Let me start by saying the food was fantastic. We ordered three different cut rolls and some miso soups. Everything was made to perfection and we've never had any problems ordering for pickup. However, this was our first time eating in and it wasn't so fantastic... what incredibly slow service. I understand being understaffed due to COVID-19, but this was ridiculous. It took our waitress about 10 solid minutes before getting us our menus; and mind you it was just my wife and I, and then another couple on the opposite side of the room. Once we got our menus, it took her another 10 minutes to get back to us to ask us what we wanted to drink. We knew what we wanted food-wise, ordered away, asked for waters, along with ginger and Wasabi, and then patiently waited some more, and then some. By the time we got our soups, there may have been another 2 parties. We waited some more... 30 minutes later, we got the first roll, we waited another 7 minutes, and then our waitress asked if we wanted the bill. Uh, really? So we told her we were still waiting for the other two rolls, along with the wasabi and ginger. She smiled, said okay with a glazed look in her eye, almost as if she was really tired or possibly high, and walked back towards the kitchen. Another 10 minutes pass and she brings out our last two rolls... no wasabi or ginger... we asked for the condiments one last time and once again the same result. At this point, we were pretty much over it, asked the other server for our bill, signed it and left. Looking around the room, other guests were giving the same frustrated look while eagerly waiting for their meals to arrive as we departed. We hope that this waitress either steps it up a bit more or at the very least remembers to bring out the basics to customers / check in with them; in addition to figuring out a way to bring out the food faster and to the right table. read more

Most of the small-town California Sushi joints I've been to seem to be focused on rolls. I understand the whole Asian fusion thing. But this visit to this small place in Lompoc was a nice surprise. My friend and I went in the middle of the day no lunch rush. We sat at the sushi bar which was empty at the time. The chef was awesome his name is Mark. He's there everyday. So, if you're a regular he'll probably get to know you and treat you really well. The service was excellent. His skills were superb. The nicest surprise about this place is that the fish was so fresh. I eat sashimi. So there's no rice to muddle any flavors. It's pretty easy to tell when the fish is off a bit. Everything here from the simple Maguro to the Carpaccio was excellent. This visit was just a quick one time because I was in Lompoc doing business. But I'd be willing to drive 40 minutes to eat here. There are a few advantages of having an Air Force Base in the vicinity of whichever restaurant you're going to. And definitely one of them is that many of the patrons who come from the Air Force, likely have had some experience living abroad in other countries in Asia. What does that mean to us? Well, it means that there is a higher standard to authenticity sometimes found in the restaurants near the base. After trying the Korean bulgogi Stone Bowl, I can say confidently that this is the case here. The flavor of the bulgogi was true to the flavor that I used to experience around Osan Air Base in Korea. It literally was one of the most delicious bowls I've had since leaving Korea in 1992. Service was quick and friendly. Within a minute of arriving into a crowded dining room, we were seated promptly. The menu had a ton of options so it took us a few minutes to decide. Although a sushi place comma it was obviously owned by Koreans, so I thought I couldn't go wrong ordering something from that country instead of Japan. And it's been years since I've had an actual hot stone Bowl of bulgogi, so that's exactly what I want with. The meat was tender and sweet, just enough fat to make it juicy, and heavy on the garlic just like I like it. Unfortunately for my girlfriend, the next day the entire room smelled like a garlic meat factory. In fact I thought something was wrong with me so I took some antacids and Tums. I just moved to Lompoc about a month ago and this sushi restaurant is great! I had the chicken Udon and my bf had the Korean style ramen with beef and egg. We also got a couple of rolls. Service was amazing. There was an issue with the ticketing machine and my udon didn't get through to the kitchen but the waitress informed us right away. We had the baked salmon roll and a spicy tuna roll with shrimp tempura on the inside. Both were amazing but the spicy tuna was the better roll. We also got the beef bulgogi (comes with salad, miso, and rice) and the tempera ice cream (not pictured) all of which were delicious. Our family *loves* this place! The food is fantastic and the staff are great. We've had nothing but good experiences here and it's our favorite restaurant in town. All the sushi we've had has been top notch and it's even won over my girlfriend, who isn't overly fond of fish. Start with the monkey balls and plan to enjoy everything that shows up. I very strongly recommend the Cloud 9. It starts with spicy tuna rolls and adds just the right amount of amazing for it to be a culinary delight. It's a blend of flavors and it's going to be a regular purchase for us. The coconut shrimp are fantastic and I recommend those as well. What an amazing surprise in Lompoc! A friend recommended that we try Umami if we were ever in the area, and I'm so glad we did. The restaurant is located in an outdoor shopping mall area, and doesn't look like much from the outside. The inside is clean, the staff were very friendly, and it's set up like a normal sushi establishment. We arrived during lunch and ordered the teriyaki box special and two rolls. It was absolutely delicious and super fresh! My dish came with miso soup, salad, tempura (which was hot and tasty!), chicken teriyaki, and white rice. We were in town for a week working down at the Vandenberg AFB. My coworker and I decided that we were in the mood for some sushi. We checked the yelp local listings and this sushi spot popped up on our radar. We rolled in and fell in Love with the menu. Went to the front door of Umami sushi and waited several minutes to be greeted and seated. I finally had to motion the server/ hostess to get her attention and get a seat. There were 2 other customers in the restaurant. She finally seated me and then brought a menu a few minutes later. I noticed that she was just standing by the cash register. She didn't seem to be busy. I sat there for quite some time waiting to place my order. After about 10 minutes I figured that this might indicate the level of service and possibly the quality of the food so I decided to drive down the street to Sake Sushi. I'm here at Sake Sushi now. First and last time going here... they seated my wife and I right away by a very busy hostess/server at the sushi bar and things were going ok... we were given menus and took our drink order promptly... we tried to place our order with the sushi chef, but he wanted nothing to do to help and he summoned his server... he never talked to us, no eye contact, and when he finished the order he stepped back and crossed his arms and began chatting with the other chef... I order once of the house specials which was awful... very bland, and fish seemed aged and not fresh... tried to order again with the chef and he once again did some hand singles to his server and she came to help... the while time, the chef stood there yapping with the other chef (his customer service SUCKED)... the last item we ordered was horrible and tasted terrible and this time I knew the fish was old being a chef myself... told the chef about it and he could only shrug his shoulders... told him and his server it was inedible and gave it back... when the bill came they never took off the returned item, so we payed the bill leaving no tip... as we were walking out the two chefs mumbled something under there breath that was very negative... so, from chef to chef...this place is awful... we will never return... #umamiyasushisucks read more
