The food was good, not among the best sushi I've had, but still good. The reason I give it 2 stars is because of our interaction with the management. My husband and I went tonight to get dinner with a friend from out of town. We were stoked to try Umami since it had been recommended by another friend yesterday. Like I said, the food was good, and the service was fine too. There are no prices on the menu for the sake so we asked the waitress. When the bill came the sake was more expensive than the waitress had said, like $25 more. We told her we would only pay the price she had quoted us and so she asked management to resolve the problem. The manager "hemmed and hawed" and tried really hard to get us to pay the regular price. When we said we absolutely wouldn't they finally said "ok", but with such a bad attitude I decided not to come back again. They gave us a new bill with a reduced price and when I thanked them they glared at me and told me the waitress was going to be fired because of our altercation! I felt so bad. The waitress was obviously new, young, and still in training. It had been her mistake but the management was so reluctant to take any responsibility for their employee. We had planned on leaving a tip big enough to cover the difference in the sake price, in case they charged it to her, and we did plus some. Whether or not they fired her or kept her on we have decided not to go back. Our "beef" was solely with Umami management and their extremely rude and completely inexcusable customer service. I will not support a business that is vindictive towards customers and unsupportive to employees. read more

Highly Recommended! New place so tried it out. I was told by a Sushi Chef friend (used to work in the area) that this place will put all the others in this town out of business, and I see he was correct! I came as a party of 3, and we ordered Chirashi ($18.95) and it included Miso, and we got 2 lunch specials ($12.95 each) that came with 2 choices (one choice was 4 pieces of Sushi and the other chioice was 4 pieces of Sashimi, rice and Miso was also included). The Chrishi was fabulous, there were 3 items I never had before, and they were great! At first I thought the Chirashi was a little expensive, but it was totally worth every penny. I also got the fresh Wasabi (exceptional). If I had to criticize anything it would only be that the rice in the bowl was a little skimpy, but I am sure had I asked for more the Sushi Chef would have accomodated me. Of course I also ordered a Sapporo Reserve to go with Lunch, the other drinks were Ice Tea and Sprite. The total bill came to just under $60, not bad for 3 persons and a fantastic meal. read more

The sushi is delicious! The service is terrible! Went there tonight and waited an hour to get our sushi. The waiter was very nervous and looked very stressed. Not sure if that was his first night or not. I would definitely suggest they get a better wait staff other than that the food is great! read more

This is one of my favorite places in town. I love how interactive the sushi chefs are from behind the bar even if you are seated across the room at a table! They are awesome. Their menu has more to offer than other places in the area as well. For instance - Garlic Edamame! Hello! Didn't even know this place was there, hiding between Marshall's and Staples off of H street. We've been there twice thusfar and have been more than pleased both times. The prices are the best in town in my opinion and the quality of the sushi is much better than the other sushi spots. The wait staff needs to be a bit more attentive, as the two serving us were pretty much AWOL most of the time. I asked for the check like 3 times... The udon noodles are great, and the variety and quality of rolls can't be beat in the area. The one thing that could use some improvement (besides the wait staff) is the decor - not really feeling the bare walls and loose wires hanging all over the place. I guess they just opened a few months ago, so maybe this will improve. Definitely worth checking this place out though! read more

Best sushi in Lompoc without question and the Korean dishes are a big plus also. The service has always been great whenever I've been in. Even though I'm from out of state, I'm in Lompoc very often and this is one of my absolute favorite places there. Quite a few of their items are unique in my experience but all have been extremely good. Must try items are the Japanese chicharones, the Umami Spring Wrap, and the grilled salmon collar. I had the Cabo San Lucas roll which has seared tuna, scallop, crab, and avocado, sprinkled with fresh salsa. I love sushi, but this was so good I had to try so hard to eat slower. I just wanted to scarf it down. And bonus for military friendly customer service. I didn't tell my waitress I was military, but when she saw I had a USAA credit card, she asked and applied the discount. A really tasty meal, best sushi I have had in a long time. read more

Great service clean place. I don't eat soup but it was a cold night and I got the tofu ramen it was bomb. Wife ate the Hawaiian cooler she loved it. Seared pepper tuna wrap was great. Beat sushi place in town! The sushi roll pieces were perfect sized and was super fresh! The caterpillar and shrimp killer rolls were delicious! We also tried the bulgogi, miso, and gyoza which was all also delicious. This joint also serves soju which was another plus! The servers and sushi chef were all very nice. The only complaint I would have is the service was a little slow considering there were only 2 other tables. But overall the food was amazing and the service was good! Figured we would try this place out- just opened not too long ago. The atmosphere was very nice, FANCY menu books.The pricing wasn't too bad, average for sushi places. The waitress/waiter/host, not sure who they were because we had a different one each time, was kind of loofy and didn't know what was going on. The place was very clean and organized, the tables were a bit close together tho so it would have been nice if there was a little more space. The menu has ginormous, so many choices which was a positive, but kind of overwhelming when it came time to actually ordering. We ordered gyozas for an appetizer, nice and crunchy- the sauce was a little different from what i expected, but it was good. I ordered the popcorn lobster roll tempura-ed and my husband ordered the roll (don't remember the name) but similar to a Philadelphia roll. Mine was alright besides it tasting "fishy" with them not using the freshest fish and also them sprinkling cinnamon on the lobster which actually didn't taste too bad . They didn't put any of the cream cheese in my husband's roll, which is the PHILADELPHIA roll, the main part is the CREAM CHEESE. he brought it to the waitresses attention, and she looked so dumbfounded and just said okay and walked away. when she finally walked back, he asked her if they could possibly prepare another one, but the correct way so he can actually taste what it is supposed to taste like. she asked all confused "so you would like us to add cream cheese?" ...after she finally put her head on straight, he was able to enjoy the newly made roll. I am sure we will give this place another try maybe a couple months out until they are a little more established and get some critics back. maybe at that time i can give them a higher star rating. read more

I've only ever had one thing to eat here: the tofu teriyaki hot stone bowl. The reason I'm content with this one menu item is because it's really, really awesome. I'm a vegan, so I have limited options, but this dish does it just fine. Also, Umami-ya is generally really quick with their food and the servers are nice. No complaints at all. read more

Lompoc needed Umami Ya Sushi. We only had 2 in this town and before you had to pick, would I rather go to Dong Hue for sushi, or would I rather go to Sushi Teri for dinner? Thanks to Umami now you can go to one place for both! The service there is incredible! For example, the owner who is also in the back cooking all the kitchen meals came to our table and asked us how our dinner was and made sure everything was to our liking. I'm a pretty die hard sushi fan, and their rolls are so fresh, it literally tastes like they caught the fish that morning. Umami is the only sushi restaurant I will go to in the 805! The sushi chefs remember you, and are happy to serve you! As a noted Yelper, I extremely recommend this place if you are serious about sushi. If not, you should still go here and get a lesson on what real sushi should taste like! Thanks Umami for understanding the importance of how a restaurant should be! read more
