inviting atmosphere, and they even have a drive through, which is super convenient. On top of it all, the service was excellent. I would definitely come back, even if it is just for a quick bite again!
