Went for dinner here for the first time earlier this week and was a bit disappointed. Was looking for a good ramen spot and was led to this place. It was a nice little location, food was decent, and service was good but portions weren't really worth the price & they only offered one type of ramen. One of my FAVORITE sushi places! We always go for the rolls. If you are looking for a new addiction, try their Lemon Tree Roll, it's DElish! Also they have a mean Rainbow Roll that's beyond tasty. We have been here previously for their Sushi, which is certainly quite good. I saw the reviews on Yelp for their bibimbap and decided to try it. It is excellent. All the makings are fresh, and the sauce to go on it is made there at the restaurant and is excellent, much better than the normal bottled sauce that you get most places with bibimbap. I guess if you live in lompoc this is an ok place for sushi. Their rolls seem fresh but the aren't rolled as tight as it should be. They fall apart easily but they are pretty big but costly. As for the bolgogi Inhave had better and made better at home with a store bought mix. My husband was in korea and he said it was nothing close to what they had there. We both agreed that the meat here was low quality but the vegetables were fresh. If you do wqnt to try it get the bowl rather than the plate you get the same amount or meqt and rice but $3 cheaper. As fir the fried rice I make better at home so don't even bother. read more

I've been coming here since I found out I loved sushi (took me a year or two to figure it out) and this place was the first sushi that I actually enjoyed. The flavors were good, the service impeccable (friendly and helpful, everyone here has a favorite roll and is happy to suggest one for people who need easing into it), and the place is clean (even for my exacting standards). However, being a semi-regular for over three years (and only recently having downloaded yelp) Umami suffers from something I only notice because I've been going so long- an overall dip in quality of the food. By no means are they using sub-par ingredients- the sashimi is still good, the rolls are still good. But sometimes there's an ingredient or two missing, or something you requested off the roll is still there, or any number of combinations s of problems that add up to a weird taste in your mouth. The staff are always apologetic and quick to fix the problem, but the ideal is, of course, to get the food right the first time. Ultimately, the staff saves this place from being a 2, but a more consistent food quality could bring it up to a 4... maybe 5. Definitely give it a try, ESPECIALLY if you don't think you like sushi (Japanese lasagna is a faux pax of culinary culture but it's a good way to start) but you'll find a new favorite pretty quickly. read more

Highly recommend! We have eaten here multiple times, and each time has been terrific. The fish is absolutely fresh, beautifully prepared, the chef's are skilled and engaging. They are attentive, and gave us good customer service every time we have been there. We also love the pace we had at dinner time, which was slower than what we've experienced at lunch when these guys can really crank it out, and by lunch I mean noon. The big screen TV usually had sports on, which for us is perfect at lunch. Each time we've had different tempura appetizers, all of which have been very tasty. We've tried different rolls cooked, and non cooked, each is appealing and delicious. We have taken the chef's suggestions for meals and are more than satisfied. With an appetizer, two large rolls, plus drinks, our bill comes out to around $30 and this includes a wonderful serving of shrimp fried rice that usually goes home as a killer midnight snack. Sitting at the counter is a great way to enjoy the skill of the chefs as the menu is extensive, the food is served on all white dishes so the food shows beautifully, and the chef's have them all down to an art form. This is a great little Japanese sushi house and the decor is inviting, spotless and a good value. read more

Nice atmosphere when you walk in with the sushi bar being towards the back. We chose a table and were quickly asked what we wanted to drink. After looking over the menu we decided to compare apples to apples and ordered a spicy tuna roll, several pieces of sushi and a speciality roll. The spicy tuna had a great taste to it with a bit of spice, nothing overpowering but still there. The roll we had was the "call 911". It had a great flavor but not to much heat. I would have preferred more heat for a roll named call 911, but it was still very flavorful with great fish. We always finish with the sushi and this was great. Nice rice, well cooked with good flavor and nicely packed. The fish had no odor and great flavor with very fresh fish. This was a great choice for dinner and the next time we find outselves over here this will be on the short list for food. read more

Came today for lunch to celebrate one of my coworkers ' birthday. We had a reservation for approximately 8 and we were greeted by the waitress and seated right away. The menu is extensive and they offer a good variety of food. I got an order of California rolls and the coco (coconut)tempura shrimp rolls. So we had chicken yakisoba and captain Josh along with cabo San Lucas and all we can say is wow... the chicken was outstanding and the flavor was great! The Cabo San Lucas was absolutely spectacular... it was the best sushi I have ever had and it's even better if you like Mexican because this is a Mexican sushi roll on steroids! If you are trying this pace for the first time I highly recommend getting the cabo!!!! The captain Josh was also great but the cabo was just so overwhelming that it stole some of the thunder. At this point we will not be going to an other sushi place until further notice. The service was great along with nice atmosphere and good prices, you just can't go wrong. On top of it all we arrived at 830, only 30 minutes before closing and we were treated as if they had no idea it was that late! This was my first time here and I have to admit I was skeptical about going to a sushi bar in Lompoc. Oh how wrong I was. Such a cute place. Service was good, not great but overall just fine. Most importantly the food was served quickly, it was fresh and fantastic. All the rolls were a work of art AND they tasted even better. Ordered the baked salmon roll, Aloha, and red dragon roll. they were amazing, especially red dragon! service was excellent! 4 stars because the decorations were less than what are in other sushi places (if that matters) and it was pretty pricey. I saw no signs or menus with specials on them like most sushi places, so 5 rolls came out to be 60 bucks not including gratuity. I will say this: Unami Ya is FAR better than the other 2 sushi places in Lompoc, Sushi Teri and Doug Hae. Every sushi eater in Lompoc will probably agree once they try it..just be prepared to reach a little deep in your pockets. read more
