This is my favorite sushi place in town. We are always greeted enthusiastically when we walk through the door. I have a favorite dish I usually get every other visit. The Crazy Umani is the best riceless roll in the menu for me. I have not been disappointed with anything I have tried. My child does not like anything adventurous, but she enjoys the popcorn chicken (without sauce) and is a fan of the edamame. My usual go to is the beef ramen. It's very good. The broth.....ouffff! I just hits the spot for me. Definitely something for a cold day. Sushi wise I have tried a few of their rolls. Always good. I wish the price would go down on them a bit. I have ordered sushi to-go and they are much smaller than the dine in. If that's the case lower the price? Only fair. I did have one bad experience. When the waitress set down the yakisoba I ordered I noticed a coarse beard hair. She saw it too and apologized. I received my new order within minutes. Made me kinda suspicious that maybe they just removed the hair and served me the same plate. Oh another thing this place fails to do. Ask if it's ok to remove your plate. I noticed each time if your food wasn't directly in front of you they'll come by and take it away. What if I'm just taking a small breather and need the food to settle? This place is AMAZING. Don't let the store front and/or location fool you. A coworker recommended this place and we ate there after a very long work day. We were so tired we could barely manage to leave the house for dinner but as soon as we got our first sushi roll we perked right up. We ordered a total of 4 rolls. One was a special. I forget the names but they all were delicious. One had thinly sliced lemon (with peel, sounds weird) on top and and it was amazing. The other had mango on top and it was delicious. We had a hard time picking which one was our favorite. The crunch roll was yummy too. They had "lemon soju" as a special. It is basically sake and lemons mixed and it came in a large pitcher (about 16$). It was so tasty and I have contemplated replicating the recipe. Overall, we will definitely be back and can't wait to eat here again. UPDATE: December 2018 This place quickly became our favorite sushi spot not only in Lompoc but in SB and any other sushi place we've ever eaten. We were going through a stint of eating here 4-6 times a month and STILL craving it when we didn't have it. Every time we go we always order: creamy himachi, Baja Mexico, Cabo San Lucas, and crunch rainbow. They had one chef who no longer works here and he made the most delicious special rolls. Unfortunately the new sushi masters don't make the rolls the old chef used to so that is a bummer but you truly can't go wrong with anything on the menu. It is all delicious. I have noticed the popularity in Umami spiking. We used to be one of the rare tables taken in the restaurant but now its almost packed each time we go. Go to this place and you will fall in love. Whenever I'm craving for some sushi, this is where I go! They're the best sushi place in town! Their specialty rolls are awesome. I've been to some sushi place where they put so much on the sushi that you can barely taste the fish. The mayo or eel sauce over powers the rolls. I tried their dragon rolls and regular cut salmon rolls. The dragon rolls were really good, but the salmon rolls caught my attention. They placed it on a wooden board and I've never seen that before. Also, the salmon tastes fresh and went well with soy sauce and wasabi. read more

For a little tiny restaurant they left a BIG impression. We went Friday night, sat at the sushi bar, and ordered three incredibly delicious rolls. The Albacore Lover roll was OMG good. With a bit of spice to it and crispy onions to top it off the fresh albacore - I was in heaven. Hubby got Spicy Tuna Crunch and the Rainbow roll and we both walked away so happy. Thank you for the excellent service, both from the server and the manager, and the fresh perfect rolls from the sushi chefs. We will be patrons again next time we are in Lompoc. read more

Considering I am here at least once a week, I would expect better treatment.....well, I usually love this place except for today. I usually order at least 2 rolls everytime but today, I decided to order a ramen and a roll for takeout. The girl I spoke with said that my order would be ready in 15 minutes. However, something came up and I was about 10 minutes late in picking up. When I got home, I realized that the noodles had all but absorbed the broth so I called the restaurant and I explained the noodle situation and I even made a joke that I don't like my noodles extra fat. I started to ask if I could come back and ask for broth. The girl i spoke with cut me off rudely and told me it was my fault because I came too late and that there wasn't anything they could do to remedy the situation. C'mon. You can't spare broth? I cook Ramen (the real deal, not the packaged ones) and I know making the broth isn't that much big of a deal. Water, seasoning, dried seaweed... Anyway, while I am nice and have the patience of Job, I wasn't too happy with today. I am bringing my sushi and everything Asian addiction somewhere else. Addendum: Can I say that this happened also at Sake but they were nice enough to give me some broth, and were super nice about it . *I had someone named Wesley C message me that I am slandering the business. Unless the dictionary definition of slander has changed, the said word means making a FALSE statement. I talked about my bad experience. I wasn't even complaining about the broth. Again, it was the experience. Isn't YELP a site where you can give unbiased reviews? You are right Wesley, I do love Umami but that experience soured me off. Five stars based on the relative quality of food in Lompoc (not many good options). This is one of my favorite spots so far. High quality and somewhat higher priced. But some what "hole in the wall". Decided to try this place out because it was new. Bad idea. Service was terrible! The waiter took forever to take our orders and never came back to check on us at all. For some reason, every employee was in the back room doing God knows what instead of helping out with orders in the front. A couple that came in the same time as us had to ask the sushi chef to get someone to help them and he seemed so surprised like he didn't realize what was happening. Food wasn't all that. Nothing awesome about the rolls and the prices were ridiculous! Especially for food that tasted like that. We also got the chicken teriyaki bowl to go and gosh, what a huge huge disappointment. Not enough seasoning, very bland and the chicken tasted old and had a sour taste. Same for their miso that came with meal. The miso had a really bad watered down, sour taste. It probably was reheated soup from days ago. Pretty disappointed with this experience and I know that I will not be returning. Get your pricing right and most definitely, get better servers. They always remember who you are and are happy to see you. My orders have always been prepared with the freshest ingredients and to my specific instructions . I tried this place while visiting Lompoc recently, and was very pleasantly surprised by how delicious it was. They have a really interesting menu, but it's well-thought out. They didn't just come up with crazy Americanized rolls with a bunch of ingredients thrown together and slathered with sauce. Whoever designed these combos really paid attention to how the different flavors worked together, and everything was delicious and balanced. I also tried a number of simple, traditional sushi and nigiri, and it was all fresh, sliced and presented beautifully. The rolls are enormous, by the way, so don't do what we did and order too many without realizing. :-) The decor and location are nothing special, but the place was bright and clean and the staff was friendly. read more

The atmosphere is so much better than the other sushi place. It's quieter, less crowded, and you don't feel pressured to order right away. Their menu is stacked!
